Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The Informant sounded calm enough that Vasil could not tell for certain if the threat to walk away was legitimate, or a bluff. However, the informant immediately proposing a payout increase confirmed Vasil’s suspicion that this was an uncomplicated money negotiation.

Vasil remained quiet, letting the lengthening silence hint that perhaps more money was not negotiable and that he, too, was willing to walk away from the deal because of it.

He calmly connected to the Long Road’s navigation feed. A small navigation holo of the surrounding systems projected up from the slate.

“The posted reward is for information leading to the whereabouts of the missing subject, nothing more,” explained Vasil. “However, you have knowledge the general public does not, and your information may warrant extra compensation once operations are concluded.”

Vasil paused a moment to let the 'once operations are concluded' qualifier sink in. “We propose an immediate transfer of the three million upon receipt of the system and Cartesian coordinates where the subject was marooned, no questions asked. We propose a further half million once our agents verify system and planet details, another half million if any remains or DNA are recovered, and another two million if by some miracle the subject is found alive. Are we in agreement?”

Vasil queued up the reward transfer, an automated and oddly tempting voice announced “ERS Missing Persons, reward funds pending transfer: Three million credits.”

Three million was right there for the taking, just hanging in digital space ready to drop into any account with a few taps of an OK button and inputting some numbers. Two million clean profit after he paid off Waz, just for downloading some flight data and keeping an eye on the galactic warrants.

Every now and then, it would turn out some slave in the stables was worth far more than market value for some reason, so it paid to keep an eye out. Fortunately for Hugh, very few of his compatriots could be bothered to do that. Right now his diligence could pay off, but there was a problem. As with any sensitive data that needed transporting, Hugh had downloaded the flight info to a data pack. The only way one of those could be accessed was with a physical interface on a computer with an digital ID address at the chosen location for the pack to unlock.

"Shit shit shit" said Hugh after muting the mic.

Why the fuck had he downloaded the location to a data pack? He tried to remember at least the name of the system where Waz had marooned Creamy, but nothing was coming to mind. The system name wouldn't be enough anyway, and somewhere on a nice planet by a lake wasn't going to get him point three credits, let alone three million.

Data packs was how the captain of the Ophois always had sensitive data passed on, so Hugh took it for granted thats how everyone did it. As a glorified stock boy, Hugh didn't really have much experience with clandestine dealings. He'd just have to do his best.

"Ok, first off, thats lowballing to the worst degree. Goodness Three's boots were probably worth half a million on their own. Besides, the location is in a data pack coded for a nice neutral hotel I know in Alliance space. If you don't want to give me a real offer, I'll go there my self and drop the pack down the plug hole in the pool while drinking a big fuck-off cocktail to console my self, you hear?"

There was no replay and Hugh figured he'd fucked it by trying to play hardball. Then he spotted the pad was still muted.

"Ah fuck!" he said unmuting the pad and repeating his demand, hoping his embarrassment didn't show in his voice.

After pushing a small handful of toffee popcorn into her mouth, Willow slid the bowl to Maul and continued looking at Vasil's pad as if that helped her listen.

Seeing Vasil in full barter mode was always a show. She envisioned a young Vasil standing outside his house in front of a table full of toys. In her mind, little Vasil had a nice big house, all glass and white bricks on a planet with golden trees. He was wearing the sort of uniform Willow always imagined privet school boy would own, looking just as smart as he was shifty.

While little boys and girls selling their old toys was pretty common, she could see young Vasil explaining to a potential customer why this action figure was worth far more then his mom had paid for it because of some very legitimate reasons he had just made up.

In another life, Vasil would have made the prefect flee market trader selling what ever he had picked up cheap, from a big suit case using charm, confusing but entertaining patter and cheeky wit to draw in a crowd before the the local council inspector came around looking for trader licences.

Vasil started laughing before Hugh had finished the few last words of his sentence. “Okay, throw away an easy three plus the possibility of another three. I’d hoped this would be a quick, professional interaction, but I see I was mistaken.”

Vasil gambled that the Ophois was still at that last known location obtained from Oceane’s data dump, and with a few taps on the data slate, projected the location through the secure connection as a nav target.

“I did not want to bother the captain but I suppose we’ll deal with him directly. Unless you would care to reconsider.” Another tap on the slate started the reward rapidly decreasing by 50k per second. “It looks like you have about 60 seconds to decide.”

He muted the call. “Goddamn unprofessional...” he said, shaking his head, irritated to the point he could not finish his thought.

The information Hugh had was worth way more than was being offered, and Vasil was willing to pay more—if the negotiations had remained civil--but now it had become a matter of principal (and pride) to not be extorted.

Maul's eyebrows shot upwards as he tossed some popcorn into his mouth and scooted to the edge of his seat. The suspense was palpable. Over the years he'd seen many various negotiations occur and about a quarter of them ended in bloodshed. This was however the first time he'd seen someone respond to demands and threats in such a smooth way.

After filling his mouth with another handful of popcorn, he instinctually began to pass the bowl to Odin only to realize the mistake a few awkward moments after no one had taken the bowl from him. He shook his head and retracted the bowl, then passing it back to Willow.

Vasil Vasilescu“I did not want to bother the captain but I suppose we’ll deal with him directly. Unless you would care to reconsider.” Another tap on the slate started the reward rapidly decreasing by 50k per second. “It looks like you have about 60 seconds to decide.”

"Ok ok man. Shit fuck. What the hells wrong with you? No need to be like that. Pull it back some, ok?"

Yee, he'd fucked it. Going to Waz was unavoidable, but the captain getting wind of a little side hustle would stir more shit than Hugh could deal with. The captain didn't mind his crew making credits on the side, but he did mind when his crew didn't put a cut in the pot for the fleet. The guys made this sort of thing look easy, but it was another game when Hugh had to sort shit out himself, in secret.

"Look, be at Rankin Horizons in BD+74 526 tomorrow, ok? Book a room or whatever, and meet me at the pool after the restruant is done serving evening meals. Hard to hide weapons and shit in swimming shorts. Safer for everyone. .. and its still three million, you got it?"

Hugh ended the call. Not because it was some tactic to get his credits, it was in case he fucked it some more.
10 Dec 2024, 1:30pm
Vasil closed the connection and said dryly, "Some of us are still packing heat, even in swimming trunks. I hope that is not going to be a problem."

He focused the projected nav display on BD+74 526 and Rankin Horizons. Nothing suspicious stood out about the surface port. The hotel and restaurant were not on McKellan's Stellar Registry, or any other Imperial registry for luxury hotels. It looked like a typical, mediocre tourist spot for a cluster of systems.

"Not flashy, but also not seedy," he said. "Well, it looks like rooms and dinner are on me."
10 Dec 2024, 6:58pm
"Damn Vee!" ejected Willow some what surprised by Vasil's comment. "No more sugary treats for you"

Just because Vasil had some years under his belt, and looked like he was just as at home sipping wine as he was chuggin a beer, a man doesn't stop being a dude. She was used to it from a work crew, or even Maul, it was unexpected from Vee.

"Yeah, like whatever, but I'm not wearing a bathing suit. I'll stay at the restaurant while you guys like, go paddling with Agent X, okay?"

"Suit yourself, Willow. Or... don't bathing suit yourself in this case. You can keep watch if you like, though I doubt anything more dangerous than ill manners will need to be dealt with."

While had had the hotel details open, Vasil reserved rooms for everyone, and a table at the restaurant for the three of them. "We're all set. I might even be a nice guy and bring an unregistered credstick as payment rather than a traceable cred transfer. it depends on how he acts and the quality of the info we get."
12 Dec 2024, 9:35am
He quickly dumped whatever images of Willow in a bathing suit that his mind had conjured and turned his attention back to Vasil, who he then weirdly began to picture in the exact same bathing suit. Not sure he's got the legs for it.

"AHEM "

"Man, you handled that like a fuckin' pro, Vasil. Seems you and Lamb's sorta similar in that aspect. Must be something in that upiddy Imp blood that makes y'all so good at negotiations." Maul said jokingly as he stood from his seat with a stretch and audible grunt.

"But yeah, I'd keep that traceable cred thing in mind. If this dude gives us rotten info, at least we'd have a way of showing his boss that he turned rat. He did sound pretty desperate though so, meh. Just never can tell with these types." Shrugging, he then dusted the popcorn particles from his shirt and continued. "I'll see what I can do about discreetly gaining access to Rankin Horizons network once we're there. Might be able to find a guests list and with any luck this guy's room number and accompanying registered ship ID that he arrived in. Ya know, just to get some things in place in case he tries to pull a fast one on us or at the very least siphon some useful info."
12 Dec 2024, 11:20pm
"Talent and uppity blood still won't get me any more of her cake," said Vasil, powering off the slate. "Anyway, unless our friend is already on site, he won't be in a room before now, so that should cut down on the number of people he could be. I don't anticipate there being much of a problem, but it does not hurt to be prepared."

Vasil stood and picked up the slate. "I'll be leaving in a few hours and changing ships before heading to the meeting point. You're both welcome to come along, or I'll meet you there. Rooms are already reserved, so no rush."
