Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vasil would have departed for Cemiess shortly after finishing his second slice of cake at the bar, but leaving a station without some form of profit from the visit, or something in the hold to generate profit at the next stop, always bothered him. Even though the Onoarea was outfitted primarily for VIP transport, sixteen tons of empty cargo space was not acceptable.

After checking the markets, Vasil placed purchase orders for fifteen tons worth of palladium from Koontz Dock in Inara. Apparently, palladium plating starships was the current rage on MacKenzie station, and palladium was fetching exorbitant prices.

Vasil was on the Onoarea's flight deck finalizing his flight plan and cargo loadout when Nicolai announced an incoming message from Octavia.

“Play message,” he told the COVAS.

Vasil, when do we begin the new settlement construction on Cubeo?

The message was terse and demanding, much like his sister. He considered not replying just to irritate the hell out of her, but he’d already pissed off one strong-willed woman today. He did not need the headache of a second one. Especially since it was his sister.

“Nicolai, record message: Octavia, the negotiations broke down. However, there is still an inroad. I’ll discuss it with you when I arrive. It involves Goodness family on Cubeo and something the Count is looking for. Nicolai, end message. Send.”

That should pique Octavia’s interest. Getting in with Imperial Old Blood like the Goodnesses could significantly boost her political ambitions.

Lambast Mercy"No, that won't be happening. There was a much better solution to my travel inconvenience than building a star port and all the support one of those require to operate"

"I suppose I got fixated on using my spaceship, forgetting there are terrestrial air craft that don't worry air traffic control, and environmental busy bodies too much"

Maul looked a little disappointed knowing he wouldn't get to poke around inside the COVAS. Leaving a mystery dangling like that always bothered him, but this wasn't about what he wanted, this was Lambast's deal, not his. That wouldn't last.

"Damn, well, Creamy is still out there somewhere right?"

Rubbing his head he thought for a moment about how his own parent's would feel, if they were still alive, they'd be worried sick wanting to know what had happened to their son.

"We should find him, whether he's alive or dead." he said looking at Lambast with an unwavering gaze. "It'd land you that star point you want and we'd be putting his parent's minds at ease."

Flicking his data slate to life, he pulled up the readouts from the Anansi.

"I mean, Vodan has to report to Vengerfield at some point right? Maybe we can find a way to get Vengerfield to call all the troops home, put the heat on them somehow."

He was beginning to lose sight of Lambast and everything around him as he began conjuring various methods of achieving his goal.

"Like, what if we tip off OMNIPOL, give them the list of registered crew members on the Anansi and scare them enough to fall back into Vengerfield's arms. We could follow them there...or maybe we put a crazy hit on Vengerfield using the Network? That'd entice enough people to scare the shit outta him, maybe he'd bring home as many members and guns as possible to protect him."

Both plans had their issues but that wasn't the point of his rambling, his gears were turning again. He looked back at Lambast again to see if she had any opinion on the matter.

"I don't know. I mean it's a start, isn't it? We should do something. Vengerfield has to know something, right?"

Lambast listened tapping her foot impatiently waiting for Maul to finish.

"Maul, the man as arse, I don't have the slightest investment in his wellbeing anymore. His family are politicly better off without him, and they know it"

But there was her obligation to her own family to consider. The Goodness's held the lands next to the Mercy estate, and vexing the neighbours never lead to a peaceful life.

"They are put out that my farther was elevated, and that mother and I have made the Mercy name financially more potent than their own. How ever, I should inform the count that a chap that couldn't even bring himself to say their family name is going to try and weasel his way into some land is on the horizon"

Holding her wrist behind her back, Lambast started to strolled towards the lift to her dock.

"The old warhorse may not like me, but he respects my military record and ability to get things done. I'll leave it to his natural distain for underhanded tactics, and prideful, territorial neuter to do the rest"

"I'm... not your first actual customer, right?"

"Jana! Right right. So you'll be my first repair at least. I've sold a few parts, but like, people order what they want you know? And have me deliver. Shop front is a waist of time I guess"

Pushing open a large draw in the counter, Willow nodded to it.

"Like, pop her in there and I'll take a look. Already got a good idea what's wrong"

Maul rolled his eyes and jogged to catch up with Lambast's large strides. He couldn't in good conscience knowingly leave a person missing without at least attempting to find them and this isn't something that could be done alone.

"Yeah, yeah well just think how pissed The Count would be if you managed to bring back his son. It'd further establish your families dominance. Think of how the public would react to knowing the Goodness family are so inept that they can't even manage to find their own missing heir, instead having to rely on the Mercy family to solve their problems. They'd be at the Mercy's mercy."

"Not just the Mercy's but that damned daughter of theirs." he said with a devilish grin.

Stopping to face her friend Lambast decided to make her position clear.

"Maul, that Goodness spawn was what you would call a school bully. He was a daily unpleasantness I need to deal with at the academy, until I accidently stabbed him one day in fencing class. I'm glad he's missing, mister Montresor"

Turning away, she continued walking, remembering how good it felt to brake a trading foil, and then 'fall over her feet' so she cold find the power of push the jagged brake through Creamy's armoured vest.

"The insufferable toad is lucky he lived next door, or I would have accidently killed him instead. I will not be spending any more time on the man, mister Montresor"
07 Jul 2024, 9:41am
A school bully? He could hardly believe Lambast of all people would still be dwelling on something that happened so long ago.

"Right, so he made fun of you as a kid and, what? You're still mad about it?" poking the bear, he prepared for the claws. "I mean, I used to get made fun of too by some of the kids in the housing complex we lived in, so I get having a shitprick kid living next door. That was so many years ago now, if any of them needed help today, I'd probably reach out."

He thought back the visit he and Lambast had recently had to his parents grave.

"The other day, when you came to me on Dalton Gateway. We stopped by the McKinley’s flower shop, remember? Their daughter Misty that works there that gave me the flowers for free for my parents grave, she used to tease me for being so quiet, always implying that something was wrong with me, like I was slow or something."

Shrugging with an exaggerated gesture as he walked alongside Lambast, he began to smile, thinking back to more innocent times.

"Now look at me, I hardly ever shut the fuck up and she's grown into a sweetheart. People do tend to change, you know?"
07 Jul 2024, 9:57am
Her impulse was to turn around, kick him in the shin, and let him know she wouldn't cook dinner if he carried on. Maul always did exactly what Lambast told him not to do anyway; it was some sort of rebellious, or dominants display, but it did make him predictable.

He'd just buy something greasy that was heated in a microwave, and continue bothering her while walk slowly because he was limping. There was another avenue that may bear fruit later. He was a very skilled hacker after all.

"Oh you are being tiresome mister Montresor, but as you clearly care so deeply for a man you've never met, I shall pass on your details to the Count. I'll represent your eagerness to be of assistance to Count Goodness, and I'm confident he'll have reason to make use of you soon. Happy?"

Willow Thorn"Jana!

"Well, I guess it's better than nothing.", I replied, shrugging - because I didn't know what else to say to that - then dropped the device in the compartment. Though I was kind of glad I wasn't the first one to buy anything here, be that part or service.

Even if my body alone could've served as some kind of advertisement material driving up customer rates... probably not for the reason of them actually looking to buy something, though.

"There you go. Have... fun, I guess? Seems like this is your kinda thing anyway, working with all this... mechanical stuff."

I gestured around the shop with my right arm, since it was free, not being used to lean on the counter. And definitely made the attempt to not put any sort of negative implications into that statement... because I wasn't, and very much appreciated as well as respected the people who had the skills - and the brains, unlike me - to do this work.

"Ah, and in case you're wondering what I use it for, I don't break into places with it... well, not to steal, anyway. Abandoned places don't power themselves up when you take up a mission to get it running again."

'Right, that's enough for now, Jana.', I told myself in my head, also telling myself off for not being able to keep my mouth shut sometimes.

While it was true that he'd never met the man, that hardly mattered to Mau, it was principle of the matter. Perhaps he'd latched onto this as a form of over correction due to his past carelessness when Willow was in need, that too did not matter to him.

"Happy?" he asked, looking at Lambast with a face washed in disbelief. "Can't say that I am, no. It's just, damn Lamb, I can't just sit on this Anansi hack and do nothing with it. Especially if it could assist with saving someone in need. You may not like the guy, and hell, I probably wouldn't either, but he's still a human being with a family and friends just like...you."

He wanted to say "us" but recent revelations had proved that statement wrong.

"Oh like, come on" Willow tipped the draw back, and took the cutter out placing it on the work bench. "Like, braking in to places is the best use for a cutter, power link combo. And hey, who doesn't like a reboot'n'loot run you know?"

She plugged the cutter in to the diagnostics unit, but she didn't need it. To be sure, she put a plat in the way of the beam, and fired it up and checked the beam for yellow streaking.

"Yep, there you are" She pointed at the beam as if Jana should know what to look for. "Your emitters are stressed. That puts extra strain on the power cells, and like, your safety override shuts down the cutter"

Taking the case off, Willow stated the repair with out explaining the options she could offer her customer.

"So, I can over ride the safety shut off, but that will eventually like, burn out your power cells. Like, changing the emitters will get her back the way your used to using her, but I think you should change the emitters, and the entire power system. Coz like, that has been pretty stressed to, you know?"

Thinking about the parts she'd need, and the work it would take to fit them, Willow tried to come up with some fair prices.

"So like option one is, um 400 creds, the emitters plus fitting should be like, 1200 I guess, and everything that needs doing would run you .. Got to be like, 3K. Maybe worth letting me have a look at that power link too, you know?"

Still walking, Lambast hoped this would be the final word on the matter.

"I was under the impression you knew me mister Montresor. In what universe could you possibly imagine I would care about the welfare of some one I don't like? I suggest you find a person that shares you view that their are not already too many morons in the galaxy, and have them help you track down Lord Goodness"

"Oh, well ..."

My stance shifted to something slightly more awkward, with a matching expression as I scratched my head.

"I never said I only went in there to reboot the place. But... I do leave some of the personal items behind anyway, don't want to stumble across someone's... personal secrets. Or sensitive stuff. Everything else? Pf. The big corpos don't need it that much. Care less about the people than their precious profit margins, anyway."

Willow's price suggestions surprised me, though.

"Yeah, uhm, no offense, but that seems a little low. Don't need to worry about me being able to pay, I've got enough. You can probably imagine by how I look ..." I glanced down at my body, saying that. "... anyway, yeah. Pretty sure other people offering the same thing you do make you pay way more. And, sometimes, for a lot less quality."

I felt tempted to add a wink to the end of that, but chose not to.

"As for options... do the repair job proper, would you? If you don't mind. I'm not really a tech person, but I don't want the thing exploding in my hands, you know? Or... whatever burning the power cells out does."

I paused, thinking it was probably better to reword that.

"I'll... take the full repair option, thanks. No safety overrides for me - I like it nice and reliable. Should be that way so I don't end up with a busted tool, or worse, while I'm getting shot at by scavs. Or those funny Thargoid drones... I'll pay whatever you need me to. As long as you're not ripping me off."

That last sentence was definitely more of a tease, especially in tone... but that one, I made a wink for. Hopefully to make it more obvious I didn't actually expect to be. A person that actually cared about their work instead of just the profit margins, you knew them when you saw it, and that was very much the case here.

That was that. There was nothing he could say to Lambast to change her mind on the subject. If he was going to aid in the hunt for Creamy, he'd be doing it without her.

"Fair enough, Lamby. Guess I'll tackle this one without you."

He continued to walk with her until they stopped at the point where they had to split up to go to their respective ships.

"I guess this is where we go our separate ways then." said Maul.

It felt odd assisting Lambast through this and her walking away empty handed from the entire exchange. Their usual adventures ended in more than what amounted to a fizzle.

"Thank you for always being there for me."

Sure, it was sappy and he knew Lambast hated sappy but he wanted her to know he was grateful anyhow. "

"I'm glad I'm one of the few you do care about. I'd literally be dead by now if you weren't around, with that said, please contact me if there's anything I can ever do to help. I owe you just about everything after all."

"Ha, no. I mean come on, this is the standard cutter that came with your Mav right? They're like, a selling point, you know? Not, a top of the line tool. I can have the fabricator make most of what I need to fix it, and I got like, plenty of the parts I can't make, you know?"

Whipping the case off and freeing the emitters took almost no time.

"I mean it's like, the alignment and power regulator settings is the hardest part of this job, right? And I need to keep in mind how much a new cutter like this is to buy, you know? I mean, if this was a real tool, it would be totally different, right?"

Lifting her head, Willow call out towards the workshop out back.

"Odie, get the Mav parts crate down please?"

"Yes sir" followed by robotic sounding movements came from the backroom.

"So, this is going to taaaaake..." She tapped her power driver on her finger "Bout an hour I guess, like providing I don't find any more problems. Okay?"
