Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

After packing all our things I hurried off my ship and headed for the hanger Des sent me. No one seemed to be following. Looking around I didn't see the person walking right towards me.

-OOF

"Sorry, I-"

"It's okay cousin, I did some digging. Kohatu is a very bad man. He hides behind his title in the imperium. You've got to be very careful. I can't do anything or I'll be found out. I'm risking enough being here now. Be safe."

A hand reached out and grabbed my shoulder, before the figure left.

What is she doing way out here?

I shook myself back to reality arriving at the hanger, my code buzzed me in.

I set down Des' and my bag right inside and shut the hanger door. Leaning up against the wall I let the duster I bought drape over my rifle. I was going to be ready for unpleasant visitors this time.

Shot off a quick message to Des,

"I'm at the docks see you soon."

Sam was not at the medical center, or at his ship. He was on my ship.

Chairwoman was there too. Sitting by the entrance ladder. She had got here fast, maybe something to do with the decreasing gravity approaching the docks. How was she able to stay grounded?

"August Davenport. Glad you made it." I said. So many questions.

At that moment Sam half-floated down the steps. I almost laughed. One leg and wheels! A motley crew.

"Sam, meet August Davenport, I'll fill you in later." "Davenport, this is Sam." No time for polite gestures.

"That chair won't fit through the narrow passageways in there, it will have to go in the cargo hold. Are you ambulant in low G? Can you walk, climb steps? If not, I'll carry you. Have you flown recently, sure you're up to it."
21 Sep 2021, 4:39pm
"Nice to meet you, Sam, Des Cartes," August smiles warmly from her chair as she looks to the Python. "Nice ship," she tells them both.

Looking to the stairs, she comes to the same conclusion regarding her ingress point. "Yeah, if your hold doesn't have a personnel hatch, you'll have to carry me up," she frowns a bit at the idea. Driving the chair over to the hold, August waits for it to descend.

While en route, she explains, "I last flew a couple days ago. I'd fly myself, but my Dolphin is overdue for its annual. Grounded. And, yeah, I'll be fine once we're off the spinning space station."

Jubei Himura"Right," Jubei replied. "I'm gonna go a little old school, and grab a drink."

His hair had grown out since they were last at the station, and he had taken the time to hide the scar over his eye. The change in appearance wasn't drastic by any means, but it would be enough to throw any would be trackers off of his back for a time. Anyone looking for the former inquisitor would easily pass over him, unless they were taking a good hard look at his face. Jubei even changed the colours and ID tags he wore, now sporting a brown and tan flight suit with tags that read 'Howlett, J.'

"I'll send you a signal if I find something. Otherwise, come to the InGaBa."

"Catch up with you in an hour," Ward said, clapping Jubei on the shoulder. The pair separated, with Ward heading towards an unoccupied lift.

I asked Sam to board, lower the cargo hatch and begin to fire up the engines. Then turned to follow Davenport.

"The only way I could get you up those steps and through the hatch would be on my back like a rucksack. Very undignified. Let's see if it would be easier through the airlock into the hold".

It was, but only just. I carried her, light as a feather, like a bride being carried over the threshold, moving sideways along the narrow walkway. Settled her temporarily in the small cabin, went to secure her chair and anything detachable against the bulkhead. Returned to the cabin.

"You say you're a pilot so you know the deal. We're not built for passengers. You might be more comfortable here than on a jumpseat on the flightdeck. I can secure you in a sleepsack. You'll need to wear a helmet for departure and jumping. I have spares. Are you wearing a Remlock suit? Is there anything I need to know that might prove to be difficult? Are you ill, on medication - paralysed or just weak? Is anyone going to come looking for you."

Lot's of questions, essential and no need to be oversensitive I figured.
22 Sep 2021, 6:06pm
I agree silently, being piggybacked onboard isn't a dignified means of boarding, but it gets the job done. Ducking low for the hatches makes for a couple of awkward moments, being close to a strangers neck like that.

Sitting on the bed, I look around what I assume to be her private cabin. Get a lay of the land, an insight into what sort of person Des Cartes might be. Breifly, I take my pad out and send a message to a friend on Jameson Memorial, letting them know I'm coming, to prepare Artemis' Bow for me. I add our origin, the Python's registry, and the pilots: Des Cartes and Sam. Nothing suspicious, just safety. I wasn't in the best shape of my life, and if Des Cartes had to fetch them, it'd be understood.

She returns and asks a bunch of details. Glad I had put a couple things in place- like making the nurses help me dress back into my suit.

"Helmet's back on the Dolphin, but I'm wearing a suit under the jacket. It's Spacer's Syndrome, by the way," I tell her, a colloquial for Acute Zero-G-Induced Musculoskeletal Atrophy. "I'll manage once we're off the station. Jumps aren't any problem, but If you could avoid any hard-g orbits around stars to get to the next alignment, that'd be gold."

Lying down does seem like a good idea, so I just sorta flop over on the bed, then struggle with both hands to drag my legs onto the mattress. I let Des Cartes strap the living cargo onto the rack and help her guide the helmet over my head, but actuate the seal myself. The sleeve panel lights three green and I give her a thumbs up.

On the flight deck Sam was half way through system checks and start-up. I was concerned. He seemed very quiet as if there was something bothering him, was he in pain maybe?

I realised that I didn't really know about the injuries he'd sustained fighting off Kohatu's heavies. Hadn't bothered to ask. He looked ok, a bit pale maybe. He could walk. I assumed he was just weak. Assumed he would improve with exercise and time. Now a metal support on his ankle made it obvious that he hadn't improved a great deal. Did he get tough news at the med center?

I quickly filled him in on my plans. Fly to Jameson, collect my 'Conda, and fly off a few light years to look for new life. Davenport a temporary passenger.

I strapped in. Called up for flight clearance, stared straight ahead and waited. "Good to see you Sam. Everything ok? What's with the boot?"
25 Sep 2021, 12:01am
"So, Sam, I'm happy to inform you these implants and exo boot will do well for you. I understand you've endured quite a bit. Your chest wound is closed yes, but you still need to take it easy for your lung to completely heal sir."

The med clinic doctor stern in speech but trying to smile and offer comfort with a hand on the shoulder.

I gave a sincere thanks and signed paperwork. The spot in the center of my chest hurt a bit. I found it only becomes and issue when I exert myself too much.

I DO need to take it easy, she's right. Hopefully our trip to Jameson is uneventful. Well, I'm more prepared this time and I left a good reliable pistol in Des' bag just in case.

Feeling the pistol in the inside pocket of my vest, I suddenly heard something that pulled me out of my day dream.

"Good to see you Sam. Everything okay? What's with the boot?" Descartes said, staring out of the cockpit.

Scratching my head and strapping in as the Flight Control officer chimed,

"You are cleared to launch commander, have a safe trip."

I glanced over forcing a smile through the chest pain.

"All good, I pushed myself a bit too much and my lungs are hurting a bit. Had to outpace a would be bounty hunter. I lost him and made sure I wasn't followed. It seems Kohatu has put a price on me. Oh and the boot? I went and got myself an exo boot and some nano implants to speed up recovery a bit. Doc said I still got to take it easy, but a week or so and I should be 100%. I found myself a nice hotel and had a nice pressurized shower. Then found my way to get some new clothes, as you can see. (I flapped my duster's right side that faced Descartes. Feeling stupid and blushing I began our egress from the station.) Anyway, I packed some supplies for us so we can be better prepared for unexpected visitors. How are you?"

"Fine.!" I said, checking systems status reports, 'Medium threat in Shinrarta Dezhra' Great!

"Take it easy on the way Sam. Our passenger looks thin enough to snap under high G boosts and turns. The last thing we need is to lose one."

"She say's her Dolphin has been grounded, unfit for travel. I think she should be too, but what do I know."

Feeling uneasy about the short hops ahead I added, "Be ready to wake out a.s.a.p. if we encounter trouble. Just get us there."

"So, you now have a bounty on your head. That will follow you everywhere - even if Kohatu doesn't bother. How did you discover that?"

August stares at the ceiling of the cabin, counting individual rivets as she waited for the ship's crew to go through flight checks and initial take off. Numbers spoken aloud make a melody of a song she'd learnt from home.

Plotting our course in the galaxy map I lined up our vector and engaged supercruise.

"My friends in the dragoons, my old trading company, forwarded me a message about it. This was also around the time I noticed a man following me to the med clinic. So I paid them extra to let me out the back and give him a hassle. Ha! They even acted like he was coming down with something, orderlys started to grab him and sit him down. He must've been pissed."

Opening the intercom to the rest of the ship I called out:

"Miss Davenport we will be making our first hyper jump, hold on to something if your aren't strapped in."

A jet-black python came into the port. IT was badly damaged and smoking from more than a few places, it had seen a fight and wasn't in the best shape. It docked with a loud thunk, the left rear landing gear was damaged and made the ship lean. Its pilot Rob finally managed to let go of his flight stick which his fingers had seemed to be glued to for most of his flight. He took a deep breath and sighed as the adrenaline had finally left his body and his arms shook with exhaustion. Now that he had a moment to breathe he finally realized how scared he was. This was his first fight and it didn't go well, sure he won but too many times for his comfort did he almost die. He remembered how many simulations he did and tips from seasoned vets he listened to. But practicing a fight and being in one are two completely different things; there was no fear of death and when he messed up in a sim he could afford to go 'Oh well' and try again.

Rob got up and got out of his ship. he got repairs scheduled to his ship and decided that he needed something to drink and eat. "Off to the bar.." he spoke to himself.

As Maul and Silas approached the docks, Maul suddenly stopped and reached his arm out to stop Silas as well.

"Damn, we almost forgot to dump that cloned profile." Maul said, turning to Silas as he pointed at a security gate over his shoulder with this thumb.

He dug the profile analyzer from his backpack and pointed it at Silas. A defeated beep that rapidly lowered in pitch came from the device.

"Heh, damn thing is on the fritz again." He said nervously, giving the analyzer a few solid thumps on his thigh.

Pointing it back up at Silas, he was met with the same result as before.

Maul lowered the device and cleared his throat. He looked at Silas from head to toe.

"You still capable of outrunning a few armed guards?" Maul said with a hint of a smirk.
