Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Sure, ok. So I got maintenance clearance to be here, so I'll do the inventory and see if that flies with Citi. After that I'll go back to the shop to get some stuff packed in case, and make some calls"

"If I can get them to release the ship early, I'll let you know. Okay?"
18 Aug 2024, 8:25pm
"...I'll go input our first attempt at the passphrase and hope it isn't the last and then remove Ninette." He paused for a second, his stomach gurgled in the silence. "...And then maybe see if there's a pizza joint close by."

As he turned to leave the dressing room he called out from beyond the doorway. "Willow, shoot me a message after you finish doing inventory, need to chat a sec."
18 Aug 2024, 8:52pm
With a few creative exaggerations, Willow finished her inventory and mechanical survey of Creamy's Orca. She couldn't lie too much, it would be too easy to prove her wrong if another team came to check the ship. What she did should keep the price down, and make it tempting for Citi Gateway to off load the ship.

After sending the report to Citi, Willow let Maul know she was free for a but, as he asked.

Sup dude. All done here, still in the cardo bay. Where you at?
18 Aug 2024, 11:32pm
Maul entered the words into the COVAS as it appeared in the book; ‘Wait and hope.’ His finger lingered over the enter key longer than he intended, it felt as though a force beyond him was reeling back the muscles that would allow such a simple thing as a single press of a button, but there was no unseen force behind the curtain pulling the strings. It was only him and his own internal thoughts.

*click*

The moment he sent the input, his slate lightly vibrated in his jacket pocket. It was a message from Willow just as he’d asked.

Hey, just up here in the cockpit. I just now sent our first attempt. Hoping this thing doesn’t lock down.

Without pause he continued with another message.

We need to watch our backs out there….Actually, I’ll be up here removing Ninette. Why don’t you give me a hand?
19 Aug 2024, 1:35pm
The cockpit wasn't what Willow expected, it didn't match the rest of the ship at all. Ok, it looked like the FSD room, or the other areas where work had to be done, so maybe Willow just wanted the cockpit to be as opulent as the living and leisure facilities.

Maul was under the dash doing something mechanical, instead of technical with the computer.

"So, why do you suddenly need help with your job?" she said to announce herself.

A brass instrument in an open weapons locker caught her interest. "Is this a trumpet?"

The blue and white hull of the Anaconda 'Yamato - II' glinted in the lights of the station interior as it slowly manuvered towards Pad 40.

Aeryn leaned back in the captain's chair and pulled up an old file marked;

//CLASSIFIED - AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY\\
'The Nymei Incident'

After a few short moments, Aeryn had quickly refreshed his memories of the details of his last visit to Citi Gateway, and the absolute shitstorm that had followed.
He couldn't help but wonder what had happened to the young doctor Neymei, Lord Goodness and Commander Leiren.
In truth, Aeryn was amazed that any BWSF vessel at all had been allowed to dock here again after they had shot up half the station.

The deck shuddered, pulling Aeryn out of his pondering as the flash of warning beacons from the pad danced across the viewscreen and the docking pan desecnded into the hangar.

2nd Lieutenant Amy Ryker, the Yamato's helmsman announced that docking was now completed.

"Very good Lieutenant, Chief, see to it that we are refulled and take on any additional supplies we need while we are here."
Chief engineer Bahduri nodded his aknowledgement before leaving the bridge to oversee the refulling operations.

"X.O, draw up a shore leave rotation and post a bulletin on the local job boards to see if their is any work available."
2nd Lieutenant Morgan, the Yamato's executive officer and chief of communications and operations snapped a neat salute before making his own exit from the bridge.

A short while later Aeryn was moving through the dockyards, his blue greatcoat whipping about him in the crowd.
It had been a long time since he had free time, since he had not been focused on removing the corrupt Marrallang Empire Pact from power back home, and now, he was at a complete loss of what to do.

As Aeryn moved through the busy walkways he spotted an information terminal, and decided it was time to saite his curiosity and began running a search for Lord Creamy Goodness the third, Dr Nerys Nymei and Commander Amata Leiren.

Vasil climbed up the cargo ladder into the Alway’s Lost. Not the easiest or most efficient way of entering and exiting the ship, but it had become habit. Throughout three decades of exploration and landing on uninhabited worlds, the cargo ladder saved energy when he set the ship in hibernation to go exploring, and it allowed a quick walk around to see if any local nasties had managed to latch onto the ship’s belly.

Lights flickered on when his boot made contact with the cargo deck. “Welcome back,” said Jefferson. “You have eight new messages.”

“I’ll check them in my stateroom,” said Vasil retracting the cargo ladder and waiting for the bay doors to close. The locks engaged, sending a slight vibration through the deck of the empty bay. Before leaving the bay, he looked at the ship status on the cargo hold primary display. “Jefferson, set ship systems to power level two, internal. Leave remaining level 3 to 5 systems on shore power.”

The lights dimmed as non-essential systems were shifted to station power. “Acknowleged, Commander. Power levels applied.”

Eight new messages. He’d acknowledged just as many while on the Honour Promise. Nearly all were related to ERS business; Status reports. Contract announcements. Expenditure approvals. Minutes for meetings which he did not attend. Logistics requisitions. Policy documents needing his signature. He may have been searching for a lost little lord, but actual business still needed to be conducted.

It was not until he started reading the one personal message that he realized it was over 25 years old. Another of Jefferson’s little quirks after 30 years of operation that it sometimes hiccupped old logs and messages as new when it felt them to be more important than newer logs

Vasil nearly deleted the message until he realized it was from Rachael. Vasil saved it to the archives. For all of its annoying idiosyncrasies, Jefferson had an excellent memory, and in spite of Vasil’s and Rachael’s lives eventually going in separate directions, messages like this were worth remembering.

Willow ThornThe cockpit wasn't what Willow expected, it didn't match the rest of the ship at all.

"Yeah, I think so, maybe a flugel horn?" Maul called out from beneath the front console over the sound of a ratcheting tool.

"Do you play?" An attempt to buy time. It wasn't exactly what he called her here to talk about but it'd have to suffice until he worked out what was in his mind.
19 Aug 2024, 7:48pm
Willow roller her eyes. Was he working up the courage to ask her out? Guys like Maul tended to have a thing for goth girls.

"Like dude, I got shit to do, okay? What do you want?"
19 Aug 2024, 8:28pm
The sound of the tool had ceased. Maul grunted as he pushed himself out from under the dash and got to his feet, his boots noisily clanked as they mag locked to the floor. A heavy sigh left his nostrils as he looked Willow directly in the eyes.

"Alright so, we're going to be heading to Fed space. With the FIA being so fuckin' nosey and creating the PDB, well, you can imagine what it did to an organization like The Network. They've pulled out of Fed territory entirely now. So only very few ops happen there anymore, if they do, it's usually pretty dangerous and comes with a high price and some strict negotiations between contractor and client. This is why they've slapped a bounty on my head out there. When shit hit the fan, a small sect of members that were active in Fed space had been tagged with suspected acts of terrorism, I was one of them."

"There are some dangerous contractors working with The Network, ya know? The kind that'd happily shoot your grandmother if the pay was solid." He stepped back towards the dash and leaned back on it to sit. "I just want you to know that that ain't me."

That was all he'd planned to say but his mouth just kept going despite his desire to leave it there. Guilt weighed heavy on his mind and it was bound to relocate and redistribute that weight one way or another.

"Listen, I know I apologized before and things got heated but I assure you, I'm no longer that person that you met before. I was dealing with the loss of my parents in the worst way possible, it was something I'd refused to accept for quite a while. They were murdered because some rich Fed corpo bitch's plan didn't go accordingly and I didn't die as her perfect little scapegoat. I just couldn't repress the memory of their death any longer."

"Uh, anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is..." He said as he scratched at his beard, a nervous tick he'd appeared to develop, he'd said more than intended. "...we both just need to be careful and watch each others backs out there. There are people gunning for folks like us, regardless of your level of affiliation."

That was a lot to unpack. Guys didn't tent to deal with loss very well. They 'Man Up' and ignore their feeling because of some outdated macho bullshit. She had to admit, it didn't help that society expected guys to deal with their own shit. Like only an our ago when the drones popping out of the storage unit made Willow jump, the first thing she did was call for the nearest guy to deal with the problem.

"Yeah, well unless the Network give their roster to the PDB, I shouldn't be on their list. I mean like, my file hasn't had time to circulate yet, you know? And if it's a real problem, you can fly on my ship or Vee's I guess. Thats if we don't end up taking this one, right?"

"With the scanner package I got on the Bramble, I can make enough back ground noise to mess up their scans worse than a jammer. And like, once we land, you'll look just like any other blowen out student that enjoys recreational substances, you know? It'll be cool"

Willow was going to leave it there, but bereavement was something she was all too familiar with thanks to returning the departed to their family. Just leaving it hanging in the air with out acknowledgment would just reinforces the stereotype that dudes should deal with their own shit, and not bother other people with it.

"So, recognising you got something to deal with is a real hard first step, you know? It amazing that you have started on that path. And like, it may feel like something you have to face yourself, but thats not entirely true, okay?"

"We all get knocked down sometimes, and like, I wont make you feel bad if you ask for a hand up, okay. No judgment here Maul, just support if you want it"

Most people add 'Just ask' to the end of that, but asking is real hard too. Just letting the guy know she knew where he was coming from was enough to start with.
19 Aug 2024, 11:09pm
Maul remained silent while giving Willow a simple nod. Being honest with others and himself was something new he’d adopted recently. It felt good to come clean about his worries and past trauma, as opposed to ignoring them as he had unknowingly been doing for years.

“Thank you, Willow. I extend the same offering to you as well if you ever need to talk.”

“I only wanted you to warn you of the PDB and their knowledge of The Network. If I’m tagged and my bounties are flagged, it may bring eyes upon you and Vasil. The FIA may start investigating you two as well for associating with a ‘terrorist’. If that happens, The Network will see all of us as a threat to their secrecy and blacklist us. We’ll have a swarm of professional killers on our trail. Hell, I’d wager they even have men on the inside working for the FIA.”
20 Aug 2024, 6:05pm
“New message, commander” announced Jefferson. Over the years something had crept into the COVAS’ algorithms that every now and then altered its tone and intonation. The slight pause after the first word clued in Vasil that Jefferson was confused by whether or not the message was legitimate.

“From?” asked Vasil, who had been waiting on the ship’s auto provender to transform some food capsules into a quick lunch.

Jefferson pronounced each word precisely and slowly as if wanting to ensure Vasil understood why it suspected the message was fake.
“Federal Customs and Visa, Mars.”

“Good. Display on galley view screen.” The autoprovender buzzed and slid out something that approximated the red beans and rice Vasil had asked for. While eating lunch, Vasil read through the message and the typical overly-worded bureau speak common to all government organizations. Once he found what he was looking for, he recorded a message and had Jefferson send it to Willow and Maul.

It took some wrangling but I managed to secure landing clearance at Olympus Village Spaceport on Mars. However, it is only for one vessel. If we take more than one, the others will need to dock at Mars High station. I’ve also rented a hopper for getting around OV.

I had to go through ERS to get things done faster, so if anyone asks, you are contractors with ERS and we are there on business. Willow, you are already listed as an engineering consultant. Maul, I added you as a security consultant so you should be getting a confirmation within a few hours.

I did not get fancy with the reason for requesting OV landing clearance. All I said was that ERS was looking to contact someone at OVU about alternate methods of COVAS encryption to protect proprietary data. Sometimes a half truth is better than a whole lie. Fed Customs and Visa gave us four days on Mars.

Anyway, it looks like we are good to go.

It felt real good to board the Honour Promise today. Last time Willlow boarded the ship, she was blown away by the decadence of the interior design and luxuriousness of the fabrics. Now she was looking at the ship like something she was going to turn into a funeral parlor. It was a smack in the face for a savings, but it was also an investment for her work options.

After putting a standard covas in the slot, and installing the software, Willow flicked the guys a text.

OK guys, we're clear to take the HP to Mars U if you want. I mean, I want to take the Barb bcs I know it's got everything I'll need, but we can go on whoever's ship.
Let me know

After reading Willows message, Vasil checked with the station to find that Willow had snagged the Honour Promise. Damn, she was good. She closed the deal with the station before Vasil had even started looking into how much it was going to cost.

He was not upset. Willow had saved him buying something for ERS that he considered a useless extravagance. While the cost could be easily absorbed by ERS, he thought that it might be putting a significant dent in Willow’s bank account, and that made him feel a bit guilty for not needing to expense a party yacht to ERS.

He sent a quick reply to Willow’s message.

I’ll pack up some things and be over shortly. I don’t see any need to fly the Always Lost to Mars. It’s a deep space explorer and the Feds might get upset if I start probing them.
