Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vasil, momentarily stunned by the exuberance and highly detailed order could do nothing but wait until it was his turn. "Uh... I'll have the Mystery Meatloaf," --he could not resist trying a menu item with that name-- "with a side of cheesy mac and green beans." He downed what was left of his beer, setting the glass on the table. "And another beer."

Feeling oddly embarrassed that such a waifish girl was putting him to shame in the food department, he said to Willow. "I had a really big lunch. Epic, even. Well, at least it was lunch where I was at the time. Been bouncing around so much that I have no idea what the local station time is."

"And stop that," he said, indicating the tip flick. "When it is my treat, it's my treat 100%."

The beer and Willows juice arrived. Vasil took up his beer, stood and indicated one of the tables. "I suppose we should grab one before it gets too busy. All that food is not going to fir on the bar. Sounds like what you need are regular clients" he said on the way to the table. "Maybe some steady repair or maintenance contracts to provide predictable income. Any walk-in business is then icing since you don't have to rely on it."

Picking up her board, Willow followed Vasil to a table chatting as they walked.

"Yeah, but you have like, this vision, you know? I was gonna be fixing things form places I didn't know were there, and stuff like that. But that's not what it is, you know? Not here any way"

Rolling her board under the table, Willow sat and bent her straw to the perfect drinking degree.

"It's only been a few days so far, right? And anyway, I got like, a buffer zone to work with, and that'll give me time to figure out what I need to do for the shop, you know? And hey, I can always jump in my ship and get enough creds to bail me out in like, a day if I need"

"Anyway, talking work, like, what's this job so good, its creamy?"

Maul had gotten distracted on his way to the bar and found himself in some trouble with a couple of thugs inside a gambling den that was tucked away near the warehouse section of the docks. He'd popped in to score a few extra creds before heading to The Galactic but after a few losses, a few minutes of yelling, and one busted nose later, Maul now found himself sitting outside the warehouse, smiling a bloody smile behind a thin cloud of smoke from a cigarette.

"Cha-ching." he said, fanning out a handful of credit chips he'd managed to swipe from the thugs, along with the cigarette he had in his mouth.

Just then his slate rumbled in his pocket.

Mr. Montresor,
As you probably know, my discussions with Lady Lambast did not end well, with her abandoning her plans for building a space port and finding Charles “Creamy” Goodness. However, as a favor to the Count and Countess my family will be assuming the responsibility of finding their son. I assume Lady Lambast passed your name on to the Count and Countess who then passed it on to us. I am still in possession of the COVAS, and if you are interested in finding the lost Lord, your assistance would be welcomed.
I will be in the Inara system but can meet you at a time and place convenient for you if you would care to discuss things further.

Hey Vasil,
Sorry, about the delay, was a bit busy. Funny enough, I too am in Inara, was settling up some business. I'm near the docks now, holler back at me whenever you're good and we can meet and discuss this COVAS sitch.

Vasil arched a brow, then realized what she meant by a creamy job. "Oh, well, the job is to actually find someone named... Creamy Goodness." It was obvious that Vasil had an issue with actually saying the name. His real name is Lord Charles Goodness, but he goes by the name of Creamy."

"His daddy is a Brigadier and mother is a courtier. Real Imperial blueblood types, so I suppose his chosen Nome de Guerre is a bit of an embarrassment." The irony did not escape Vasil that the Vasilescus were one of the oldest Imperial families, going all the way back to the founding of the Empire. True, they did not enjoy the status or recognition they once had, but his sister, Octavia, was changing that.

"The very short version is that he's been missing for a year and there is this unique COVAS that might have clues to his whereabouts. I've sent word to someone who might be of help with the COVAS but have not heard anything yet. In addition to your engineering and recovery skills, your others might come in handy if he happens to be less than living." Vasil drew a Y on his chest, knowing Willow would understand the meaning.

The comm in his mav suit beeped. Vasil checked the message. "Speak of the devil, that is him now." Vasil tapped the comm badge on the collar of his suit. "Jefferson, record message: Meet me at the Grill Shack. Unit 5, B section in the pilot's market. Here with a kick-ass engineer who can help. Send message, close channel."

It took me a while to find my favorite spot aroound these parts again. And I, probably, was blind, because I'd managed to walk past it twice, almost exactly opposite of whatever that meat grill place was. Perhaps a bit of an odd spot for my preferred establishment, at least here in the docks, for when I didn't feel bothered to go up into the hab ring... but then again, it was unlikely Italian foods would really pose much competition to anything that specialized in meat of various kinds, sizes and shapes.

Would maybe pay that other one a visit some day, because I did like a good steak myself, every once in a while. Just not right now, when that woman was together with the Imperial guy, and I kind of had my sixth sense telling me it wasn't a simple meeting between friends, or acquaintances. They hadn't noticed me out here, either, so I didn't see an issue to leave it be... or maybe I was just out of social practice after more than a year and a half of not really doing the 'people' thing much, thanks to a certain Thargoid problem.

But just barging in would look a little too much like a coincidence to be believable, even if it was. And it just wasn't a thing that you just did... or, at least, I didn#t, unless given a good reason to... which, here, there wasn't.

I figured it better to leave things for another time and, after glancing that way another time, walked to the entrance of the... wasn't quite a restaurant, more like a cozy café, of sorts. And began to study the menu, because the mess that was my memory had forgotten that as well. Also really wished I wasn't wandering around alone, it just felt weird sometimes. Or more than sometimes.

Vasil Vasilescu"Jefferson, record message: Meet me at the Grill Shack. Unit 5, B section in the pilot's market. Here with a kick-ass engineer who can help. Send message, close channel."

The bacon wedges were disappearing into Willows mount one at a time, with a respectful time to chew in between. The more Vasil explained, the more interested Willow became. The shop thing was a project she could get into, but this was real work that could involve everything she was good at.

"A special covas huh? Okay yeah, I'm interested. And hey, I guess its an toff thing, so there is going to be steep wedge for results? Like, gotta be a payday if you are building a team for this gig, yeah?"

She knew she was pretty good at finding lost things, but if this guy had been missing for over a year, then the trail was cryo-cold and the guy was corps. But hey, they had a covas, so some one at least knew where his ship was at some point, so maybe she could at least find that.

Vasil had given some thought to compensation. Though he was doing this as part of an exchange of favors between the Vasilecu and Goodness families he knew the time and effort of others was not free. He’d already determined the money would come from a combination of ERS and personal funds.

“I won’t bullshit you, Willow. I’m involved with this as part of a favor, but there is a sliding pay scale for others involved. Ten mil each just for finding where he is and what happened to him, with two of that up front. Twenty each if a body is recovered and returned to the family. One hundred each if he is returned alive.” Vasil took a bite from a bacon wedge before it too disappeared. “The COVAS might need to be returned, but otherwise there is no restriction on keeping recovered salvage."
20 Jul 2024, 6:10pm
Leaving about half the wedges was hard with their order cooking on the grill a few feet away, but Willow contented herself with the Vega Red and listened to the proposal. The numbers were big, but the reality of the job made them hard to earn.

"Yeah, I mean, that sounds good when you say it, but this job could like, stretch, you know? So yeah, I'd have to pull few jobs off the board, and I'd be jumping around for a few days, but I could pick up scratch like that. A guy that's been missing for like, a year is going to be deep in cold case city, right? And that's like, a lot of leg work snooping around that town"

"So ok, say we find him and he's passed on, then we'd still have to have tracked him down with in a few days to be worth the pay. So, the only way we earn stacks, is if this dude has done a cruddy job of faking his death, and like, we find him soaking rays on a paradise planet, you know?"

For Vasil, she'd do it because he asked, he was a nice guy, but he liked to play hard ball on deals. Anyway the food wasn't even here yet, so game on my guy, time had to be passed.

“I had a big lunch, so don’t leave spuds on the plate on my account,” he said, indicating the bacon wedges.

“And, yeah, I know it may take a while and the payouts are at best moderate for the effort involved, so I have something that might help. As you know, ERS is not just relocating refugees from the war, we are also helping rebuild damaged stations and settlements. We get advanced notice of abandoned settlements to be targeted for reactivation. Since they are abandoned and the Thargoids have been cleared out, whatever is on the ground prior to the arrival of the construction teams is fair game.”

Vasil downed a swallow of beer. Willow was smart and he had no doubt she understood that he was offering her information on possible salvage that few people knew about. “I’ve already added you to our recovery feed as an ERS engineering consultant contractor. Sometime in the next week you should start seeing pre construction notices. As an engineering consultant, I guess you might want to sometimes get a ground-level look at what needs to be cleared out before the teams arrive.”
20 Jul 2024, 7:42pm
3 wedges didn't hear the end of the offer Vasil made, and Willow slid down her chair.

"Oh now you've gone and like, spoiled the game Vee"

She folded her arms and pretended to sulk, but took another wedge to console her self.

"Okay, that's pretty sweet. But, like, time is money you know? And like you don't want to pay unless there's results, and I don't want to work unless my time is paid for, so.."

Willow lost where she was going because the grill cook was stacking up her burger. She watched it undergo skilled construction, not realising she was licking her lips till the waxy taste of lip gloss told her.

"Er, so yeah. There's that" Nothing she had said came to any sort of conclusion. "So, add my mom and dads company to that list, Thorn Reclamations operating out of Calhuacan, and I may just think about it" she said pretending like she wasn't going to take the job anyway.

Willow cracked her knuckles, the first plates were on their way.
20 Jul 2024, 8:43pm
“Okay, that can be arranged,” he said after some thought. “But only because it’s obvious that you are a growing young Willow in dire need of sustenance to maintain your hummingbird-like metabolism and probably ate your parents out of house and home.”

His mystery meatloaf arrived along with the first of Willow’s plates. Vasil cut off a bit with his fork and took a bite. It was likely all synthetic meat, but that did not matter. It was simple and tasted great, just as any comfort food should. “Wow... this is better than I thought it would be.”

After a few bites, he set the fork down. “If you are going to get invloved in this little venture, I owe it to you to explain a little background and how I managed to get ahold of the COVAS.”
20 Jul 2024, 9:07pm
"Woah there captain, cut those afterburners. I'm going to need a bit more than tech info on salvaged gear"

Willows delicate fingers took apart the triple stack and rebuilt three burgers using her dipping bread as buns, filling them with the onion rings and crispy mushrooms. The Stack was a great burger, but Willow needed to work it down so she could deal with it.

"So yeah, the loaf is ok. I mean, the herbs and spices would like, make boiled boots taste great, but this is the reason you come to the Grill Shack" she said pointing with both hands at her completed holy trinity of burger.

Picking up the first burger, Willow set about gnawing at it. She looked like a squirrel dealing with a nut, turning her food slowly as she endlessly nibbled at the ever decreasing edges.

"Anyway, I want know who else is coming, and like, do some homework on the guy, you know? Knowing who this Charlie is, will help us walk in his footstep.. if he left any"
20 Jul 2024, 9:38pm
Approaching the Grill Shack and its accompanying smells made Maul's stomach squeal in excitement. He entered the Shack and stood in the doorway as he rubbed at his bruised nose and looked around for Vasil.

"Ah fuck." he muttered to himself at the sight of Willow sitting across from Vasil. This must have been the "kick-ass engineer" he'd brought up in his last message. After their recent spat, Maul was likely the last person Willow would want to see. He considered turning around and leaving at that moment, no one would have been the wiser, but his subconscious and morals must have co-conspired against him, because he was now approaching their table.

"Mr. Vasilescu." said Maul, with a slight bow of his head, interrupting what looked to be a delicious and friendly meal between the two.

He turned to Willow and gave her the same respect he showed Vasil, bowing slightly longer this time with a very little eye contact.

"Thorn."
20 Jul 2024, 9:54pm
“I probably could not eat half of that on my best day,” Vasil said of the one woman feast laid out before Willow. “Anyway, about Creamy--I mean Charle. He is essentially one of those rich family pretty boy thrill seeking types who gets by mostly on his looks and charm. Though, I hear he is damn good at hand-to-hand combat. Shortly before he disappeared, he got involved with some raiders. Not the bottom scraping type that hang out at nav beacons looking to score a few tons of cargo, but the big-boy types that operate a fleet of carriers.

“One of these raiders had possession of the COVAS and--” Vasil paused when Maul approached, then looked between Maul and Willow. “Wait, you two already know each other? Great! Have a seat, food’s on me.”
20 Jul 2024, 9:59pm
That over there definitely wasn't a friendly lunch meeting. Or, at least, not just, so I made the executive decision for myself not to get involved, and just enjoy some food on my own, going inside the restaurant opposite the meat grill, now that I'd reminded myself about what it offered.

Probably for the better, anyway. I doubted a stranger was what those three wanted in on things.
