Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Are you ok? What happened? Let's get you somewhere safe.

Those were the sorts of things a hero was supposed to say after a valiant rescue, not you look like you need fattening up. And Valkyrie? Well, she did escort the dead quite a lot, but she'd never even seen a horse, winged or otherwise. She did quite fancy owning a raven, but that wasn't practical living on ships most her life.

"And your real sassy for a knight is shining armor you know?" said Willow with indignity wrapping every word. Softening up, he had just saved her from two crazy axemen, Willow offered him some options

"Er, like, should I let you um, escape or something before security get here? I mean like, I guess I owe you or, you know? So yeah.. Oh, and thanks you know? Really"

Willow Thorn "Er, like, should I let you um, escape or something before security get here? I mean like, I guess I owe you or, you know? So yeah.. Oh, and thanks you know? Really"

“No sense leaving. The docs will call security anyway when they stitch me up.” Jim plucked at the congealed, rubbery mess of blood, coagulant, and surgical glue. “Besides, this tire patch won’t last but so long, and I think a bone might be cracked. Best to just wait for them here.”

Feeling light-headed, Jim looked around for a place to sit, settling on a cargo container. The ring of Valkyrie voices in his ears slowly faded back into always present but easily ignored tinitus.

“Name’s Jim, by the way. And no need for thanks. You must have really pissed these guys off. Deal gone bad, or were they just looking for a bit of fun and you were having none of it?”
06 Oct 2023, 10:47am
"Yeah, so I guess I piss people off just by like, existing or something, right?" Hitting the alarm, Willow took Jim by the thumb, because his armored hand was way to big for her to hold.

"So you should come with me and stop picking at it. God!" she said sternly, rebuking him for playing with the medical sealant. He really was just like her big brother.

"So my med lab looks like a morgue, coz like, that's what it is, but I don't think you that far gone, so don't worry ok? I'm just going to prep you for the paramedics so they can like, get right to treating you" Willow explained leading him deeper into her ship.

"Like, I'm ok at treating people while they are still alive, as long as you don't squirm around much, you know? My clients tend to be real still. Oh, and I'm Willow by the way. Hi"
06 Oct 2023, 5:21pm
Morgue. Prep. Still.

The words did not quite register with Jim until he and Willow were in the ship and he found himself sitting on what looked like an embalming table. Now that he had a chance to look around, he started noticing all of the mortuary tools. They were each innocent-looking by themselves, but to someone unaccustomed to preparing the dead, they became borderline macabre when considering their intended uses.

Jim had never given it much thought before, but his main line of work was keeping morticians in business. He watched Willow as she prepared the gear she would need to patch him up. She was about the same size as Hashimoto, and Hashimoto was a bona fide murder machine at the very end, which is why the Valkyries chose Hashimoto. She had obviously taken care of Vihan or she would not be standing there, so she could hold her own in a fight. Valkyries could hold their own in a fight. She gathered and prepared the dead. Valkyries gathered the dead.

“Willow. Hmph. I would have expected something like Eir or Svipul for a Valkyrie. But not Helga, not for you. You do look more like a Willow than a Helga, so I suppose it's suitable.”

The solvent did a good job of loosening the medical congealment and some careful, but swift work with a scalpel freed it of Jim's armor.

"My folks had a thing for trees, you know? Release your armor so I can take it off please"

Once unlocked, Willow removed Jim's chest protection. Another spray of solvent should loosen the congealment's grip on under suit.

"Um, Svipul sounds like, nice, but I always liked Eleanor. I grew out of it, Willow is just fine don't you think?"

Security made contact over the ships communications. "Gateway security, what's the emergency?" asked an officer.

"Oh, like two guys tried to kill me, but we killed them. Got a guy with a deep laceration caused by an axe across the right pectoral following through to the right bicep, with a fair chance of having at least chipped the humerus. Send a clean-up crew and paramedics. Like, thank you" said Willow inspecting Jim's wound.

Turning his arm to get a good look at the damage under Jim's shoulder, a thick dark river of blood pushed its way past the sealant causing Willows jaw to drop. She pushed his arm hard against his chest and shoved a full roll of bandages into Jim's mouth.

"Er, real quick with the med team, the brachial artery is nicked. Real quick"

Willow pushed her fingers up into Jim's shoulder and pinched the artery above the cut. Preparing for a rough ride, Willow got a good grip on Jim's arm so she had the best chance of keeping hold of the artery until the meds got here.

"Real sorry Jim, this has gotta sting like a bitch"

Dead people were so much easier to deal with. They didn't have fluids getting pumped all around the place, and pain wasn't a factor either.

Removing the armor went better than he thought. No pain with the way Willow managed to separate it from the wound. But the pain of her fingers digging in to him was worse than any combat medic tearing armor from a sealed wound could ever be. Probably a good thing it was her and not some ham-fisted grunt with sausages fingers rooting around in his shoulder.

"Gaaah!" Jim’s eyes widened and he gnashed his teeth on the bandages. They managed to censor his more colorful exclamations. His free hand clamped onto Willow’s cast, clenching. Practically every muscle in his body tightened in an effort to endure the sudden pain. Damn! He just wanted to punch her in the face to get her fingers out of the bleeding wound.

Jim guessed the damaged artery is why he felt light-headed and why distant Valkyrie songs had lingered after the fight, waiting just in case they needed to come back. Enigmatic beings were Valkyries, equally benevolent and vindictive; sometimes helping, sometimes harming, sometimes both at once depending on what they thought best served their purpose.

Willow, through pain, preserved life. This was a reminder from a Valkyrie that his life was hers if she chose to collect it. All it would take is a snap of the fingers.

Fortunately, Jim showed considerable restraint while Willow pinched the punctured artery until the paramedics took over. Their pain killers and expertise soon made Jim comfortable as possible with a lager party of his chest open to the elements, and sealed the hole that allowed his life to ebb away.

Some unwanted questions were bound to be asked, but Willow had made it a habit to leave her external camaras active when on Citi Gateway. Thanks to The Network’s warning about the darker influences operating on the station, she took many such precautions. That should clear up any confusions the more negotiable members of Citi security may have.

“Could you guys give Jimmy my contact once he’s patched up” Willow asked one of the medics passing on her details “Like, I owe him a good meal or something, right? I better go get washed up”

After shallow questioning in the security office, thanks to her supplied footage, Willow was released. The attack may have been Citi silliness, but it could be connected to Bad Investments Inc, so Willow sent a message to Vasil.

Hey Vee, it's Will.
Ok so these guys boarded my ship while I was sorting the food stuffs I imported, and had a go at me with like, axes. I’m ok thanks to a passerby. But like, is nothing I guess, but it could be something. Like, something to do with Bad Investments, you know? So yeah, watch your six, okay?
Later Vee

That was one hell of a welcome back after her first proper trip off station for a while. Now she really fancied a Vega Juice, and a couple of packes of BBQ Un-meat-abel.

I'd already arrived at the station when I received the message from Meowers.

Alright, sure. Already there, so let me know when you're here. I'll... look at how I'll pass my time until then.

- K

A few hours... and a nap currently seemed quite appealing. So I went to the personal cabin of my ship and locked it off, peeled out of the suit and lay down on the bed in full clothing. Didn't take long for my eyes to snap shut when the muscles in my body relaxed, and for my mind to drift into the, not always pleasant, dreamscape.

/Spongebob'ish transition screen: Several hours later (continued from Off Station)/

First thing that you should consider when arriving at this station and at this particular bar these days: check your bar supplies. Namely, personal shields and pistol. Some of you might ask, like, only a pistol? Yes. Since my self-esteem allows me to go to a bar without having a jetpack boots, neurotoxin injectors, grenades, cloaking devices and a friggin' tank cannon in the magic pocket to have fun.

"Hi there.

I'm here. I mean, at Citi. In the docks. So, the bar? Or some other place? Any option is okay for me."

Of course my eyes immediately spotted a relatively fresh explosion scorch mark on the floor once I left the ship.
18 Oct 2023, 10:18pm
The buzzing of the mini-computer on my wrist as it vibrated caused me to be startled awake, at least, in mild manner. I was somewhat annoyed at first... then realized, my 'short nap' had actually turned into a few hours. And those hours hadn't done much to alleviate how sleepy I felt. If anything, I was more tired.

I gave it a few minutes to rub the sleepiness out of my eyes before I looked at the message that I received, unsurprisingly, from Meowers.

Oh. Uh, yeah, bar. Unless you got any other ideas. I guess we could maybe grab some food from that Italian place I showed you... how long ago was that now? I forgot. Damn screwed up brain. Then go there.

I could say that I'm already there, but a planned 'nap' turned into more like a few hours of sleep. And I'm even more damn sleepy.

I stood up slowly, and... thought about putting on one of those hoodies without a hood, whatever the correct term is, then decided against that and threw on the close-fitting, black jacket that I had worn prior to the rescue of Silvia on the Queen Anne's revenge. Then the important stuff.

Personal shield, pistol - definitely not authorized 'standard' plasma pistol from before anything serious, outside of military forces, somehow became frowned upon - and, what else, a hood that was practically signature for me now, while providing some much needed anonymity from cameras. Because Azimuth were still the biggest idiots and asshats in the galaxy. Within the human circle thereof, at least.

Then I left the ship, just going to the bar since it was at least a good meeting point.

“How about you go get what you need, and stay over,” Willow had told him. “Hey, pack some of your choice boom sticks that need some loving too. I like to tinker with stuff…”

When Jim appeared in the docking bay, it was apparent that what he “needed” was four large duffel bags, one over each shoulder and one in each hand. Each duffel was packed tight with weapons, gear, and ammo. What little empty space remaining in the bags had been stuffed with a few changes of clothes as an afterthought, acting more as cushioning to keep the gear from knocking around.

So, there he was with duffels near bursting like overcooked sausages and standing at the Bramble’s gangway. “Hey, boss! You there? I brought the party supplies!“

Continued from this spot

I’d planned to strike up some kind of conversation on the way to the docks, but had completely, totally forgotten what it was about, which really annoyed my brain. So the walk there was filled with awkward silence, until we were stood at the back of the Phantom that I used to go around places nowadays.

“There we are.”

I used my wrist computer to give Meowers access to the ship. Then, I turned off my mag boots, and… pushed off the ground to float upward to the rear entry hatch, grabbing the small ladder that seemed almost specifically there for that purpose. Because I really couldn’t be bothered to walk the full length of the pad to get into the ship.

“Go in through the front if you want, it’s closer to the cockpit. I’ve got to stop my body from complaining about using the damn bathroom.”, I called back to her, then disappeared inside.

It’d give Meowers time to… either manage to get lost in the ship or find wherever the vents in the cockpit were. And I could tell EDI to remain quiet while there wasn’t just me around.
20 Oct 2023, 9:55am
"Ah, a Phantom," I noted, "We have some of these too."

Luckily, the internal configuration was somewhat known to me and I also knew what a Phantom cockpit looks like inside: they've been popular AX ships for years, so it didn't take much of my time to locate the front airlock. Once inside, I activated one of the cockpit vents and sat on the floor nearby, getting my cigarettes out of the pocket.

That waiting provided me with a moment to look around. Yep, everything inside was quite standard... And, and that's classic, the cockpit, hanging under the flat hull of the ship, instantly gave me that brand and unique Krait Feeling. Everything's perfectly fine once you get used to it, but I am not. So, either the ship itself, or the cockpit separately, felt like it was placed upside down.
20 Oct 2023, 10:17am
With my body’s annoying biological need taken care of, I rejoined Meowers in the cockpit, about a minute or two after coming into the ship. I found her on the ground near a vent already, with a lit cigarette, so I sat down in the same pose, about a meter away to let the vent pull any smoke away from me.

Since this was my safe space, pistol and shield generator were in the private cabin now. And I pulled off my jacket, letting it float to the ground behind my in the low rotational gravity. Only wearing a short-sleeved black shirt, which didn’t hug the body quite as much as the jacket, that left the remnants of the subject designation on my right wrist plainly exposed. I ignored it after a brief glance.

But now that we were here, I wasn’t sure where to start with my thoughts, and just sat there.
20 Oct 2023, 11:36am
"So, khm," I started, noticing that Kasumi were either unsure or couldn't remember what she wanted to say. "What's the thing you wanted to tell me about? Or... Shall I start with my idea first?"

At least the quiet rustling of the ventilation made the silence somewhat not that awkward as it might've been.
