Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vasil nodded knowingly to the android. "I think I understand," he said, in his best conspiratorial tone. "She works you like a Torval mine slave. If you are in trouble, blink twice. Or... since you only have one eye, I guess that would technically be winking."

Willow Thorn"Oh, like don't mind him, he's a sweety just visiting. So, ah, I was like, real quick I guess, coz I got no other jobs you know?

"So let me see, I changed the emitters, put in a new PSU and power management system. Its all aliened, tuned, and cleaned. Good as new and ready to help you out on the next Reboot'n'loot"

"What did I say that'd be? Like, 2.9? 3.5? Oh, guess I better start making a note of my quotes. It was something like that, right?"

"O-kay ..."

I'd just take her word for it, but didn't exactly have an interest in the man anyway. In fact, more just tried to do my best to pay no attention as I walked over toward the counter, standing to the side of Willow a little rather than directly in front.

"Think you said something like... three? Thousand, that is. I didn't pay enough attention to when you mentioned the price, to be honest."

I turned around, then, leaning against the counter with my back, looking at the shop overall... which, luckily, didn't look like a suggestive gesture because my lower half was hidden by said counter.

"So, what's the rest of this stuff you're selling? Is it all just parts for tools?"

I'd only seen parts for tools, anyway. And while I had about as many technical skills as someone who'd never touched a mechanical or electronic device in their life, I did at least recognize a tool when I saw one. Probably.

Jana Razeki "So, what's the rest of this stuff you're selling? Is it all just parts for tools?"

"Er, common parts for common devices. Like, you know, the stuff everyone needs. Hey Odie, do you remember what I quoted for overhauling this cutter?"

"Please deposit your sample within 24 hours" it replied

"Right, no help there I guess. Um, we'll split the difference and call it 2900c okay?"

Getting the Cred Reader ready, Willow remembered Maul had said the SU had a time limit on it. He'd said an hour, right? Took her about 35 to sort out the cutter, and she'd been waiting for about 5 before Vasil turned up, so she had about 5 left till the thing timed out.

"Oh like, crap guys, I got this time sensitive thing I need to do. Like, I'm totally sorry, but I want to get on it before it to late, you know?"
08 Jul 2024, 8:36pm
And there was my not so perfect sense of timing at play.

"Oh. Well, uh, go look at that first, then. I'm not really in a rush, so you can keep my cutter around until you've got time to do this payment thing properly. Or, I guess, just hand me that reader and I'll let the money come your way, then you hand me my thing back once you're done."

Never did like being rushed much. The world also seemed to be conspiring against me trying to just chat with someone interesting for a bit.
08 Jul 2024, 8:49pm
"Yeah, like its best we sort it now, coz like, I don't know what this thing is going to be about, you know?"

Pushing the draw with the cutter back to the counter side, Willow entered the cred amount in to the reader and waited for Jana to do her part with the reader on the customer side.

"Like I'm totally sorry about this Vee, but this thing just landed in my lap, and I like, it really, I mean I want to look into it you know? Sorry Vee"
08 Jul 2024, 9:19pm
"No problem, Willow, I'll stop by next time I am on station." He headed out, understanding the need for urgency, nodding politely to jana as he passed her. "And don't work too hard," he added as he left.

Willow Thorn"Yeah, like its best we sort it now, coz like, I don't know what this thing is going to be about, you know?"

Pushing the draw with the cutter back to the counter side, Willow entered the cred amount in to the reader and waited for Jana to do her part with the reader on the customer side.

"Okay, fine. Got it."

I entered my information into the reader, not paying much attention to 'Vee' walking out, and confirmed the transaction, waiting for the device to show that it was successful. Then I grabbed my cutter, putting it back into the bag it came with.

"There you go." I held off on the inclination to call her by the nickname 'Will', as a shortened form of 'Willow'. "I'll be hanging around here - the station, I mean - for a bit longer, if you want some company, or a chat. Only if you're interested, of course."

Only a simple offer, nothing else behind it, which was reflected in my tone. With that said, I walked on out of the shop as well, leaving her to whatever her personal business was. While aware my act of walking out presented a kind of a view, that was kind of unavoidable with my shape, and I had a feeling Willow didn't have those kinds of interests anyway, in both ways. And my interest in her certainly wasn't that kind, either.
16 Jul 2024, 1:20pm
So that was a thing. Willow unlocked her shop and walked in. Kicking open the door to the workshop, she dropped her shopping on the bench, and leaned against it to catch her breath.

"Lock everything and shields on" Nothing happened. "Oh crap" said Willow, remembering she still had to get everything linked to computer.

After manually getting the place secured, she slung a meal in the microwave and sat down at the small two-person table in the brake room with her pad out in front of her.

"Like, any moment now"

She'd done the job sure, but like, putting the case through the guys window and wrecking about 5 hydroponics tents at the same time wasn't exactly ninja like stealth. Okay, she wasn't told to be like the breeze, but she guessed it was kind of implied if you wanted to be part of a secret organization.

Whatever. Willow could find work even if this Network lot didn't want her. As long as they didn't stop her from using them, everything would be cool. She'd never find another group of guys and girls she could call to remotely deal with all her computer needs.

^Ping^

Worries never seemed so worrisome when she was chowing down on Eureka-Tika, spicy meats with an Indian tinge. And that noise means it's ready. A tin of the stuff Vasil gave her would go well with it, so Willow picked a purple colored straw, and sat down to eat, unwillingly keeping one eye on her pad.

The replacement for his cybernetic eyes weren't anything special. Nothing as fancy or technical as his long time friend Lambast's Neuralware setup. The eyes were basic and function mostly like the ganic grapes in everyone is born with. The last replacements were mismatched colored components that were swapped in a hurry out of necessity more than anything else. If he didn't lose both his eyes, he would have much preferred to keep a part of his humanity intact and have the eyes he was born with. With the new replacements though, he still chose to keep the heterochromia look, with his right eye brown and left eye blue. They had been that way for so long that anything else would be hard to adjust to again, at least it would be for him. Too much had changed lately, even if for the better. Sometimes you just have to hold onto a bit of the past for the sake of remembering where you came from.

Stepping out of his Courier, his eyes adjusted to the bright lights perfectly, feeling somewhat odd after all this time. He checked the straps on his backpack by tugging at them slightly to make sure it was secure. The magnetic pad on the back of his new jacket helped more than the straps when it came to keeping the pack in place, but the nature of his being called for "backups in case of failure" in almost every situation. It felt nice to be outfitted again with all his usual gadgets. He bent over and haphazardly stuffed the legs of his pants into his Remlok boots, portions of it still bunched up and free floating in the low gravity. As he made his way off the landing pad, he threw his hood over his head and began his trek to Willow's shop. He had news to deliver.

---

At arrival, it was clear that Willow's shop was locked tight. The shutters on the windows obscured the view inside. With no legal options left, he did the only thing he could think to do that wouldn't potentially anger anyone. He knocked hard with his fist on the door hoping that if she were inside, she'd at least hear the thumping.
16 Jul 2024, 8:54pm
Wasn't it always the way? She was at the best bit where she eaten most the rice, so now she had nothing but meat chunks and plenty of spicy sauce left on the tray, and someone had to bang on the door.

"Out side view" she said picking up her pad. Nothing happened "Damn it. Like, still not linked, and I don't have an outside camera yet"

There was a list of Jobs Willow intended to do the last few days, instead she had jumped around the bubble playing delivery girl for the group she used for, what boiled down to, tech support.

In fairness the shop should be open at this time, so she went to see who was there. Opening the shutters, Willow found her self eye to eye with the cowardly cavalier. Seeing him sparked an empty headed moment where she couldn't quite figure out what to do, but inspiration came from deep within. Putting her face close to the window, Willow said loudly.

"I'm having lunch. Come back later"

Then she flipped him something with shiny black nail polish to spin on, and closed the shutters.
16 Jul 2024, 10:15pm
Maul laughed after the shutters closed. Her response was quick and akin to something he’d have done in her position.

Getting inside would have been pretty simple. Willow’s shop being in such close proximity to the docks meant that things such as electrical panels, wiring etc. were mostly exposed and labeled for the sake of convenience when quick alterations and repairs needed done a simple cycle of her shop units systems would likely cause the shutters to reset. But Willow wasn’t just anyone, for all he knew, she’d rigged up another layer of security behind the public facing security measures. Lacking any of that, well, he knew for certain that she had a gun at the ready in the back.

Seeing this as a good time to practice patience, he sat down on the bench outside her shop to check on the Anansi. According to the ships system reports, repairs had progressed greatly and stress tests were being ran on the fleet carriers systems. With enough luck and a decent plan, he’d hope to be able to use the Anansi as a way to find Vengerfield, or more clues that would lead to Creamy’s location.

Closing his eyes, he sat and contemplated the reasoning behind his obsession with finding a man he’d never met. The best answer he’d conjured was simply “to help”. He’d hurt enough people in the past few years. Maybe this was an overcorrection, but it was surely a better goal than feeding into his addictions. Though, it could be argued that this was just a different addiction. The adrenaline, the mystery, he couldn’t NOT focus on it.

He opened his eyes and his stomach squelched.

“Talk about an addiction, where was that vending machine that served burritos at again?”
17 Jul 2024, 7:45pm
She'd chewed each mouth full at least 21 times, and taken her sweet time over her drink. After that, Willow ordered what she'd need to finish the security arrangements, and get her shop linked to its computer.

Now she really should catch up on the orders that had come in for her to for fill. They were, after all, pretty much the only business her little shop had. She'd made him wait long enough, so Willow set about opening up, and she did so pretending Maul didn't exists.
17 Jul 2024, 8:18pm
Now that the shutters were raised and the shop was unlocked, he gave Willow a moment to recede back into her usual business as he packed up his backpack again and went inside.

He approached the counter with his data slate in hand, with a smirk, he began to read the text onscreen loud enough so Willow could hear him in the back.

"The contractor (Alice), while successfully fulfilling the request of the client (Neville Clay), has damaged settlement property and distressed the client, causing a stir within their personal lives. We have taken action to ease these disruptions within the clients personal life. As the sponsor you will be held liable for any further damages from this point on. -The Network Administration."
17 Jul 2024, 8:24pm
Willow had to smile. That report sounded kind of cool, and Maul would get in the shit if she fuck up again. Now this arrangement had possibilities. Colleting the box she was packing, Willow took it through to the front of the shop.

"So, I like stole 3 rolls of Thermal Fabrics too. How do I report that to the bosses. Like, if I need to talk to someone, how do I contact them anyway?"
17 Jul 2024, 8:38pm
He slid the data slate back into a pocket on his jacket and leaned on the counter.

"Ya don't, at least not yet. If you have any problems, you tell me and I report them. If you give me your new contact info, I'll shoot you an invite to the job board. After a few successful jobs, the Net Admin's will contact you themselves with a direct line for submitting reports or setting up contracts yourself."

"Ah, by the way, no one really likes old Neville these days anyhow, so no worries on that complaint. It gave me a good laugh when it came through."

He followed Willow with his eyes as she worked around the shop.

"Yeah, he pissed off some high ranking Imp military doofus and wound up bringing a lot of heat down on The Network. Only reason he's still around is because he ran the clock down on the hit contract that was issued on his head. The Network strong armed him into middleman work now. Only deals with hand offs and blah blah, doesn't matter, the dude's a dickhead."
