Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I watch in a solem state as the Krait foys out in front of me, a ship 1/16th my size of my ship. "I assume he wants to die then?" I whispered softly, before switching all of my pips over to systems, and deploying a single hard point, my guimballed 4B cannon which shot a shell roughly the size of his ship. On top of that switching everything over to systems allows for a 3 seconds recharge on the ships shield.

Hearing the voice over my intercom made me snicker, but I listen to RJ's threats. "Listen RJ, I understand your friend is on this ship, but she is rather valuable, to me and my company. Look if you want to attempt to force yourself in, you're going to die, even if I never fire a shot you will die. Those station turrets behind you will rip you to shreds before you could say another word." I pause and think. "And even if you damaged me, i don't have a shielded FSD, consider it a M.A.D tactic. You damage me, I explode with enough force to basically create a new sun." I pause again before thinking just a bit more. "Look, RJ I'm sure you're plenty capable of damaging my ship, but actually breaching it? You're not gonna get through meta-alloy with lasers."

I pause again and sigh, I walk down the corridor to the area where Kay-Lee is being held. I open the door and sigh. "Alright, I need you to explain to your fiend why shooting me is a bad idea. Okay? Cooperate and I won't put you in stasis."
20 Jan 2021, 5:44pm
I get up off the floor standing myself up looking at Damiyen with a soft frown. "Ok, i-i can do that." I walk to the bridge of the ship following Damiyen closely.

I start thinking about what im about to say looking at Damiyen. "Sooo what are youre plans with me anyways...since you seem to do this often." Damiyen doesnt respond and i look down disapointed. I figuered there will be no negotiation so i just did what i needed as we got to the bridge.

"RJ its ok, this one is on me. I did this and we hardly know each other... Pls dont kill an entire station just for a pirate...that would be sensless. Ill see you again someday. Ive escaped before i can probly do it again. so ill see you again... someday..." I turn away from the window and look at Damiyen holding my hands up. "So can i atleast request something. Since i obviously cant outrun you can i atleast take my ship...I cant leave it here and its not just a ship so since im probly gona die or be turned in...may i fly it with you to wherever were going...please?" I stare at Damiyen with my eyes wide doing a stupid begging look.
20 Jan 2021, 6:57pm
"fair enough." i begin to retract my hard points "but yall take her give me my property back AKA my pistol and my cook wear and tool from her ship!" as i lower my ship back to my bay and get out " i gotta yield im in a station i fire we die and we have our own mission to do." i whispered "also be glad he aint seen our face or we would be on the same boat."

i pull a bottle of old sol from my jacket and takes a drink.
"i will say this you are a sly bastard u stopped me from going to sol!" i yelled "ay droids get my shit from her ship leave the chocolate but if he unlocks the ship for me.
20 Jan 2021, 9:27pm
"Im so sorry RJ" I whisper to myself staring out of the glass. "Youre one of few good people out in the black. I will get back." I turn to Damiyen looking fiercly at him. "Happy now? So whats youre plans CoMaNdEr?" I say with a mocking voice trying to irritate him. "Would you like a cup of CoFfEe...CoMaNdEr...?" I say leaning foward slightly bieng a brat. "Seriously tho....Whats gona happen to me..?" I look out the window again. just staring.
20 Jan 2021, 11:11pm
A smile sets on my face as I sink into my piloting chair. "I can't believe simply a flaunt of power was enough to ward him off." I sigh softly reading over the ammo manifest, the cannon didn't have any ammo. Slowly I stand from my chair and turn to face Kay-Lee. "Understand Kay-Lee you're now under custody of the SkullJacks Security Contractors, an independent force who allies with no one power." I say that simply as I reach for the command console to contact the tower. "Tower, this is Sierra Juliet Zero One requesting permission to depart." There was a small delay before the tower replied back, "Sierra Juliet Zero One you're cleared doe departure." I sigh softly turning away from Kay-Lee to position myself correctly in the piloting seat of Abyss.

One by one across Abyss's staggering large command panel, lights started to glow green and indicators lit up. I reach foward to a replica of a pre-space flight control panel for a B-29 superfortress. One by one I flick on analog buttons, more indicators light up along with guages. Slowly Abyss's monster engines rumble to life, from the outside the engines come to life with a flash of vibrant blue light that lasts less than a trillionth of a second. "Just give me one moment Kay-Lee, I'll speak once we are clear of the station." I slowly push foward on several sets of replica throttle levers, Abyss shutters momentarily before rising up off of the platform. "Verity, complete the rest of the launch on auto launch settings." After speaking, I release my hands from the controls as they begin to move by themselves as Abyss's automatic launch protocols take over.

I stand and look at Kay-Lee. "What am I going to do to you? I'm going to get to understand you better. You valuable, and not simply as a bounty." I say, a bit roughly, but with some sympathy. "Understand I'm fully aware of the large bounty on your head, well rather body, but that aside, if the federation wants you so badly, then you have to be of some use." I answer. "But on top of that, I believe everyone deserves a second chance, take your buddy RJ for example, he's got quite the tag on his head as well." I stand next to Kay-Lee a few feet away, but next to her none the less. "Think of this as a way to clear your name i guess." I say softly, then turn to look at Kay-Lee
21 Jan 2021, 2:09am
I stand in silence. Clearing my name would be amaizing. That would hide me abit better even tho if they see me they will still try and capture me. I have to figuer out what they did. They did so much that i hardly feel real. I rub over the 3 scars on my stomach. What did they do...

I turn to Damiyen. "You...Clear my name... Haaahaha." i walk off away from Damiyen with my hand rubbing against the wall. Looking back i see Damiyen looking at me. "Ye let me know when youre done... AND I WANT MY HOUND! I can be anoying you know... best u just let me go before, someone gets injured by...accident" I walk around the corner sitting against the wall... "You know... Im probly gona try and kill you. So...dont be mad ey!" I gigling to myself. "Oh ima get you alright..." I close my eyes thinking of Myra thats left behind. I doze of slightly thinking i should get some sleeep.

its been realy crazy the past time...i should never have come to this place. This ships walls are cold.. Hard.. i can smell the slight hint of FSD working. I close my eyes trying to sleep only to be interupted by a slight rattle. I look around and see the cuffs still hanging on the chair. "A little to much for one day... Ugh ill never be able to sleep here." I get up walking around. Opening doors. "Nope..(Beep).Nope..(Beep).Junk..." i go back to the bridge and get in one of the crew seats. "This seat taken?" I look anoyed at Damiyen before turning my head away and closing my eyes. "Remember what i said...Ill get ya."

JB sat on his bunk aboard The Cuckoo, reading a counterfeited copy of "The Brothers Karamazov", halfway through a bottle of rum.

He was feeling a little sorry for himself and was resting the bruises he'd picked up during a recent prison stint.

JB had been on the station a little over a day and had been wanting to keep himself off the radar. He'd bribed the Deck Chief to keep him off the system for 24 hours but that had come and gone. He had his copilot, Panza, walking around their usual haunts around the station seeing if there was any business to drum up.

The last time JB was on the station he had been strong-armed into running a faction boss out of trouble. The problem was that he'd met a girl, Effie, and left without giving a real goodbye.

It wasn't a problem usually, he rarely hung around with a girl for long, but Effie seemed a bit more shooty than rest... she had pulled a gun on him before just for running late.

JB took another swig from the bottle and turned the page... hoping that he could keep himself hidden in the shadows for as long as possible.

“Left a bit. Right a bit. Right a bit. Down a bit. SLOW DOWN!” Shouted Jim, to Kate who was at the Helm.

Jim was peering sideways out through the left hand portion of the Rocinante’s canopy (which was the largest piece of the ship’s canopy that wasn’t either cracked or repaired by glueing the parts of a leftover canopy they’d salvaged from a Viper, over on top to seal the ship and enable their return to civilised space), trying to help her line up for entry into Inara’s mail slot.

Kate was concentrating hard, focusing on her control inputs.

The bridge door swooshed open. “Are we there yet?”

Effie was teasing her friend. “What’s taking so long?” She asked.

“Very funny” said Kate, not looking up.

“Easy, easy. Down a bit. We’re in!” Jim turned to Kate and pulled a salute, smiling at her. “Right, Pad 32. Dead ahead and below.” He guided her down to the pad, where she touched down like the Pro Kate is, right on target.

“”Took you long enough” laughed Effie.

The two women high 5’d.

“Right then” said Jim. “Who’s round is it?”

“Easy Tiger, I need a shower before disembarking.” Kate said, rising from her seat.

“Jim, could you secure the ship and check us in with the Chief please” asked Effie, “Show him what needs fixing and find out which bay the Cuckoo’s berthed in.” Effie put her arm around Kate’s shoulder as they turned to the door, “Help me pick something out?”

“Sure” Kate said as they walked down the corridor toward their cabins...

Atlas walked into the docking area with a quiet sigh as he chuckles to himself. The man had been enjoying watching the little bits and pieces of chaos amongst the station as he journeyed back from the bar to the Leviathan. The massive obsidian colored Corvette stayed in it's berth as the nearly going on 40 year old gentleman walked over to the nearby consoles near the warship's dock.

"Ah good, the guns are rearmed. Rosalin, how's the fighters?" He asks the blond woman that was keeping an eye on the repairs.

"Doing well, sir! They're almost fully repaired and rebuilt." He nods, patting her on the shoulder.

"Well done then. Keep an eye on things for me will you?" Atlas waits on her acknowledgement before he paused, looking up at the very bright yellow ship that looked more patchwork than anything else.

"Ok...that is either one very brave pilot or a multitude of them. Either way...props for daring." The man chuckles.

Kate and Effie were still in Effie’s Cabin, going through the multitude of options as to what wear for their triumphant return to Inara’s Bar, having been only moments away from complete destruction during their last trip.

“I’m thinking something outrageous” said Effie.

“Not the bright Yellow Jump Suits!” Declared Kate grinning.

“Certainly not!” Said Effie, feigning complete horror at the thought of being seen in the very outfit they were wearing when they last left the Bar. “I’m thinking retro punk rocker with a touch of Daisey Duke.” Laughed Effie.

“And I think you’re losing your marbles!” Kate gave her friend a shove and they both fell on the bed in fits of laughter.

Just then the intercom on the cabin door chimed and Jim’s face appeared on the screen. “What’s up?” Kate said through the hysterics.

“Oh, er, sorry girls. I didn’t mean to interrupt.” Jim found himself unconsciously looking up to the ceiling.

“Don’t be silly Jim”, Kate pressed the bedside panel and the door slid open. “Come in”. Kate and Effie sat up on the edge of of the bed, clothes were strewn everywhere. “Are you OK?” She asked.

“I thought you should know that there’s a guy outside, stood beneath a black Corvette  that’s having some work done, who seems to be unusually interested in the Rocinante” Jim continued, “The ship is registered as the Leviathan. Ever heard of it?”

Kate and Effie looked at each and both replied simultaneously, “No”

“Want me to make some enquiries?” Jim asked

“Yes, but be discrete. Check in with the Chief first, see what he knows about this guy” said Effie.

“On it”, Jim turned and headed back to the Bridge.

“So, what about Blue?” Asked Effie, holding a delightfully tiny dress in the air...

It was a rather bewildered Jim Hawdon that dropped into the co-pilot chair of Thunderbird 4, unable to completely wipe what he had just witnessed from his mind. “These two are really something,” he said out loud as he pulled up the Rocinante’s comms panel.

Jim opened a secure Chanel to the Deck Chief. A round face appeared at the screen with a nub of cigar protruding from the corner of his mouth. “Yes?”

“Chief, this is James Hawdon of the Rocinante. “Effie Trinket has asked me to request a service inspection from you, personally. Any idea when we may expect you?”

“I’ll be right there” replied the Chief.

A few minutes later Jim lowered the steps as he watched the Huge figure of the Deck Chief approaching. “Welcome aboard” he said as the two met. They headed up to the Bridge and as the doors opened, the Chief stopped dead in his tracks, “WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?! He shouted, pointing at the Canopy

“It’s a long story, but listen Chief, before we get to the matter of rebuilding the ship, what can you tell me about that guy outside. The one talking to your engineer next to that Vette?”

“Nothing. Seems like a pretty typical Corvette owner to me. He’s probably as confused by your Canopy as I am! Sorry I can’t be of anymore help.” He paused and rolled the chewed up cigar to the other side of his mouth. “What I can tell you though, is that fella with the Robot side kick, the one that Effie asked me to keep a look out for, well his ship’s over in the next hangar bay. It’s been here for a few days and he hasn’t set foot outside.”

“Thanks Chief. Do you want me to tell Effie that your here, she and Kate are just getting ready to hit the Town”.

“No no. Don’t go interrupting her, you just tell her to come see me when she’s ready”, turning to the door he said, ‘I’ll send my Team up to you to get started on the refit, as soon as they’re finished with that Vette over there.”

“Cheers Chief” said Jim, following him through the doorway.

Jim closed the entrance steps and headed back to the Cabins to update his shipmates.

Atlas shook his head after a moment of silent contemplation, studying the mostly destroyed vessel with a sense of both trepidation and silent awed respect. Taking a seat in a nearby chair, the man took his time trying to decide what to do after that. He did notice the dockhand suddenly showing a little bit more attention, however subtle it was. A former lifetime of piracy got you fairly good at reading some rooms.

"I do wonder what that was about..." He mused aloud to himself before his condition kicked in, setting off a coughing fit as he clutched his throat, eyes screwed up in pain that passed after a moment and a swig of his flask, full of water. "Though what to do now. I should head back to the Auriga soon and set up a jump to try and find that distress call that came over the airways recently..." Atlas whispered to himself, checking the tablet that had the request from the Pilot's Federation proudly displayed across it's digital frame.

"Or I could go be at least a little neighborly. If there is something Commander Buur shoved in my face, it's that you don't need to just watch people like a bird of prey. Not a pirate anymore." He chuckles, thinking back on the time spent in the Buur Pit and with the Protectorate. "Right, I'm going to at least say hi."

And with that, he got up with a wave to the deck crew working on the Leviathan and headed over to the bay that held the Rocinante. If nothing else, he could get a good story out of this, because the pages written all along the armor plating and the canopy of the bright yellow vessel spoke wonders.
29 Jan 2021, 4:02pm
After what seemed like 2 years, 4 months, 27 days and 6 minutes, since Jim left their Cabin to meet the Deck Chief, the door to Effie’s Cabin opened and the two women emerged, ready to do serious battle with a drinks menu.

As they entered the Bridge, where Jim was quietly watching the goings on outside the ship, Kate said, “Effie, I’ve been meaning to tell you something. Last night, before plotting our course back to Inara, I placed a call with the Chief to ask if he’d seen any sign of JB.” She paused.

Effie turned to look her straight in the eye. “He’s dead isn’t he!” She said.

“Dead?” Replied Kate, “He’s not dead Eff, he’s holed up in the Cuckoo in the bay next door!”
29 Jan 2021, 4:07pm
Effie smiled and headed right out the door. As she reached the bottom of the access ramp she almost knocked over the bloke who was stood there. “I’m so sorry she said to him. Must dash!” And with that, she headed straight toward the bay where The Cuckoo was moored...
