Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Hardee har har." replied Maul, squinting at Lambast with a feigned disdain.

"How about you stop worrying about me and let's just go meet this date of yours. Ya know, Kaisla should really be here to approve of this future Mr. Mercy." he said, teasing back at Lambast.

With a slight bow of his head, he playfully gestured towards the door exiting the galley.

"After you, Miss Shiny Boots."
03 Jul 2024, 7:39pm
Responding to Mauls fishing about mister Vasilescu would just make him grab hold of the rope and shake it like a playful dog. Regardless, the banter lasted into the lifts to the main concourse.

"You know, for a chap that's had an epiphany and had chosen to live a better life, you seem to want to spend most of it injured mister Montresor"

For a moment, Lambast looked at Mauls miss matched cybernetic eyes.

"You know, speaking of disfiguring injuries, would you like a nuralwear processor?"

She looked back at the numbers climbing on the lift display.

"With one of those, you could replace your cereal-packet-prize-prosthetics with some new nano-grown cyber eyes full of nifty extras"
03 Jul 2024, 8:19pm
He scratched at the side of his head behind his ear as he mulled over the offer. Neuralware was a rare thing to see in the galaxy and Maul could only think of the potential dangers and exploits that came with such a thing. Disregarding the notion entirely was careless, as evidence proved certain types were helpful for those with disabilities. Though they were more prominent amongst the wealthy than they ever were the unfortunate.

"I'm not sure if a neuralware processor is right for me. Though, now that you mention it, I could use some new optics. These have been buggin' out on me for a while now. Lots of artifacting and they're getting pretty slow at adjusting to different levels of light exposure. Sometimes I'll wake up and my right eye will be overly sensitive to lights while my left adjusts just fine. If you have someone you'd recommend to replace them, send me their deets."

Joining Lambast in watching the numbers climb, he then leaned against the wall and continued thinking out loud as he commonly does.

"Yeah, might shoot for something as close as possible to ganic eyes. Though, I do see the benefits of having the Insight Hub HUD in the optics itself for ammo readouts and text logs but I don't know, I could just use an Insight for all that. At least that thing is hardware I could remove if it were ever exploited, ya know?"

"But..." he shrugged. "...maybe watching you use yours will convince me otherwise. I appreciate the offer Lamb."

Extending a fist to Lambast and expecting her to bump it back wasn't his intention, he knew her better that that, but it was simply in his nature to do so when thanking a friend and he'd done so without thinking, withdrawing it now would seem rude but holding a fist out towards her felt downright silly.
03 Jul 2024, 8:50pm
Lambast looked at Maul's fist as if he'd just picked his nose and offered what he'd retrieved for inspection.

"Aaanyway" said Lamb watching Maul's fist go back where it should be. "I imagined you'd have concerns about the network security of having a processer in your spine, but the doctor explained how safe it was to me"

What she was told made sense while it was explained to her, but she didn't know how to articulate that to Maul.

"Something about it being a one way communication unless you have advanced cyber-limb, or such installed. The experts will explain it to you when you go to have some better eyes installed. I have put you on my medical cover at the Silver Mountain Medical Centre in Cubeo. They are on the cutting edge of the new medical tech offered by the recent strides in nano technology"

The lift door opened. She held the cake inside the lift as she leaned out to look towards the Galactic. He other hand rested on the pommel of her short sword. This was Citi Gateway after all. The coast looked clear, full of normal people doing normal things so Lambast and her cake stepped out.

"Should you visit Silver Mountain, mister Montresor.." she continued as she strolled to the bar "..you will get the very best VIP treatment, and you may have done what ever you feel you need doing. I'll even come with to hold your hand, if required." she said turning to give Maul a condescending smile.

"By the way, I sure mister Ortager would turn a multitude of colours should he learn you too have acquired a Nuralwear Processor. He's desperate for one so he can walk again, but he just can't afford it. What a shame" she finished without the slightest hint of sympathy.

Stepping into the bar, Lambast slowed her pace, and looked to see if mister Vasilescu was present.

"... and you're coming with me."

I put the arc cutter into a bag to carry it - better like that than to just haul around openly, because that'd look a bit... odd - all power sources removed and safeties engaged, in case security asked what I was carrying, and hopped back out of my ship to find that tool repair shop of Willow's.

Assuming I remembered where to find it, but it'd probably have its own address or something like that in public station registries, so it probably wouldn't be too difficult. I had more concerns about getting shoo'd out of there, but only a little. The effect of my two drinks earlier was making me a little less reluctant to hop on over there... but, then, I wasn't exactly sure why I was. Now, I had a legitimate reason to pay it a visit, on top of my more subjective interest in it, unrelated to odd hiccups in a tool.

I shook off the thoughts and just went looking. Wouldn't get anywhere if I just stood there, letting odd doubts bother me.
05 Jul 2024, 8:02pm
Underneath the light emitting from Willow's repair shop, Maul's skin glowed whiter than ever and then suddenly blue as the sign cycled through it's preset colors. He chomped away at the vending machine burrito he'd bought on the way over and squinted his eyes as he looked at the sign go from blue then to green. Seeing as green was the universal color for "GO", he dropped the empty foil wrapper in the bin outside the shop and walked in.

The shop looked pristine, as pristine as a repair shop full of components most people would label as junk, could be. His eyes scanned the shelves, noting many of the components he found useful himself and used regularly. The scanning of the shelves was more of test of his cybernetic eyes abilities to adjust to the new light levels. A test that wasn't going so well they were adjusting wildly, similar to a cameras aperture, if it were borderline defunct.

The shop was empty at the time, just as he'd waited for, and Willow wasn't behind the counter. Though, he could hear something rummaging around in the back room. Unsure of if it were an employee of hers or Willow herself, he approached the counter and knocked on it's metal surface with a whistle.

"Hey, anyone back there? I'm looking for the owner!"
05 Jul 2024, 8:37pm
"Oh, right yeah okay!" called Willow from the workshop

Customers, she wanted those. You like, needed them to keep a shop open and stuff.

"Looking for the owner?" she said softly

Looking for the owner meant selling things, or on this station right now, a shake down.

"Like, one moment okay?" That gave her enough time to get the plasma shotgun off the rack by the door and check it was ready to fire. "The shield is on Willow, and like, it a salesman, right? Relax" she said before peering around the workshop door, carful to keep the weapon hidden.

"Hi, so, if your selling something I don't want it, and if this is a shake down, I like, need to make some credits before I can tell you now way, my guy"

The shield and armored counter created a great safe space back here, and Willow felt great about that.
05 Jul 2024, 8:40pm
Because my memory sometimes worked about as well as a rusted gear, I hadn't been able to recall at all where this supposed tool fixing shop was, nevermind its name. So, after a consultation with one of the - rather useful - terminals scattered around port here and there, I found myself in front of it. And not much of a sign of activity.

"Hm... looks empty."

Aside from the hooded man, that was. Looking for Willow, probably. I decided to not just waltz in there and sit down somewhere just outside, instead, unless invited in. Could always excuse myself by showing what I carried in the bag... and part of my mind now thought it would've been funny to instead unleash a cat from it, but that was better suited as a silly joke in a place less sensible to having fur scattered around it.

And I didn't have one, anyway. Just then, there was some more activity, of course. Impeccable timing, as always. Even though, really, timing wasn't always one of my strongest suits.
05 Jul 2024, 9:13pm
He narrowed his eyes trying to make out if the tiny glimpse of the woman he'd saw was Willow or not. It certainly sounded like her.

"Willow?"

Maul hadn't seen her in a while and when he did, he was at one of the lowest points of his life. Barely conscious and coasting on whatever substance he could get his hands on. But he'd never forget what happened to her, that's why he was here.

"It's Maul, the uh..." he chose his words carefully in case anyone else was back there with her. "...we worked together with that Imp chick, Descartes."
05 Jul 2024, 9:39pm
Okay, so Descartes she knew, but this guy wasn't ringing and bells. The haze from the shield above the counter was fuzzing his face a bit. Willow put the gun back on its rack and stepped out to get a better look at this guy.

He knew her name, but so what? It was on holo screens all over the station, and above her shop, so she got closer and looked harder. She came to a conclusion.

"Eh, so, you and I have never met"

05 Jul 2024, 9:49pm
I thought about subtly drawing some attention to myself waiting outside, but that would've probably come across as a bit rude or impolite - and I did have some manners to show for - so I just decided to wait and let Willow and the man sort out whatever was going on between them.

I had time, so waiting a bit more didn't bother me much.
05 Jul 2024, 9:58pm
He couldn't help bet chuckle and nod in agreement with her. What she said was true in a sense, he was essentially a different person than he was the last time they'd met.

"Well, I'm the one who helped pop Descartes' pod open when you found her, and the same that dropped you off at the medical facility after those bastards...did what they did to you."

Thinking for a moment, trying to find anything to jar her memory, he decided to add something last minute.

"Uh...last you saw me I probably still had that green mohawk and was sweating profusely."

He looked her up and down with a look of concern.

"Seems you've recovered well."
05 Jul 2024, 10:08pm
Oh right yeah, now she remembered. Folding her arms and cocking her hips, Willow laid downs some serious evils. Still happy the shield was in place. The shotgun was close by too.

"So yeah, I remember now. You were the shitbrick that yellowed when the Goids turned up, right? Like, what did you expect in Goid space, huh?"

She fished around for something safe and sweet that could be found floating around in deep space.

"..Like..Space..Puppies?"

So yeah, it was lame, but she was pissed now.
05 Jul 2024, 10:30pm
He deserved whatever insults she was capable of conjuring, he knew that much.

"That's fair." he said, lowing his gaze to the countertop.

"You're right though, it was cowardice of me. I was going through some shit back then. That's not an excuse for my lack of action either, just the truth of the matter."

Sliding his hood off his head, he looked back up at Willow.

"Things have changed now though and I've been looking for you. I...uh...just wanted to say that I'm truly sorry...for everything that happened. I shouldn't have gotten involved when in such a state. The job you offered was just a distraction for me at the time, I had zero regard for anyone's safety, and that's fuckin' shitty."

Something about Willow seemed slightly different than before, she seemed stronger willed and more confident but Maul couldn't be sure if it was his memories being distorted by the substances he had been on at the time.
05 Jul 2024, 10:50pm
"Well yeah, no dar. And you.. Like its"

This wasn't fair. The buttmunch on the other side of her counter was one of the reasons Willow had been through the hardest time of her life. And there he was being all sorry and admitting it.

"Its like, real shitty of you to stand there being all like, sorry and shit when I'm trying to shout at you. Makes me sound like the asshole when your the asshole, you know?"

"Asshole"
