Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

His eyes narrowed on Willow's long black hair.

"Ah, so is that a wig? What do you actually look like?" He was joking of course, the smirk on his face said it all.

Maul wasn't truthfully all too worried about the bounty hunters. He didn't have a ship worth a damn for combat now that The Ghoul had been stolen or destroyed, that was another problem for another day, but Desumashin was fast and very capable of outrunning the bastards if the happened to stumble upon him.

"I'm game for Mars if y'all are. Ain't much more I can do from here besides throwing a few SE attacks out there and see if I can get some suckers on the Uni payroll to fall for an RS but even then..." There was no point continuing with the incomprehensible technobabble. "...Just sayin', the chances of a foot in the door on that front is kinda slim."

The book is The Count of Monte Cristo,” he told Willow, and spelled it just to be sure. “Definitely do not forget the first O or you’ll get a whole different genre of the book’s video adaptations.”

Vasil looked at the comm pad on his left bracer and began acknowledging several messages Jefferson had relayed concerning ERS and the Emerald Dawn. “It looks like we have a few ways forward. Hell, once the auction is over we could fly the ship to Mars and personally deliver it if we can’t figure out the password.”

Vasil chuckled and closed the connection with Jefferson. “How goddamn funny would it be if after all of this effort, it turns out the password was written down somewhere on the ship.” He paused, looking between Maul and Willow wondering if they were suddenly thinking the same as he. “I mean... it could not be that simple, could it?”

An opportunity!

"Er, well like, it's worth a look right?" I'll check any storage units and draws I can find.

Yeah, the passwords or phrase was important, but it was a great chance to find out how many other super soft blankets and pillows she could find. Willow didn't waist anytime rifling through the entire living quarters of the Honour Promise.
17 Aug 2024, 7:54pm
Finding a password was a long shot, but if there was one to be found, it would cut down on the work required to get into the COVAS. With Willow off conducting an inventory of all things plush on the ship, Vasil checked the most likely places to find a COVAS password reminder.

There was nothing in the obvious places such as right by the COVAS interface, or under the armrest of the pilot’s seat. Having piloted Saud Kreuger and Gutamaya ships, Vasil knew there were also less obvious places, many of which were marketed as luxury or convenience items.

Vasil sat in the pilot seat to check these last possible hiding places, basic ship settings. Engaging the HUD, Vasil began going through general settings not locked behind the COVAS. Nothing in a MOTD, or any set alarms or reminders. As far as he could tell, there weew no customized settings with any clues. In fact, the ship showed little customization not initiated by the COVAS or other on-board systems.

“Yeah, I didn’t think this would work.” Vasil sighed and looked around the bridge, giving voice to his frustrated thought, “Ninette, why don’t you just tell me the password?”
17 Aug 2024, 8:11pm
Maul watched as Willow walked away looking a little too excited to explore more of the ship. His eyes eventually settled back onto Vasil, who had departed shortly after. His gaze eventually fell to the floor as he began to go deep into thought. He had yet to take a stab at this passphrase and now knowing more of the meaning behind it, thoughts began to form on the matter. After putting the two of them into a coms call, he opened the line and began rattling off what was on his mind. Whether either of them paid any attention or not wasn't the purpose, he just felt the need to ramble a little.

"So I know from the previous translation attempts that 'rejeté' means something like 'reject' or 'rejected'. Maybe Goodness was once in a forbidden love, with him feeling like a prisoner because of his status. Maybe in love with a person beneath him." Then another thought occurred. "But he didn't design this thing, maybe the creator put this phrase into place. Maybe they're the one who feels like a prisoner?"

The palms of his hands rubbed and pushed hard against his closed eyelids as he continued to think out loud. "All this talk of love and feeling prisoner and shit. Like, what if the creator wasn't a nanny but like..." It felt odd to even think what he was going to say next. "...maybe an ex or something?" His eyes finally peeled open as he released them from their fleshy prison. The skin around them were red and irritated from the pressure he'd been putting on them. "I don't know though, I could be wrong. I mean, Why the hell would an ex still care about him though unless it was some sort of forbidden love thing?"

Maul threw his hands up in the air as sign of defeat and retreated to the sofa, resting his head on the arm and stretching out along the cushions with his laptop on his chest. If Willow saw that his boots were touching the material in such a barbaric manner, she'd likely cut his legs off.

"Fuck if I know. This whole arrangement is giving me weird vibes. Clearly whoever designed Ninette cares or at least cared deeply for Charles, Creamy, whatever, and worries about his safety."

"Whatever though, did y'all find anything? I was thinking of checking the bedrooms but...uh...I dunno, ya know?"
17 Aug 2024, 8:51pm
“Yeah, Maul, I can see that as a possibility,” said Vasil, still in the cockpit. “If the Ex is a hardcore Fed working for OVU maybe mom and dad did not approve, especially since mommy dearest is a courtier to Princess Aisling.”

It would not be the first time upper class Imperial parents interfered in affairs of the heart for one of their children. Particularly with the first born child. Being the youngest of six, Vasil never had to contend with interference, but it was made plain that his tendency toward unpedigreed women was frowned upon.

“It could also be a close friend that designed the COVAS, but given the wording of the phrase, I think you might be closer to the truth. Even rich playboys sometimes fall in love, I suppose.”

Hunting for password clues in the cockpit was leading nowhere. “Or maybe it is just some random-ass shit. Do you have any idea how many attempts we have to get it right, and if the number of attempts is reset if the COVAS is rebooted before the limit is reached?”

Like finding a password hint on the ship, a simple reboot to reset attempts might be a long shot, but would at least give some breathing room when guessing the password.

She'd found it, the mother load. Someone that took this much care of his environment, had to have clean throws and cushions somewhere, and he had so many in all the colors she could wish for. There was even sleeping bags made of the same super soft material, for zero G night on the ship. Willow could have wept with joy.

While she read the washing instructions, in case they needed specialist equipment to maintain their softness, Willow listed to Maul's musings on the covas.

"Well, if you like, think that" she yelled through the open door "then why are we wasting a week wating for second hand ship Junkers to come savage this work of art for parts?"

Willow was in a long room with a line of mirror fronted lockers on one wall where she had found the softness stash, and and long bench along the other. A panel of buttons on the edge of the low padded bench teased her curiosity. There were a few buttons with Open on them, marked 1 to 5. She was tempted to press the first one to see what happened.

"I mean, we are real confident its like, a care covas right? So lets just go and see who cares. it's like, maybe they'll be happy to see us" said Willow pressing the button for scientific enquiry.

The padded top of the bench slowly opened letting 4 mico-drones free. Willow jumped back out the room and called for help "Shit, SHIT. MAUUL!"

No drones chased her as she backed away, but a little more light spilled out of the long mirrored room. Gathering her courage, Willow peeked back in. A long multileveled rack had unfolded from inside bench, loaded with at least 15 pairs of large, men's shoes. The drones aimed their lights at any pairs of shoes they detected Willow looking at.

She HAD TO have this ship.
17 Aug 2024, 9:16pm
Maul's mag boots barely held as he came to such a sudden stop in the doorway. The last thing he expected to see was Willow staring at a bunch of shoes with micro drones flying about. A simple "Huh." was all he could muster at the sight.

"I'm not sure any these are your size." He said with a smirk as he joined Willow. "Not exactly how I'd spend my creds but you gotta respect the man's taste in luxury."

Just then he'd realized he'd never answered Vasil's question about the passphrase attempts. Willow's shouts of despair were a bit distracting, so much so that he half expected to see Vasil come running through the door any second himself.

"It didn't say how many attempts we'd get. I feared just the one but it may be the typical 3 to 5 before it locks down or worse. If it is just the one, I didn't rightfully feel comfortable spending the one attempt without y'all's input, ya know?"

Vasil did not know what to expect when he arrived but it was definitely not Willow and Maul perusing a shoe display.

“Really? Thought you might be getting murdered down here. Never thought you’d be someone to get excited over shoes.”

Vasil looked at the micro drones, moving around silently and their little lights artfully highlighting the shoe collection. It was luxury like this that reinforced the stereotypical image of Imperials being concerned only with extravagance. Stereotypes existed for the reason that they reflected some small amount of truth, but this for some reason irritated the hell out of Vasil.

“Useless crap,” he growled. “Like he can’t be bothered to turn on a damn light, or have the nanny do it for him. They probably put the shoes on and tie them, for him, too.”

True, it was no different than having a slave do the same thing. Most people would argue it was better to have machine assistants; less demeaning and exploitative. For Vasil this was one of those blatant displays of wealth that, in spite of him being Imperial, he found excessive.
17 Aug 2024, 10:27pm
"Yeah ,like I get what your saying Vee, but I can see me owning a shoe collection if I had shit like this to put them in"

The button had changed to display Close 1, so Willow pressed it, and the racks, quickly and neatly folded away. The drones landed back in their charging ports, and the top of the bench hid its leather cargo once again.

Willow was trying to work out if her knee-highs would fit in the unit, so she gave herself a little shake to keep her mind on the job.

"Anyway Vee, you could call on your inner posh guy when you take your son.. " She said looking at Maul.

Ok, maybe not. Maul looked like he'd be through some shit, and although Vasil could maybe old enough to be Mauls dad, it just didn't look real.

"Ok like, scratch that. Your Imperial bearing will be great when you turn up on campus without an appointment to see if their particle physics department is a good fit for your niece right? I mean, they may buy that if someone like you disses the Imperial Science Academy"

She felt like she better clear up any doubts they may have on her ability to pull off the particle physics claim.

"Er, so thanks to my time reding scanners of all sorts, I'm pretty good with the science behind them. I can play the part. Like, should we need to at all"
18 Aug 2024, 12:20am
“You’re probably right, Willow. Maybe we should just show up and see who would be willing to help.” He realized the many plans and counter-plans rolling through his mind in order to get info on the COVAS began to grow overly complicated and more of a hinderance than a help.

He looked to Maul. “And if you are right about an ex that cares about Goodness, odds are they’d help with the COVAS once everything was explained.”

“Yeah...”Vasil nodded, reminded that sometimes the simple ideas are the best. “Alright, so I guess we are going to Mars. If there is a way to inject a message or something in the data Ninette sends, maybe we should say that we are coming for a visit.”

He affected a posh and smugly superior Imperial accent. “Even if they are only Federals that is no excuse for being rude and just showing up unannounced. Decorum must be maintained, you know.”
18 Aug 2024, 1:06am
"Ya know, before Willow shouted and scared the absolute shit out of us, I was looking into some quotes from this ancient ass book and well, I skimmed a few but one stuck out to me for whatever reason." He reached into his jacket pocket for his slate where he had written it down for later reference, not because it may be the answer for Ninette's passphrase but more so for some of his own troubles.

"'There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel, that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living.

Live, then, and be happy, beloved children of my heart, and never forget that until the day when God shall deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is summed up in these two words,—‘Wait and hope.’
"

He pocketed the slate again, this time, when pulling his hand back out, he had a silver tube in is grasp that stored his half smoked cigarette. Looking at it as he rolled it back and forth between his fingers he continued. "Maybe we input that, ya know? 'Wait and Hope'. Even if its the wrong answer, maybe it'll peak the creators interest and let them know that we're coming."
18 Aug 2024, 2:52am
Vasil nodded immediately in agreement with Maul rather than take the time to consider outcomes and possible courses of action. “Sounds like a plan. I can expedite flight clearances for Mars using ERS by justifying it as related to charity business.” That was not too far from the truth since expenses for finding Creamy were being channeled through the ERS operating budget.

“As much as I hate to say it, we should probably leave Ninette in place and take this flying shag pad to Mars. Willow, do you know anyone in station management that might be willing to release the ship for past due storage fees and maybe a little ‘administrative fee’ for their help?”

Vasil took a breath, surveyed the dressing room, and let out the breath with an annoyed-sounding huff. “I have no idea how to expense this. The last thing ERS needs is a damn nookie yacht.”
18 Aug 2024, 8:00am
"Err" grunted Willow checking her account.

Her trip to the rim to drop off the woman that shot her through the hand, had the side effect of being worth a lot of credits to the cartographers. As Willow was used to living between jobs, she hadn't spent much of what she earned after buying a ship, some dream equipment for her work shop, and paying a retainer to a mercenary crew, to kill the people that captured Willow should they fuck with her again.

Chances were Citi Gateway would just look up the worth of the ship according to their data, and chose a starting price for the Honour Promise from their. As long as they didn't send an agent to look inside, it would be a good price. Even with that fat discount, Willow still needed to see if she could spring for an A-Grade, pre-build Orca.

Her savings account was still up where it should be, but this ship was going to put a real deep dent in it.

"Yeah, so I'll just need to do an inventory of the cargo bay and synthetiser storage, coz like, thats the stuff Citi can check easy, right? Then I can maybe hurry something along, okay?"

"So like, give me a day coz I'm going to want to pack in case we're out for a while, Yeah? You guys good with that?"
18 Aug 2024, 2:29pm
“Sounds good to me. Should probably disconnect Ninette after the first password attempt and before talking to station management. The ship not having a COVAS and not having a full operating suite should reduce the price.”

Vasil, still trying to think of a way to expense such a large purchase for what he considered a useless ship, did not pick up on Willow crunching numbers as well, or that she was interested in snagging the shag pad for herself. “Pilot Federation regulations won’t allow the ship to leave the station without a COVAS so I’ll go pick up a generic one. We can always re-install Ninette later.”

“I’m going to head back to the Always Lost. If either of you need anything from me, let me know.”
