Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Maul picked up his data slate and and poked around at the screen as he continued to eat.

"That COVAS by the way," he said to Vasil, with his gaze still very much on his slate. "if you want to just send it over to my ship, I can get cracking on it ASAP. She's stored in dock 12, name is Desumashin, ID is MA-21E."

He popped another couple of fries in his mouth and glanced up at Vasil briefly.

"If you're not cool with me having the COVAS alone, feel free to join me. Can't promise it'll be anything riveting though."
23 Jul 2024, 8:53pm
"Thanks for understanding that there might be some hesitance to hand over a valuable piece of equipment. However, there will need to be some amount of trust between us," he said. "When you are done eating, we can hit my ship and I'll give you the COVAS."

Vasil leaned back in the chair, beer in hand. Though he looked every bit the proper Imperial when decked out in a custom flight suit for ERS business, he looked and felt more comfortable in the old, Un accessorized mav suit he was wearing. All he needed was a few days of beard growth to fully look the part of a typical salvage operator.

"The COVAS took a bit of a beating when being recovered and does not look pretty, but it is intact. All I've done is a basic low-level scan to ensure the components were not damaged but even that returned some odd findings. I think this is a custom design. Not on the level of an artificial machine intelligence, but definitely not off the shelf."
24 Jul 2024, 12:28am
“Huh, custom edits to a COVAS isn’t something you see everyday. Even more so if the hardware inside is returning odd findings, as you said.” he said, scratching at his jawline, deep in thought. “I’d wager that whoever altered the thing has likely also set up some security measures to keep people out.”

“Shit, we might have to isolate the thing before we even plug it in. Shut down all devices and ship modules, leaving only the machine it’s plugged into powered, that sorta thing.”

Maul finally brought himself back into the moment. He spoke to Vasil with confidence and the same familiarity and respect that he gave to everyone he worked a job with.

“I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of sketchy junk out in the black. All it takes is scooping up the wrong piece of salvage, or the right piece if you’re the attacker, and boom suddenly the salvage turns the tables and starts scanning your ship for any exploitable devices or weakness and the next thing you know, all your ships systems are belong to us.” He smiled and laughed lightly at the corny joke. “Just like going fishing, er, phishing. But yeah, I’ve been on both ends of that, it sucks.”

"Nothing more dangerous than someone who thinks they know what they are doing. And that is why you call the professionals."

Vasil pulled an unregistered cred pen from one of the many pockets on his suit, set a transfer for the total bill plus another 25% and tapped it on the table's black pay pad, essentially paying cash. It was not that he wanted to have no record of his being here. Small places like this tended to appreciate clean, untraceable, and thus untaxable currency.

"Speaking of professionals," he said tucking the cred pen back into a pocket. "I have the feeling that there is some past personal issue between you and Willow. I don't need to know what it is, only that things can remain professional between the two of you."
24 Jul 2024, 2:10am
Maul exhaled hard between tightened closed lips, the pressure release and sound of air escaping his mouth very much represented the tense relationship him and Willow had.

“I’m speaking for myself here, but yes, I do hope things stay professional. It is my full intention to keep it that way at least.” Then he shrugged, changing the subject to Willow. “She, on the other hand, may still have some unresolved hatred or anger towards me.” His brow furrowed and his tone changed to one of sorrow and understanding, his posture physically mirroring the change. “I can’t say I blame her though honestly.”

Vasil listened. He saw none of the usual evidence of deception. No hand fidgeting, no darting away of the eyes when making a claim or asserting something, no unconscious little shake of the head that indicated what was being said as truth was, in fact, not.

"Okay. If you are comfortable with the situation, I am." His stock expression began to crack and he let out a brief chuckle. "Sorry, something one of you said earlier about her salvaging your eyes reminded me of song verse,"

A knight was offended by tales of her prowess.
He thought that such stories could only be lies.
When he met her at last he almost died laughing.
He certainly died when she plucked out his eyes.

"Forgive my dark humor," he said standing. "Sometimes it the only companion you have when thirty thousand lightyears from civilization. I am heading back to my ship. Take your time and come get the COVAS when you are ready. The asp explorer Always Lost, designation SCF1C, Bay 37.

Maul threw his hand up in a relaxed fashion and waved as Vasil departed. The lyrics Vasil had recited caused a smirk to creep across his face, it was nice to see the man loosen up but once the meaning behind them finally burrowed through his thoughts and settled, the smirk vanished. Willow was as much of an unknown as anything else discussed within the confines of this job and that made Maul feel uneasy. She seemed normal from the outside, smart, handy, attractive, but something about the look in her eyes was different now. He knew it could have been the drugs he was on the last time they'd met that was playing a part in skewing his memory of her, but what if it wasn't?

He popped another fry in his mouth and tried to stop thinking, if only for a moment. It was an exercise he'd picked up recently that so far had a zero success rate, but that didn't stop him from trying. He closed his eyes, almost meditating. "Always Lost" he said, after a short lived silence. He then began to nod his head gently as if he were agreeing with the statement and opened his eyes. "Always."

Vasil entered the Always Lost via the ladder to cargo hatch #2. Even with the ship’s lift field, his suit boosters, or the cargo bay’s extendible prow being easier means to the quarterdeck airlock, he preferred the cargo deck entrance. After three decades of landings on uncharted planets it became a habit of his to enter and leave the ship via the belly hatch.

Lights in the cargo hold flickered to life. “Welcome back, commander,” said Jefferson.

Vasil retracted the ladder and sealed the hatch. “Jefferson, transfer Ninette COVAS from isolated storage and prepare it for transfer, then send a message to Thorn and Montresor letting them know I am onboard and they can stop by at their convenience. Include bay number.”

“Messages sent,” said Jefferson. “You have one new message from the Emerald Dawn tagged as OPREP-5”

“Understood,” said Vasil heading toward his stateroom. “Queue message and establish seccomm channel to ERS contracting. I’ll be working in my stateroom.” He promised Willow to add her parents to the list of ERS engineering contractors so they would get inside info on possible post-thargoid salvage locations. He might as well take care of that now.

“Did you mean to work in the Cargo Ops station?” asked Jefferson. “Your suit feed indicates elevated blood-alcohol levels. Cargo Ops is closer and there is less of a risk of—“

“Jefferson, stop being helpful. It is annoying.”

The Lakon diagnostics unit Willow brought with her to help diagnose Vasil’s glitchy weapons port problem wouldn’t communicate with the Asp Explorer’s computer, or its covas, Jefferson, very well. Even after Willow paid for the latest software update from Lakon for the unit, it still threw up conflicts for modules the ship didn’t even have installed.

Willow was fine at getting a computer to do what it should, provided the computer's OS was one she was familiar with. This computer said it was running the Pilots Fed approved Lakon OS, but it didn’t act anything like the one she was used to.

There was nothing for it, she’d have to get into the guts of the Always Lost, and see if there was something she could do mechanically to fix the glitch. Over the next few days, Willow spent a few hours crawling around the Lost, fixing every little niggle she came across, and mapping the power conduit layout.

On her brakes, and in the evenings, she scoured the interstellar web looking for information on Charles Goodness and his past movements. She even spent time waiting for the long-range relay to Colonia. The guy was not shy about posting online. He did post anything and everything frequently, then stopped for months on end before low-key revisiting his most prolific sites.

She was shocked to find out Charles was the piano guy from the Galactic Bar; when was that, last year? She’d almost talked to him then, but she lost her bottle when he smiled at her. He gave her a friendly enough smile, but it made Willow feel like Little Red Riding Hood in front of the big bad wolf, so she ran away.

Now she had plenty of leads on “Creamy” to look into, the Always Lost problem needed solving. She'd occasionally cross paths with Vee as she was ferreting around his ship, but she was in diagnostics mode, and mostly technobabbled at him if they talked at all. Eventually, after mapping out the power conduits, Willow came up with a blunt force solution to the problem that the glitchy computer couldn’t interfere with.

Hey Vee
So your ship's computer is like, totally scuffed okay. Get Maul on the thing, or better yet, scrap the whole system and get a new, up to date one. So I fixed your problem by putting the weapons ports and landing gear on completely isolated circuits starting at the distributor. If they glitch now, it's because your ship is like, haunted or something. Oh, I fixed a load of other stuff too, so like, be careful coz now stuff works the way it should. And dude, you got credits, buy new things now and then. Kay?

Oh, and we all need to get together soon to like, talk about Creamy, okay?
Catch up soon xx

Willow Thorn Hey Vee

Thanks, Willow. And since you say I have credits, I expect an invoice for the work you did. We’ll talk about all the Goodness once Maul manages to work his magic on Ninette. Also, your folks should start seeing ERS rebuild and restore announcements within the next week.

It had been an interesting few days with Willow poking around on the ship. More than once he had to tell Jefferson to ignore the “unrecognized invasive lifeform” getting into the cable runs and access panels.

“That’s Willow Thorn,” he kept reminding the COVAS. “Do not vent atmosphere or engage any other vermin control.’

To which Jefferson would politely remind Vasil, “Understood, Commander. But be aware that it is illegal to keep an unknown invasive lifeform as a ship’s pet.”

Vasil did not bother trying to correct Jefferson’s thinking that Willow Thorn was the name he’d given the alien species crawling around the power distributor. Jefferson would likely choose to ignore the explanation when it was convenient to do so. Like when asking to eliminate the pest in the conduit for the third time in two days.

Vasil had come to accept the quirks that had developed in Jefferson’s interaction algorithms over the past 30 years. He knew it was due more to Jefferson’s interaction with him rather than the COVAS developing any real intelligence or personality. There were times, though, that the algorithms caused the COVAS to act almost human. Vasil wondered if the difficulty Willow had with fixing the ship was due to the algorithms telling Jefferson that the Willow Thorn in its side needed to be removed.

Yeah, he could replace the COVAS with something newer and more efficient, but replacing Jefferson would be like replacing the ship’s soul.

Maul Montresor“Alrighty, well I’m heading back station side now with Ninette. Willow, if you want to meet and compare notes, holler at me with a time and place. Here’s to hoping we find a trail to follow.”

With the shop shut, Willow had set up camp in the backroom workshop. She had 3 computers, and a bunch of pad's propped or flopped all around the bench she was sat at.

"Er so, I'll be in the workshop for a while" she said to the room without looking up from her notes. "Like, it'd be good if check all this again to see if I missed anything, and like, I got a holo-conference unit I can set up if you want to tel-prez this."

Flicking her conclusion to the computer with the biggest screen, Willow inhaled to get ready for her presentation. She was kind of relived the guys were out on their ships, it made talking to them much less stress-inducing.

"Okay, so are you guys ready, coz there is like, a lot, you know?"

"Okay, so, Charls has like, a huge media presents. And for like, ages he was no problem to find you know? As long as you were like, looking for Creamy, he never calls himself Charls. Then, there was a thing that happened here, and he was, like charged with assault of security officers, vandalization of a mag-lev carriage, reckless endangerment of station operations, and he was wanted in connection to the death of like, a man and a woman in a motel just up the way from the Galactic Bar"

"So, not long after that, he did this thing on Irrational Exuberance in Forculus. He’s like a celebrity there, you know? He doses holo-shows with the Benny Cosmo, who’s like, huge in that area. So yeah, he uses another name, Jonny bright, but it's our Charls, no bout”

“Er, like, after doing a secret agent thing, on The Benny Cosmo Show, with like, a teal wolf body modder; so I found the feed of that episode if you want to like, see it. So anyway, he went missing for ages after that. I mean, like over a year”

“Yeah, so, the next time I can say with certainty he shows up is right here, in the Galactic as entertainments manager, slash bartender. And a few months after that, Vodan Hooder comes in causing trouble, then Hooder and Creamy leave the station on Creamy’s ship. And like, that’s the last word on him”

“So ok, locally, we could talk with the bar staff, and security about him. Or like, if we can find them, Ina Muir, and Silvia Sharpe. He mentions them in his posts a lot”

"The ship he left on was a Krait MK2 called Knight of Goodness, armed with the latest kit, at the time, for AX titan infiltration. So, he paid for it, but it's registered to Errand of Mercy, and they registered it missing while he was on CIti. I don't know why it wasn't impounded, so that could be worth like, an investigation."

“So, we may want to try out Cleve Hub in Eravate too. Like, where he was here, he did so many runs between here and there, donating food to the station. And like you remember the trouble we had with the Axe Men here Vee? Maybe they like, know something too. Coz like, they were all up our ass about bringing in food, right?”

“On Irrational Exuberance, we could talk to like, anyone, you know? But Benny Cosmo is like, a friend of Creamy’s. But like, celebrities are real hard to talk to”

“I got like, a hold full more information, but I guess this is what I think is like, relevant to us right now. Okay?”

Vasil pulled the Always Lost out of the flight paths for Koontz Port and paused his passive scan tests on passing vessels while Willow presented all of her findings.

“So, Creamy-” Vasil had to pause. He could not explain it, but using the nickname made him uncomfortable. “He seems to like re-inventing himself. The best outcome will be if he’s decided to adopt another stage name like he did with Johnny Bright and is now one of the lounge acts on a luxury mega cruise ship. But since his last known activity was leaving on his ship with a known pirate, I doubt we will be that lucky.”

“My first inclination is that the pirates took his ship and got rid of him. However, why would Hooder keep the COVAS for over a year afterward? In my very brief dealings with him he did not strike me as a fool. It would make more sense to have destroyed any evidence of a connection to Goodness.”

“Lots of leads to check out.” It occurred to Vasil that he’d managed to piss off a number of them--Lamb from Errand of Mercy, Hooder, and the local underworld--in the course of his time back in the bubble. “Not even sure where we should start.”
29 Jul 2024, 5:35pm
There was so much information to go over, but Willow had a proven method for finding what was lost. That didn't mean it always worked, but it was the method that had the most positive results.

"Yeah, keeping the covas for so long is real weird. So, I think Hooder is like, the safe bet. It's like, the ones closest never see it coming, you know? It's like they are too close to see what's really going on. Failing that, you got Lambaconda Cruise, out of Robigo. Goodness flew for them a lot, and like, that's the mother company of Errand of Mercy"

"I mean, if it was their ship he was using, and they didn't have it impounded the moment he landed on a law enforcing station, there's questions to be asked right? And hey, they would have movements of the ship registered; and like, if we get into the covas, we'll have cross reference. Especially if it turns up on Hooder's carrier records"

"That's like, three arrows pointing at Hooder, you know?"
29 Jul 2024, 7:18pm
“Yeah, I probably should not have done Hooder wrong getting the COVAS, or ruined the working relationship with Lady Lambast trying to rush a deal with her in return for the damn thing.” While he regretted the later, he believed the former was the right thing to do even if it had more serious consequences.

“When I tried dealing with Hooder for Cream- I mean Goodness’ –location, he said he did not know where he was, but that the deal he made with Mercy for helping him in Summerland was for the COVAS. So, there is something in it that will help. I got the feeling that Goodness was alive the last time Hooder saw him. But a lot can happen in a year.”
29 Jul 2024, 10:16pm
Maul sat quietly and listened as Willow and Vasil discussed possible leads. The mentions of Robigo and Cleve Hub made him wince. He’d caused a lot of trouble on Hauser’s Reach back in the day and possibly even more on Cleve Hub. Those were among the locations he tried to forget existed.

“Vodan should have known better, he’s probably more upset with himself than he is anyone else for that sour deal. It made him look weak and in that line of work, that’s a nasty label to carry.”

He paced back and forth in the small room aboard the ship that housed most of the electronics as he spoke.

“That said, the only thing I’ve got from this COVAS is some French words and the location of some sort of proxy server located in an independently owned farming settlement a few jumps away.”

“Back to Vodan though, maybe we could drop some sort of bait, lure him out and some answers out of him. The guy has to be feening to improve his rep after going through all that trouble with that FC battle and still walking away empty handed. Hell, I even overheard a few of his crew talking shit about him.”
