Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Assuming Silvia was too busy looking over the scans in the medbay to throw me a message or come back up, I decided to go down to her instead, Melli trotting behind me happily, and in watchful manner.

I said nothing when I came inside, thankful for the low gravity, knowing I was too weak to properly stand in anything close to Earth average, currently. Sitting down on the bed, I put some order into my hair, leaving it to fully dry out in the air, and waited for her to say something.
01 Jul 2023, 10:49pm
Hearing the familiar metallic tapping of mag boots, I speak up.

'Good to see Melli didn't need to do anything rash. How are you feeling?'

I finish speaking as I turn around in the chair. I have a puzzled look on my face and it looks like I have more questions than answers.

'Well it looks like you are a fucking hot mess inside there. A good portion of your neural network is sliced together with whatever this thing is inside of you. Honestly it looks more like a parasite with how aggressively it is working into your body. Though that could simply be that this thing wants to live and the only way to do that is to keep you alive by any means necessary.'

I project a side by side comparison of Kira and I's neural networks.

'I am certain you have already seen images similar to this but this one right here concerns me. You shouldn't even be alive right now.'

I know it's not anything Kira hasn't heard already. I flip the slide and continue.

'This region here if I were to do anything with this chip would be the best place. It looks like the main portion of everything in your head is stemming from this one singular point. I could in theory place replace that singular component with a similar sized item but it would hold a ton of risk. If I slip up or the replacement is slightly wrong you will likely end up dead. We wouldn't need to pull everything out of there but we could...'

I trail off as a thought comes to mind but in my rush I don't say anything to Kira instead I turn back to the desk and begin working away. After a couple minutes I speak again.

'So forget this stuff for now it will take some time to decipher. Look You may not like it but there are just things we cannot change. I don't think I change anything about your condition but I am still willing to try. Xenobiology is my profession. I went to school for it and have been in the field for quite sometime, so this presents a wonderful experiment. However, unlike Aegis or Azimuth everything will be at your pace and your comfort level.'

'I just need for you to be in a healthy state of mind and you need to be well fed. I am no therapist as you could probably have guessed but I am willing to at least just listen.'
01 Jul 2023, 11:16pm
“I told you that Aegis told me they weren’t sure they could do much to get rid of it. And I know that was genuine. You might not know Alba Tesreau personally, but I can vouch for her having a genuine desire to help with my… condition. If I didn’t want to subject myself to something, I always had the option of saying no.”

I pointed to how the implant had spread through the neural network within the brain, then a few sections throughout the body on a different picture.

“See those? Maybe I’m looking at it wrong, but those are repaired sections. Some of them were beyond saving and had to be replaced entirely. The ones that are merged… well, honestly, your guess is as good as mine for why it’s doing that, because not all of those needed to be that way. Part of me feels like I was an experiment for a Thargoid that decided to see how this could go, but it was somehow interrupted. I doubt I was supposed to be let go.”

“And I know I’m not supposed to be alive. Honestly, I might have preferred that to living through this nonsense. And I know you won’t like hearing it, but I’m not sure I want to risk replacing anything, or even placing an implant elsewhere. That cortical implant might react negatively and destroy it, or my brain might just be so damaged you can’t pull anything out, or put anything in, without irreversibly destroying it or the affected section. You haven’t seen what it actually looks like on the inside… the descriptions I got were not pretty.”

I sighed.

“Another reason it can’t go. The only thing that the people from Aegis were able to do was correct the placement slightly. Before then, I was getting phantom pain signals all over my body from when my nervous system got fried - thanks to a failsafe on a mind control chip, courtesy of Azimuth - and it was not pleasant.”

I wasn’t sure where else to go with this. I still wasn’t feeling hungry, and even felt turned off at the idea of food. The thought caused me to shake my head.

“I’ve told you what I could or wanted up there. You’re lucky I was not in a state to react to you grabbing me and tossing me on the bed, or your pet might have been the only thing between me and a broken arm. Not that I’m trying to be threatening, but please be careful if you have to do anything like that again.”

I couldn't say much else there either, only knowing that the subject wasn't off the table, but I didn't want to talk about it either.

Kira Goto Not that I’m trying to be threatening, but please be careful if you have to do anything like that again.”

'Eh.. bones heal. Already had plenty of broken bones. I'd do it again regardless of the outcome. A life saving is worth a couple broken bones.' I say as I shrug.

I look at the remaining few photos and transcripts and slouch back in the chair I'm sitting in. I press the tips of my fingers together and place my index fingers on my lips. I am thinking about the things I have read and come up empty handed.

'Well unless we come up with something you will be stuck like this. Best to learn to love it I guess.'

I gather up all the scans and send them over to my personal data console. It would take several weeks at the very least to decipher all the data in the files to even think about implementing this idea in reality
02 Jul 2023, 12:33am
Best to learn to love it I guess.'

"I'm not sure I'll ever learn to 'love' it. Tolerate at best. Whatever, as long as I stay human, and myself. Would be nice if I could just turn off the hive connection at will."

I didn't feel like telling her those pictures were all at least a month old, making a mental note to run a new scan that also properly analyzed the genetic material present at a later point. With particular focus on the brain.

"So... what now? If you're gonna go... please don't leave me alone."
02 Jul 2023, 1:01am
'Now....' I say with a bit of enthusiasm. '...is where the fun begins. I have enough data here to be able to at least begin to figure out what to do with all of that shit.'

I close the datapad and think about what Kira would need.

'Don't know what I'd do on the ship...... I did plan on going back home for a couple days to check in on my younger brother but I don't think you'd be up for that.'
02 Jul 2023, 1:07am
“I… I don’t know. I can’t stay alone. I would …” I let my head hang, well knowing what would happen right now, if I was left all to myself again. “But I only have this ship here. It is only good for moving cargo.”

“And you can call me Kira in here. Kasumi is for… outside. And comms. Or messages.”
02 Jul 2023, 1:25am
'Cargo is perfect! I am certain they are in need of some materials. Let me check with them and see what they would need.'

The fact that Kira was even willing to accept going to Earth was enough for me. I tap the device on my wrist and request a call with my brother Jackson.

'Hey Jackie! I have a few days.... well like 3 this week but uh how's the rebuild going? Need any supplies?'

'Hey Silv... Uh. ya could do with about 4 ton of concrete and a couple pallets of water if you are one your way into Sol. Oh I talked with Mellissa she is onboard with planning a reunion party for all of us once the house is completed.'

'Sweet we will be on our way! See you soonish.'

I hang up the call before Jackson even has a chance to respond to the "We" part. I turn back to Kira and smile.

'Nice name. So you up for a bit of manual labor? Not sure what system you are from but Sol is my home system. Earth's sun does wonders for peoples emotions. Plus where we will be is up in the mountains away from everyone.'

Melli jumps around when she hears we are going back to her favorite hunting spot.
02 Jul 2023, 1:57am
“Sol… okay, fine.”

I wasn’t sure about it, but I wasn’t in a position to argue if I wanted along, so I just didn’t say anything about it. Anything seemed better than to sit around idle with destructive thoughts going around my head.

“Just don’t expose me to the people there any more than I have to be. And if I’m going to be moving cargo around a lot, I’m going to have to change a few things up. I currently have the ship made for operating around Thargoid-affected systems.”

I shared my intended setup for the ship with her.

“So I’ve got some of those things in storage, but I need to get another beam laser and at least two of those module reinforcements. And put that laser through a round of engineering. Do they have those things here?”

I wanted to avoid the subject of my origin system, partly because it was awkward, but I also didn’t want to touch what I went through there with her either. Talking about a ship plan for pirate defense of a hauler - and because I didn’t feel comfortable without them - was of more interest to me.
02 Jul 2023, 2:51am
'Relax. If you are that concerned we can take my ship it's a Challenger. Still fitted for Xeno hunting but most commanders won't even bother looking at her. The corrosion burns on her hull provide enough deterance from pirates and I have enough cargo for Jackson's needs.'

I am not sure if Kira would want to be around a ship that had killed thargoids but it was still an option. I felt like she misunderstood the assignment I had in mind.

'Kira we aren't going to be running cargo. We are picking up some supplies and docking at what remains of my family home. I plan on helping Jackson and his team of 20 rebuild. My brother won't prod anymore than for a name, not like my sister.. little brat would pester you until your ears bled.'

Melli looks at Kira tilting her head. The name confuses her and the chattering is very obviously just that.

what the heck? Why other name?

'Because Melli not everyone is like us and can just wander around without much care. Which ship would you like to take?'

The question is directed at both Kira and Melli since in this case I am the one dragging everyone along.

'Oh I will say though Kira if you are going to refit your ship might I recommend reinforcing your bulkheads a bit.'
02 Jul 2023, 7:48am
We are picking up some supplies and docking at what remains of my family home.

“Look, I was just …” I didn’t feel bothered to explain why I was overly cautious to Silvia. “Ugh, whatever. Think what you want, but I have reasons to be careful. At least let me make sure that shield doesn’t have a chance in hell of dropping until I’m out, unless someone brings a battleship’s worth of firepower.”

I didn’t like the idea of sharing the ship with her either. I always flew alone, with the exception of having a fighter pilot onboard for that and only that purpose. But I wasn’t in a state to fly right now, anyway.

“EDI, be so kind and give her access to ship controls. But if it goes anywhere other than Sol and the station to pick the supplies up, lock it off.” I turned to Silvia. “Nothing personal. But I’m in no state to fly anything, and I don’t think you want to leave me to myself either. I’ll be in my cabin. Do wait around until the shield boosters are here and installed before leaving. Unless you have other plans on the station here, still. Whatever the case, I don’t care for the ship as long as it’s not something fragile that falls apart from a few pulse laser hits.”

“Oh, and I’m not going to leave it once we’re on Earth. I am not in the mood to be dealing with strangers.”

I waited for a moment to see what she’d say. I knew I’d at least want to get another thing or two from the cabin before taking off, regardless.

When I returned to the landing bay, I didn't have enough energy to do something more than go to the bed. So I took nap and when I got up, I finished my guardian-hybrid handeld weapons. As ex-armory designer I m really proud on it, I thought. Now only to try them somewhere. I packed luggage, searched for the nearest scavenger elimination mission at settlement as I wanted to try them properly. When I found it, I accepted it and hit the lauch button.
In next log (off station section is not good now since I don't want to mix my storyline with different ones) I will write about testing and maybe attach some simple drawings of guns

The arrival concourse main screen plays one of the messages from The Emerald Repatriation Society that has been appearing in station concourses and other places pilots tend to gather. Having started in the Cemiess system, the ERS messages soon began to appear more regularly in systems around rescue ships and in systems near Thargoid activity. Now, they can also be seen in most high-traffic starports throughout human space.

31 Jul 2023, 10:31pm
..."Roger that, proceeding to the pad four-zero, over", I replied to the traffic controller, noticing the increased repair and maintenance activity around the station. Some pads were closed, flashes of welding arcs contributed to the dimmed lighting, scaffolding and handrails decorated the outer and inner parts of the station here and there, and people in bright high-visibility suits were the large part of local population at the moment. Maybe that was the reason for them giving me the luxury of a large landing pad.

The pad descended, taking Marshmallow to the inner hangars of the station, and I got up from the pilot seat, turning off the systems. Placing my hand on the cheek, I rubbed it a little, as if it was feeling a bit sore. It felt sore for almost an hour, yeah, back then, after Mion slapped me, rather jokingly, but still enough to feel it, for 'risking my life again'. Ship entry override code was changed, not because I didn't trust Creamy, but because I thought somebody could intercept... decode... read... whatever, the message I've sent to him, so that he could enter the ship and bring my weapons to me. So they might... Argh. Okay. I'm paranoid and I don't trust people.

So, my weapons. "Meh", I muttered on exhale, looking at them strapped to the back and sides of the pilot seat. Going to the bar with the rifle on my back will certainly guarantee safety, as well as a label of an irredeemable weapon freak. Let it be the pistol and the personal shield generator. Still not a fan of wearing combat armour as a casual streetwear as some folks do. "Just because you no longer care if people are 'good' or 'bad' doesn't mean they suddenly stop behaving the way they do", Mion's words, said when she gave me several spare recharge batteries for that fancy thing.

Yeah, why the bar again? Besides being the obvious 'absolutely unnecessary and completely avoidable death risk', my last venture to the Maelstrom and onboard recorder videos provided some interesting information for our research department, and, whilst our, 'my' in that case, planetary defence forces were far from any sorts of action, and still undergoing re-equipment and repairs, I was given some of those new nerdy scanning-probing-prodding-whatever trinkets and an order to harass the Maelstrom Thargoid Party nearby again. And the bar was a perfect place to rest and refresh after a long flight. Almost perfect, since unexpected, unpredictable and, of course, unsafe things were happening there daily.

Hope no more coffee stains on my uniform this time.
