Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Yeah, he is the last point of contact for Goodness, but like, do you want to poke a guy that's already pissed off? Like, what do we have to offer the guy? I mean, I'm good at repairs, but a whole carrier is a bit much, you know?" Said Willow between bites of a ready meal.

"Hey so, if were talking about last point of contact, what about this covas? Like, I don't think its normal for a covas to upload you know? I mean yeah, the Pilots Fed takes every byte of data every time you dock, or hit a nav beacon, but they don't throw data off to some backwater system, am I right?"

"So if Hooder and Goodness got in the Knight, then the Knight's covas is a last point of contact too, you know?"

“Good point, Willow. Depending on how old it is and the log overwrite settings, the COVAS might contain one of the first jumps it made, or one of the first call home transmissions if it did that when first powered up on the ship. That might help narrow down where it was programmed, and maybe who did it. Hell, Maul, don’t you hacker types enjoy leaving little hidden calling cards in your programming? Maybe the programmer did something similar.”

A scan notice appeared on the cockpit HUD. A system patrol had initiated it, suspicious as to why the Always Lost was maintaining position just outside the exclusion zone of Koontz Port. “The knight also has to have a system of registry where it was built,” said Vasil, reminded that the information was often buried deep in scan data, at least for legally registered ships. “I would say it was built in Cubeo since it was commissioned by EoM, but Faulcon deLacy does not have any shipyards in system.”
30 Jul 2024, 12:03am
“I have some other methods I could try to use to access the logs but whoever worked on this COVAS knows their shit, it’s like navigating a minefield. One false step and the whole thing will go to hell and all that data will be gone. If this upload trail leads to its creator, maybe I can get some insight on them and learn something that’ll help.”

Maul had made his way back to the cockpit while discussing things with Vasil and Willow and was now sitting in the pilots seat flipping through the empty nav panel, thinking over all the leads Willow had uncovered.

“Wait, his ship. It’s a long shot but System Nav beacons pick up traffic data and store it for a good while. Only really deleting the oldest first after a good long while or if the storage gets near full. If he were in these systems, Everate, Inara, we could program a hacking limpet and attach it to one of the navs and see if his ship pops up. I’ve got a way of tricking the nav’s into thinking the ship receiving the data is a system security ship, which gives better detailed readouts on the ships that get pinged by the nav, maybe even the system it was manufactured in.”

“Willow you probably remember me doing this when we first met, this is how we tracked down that ship before.”
02 Aug 2024, 9:21pm
"Yeah, I remember that day Maul. For me, that's day is kind of vivid, you know?"

Dropping her spork, Willow flexed her hand remembering the hole that had been put there to prove a pointless point. Forcing her fists into the bench, Willow stopped her self from remembering those days, and all the feelings that went along with it. She turned off the the mic for a moment to repeat a mantra until she was out of that head space.

"Ok so, that's going to take time and be like, real dull, so I think Vee and me'll go look into the Knight of Goodness and maybe talk to some people that knew him"

"I mean, tracking down the ships origins won't be hard because it was a charitable donation, so its got to be trackable. Where do you to start Vee?
03 Aug 2024, 2:27am
“Where to start is a damn good question, Willow. You said he was on Citi, so we might as well start locally with anyone that may have had contact with him.”

Another test scan of a passing cargo ship got him thinking. “You know, it’s likely he has other ships as well. It might be worth a records search to see what ships are registered to him and any of his known aliases, and if there are records of them being stored, impounded, sold, scrapped, or reported missing since he disappeared.”

“Maul, you said the COVAS was asking something in French. What was it? Maybe someone we talk to might have a clue as to the reply it might want.”

I'd decided to just say nothing in regards to the bartender or the news report, just walking right back to the ship... albeit not at a quick pace, because neither of us were going anywhere, and I would manage a fast walk or jog at best, at great effort. Especially in the near-absence of gravity in the docking bay, where my body's extra mass did little more than add inertia, without helping movement.

Once in the hangar, I went to the front entrance of the ship - my usual ride in the form of a Phantom, of course - stopping in front of the little elevator to that airlock. There I pulled off the hood and disabled the holo-disguise, revealing my big form. Not like it was necessary to keep it on, here, at this point. Nobody to stare but that two and a half meter giant I was 'dragging' along.

"I, assume, you already have access to it.", I said, gesturing behind myself with the left arm. "If this entrance isn't good, just go in through the back airlock. If... you don't, need any help. Either way, need to go in, separately."

With that, I stepped on the small lift, which was just barely wide enough to fit the width of my hips, and made it go up. I sent it back down once I was off it, out of courtesy, but somehow I had a feeling that that particular entry way to the ship had not been designed for a person taller than basically anybody else that existed. I'd still wait nearby - and inside - to see if she was going to attempt that challenge, or not. And in case I had to pull a bit to help things through that airlock.
10 Aug 2024, 5:21pm
"Yeah, that's better," I couldn't help but grin widely when Kasumi's hologram shut down, revealing her true shape. Then, the lift took her upwards to the airlock and returned for me.

The access panel accepted my reissued ID card without any problems since it was a legal copy given to me by Aegis along with the other 'new life starter pack' stuff, yet the lift itself was a bit of a delay. Thankfully, the changing booth experience taught me how to slip inside those cramped compact spaces, but it took me a good while of turning, squeezing and grumping to actually press the button and send the thing up. Thankfully, it was a low-gravity area.

If we were in a cartoon, then the moment when I finally got through the inner airlock door should've been accompanied by a plop. So, rolling my shoulders and neck was the first thing I did once I was in the cockpit of Kasumi's Phantom, and everything there was almost the same as I remembered. Except for the pilot herself whose snow white skin contrasted brightly against the mostly black-coloured interior. At least the parts that weren't covered, namely the arms and the lower half of the face. And her personal throne, obviously, the pilot seat.

"Uhh... Yeah. Here I am."

"So, then ..."

I turned my attention to the currently inactive holo-projector, near the radar and status displays, slightly off to the right.

"EDI, show her."

"Are you sure that - "

"Yes. If I can't trust my friends, then who can I?"

Two different feeds lit up, one showing the recovered data from Jana's ship, the other what I took from the Azimuth outposts. I knew the question was not about the data, but that I had a slightly illegal artificial construct in my possession, and my assumption that revealing its existence was safe here. Turning around to Ina, I started talking.

"The full data's on display there, if you want to have a look." I pointed at the projector. "But basically, I caught wind of a distress signal from her, and some local news around one of those stupid Titans said she was missing. So I went looking and found her ship, dead. Disabled, not destroyed. Of course, it was Azimuth, and their stupid Black Flight idiots, who kidnapped her. Not some fabricated Thargoids took her bullshit, camera feeds caught one of those black ships and other people on the ship talking about wiping the data to make it look like it wasn't them. That other data, I took from those places I decided to run to the ground because I was - am - pissed, and decided to give them a sign that trying to use someone close to me as bait only gets you a middle finger."

I took a deep breath, to try and steady out a little, feeling my muscles become twitchy at the subject. The fact that I balled both hands into fists for a moment probably gave away that it wasn't very successful, nevermind that said muscle behavior was quite visible on the arms.

"It is encrypted, so might not yet all be readable." I glanced behind myself. "Or has that changed, EDI?"

"No. I am still working on it."

I turned my head back to the front. "Honestly, haven't even looked at what it all is, I just found logs about an 'asset' and a Black Flight ship passing through the system around the same time she went missing. Maybe... three days ago. I assume you know who those idiots are?"

I sighed.

"And as if that wasn't enough, now I have to deal with that idiotic Titan shit again, just after getting back to space where there's people around."

Following my little monologue of exposure, I moved to my pilot's seat - probably, more like a throne dedicated to my excessively sized backside - and theatrically dropped into it, leaning back, which probably caused quite a noticeable wobble in those two 'expanded' areas, but it didn't really provide me with any pleasure. I was both in a really shitty mood and just done with the world, right about now.
10 Aug 2024, 6:20pm
"EDI?..." I raised an eyebrow surprisedly but then a stream of information took all my attention and I came closer to the holo-projector. Everything added up to the recent network article from Azimuth that I read and formed a picture that really didn't ask for any further clarifications: Azimuth at its finest, people in fancy classy suits in front of cameras and shadow ops teams doing dirty jobs in the background. Another reason to think that they might've been sharing experience with Delaine goons.

"Cocksuckers," I stated in a cold tone, then adding a pause to let that description linger in the air for a bit longer.

"...also, not surprised to see you having a modified COVAS thing. Fits your style," I stepped back from the projector and, once again, for the lack of the better option, sat on the floor cross-legged. Though, as another pause showed, that wasn't the best time to start any small talks, and I returned to the topic that brought me here.

"We need to get her out of whatever place they're keeping her in, period. Nothing good comes from Azimuth. And the best time to do it is now. I should send a message to my camp, Azimuth are valid targets and should be dealt with accordingly."

"Why the fuck it had to happen right now...", I added in a more quiet and a more annoyed tone. "I just can't be in two places at the same time."
10 Aug 2024, 9:50pm
I shook my head, then looked at her.

"No, no. Not a good idea. Can't even go there now, don't know where it is yet."

Remaining quiet for a moment, I organized the loose thoughts about my planned approach into something slightly presentable.

"I want to go in there quietly, at first. Fool them into thinking we're Azimuth, or... something, like that. With a cargo full of... 'escape pods'. Except they're not going to contain people, just explosives. And lots of them. Set off that bomb, get a distraction, and start looking. Anything that shoots back gets shot at. And anything else that's in the way, honestly."

I audibly breathed, slowly, through my nose.

"Need to get something that fools Azimuth, first. Can... probably, only get it from them, one of their ships. Then... I don't know. Just get the 'cargo', and go there."

I couldn't figure anything better, and paused again.

"Nothing in the data says this was planned around this time. So I'm just going to say they have a really shitty sense of timing. And, I think they want to use her as bait, but don't understand how I am going to react to this. But it would be a lot easier to get to their base or whatever, without getting shot at by turrets, and I don't want them moving her away before we get to her."
10 Aug 2024, 10:11pm
"Hm. Hmmmm...", I let those sounds go along with my thinking process. "I thought you've gathered the data you need already, but yeah. If you don't know where it even is..."

I didn't finish the sentence since I thought that the beginning of it was self-explanatory already: there are lots of Azimuth places and as much as I wanted to turn everything and everyone there inside out, that's not how hostage rescue operations are being done.

"Also, I highly doubt it's possible now to conceal my identity, not after those news folks got to our camp. Maybe I should go separately. If you need a distraction... I'd say, I can make them worry about the ways they're going to die."

"As for 'what do they need'...," I shrugged and spread my arms not knowing any exact answers. "You, I guess. Maybe something from you. Or you as 'you'. Or maybe even some part of your body. I remember they tried to stop us when we pulled you out of Hadad's belly, even if they knew you were unconscious. Or that you might not have even been alive at that moment."

"That's friggin Azimuth. Pffft," chuckling ironically, I dismissively waved my hand. "Sometimes they act like it's a cheap mafia novel. I won't be surprised if I get to know they exchange experience or operatives with those Delaine's morons."
10 Aug 2024, 10:24pm
“I have the data. But, if you’d listened, you would have heard that it is encrypted, because of course those idiot fucks don’t want some random guy wandering in on their dirty shit.”

I exhaled through the nose, eyes closed. It didn’t serve to get upset already… was not her fault this shitty bullcrap even existed.

“And of course they want me, or, whatever is in my body. Stupid idiots and their obsession with Thargoids. Only got us war, and …” I looked at the exposed test subject marking on the right wrist, or the remnants thereof. “Mentally scarred people. But when we’re done, they won’t have me or their ‘bait’.”

I rolled my eyes at the last word, finding it idiotic that such a problem or situation could still arise even in the 34th century. But as long as humans existed, so would idiots and morons within the species.

“I… don’t remember you telling me you pulled me out of a Titan. Can’t even remember if Aegis told me.” I just shrugged, in a ‘Don’t really care’ way. Was not important anyway, especially in context. A thought suddenly occurred to me, for which I raised an eyebrow.

“So, what if, we just… smuggle you into there, somehow? I guess, you ride along on my ship and wait on it until I give you the signal. Or you see it from those explosives lighting up, at that point we’ll just want to shoot our way through those bastards anyway. Or, at least, I want to. Only getting into it should be quiet.”
10 Aug 2024, 10:43pm
I could've said more but something kept telling me she wasn't exactly in the mood to listen, so I limited my reply to the matters at hand only.

"Hm. Why not? I could go in one of those escape pods. Not quite a comfy ride since I have to go with all my gear being on me already, but I think there's enough space. But there's another thing..."

Instinctively, I scowled, remembering those days.

"...Not leaving Marshmallow here, in Inara. Last time I tried, Delaine's goons set up an ambush. They're all on some godforsaken ball of ice now, and have been laying there with holes in their heads for three years, yet I could totally do without repeating that experience."
10 Aug 2024, 11:09pm
"So, take it with you, on my carrier.", I suggested. "This, base, facility... whatever, is probably not going to be, in the Bubble. And it'd be faster to take it than fly there manually."

We could always figure out who went with what once we were close... something made me look her over. Even sitting down, on the floor, that stupidly tall woman was at head height with me... or would have been, were it not for the big cushion on my lower half lifting me a fair bit higher in a seated position, especially in low gravity, where it barely compressed and spread to the sides.

"... are, you sure, that you would really fit into an escape pod? Not sure the standard size is designed, for... well ..." I stretched my arm toward her. "That."

"Besides, they'd probably see you through its window, and I don't think we want them catching on before we're right in the middle of their little operation. Though I have a feeling it's not going to be a small one. And if you're wondering what kind of explosives I'm thinking of... mining charges. Those things blow an asteroid to pieces, a hundred, or so, tons of that... would put a big hole into any building they've got over there, and give us a window to start looking while their security forces are scrambled and looking at the explosion."

Of course, we first needed to know where it was at, and I hoped that EDI would get us something out of it soon. In the meantime, we had the finer details of a plan to figure out... and prepare some of it before going over to the - soon-to-not-be - super secret Azimuth place.
11 Aug 2024, 4:30am
"They could also spot explosives through the window, unless you, you know...", and I waved my finger in the air slightly in the gesture that clearly meant inserting something up the rectum of a human. "...stuff dead bodies with them. Which might be funny by itself, but, kind of, lowers the resulting capacity."

Imagining the face of some Azimuth wannabe scientist suddenly discovering that surprise with an old-school ticking timer on it made my lips stretch in a wacky grin for a brief moment. Maybe I could pull that prank on them later by myself, using the next batch of their cretin operatives as a wrapper for the gift. They seemingly still enjoyed an almost limitless recruitment pool anyways.

"And you can put me into a cargo container, whatever business they're running there, much likely receives those with cargo ships too," I returned to being a little more serious. "Life support... It's, kind of, optional in my case. Just don't forget not to seal the lock, so that I could get outside on my own."

"Not that I'm a fan of cargo box claustrophobia parties," I sceptically narrowed my eyes and spoke that part slowly. "Yet I still think this might be one of the best ways to get me inside undetected, if that's what you want. I've never been a covert operations specialist, you know."
