Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

There was more talk that Willow didn't know about going on, so she kept her attention on the burgers. Maul had eyed one of her breakdown burgers, but that was wishful thinking on his part.

Besides, the grill cook had a stack ready to go; Maul could bug him for some. Moving her plates away from Maul a little, Willow shifted to defend her food and waited for the talk to get around to something she could add to.
21 Jul 2024, 11:20pm
Maul Montresor “I don’t know man. Lamb can certainly be difficult, no doubt about that, but she really seemed to be upset with you turning out to be more of an opportunist than a friend. She ain’t got a lot of those, ya know?” he stammered a bit. “Umm…but yeah, that’s just how business is, I guess.”

"Nothing personal, just business. I overestimated how invested she was in finding Goodness and building her pet project starport, that's all." Vasil never could understand why people took some things personally. Coincidentally, most of his failed negotiations seemed to be due to that very reason. "I'd still do business with her, but she seems the type to hold a grudge, so I doubt she feels the same."

Vasil motioned for another beer. "As for Goodness, though I have the COVAS, I have no idea where the ship is, it's name, or its origin system of record. I assume it was commissioned in Cubeo since that is where his family is from, but that is a wild-ass guess at this point."
22 Jul 2024, 12:23am
Maul chose to drop the subject when it came to Lambast and focus on the task at hand instead. Business negotiations at such a grand scale as theirs made him feel uncomfortable anyway.

“Right the COVAS, I’ve got a setup on my ship that’ll let me prod a little deeper into its inner workings of the thing. The kind of tech that the Pilots Federation aren’t too keen on folks having.” He dug around in his jacket pocket and continued. “Failing that, I’ve got some hardware stashed back at my place in the Beldarkri system.”

Finally finished with rummaging around in his pocket, he slapped his data slate down. “You’ve shown your hand, here’s mine.” Maul slid the data slate across to Vasil. The screen was full of diagnostics readouts, cargo manifests, ship module health/usage, power distribution, previous locations, current location, contact history and more , all of it feeding directly from Vodan’s fleet carrier “Anansi”.

“Right, ya’ll look that over and I’m gonna grab a burger or three.” Maul jumped up from his seat, leaving the table and approached the bar, his stomach finally getting the better of him.
22 Jul 2024, 12:46am
Vasil looked over the pad then slid it toward Willow. "The Anansi," he said indicating the carrier's name. "That was one of the raider carriers involved the battle at Summerland 8b. Got the hell kicked out of it but it came out on top. Probably undergoing repairs somewhere that prioritizes money over legality. Its captain, Vodan Hooder, is the one I got the COVAS from."

"The carrier the raiders were after, the Destinies Jester, ended up getting mauled. They did not get the Jester's captain, but I'm sure they settled for the consolation prize. I did not think any more were in service, but the Jester had a capital grade interdictor field generator."
22 Jul 2024, 11:37am
Now that was something Willow could get into; old tech that someone had maintained, and still actively used. So much of humanities advances had been lost to time, and the passing of small communities that held the knowledge. For a civilization that had defeated faster than light travel, humans were not very good at communicating with each other.

"That must have been like, really something to see Vee. So, it sounds like Hooder is the one we need to talk to about Charles. Like, if he had the covas, he at least knows where he got it from, right?"

"So I guess he's not the sort of guy you can just call up if he's an active pirate, huh? Whatever, it gives us a first step in the right direction. Once I'm done eating, I'll like, put together a profile and dig in to their recent history for like, the last years or so while Maul handles the covas"

"As far as missing persons go, this is a great first step"

A good start it maybe, but the guy was gone for about a year, so the first step could very well be the only step in the right direction they took.

"Yeah, you definitely do not want me involved in any discussions with that Hooder fellow. I pretty much screwed him to get the COVAS. I would not be surprised if the problems ERS is having with attacks on supply transports is related to him. "

Vasil shrugged and leaned back in the chair, beer in hand. "I'm not sure how much he knows, anyway. When I offered to exchange the Jester's captain for information on Goodness, he said his deal with Mercy was for the captain for the COVAS, which might have some clues to Goodness' whereabouts. Though, I have no idea why he would keep the COVAS for so long. Also, If you think it might help, I can get you the sensor, transponder, and open comm logs from the ship I was using to recover pods from the battle."
22 Jul 2024, 5:22pm
"Huh, its something. A real something if you scanned some of the carriers wake data, but it looks like Maul has that covered. What ever, I'll like, try to build a picture of Charles's last movement's with out talking to a douchebag that like, steals other captain's"

With a burger in one had and her pad in the other, Willow shuffled her chair over to Vasil.

"So, give me everything you know about Charles, yeah? I'll find his online presents, and find out what sort of guy we're like, dealing with. With luck, we'll get a good direction after some homework, right?"
22 Jul 2024, 8:03pm
“Unfortunately, there is not much,” he said with an apologetic sigh. “His father is a Brigadier. One of those lead by example, get stuck in with the boys, blood and guts types. Mother is a courtier. For some reason he did not join any of the Imperial armed forces as you might expect from someone of his family’s standing. I think he is less the stiff upper lip follow tradition type and more of a wealthy, thrill seeking playboy type.”

Another beer arrived. Vasil exchanged the new for the empty before continuing. “His adventure seeking is something of an embarrassment to the family, and probably how he ended up getting involved with Hooder and his crew. Rumor is that he may have spent some time on this station but no word on if he had any acquaintances.”

“The COVAS might be the biggest lead, and not just because it could have info on his last where-abouts. I think it was custom built, but you and Maul would be better judges of that.”
22 Jul 2024, 8:17pm
"Oh er, that's great and all, but I mean, like, his full name, age, and like pictures, known ships, addresses, and so on. Like, I also need to know how to contact his family and friends, ok? Anything like that will help me get right Charles Goodness"

"Like, I need to get the basics right first before I go to the advanced stuff, you know? But like, he sounds like a dude, the sort of person people remember. Maybe worth asking around here, you know?"

"Whatever, I'll follow my formular for finding what's lost, and like, cross reference what I find with Maul's data mining"

She picked up her last burger and got it mounted in the nibble position.

"Haven't done this for a while, it like, neat to be on a case again"
22 Jul 2024, 8:29pm
Maul came back to the table with a plate of burgers and fries and took his seat again. His mouth was already full from a bite he'd taken of one of the burgers on the way over. "Sho, washyouthink?", he finally swallowed and spoke again, "Surely having tabs on The Anansi's movement could be used to our advantage somehow, right?"

Willow Thorn"Oh er, that's great and all, but I mean, like, his full name, age, and like pictures, known ships, addresses, and so on. Like, I also need to know how to contact his family and friends, ok? Anything like that will help me get right Charles Goodness"

He'd overheard Willow before he sat down and with a mouth now full of fries, chimed in with what little help he could between chewing.

"Mmm, if he's got any legally registered ships, it shouldn't be too hard to find deets on em."
22 Jul 2024, 9:55pm
"Charles Avery Bramshier Goodness is the full name." He told Willow. "A right proper name for a noble Imperial son. Even better if you say it in a posh accent." Vasil imagined the name and accent, thinking that it did sound supremely upper crust. He took a drink of his beer to pre-empt a chuckle. If, on the off chance Creamy was still alive when found, Vasil would have to resist the urge to ask in that same posh accent and with the accompanying understatement required of it, 'Charles Avery Bramshier Goodness, I presume.'
22 Jul 2024, 10:19pm
"Wow, like, that's some name. So, yeah, that's what I was thinking, right? I do my thing, and Maul you do yours with the covas, and once we have some dates, we cross reference that with the Anansi data from the time, and see what we come up with, yeah?"

Now the burger was gone, there were the left over sides to vacuum up. Luckily, Willow still had half a bowl of captain Mambo's secret sauce to help compensate for anything that had gone cold.

"Like, if it goes well, we should have a good lead to follow in a day or two, no doubt"
23 Jul 2024, 2:12am
“Alright, we have a way forward.” Vasil tapped the comm badge on the collar of his mav suit. “Jefferson, transfer initial funds for both Thorn and Montresor and place Tier 1 funds for Goodness Sake in escrow.” Vasil waited a few seconds before hearing in his earpiece Jefferson’s confirmation the money had been transferred.

Vasil tapped the badge to close the connection with his ship. “Initial payment for you both should be arriving in a few moments. After we finish eating, we can go get the COVAS from my ship. I’d also like to engage your services, Willow, for a power issue on the Always Lost. Whenever the electromagnetic docking clamps engage, there is a power surge in one of the hard points and it tries to deploy. I’ve disabled it for now rather than risk an accidental deployment. Stations get kind of antsy when you start popping weapons in the docking bay.”
23 Jul 2024, 10:16am
"Sure, no sweat. That problem may be related to a computer issue or a conflict in power distribution assignments. Either way, it's an easy fix."

Already diagnosing what could cause that problem, Willow couldn't help thinking out loud.

"Could be a weakening, or damage to the power conducts. Like, two of them in the same place, allowing a bleed, but that's real unlikely. Oh, er, I mean, yeah, I'll look at it for you." she said realizing she was talking shop at dinner.

Finishing off her fries, Willow dragged her board towards her with her foot.

"So, I'll go get my tools, you just ping me what pad your on, and I'll meet you there. Kay? See ya"

With that, she picked up her half can of Vega Juice and hopped on her board once she was clear of the Grill shack.
23 Jul 2024, 12:20pm
I happened to be just outside that grill, studying its menu for later reference - since I had already eaten - when Willow came out and hopped onto some kind of motorized board. Though it looked more like a plank with some - probably - magnetized wheels, to me.

“Oh. Hi.”

And she was off. Busy with something else, I guessed, and probably more important than me.

“Never seen anyone go around on something like that …”, I remarked… if, mostly, just to myself.
