Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Hehe, looking almost as nice as your ship I guess. Say cheese"

Willow took the picture, got the contact info and copied the messages. She'd expected more, but Willow wasn't going to argue with someone's choice of possibly last words.

"Right yeah, once you put the case back on your hand scanner, we're done here. Talk to the ground crew about having your hull degaussed, tell them you're one of Thorns, and like, that's everything I can do to help I guess"

"So like, try to come back ok? You're one of the few reasonable people that knows how to use a bar, you know?"

There are some people Willow never wanted to see in her book, and this chilled out Xeno hunter was one f them.

"Ok, so. Oh, where did the ninja go? In to the shadows I guess"
12 Aug 2023, 9:10pm
"Thank you. Yeah... If one has to use firearms, jetpack boots and neurotoxin injectors in a bar fight... They might've something bad happening in their self-esteem department", I chuckled jokingly.

"So... I guess, with all your salvage things, you're seeing a lot of dead people. Might be quite... An impact on your worldview", I added, putting the hand scanner's top cover on its place. "Like, we're seeing lots of casualties, but we also know what caused them. And yours, I presume, are more... A mystery to solve."
12 Aug 2023, 9:23pm
"Well, no, and like yes I guess"

For some reason, this pilot was so easy to talk to. Maybe it was because she had obviously done so much, or simply because she was tall and confident like Ash. What ever it was, Willow actually want to talk with someone for a change.

"So, I'm part of a slavager family, and like when you do that, you find the last owners, like, a lot you know? So yeah, mom was like, all about the credits right? Like I guess raising a swarm of kids isn't chap, so body retrieval and undertaking became part of the job for us"

"Ash and I were the only ones that could, um like, didn't mind doing all the things you have to do for someone that's passed. And when Ash, when she" Willow paused to breath for a moment "So I had to take over, and like, it feels good to bring someone back to their family, looking their best one last time you know? It's better than a PF message and like, rough location right?"

"Bastards"
12 Aug 2023, 9:58pm
"Yap...", eyeing the equipment top covers, making sure everything is in 'as it was' condition and nothing's going to irritate the heck out of me just by looking odd and unfit, I replied to Willow. "Any kind of work is hardly an inspiration if your stack o' bills to pay is heavy enough to make your back hurt. An... Ow."

I paused a little, noticing that Willow was talking of someone from her family, and apparently something bad happened to that person.

"Ow. Yeah... Now I understand", my voice became soft and quiet. "We have a detachment for that kind of work... Called 'Reapers'... Mostly of veterans, once wounded so heavily that they can't fight or fly anymore, but still willing to do... Good things. Many of them have nowhere else to go."
12 Aug 2023, 10:16pm
The distraction had come and gone by now, and I was on my way to check on the progress Willow and Meowers had made, but heard them engaged in somewhat of a deeper conversation before I was even around the corner.

As such, I decided to instead go back over to the airlock and wait there, sending a response to Venus while they got along.

I really didn’t expect any of your Imperial contacts to really care, to be honest. I’ve seen enough of how they work, so uptight about ‘decadence’, ‘the Emperor’ and generally coming across as a bit of a snob. They’d throw you under the bus for accidentally dripping sauce on a white blanket.

At least not all of them are like that, but too many are. And where you’re concerned, you’re willing to prove you’re different, and I’m willing to leave you that chance, but don’t expect more. The main reason I’m doing this is for Silvia. Without her, I’d probably be dead. Again.

Probably going to get around to working on my ship soon. Once those two are done talking, anyway. If the Thargoids allow it, I’ll look into the data. But I’ve been having some annoying headaches, and they always happen when those idiots are up to something.

Come to think of it, most of humanity would throw you under the bus if they made an extra penny for it. Isn’t this such a great world we live in?

Oh, and again, I’m not planning to involve the Thargoids now. What I am trying to do is get them to not target everyone indiscriminately if they get attracted to a firefight around a capital ship. Which they probably will.

Meowers
"Ow. Yeah... Now I understand", my voice became soft and quiet. "We have a detachment for that kind of work... Called 'Reapers'... Mostly of veterans, once wounded so heavily that they can't fight or fly anymore, but still willing to do... Good things. Many of them have nowhere else to go."

"Right? No one respects the janitor, but no one wants to see a mess either, you know? Some jobs, everyone like, knows it needs doing, but no one wants to think about doing it. It's good to hear there are people doing what you do, that care for the guns that can't fire anymore"

That was enough of that. Willow loved to talk shop, but for someone going to the edge, it felt like positive reinforcement was the way to go.

"So yeah, like great work you know? Your bird is like, almost showroom ready, and I think it's down to your tech skills right? Marshmallow will return the love and bring you back, ok? I better get ready to teach like, my next student the ways of the sensor you know?"
13 Aug 2023, 10:21am
"Yeah, quite a good way to put that. And..." I stared blankly just 'somewhere', "People fight better knowing they won't end up being bones in disabled ships or pieces of space junk endlessly orbiting some dingy planet nobody knows about."

"Thank you, Willow. See you... Later. One day or another," I nodded towards Kasumi who's been waiting for her, "No need to keep her waiting, we've got painfully much stuff to do."

I waved goodbye both to Willow and Kasumi and went to my cockpit, where I could relax and reflect on latest events, listening to low humming of Marshmallow's systems waking up. A long trip back to the AXDF camp was ahead. And, before finally requesting a take-off, I sent a message.

"To: Kasumi Goto

Heading back to my camp. Thank you for sharing all the things you told me, hope my company was somewhat helpful to you, or at least not annoying. Send me a message once you need me for the next stage of our plan."
13 Aug 2023, 10:41am
I decided not to say anything as Meowers nodded and waved toward me, simply walking out of the ship through the airlock at the back, after nodding back. I quickly moved off of its pad, and waited for Willow near the elevators, leaning against the wall with body and one foot, the other remaining on the ground, and arms crossed.
13 Aug 2023, 10:46am
"So, is it like, going to be a station train ride to your pad?" Asked Willow trying to guess what ship Kasumi would fly.

She'd said Corvette, but Willow had her down as a Krait 2 or Python type of girl.
13 Aug 2023, 10:52am
“Hangar 25. Go there whenever you like?”

I briefly overlooked the message from Meowers, deciding to leave answering it for later, then noticed the curious look Willow was giving me.

“Not my only combat ship, and I usually prefer medium. But I’m bringing out the heavy guns for this one.”
13 Aug 2023, 11:05am
"Kay, let's get going. Like, we won't get any configuring done here right?"

On the way to the hanger, Willow tried to make small talk, that turned into heavy talk. The mission was pretty much all there was to talk about.

"So I guess it's good you're bringing something heavy, because like, that FDL is an amazing ship, but like, it's loaded for Goids. Not going to be like, much help if the carrier deploys its fleet you know?"
13 Aug 2023, 11:37am
“Well, on that front, apparently the crazy Imperial found someone to get a few ships up as a distraction. Unless she already told you. Anyway, I’ll still be taking the big one because I want to be sure that if I need to shoot at anything, it’s not gonna last for very long.”

There didn’t seem to be too much activity in the open areas around the docks at the moment - likely, the workers were all caught up in, well, work.

“So, anyway, like I said. I have a few other ships that can fight. An FDL too, a Krait… two, technically, but I don’t really bother fighting the Thargoids now so I’ve been using it for other stuff. I suppose you could count my Phantom too, but it’s only got weapons so I can shoot back if someone pisses me off.”
13 Aug 2023, 11:55am
Talking about what her ships can take on, and using weapons to shoot at people that, Piss Her Off. Another person all about what they can destroy, not what they can protect.

"Yeah, it's like, nice to have some choices right? I got a D-Back. "Said Willow holding up a finger to show the ship count of one.

"That's the ship dad let me have when I went solo. And my, well ok, not my ship anymore" The finger count had got up to two, but back to one just a quick.

"I had to sell it to Oak, so I could like, rebuy my Python after it got totaled by raiders. My own stupid fault for leaving it landed next to an abandoned lab site I was restarting. I didn't even have a shield genny fitted at the time, and I'd forgotten the fuel scoop. Like, drr Willow, you know?"

"So yeah, my Python was a like, passenger ship so I could make some quick credits to get it fitted out the way I wanted. Then, once I got the readies, I turned it in to, like almost the perfect work-ship and home, you know? It's got space for all the work stations I need, and the size 7 mod-bay is like, a dream apartment now. I'm real proud of it"
13 Aug 2023, 12:21pm
I thought about questioning where a size 7 compartment on a Python came from, but decided against it when my mouth opened.

“I guess it’s a good ship for that. It’s kind of good at everything, really. Used to have one as a miner. Still have, but I got a bit bored of that so it’s currently gathering dust in a hangar somewhere. Also got a second one that’s more set up for rescuing people out of those war zones.”

I looked up at nothing for a moment, caught up in thoughts. Part of me felt almost embarrassed at having two of the same ship, instead of just changing their configurations depending on need.

“Thinking of that, my Cutter also used to be a miner, but when this war kicked off, I decided to toss some passenger cabins into it and use it to get people out of there, too. Preferred doing that over being part of the people that keep beating the Thargoids with a stick and making them hit back harder. But with those people stealers going around …”

I sighed. The war wasn’t a subject I really wanted to address, especially not now.

“If not used for that, I just move cargo around in it. Not that I do it a lot, bores me out of my mind. Anyway, I also have something that I use if I go and take off into the middle of nowhere for a little. If I feel like I’ve had enough of humans and Thargoids all around me, at least.”
13 Aug 2023, 12:47pm
"Yeah, the D-Back is good for that, but its living quarters suck. I've got used to having some space now, and like, I appreciate how good the D-Back is, like especially for sneaking up on space stations, for an unregistered data request, but I'm not into giving up my apartment unless I have to, you know?"

Arriving at the bay, Willow waited for Kasumi to grant access to the pad.

"Ok, let's see what we're working with here"
