Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

A reply dropped into the incoming almost instantly.

Ok. In the bar. Not happy right now.

I raised my eyebrow and rubbed my chin. Something must've happened, and, given all those news about the Thargoids, and the fact that Kasumi herself was doing something on infested territories, I thought it might have something to do with that new abducting ship type... Though, I guessed I'm going to get to know that from her anyway.

Picking up my pistol and personal shield generator, these items were crucial in that wacky bar last months, I decided to keep that plain pastel-violet hoodie on, instead of the uniform jacket. Going to see a friend after all, no need for formalities.

Turning off all ship systems but computer and comms, which were busy uploading the data, I went to the bar.

Comms from flight control issuing directions to ships currently in the entrance and exit queues to hold position was met with both routine, 'copy that,' acknowledgements as well as more frustrated, unprofessional acknowledgements.

Once all ships reported compliance, flight control issued the order, "ILT-21, Onoarea, you are cleared for priority landing, bay zero-three. Reduce speed to 100 meters per second. Release code alpha-seven-niner for automated docking. Over"

"Copy that, Bay 03," replied Vasil. "Negative on autodock, Control. Manual landing. Over"

"Understood, Onaoarea. Welcome back." said flight control. "Five minute landing timer engaged. Security has been notified and is waiting at the landing bay. Over and out."

Vasil eased the clipper into the station. The ship, immaculate to the point of being unnaturally so, and liveried in the standard Pristine Imperial White, settled on the landing pad soft as feather. Once the electromagnetic clamps engaged and the engines wound down, flight control finally started releasing other vessels for arrival and departure.

Vasil was in the cockpit of the Onoarea, reviewing the COVAS’s pre-flight check logs and adjusting the ship’s power allocation for defense and speed when Jefferson announced, “Incoming message. Secure channel two.”

Vasil paused a moment, the message cursor blinking steady. He knew it had to be Jenna’s reply. He’d not sent any other secure communications, and incoming messages from the ERS defaulted to channel three.

“Show message on screen one.”

The message appeared on the secure screen, visible only from the pilot’s chair. Jenna was brief, but informative, and Vasil saw no need to reply. He'd offered his thoughts on the situation and those involved. He offered a suggestion to resolve things in a typical Imperial way, through the liberal application of money and power. Anything else he had to say would not help move things forward for her. In the end, Vasil saw no potential for profit in the situation be that financial or otherwise. He did, however, truly hope she found what she needed.

“Jefferson, close message. Delete with level 4 burnwipe, full prejudice."

"Acknowledged," said Jefferson, then after a few seconds, "Burnwipe complete. All traces of message fully removed from all memory and storage."

Based on who the message was from, Vasil thought it unwise to have such an exchange in the logs. Imperial Customs and Immigration had a tendency to randomly review logs due to the amount of people the ERS was bringing to Emerald and they’d most likely get the IISS involved if they found proof of contact with the woman.

In the boarding lobby, the local ERS rep was apologizing to the passengers for the delay, assuring them that the individual who caused it was in custody and judiciously failing to mention the person is wanted on suspicion of murder. But now, in a few short hours they would be in Imperial space and safely on Emerald.

Stopping at the pilots market to get some food, Willow gave her self a lunch break before finishing up at Marshmallow's dry dock. She was thinking she'd be working on about 20 ships full of troops that new about boarding, not 3, or 9 ships at best with a multi-skilled pilot. Whatever, now she had a bit more time on her hands, so there was no need to rush.

Taking her food to the boarding area to wait for the pilot, Willow sent a message to let Kasumi know she was waiting, and there was no hurry. She enjoyed the lack of gravity, it helped her relax.

Walking around hangar 02 I look over Slipstream and ensure everything is in working order. She was a magnificent ship though very vulnerable in combat due to her lack of weapons. The ship only needed to serve one purpose get me to the carrier. I went over the flight path in my head over and over. deciding that the best approach would be from beneath, if there even was such a thing in space.

Turn off FA boost pop a heatsink and get to the ship. Drop a recon limpet and set automatic flight pathing. Head to the air-lock and EVA over to the Carrier. A lone operative on the exterior of a carrier would be difficult to spot so I would have a chance. I just need to get inside and clear a path for Kira and Meowers. I board the Graphite colored Cutter and proceed to the cockpit calling over to Celeste as I walk through the corridors.

'Celeste I need an autopilot routine setup if you would please.'

"Certainly commander."

An autopilot routine script opens up in front of me and I proceed to input all pertinent details. Flight path, engine engagement, power distributor setup, and insert a random jump script within the ships jump range. The hope was that the ship jumping out of system would at least draw some more of those goons away from the carrier, Further alleviating the burden placed on the Wing. I don't know how many people will brought along Aventus only mentioned 6 FDL but knowing him there would likely be ground troops available in his medical ship the Lifeboat.

'Oh shit that just might work!'

I pull up my messages and locate a Kasumi Goto matching the description of Kira and type up a quick message.

Hey I have an idea just crazy enough it might work. I managed to get us 6 FDL and a medical anaconda. If we can get that stupid access code from that folder we just might be able to get boots inside the carrier early.

I also wanted to say thank you for this. I can be difficult to work with so please know I am trying.

Kasumi Goto
Do you need me there or something? Can be there whenever you like. Currently just finishing up some tea in the bar.
I’ll let her know too.

And my ship just arrived too. Guess we can do that afterward, then. Probably going to take longer to walk through it than to modify the sensors.

She was falling asleep waiting, so composed a quick replay and got back to inspecting her eyelids for holes.

So, I need the ship safely unlocked, coz like so many owners put death traps on them, and I can't be bothered to disarm booby traps. And like, I still need a pair of hands you know?
12 Aug 2023, 6:43pm
The presence of people got Willow out of her drowsy mood. Both Kasumi and Meowers were looking at Willow napping upright, using her magboots.

"Oh like hi girls, er, ladies, or no girls. Like, what age does a girl become a lady right? Whatever, so let's get this done yeah? Who's going to be my hands?"
12 Aug 2023, 6:53pm
Willow Thorn"Oh like hi girls, er, ladies, or no girls. Like, what age does a girl become a lady right? Whatever, so let's get this done yeah? Who's going to be my hands?"
"It's not the age, but experience!" I smirked jokingly, raising my hand with a finger pointed into the air, as I felt being the oldest person in that company.

"Anyway, let's get inside," I punched in the airlock codes and the door opened. "You're welcome."

And, looking at Willow, I added, "I guess me, and Kasumi might help with something if three hands aren't enough. Despite all my tinkerings, it's still an FDL, with its modules on their proper places. Standardising helps with field maintenance."
12 Aug 2023, 7:09pm
“So I’ll just… be here. Tell me what needs to bedone and I’ll do it. As long as it doesn’t zap my fingers and I know what I’m looking at.”

With that said, I stepped into the airlock and waited there, to be pointed at the right thing.
12 Aug 2023, 7:12pm
Celeste alerts me to an incoming message while I am plucking away at the autopilot routine I planned on using. I needed this to be perfect so each line was combed through religiously with Celeste providing input as to where the code would cause issues and unintended results. Like for instance one of my lines would have put me between the Cutter and the carrier at about 150m/s. Not exactly ideal results if you ask me. I open the message and read it over.

Six of those things? I guess your Imperial contacts are actually still worth something. Color me surprised.

Sounds better than having to rely on Thargoids - not exactly like I trust those bastards, but I am still going to try if I can somehow get them to not attack us, our support or the carrier, if they do show up. I have a feeling they will, but how I’m going to do that… I’ve got no idea. But they can differ between targets, whether you believe that or not.

I’m also going to inspect that folder as soon as I get a chance. Whenever that is. I hope to do it today.

The response seemed friendlier than I would have anticipated. Maybe the act of actually providing information to her was useful or was it perhaps the thank you I gave. I shook the thoughts out of my head needing to focus on the script, after composing a quick reply.

Ya uh still not a fan of the Thargoid idea. I'll overlook it if it happens for the sake of maintaining your friendship with Silvia. To your other point, I am just as surprised as you are. This contact owes me nothing yet they are willing to overlook mistakes I've made, might also help that they were one of the few who rejected Diaz's plans along side me.

Right well I have a script I need to complete on this Cutter. Let me know what you find and we will discuss the final details prior to departure. Again thank you.

I closed the message and continue working on the routine. I just get back into my rhythm when Aventus scares the hell out of me.

'Hey there Venus. Watcha working on?'

His strangely deep voice cuts through the silence raising hairs on the back of my neck. I damn near jump out of my seat and turn around to see a 6'0 200lb man with dark skin standing in the doorway to the cockpit.

'Aventus! Jesus man make some damn noise once in a while. Let your wing know to talk to the ground crew. Tell them to say they are with Thorn. The team will degauss their ships. You however have a significantly more challenging role. I need you to fake being a medical ship for Azimuth.'

'You need me to do fucking what now? Those crazy bastards? Why me? What the hell?'

'I'll explain it all when your ship is being treated. Though you won't like what we have to do to her.'

"Oh wow, an FDL. So, armed like a gun battery, but handles like a light fighter. Great ship, you know? I got my self a Mamba once. Very much like the FDL, but totally for showing off right? I felt like a superstar flying that baby.

While the software loaded, Willow gave them the same explanation she'd given Jenna.

"Ok, so you know how when you fly up to a big ship or settlement, you can see all the people on your scanner right? But like, the ship can't tell you who they are till you focus on them? Well, what's happening is your computer is talking to its stored info, local database, and then PF galactic info. That's why it takes so long for your ship to say like, Oh, that's Jeff Jeffry, the um, cleaning guy or what ever"

What I'm doing is letting your computer know what Silvia looks like to its scanners, so it can ask its self, Is that Silvia? Before it doses the normal identity retrieval. I've by passed the need to focus the target too. If it sees a Silvia signal, it'll tell you, ok?"

"The personnel scanner that comes with, like every suit is even better at it, coz like, that's what it do, you know?" said Willow trying to sound cool "But the range is real short coz it don't have like, a ships genny behind it giving it mondo power right? But, I've let it know what you're looking for, so its range for detecting Silvia is going to be like, way better than it would be for just some random asshole, ok?"

"So with the hand scanner, you're looking at like 20 - 30 meters and LOS, but for Silvia, it's like, 80 - 100 meters, and like a normal ship wall or two won't cause too much interference"

Next was the engineering part. It was a real easy job, if you had two hands, and it wasn't hard to explain to Meowers what needed doing.  While observing to make suer nothing went wrong, Willow asked the awkward question.

"So, it's like, not that I don't think you'll pull it off, but like, you're a fighter pilot right? So you'll know what I mean. Um, can I get a picture of you and like, er, is there anyone you want a message delivering to if like, er, like. You know?"

"Yeah, thank you. Totally love that ship. More than just a 'ship' for me, you know," I felt flattered a bit. "She carries an AX loadout right now. I don't think I have enough time to get back to AXDF carrier..." I started counting with my fingers, "Install my 'conventional anti-ship warfare' package, and then explain to my superiors what the actual heck I'm up to and why do I need that setup."

"Anyway, with AX stuff, she can disappear from the sensors and stay like that for a long time. Low emissions profile and all that jazz."

And, listening to Willow explaining how her scanner trick, I nodded, memorising the details.

The awkward question was equally awkwardly asked, making me raise my eyebrow, but I thought I got what all that meant. "So. You want a picture of me in case I end up dead. Right?"

"Yeah, coz its like, so many people like, go without leaving a monument, and like no one cares, but I do. I keep a record so like, if anyone ever comes looking, I can say Hey, Yeah, I know them. This is what I found out about their life, and this is what they looked like. And It really helps loved ones to know what happened, and it helps them to know someone cared enough to find out who that person was, you know?"

Thinking about her book, Willow looked in to space.

"Sometime I just look through the pages of the people no one came looking for, and read their names out loud and look at their faces you know? Everyone should be remembered by someone right?

People didn't tend to understand about Willows book, and she'd said too much about it already.

"Er, so right, yeah. I left an uninstallation program called Thorn-B-Gone, and like, any auto fix unit will see the mods you made as a fault and fix it. Same as a ground crew when they run a diagnostic. So like, getting your sweet kite back how you had it is real easy. Ok, so just a quick adjustment to your hand scanner and we're done. Um, unless you want to record a message to be delivered. Like, I'll see to it, it's received, you know?"

*vaguely pays attention to the technical explanation of the scanner upgrade while reading Venus’ response, and decides not to reply after reading its end, then gets distracted and wanders away from Willow and Meowers, outside of hearing distance*

A thought about dying, either on the battlefield, or during that operation, wasn't making me scared or uncertain. In the position where I've been in comfort, where my actions had a meaning, possibly even making a difference for someone, I've done already more than enough to consider my contributions valuable. I was doing what I supposed to do. And, if I have to go, doing so, then let be it.

Also it shouldn't be a stupid case of near-death experience due to allergic reaction like I've had several years ago because some lazy cafe employees forgot to mention some of the ingredients of my meal. That day, I felt angry and ashamed.

"Sure," I replied to Willow. "Two recipients. Here's the contact data. George Douglas is my superior officer on AXDF Atlas, and Nagata Mion is the commander of militia forces I'm cooperating with," I took the datapad and opened their comm profiles for Willow to read. And, two text messages to attach. First one, for George, should be like 'Tried to investigate and uncover Azimuth's connection with slavers', and the second one... Let it be just 'I've been stupid. Feel free to punch my face in the afterlife'."

And, ready to have my photo taken, I made a wacky grin.
