Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Yeah, I know him, or like, the back of him" Said Willow looking up at the de-mohawk man.

In proper light with better quality eyes in his head, the dude didn't look quit so, carrion feeder, as he did first time Willow met him. He looked kind of scary back then. Carrion feeder was a fair comparison as he usually used the name Ghoul or something like that. A name Willow had levelled at her, thanks to the profession she wished she could make a go of.

"But I guess if you got a computer that needs cracking, you could do worse. Kinda used the guy for that my self." said Willow nicely distracted by the burgers that needed eating

How did Vee, know Gee?

"Hey Vee, did you get this guy off The Network?" she asked Vasil before rounding on Maul.

"Like, If your getting Network points, I want Network points. Sort it, sponsor. Like, pronto"
20 Jul 2024, 10:18pm
“Network?” asked Vasil, confused. “No, we’ve met before, but his name was given to me by the Countess Goodness. Like I said, there is a lot going on in the background with regards to finding the missing Little Lord Pompadour.”

The interaction between Willow and Maul made it obvious to Vasil that there was some bad blood. But they were not whipping out knives or anything. At least not yet.

“So... why don’t we all just have a seat and discuss the business at hand.”

Willow Thorn

"Hey Vee, did you get this guy off The Network?" she asked Vasil before rounding on Maul.

"Like, If your getting Network points, I want Network points. Sort it, sponsor. Like, pronto"

His eyes shot directly at Willow now, no longer avoiding eye contact.

"That's not how it—" he stopped and shook his to wrap his mind around Willow just openly talking about The Network, but the cat was already out of the bag.

"No, Willow, this has nothing to do with that." He said calmly as he took a seat at the table, glancing at Vasil briefly before looking back at Willow and continuing. "Let's not talk publicly about stuff we don't fully understand, yeah?"

Whether Vasil or his family had ever utilized any of The Networks contractors or not, was beside the point. People in the know generally never spoke openly about it, with most discussions happening only within secure channels or in private.

Maul cleared his throat and leaned back in his seat.

"So, the Goodness clan must really be getting desperate for help if the job has fallen on the shoulders of people like us, huh?" he said to Vasil, gesturing at himself and Willow.

"...and I can't even imagine what kind of leverage was used to get you involved."

During the brief stint of time between their last meeting and now, Maul had taken a look into whatever public knowledge he could find on the Vasilescu family. He'd deduced that they didn't seem all too different from the Mercy's or the Goodness' as far as the drive for credits and nobility were concerned.
20 Jul 2024, 10:54pm
Oh yeah. Secret organisation. That was the word, secret. Right, she'd have to remember that. Oh boy, that was embarrassing. Pride cometh before and all that. So that was that, no more picking on Maul for a while then.

"Oh, so um.. Like, well. There's two L's in Willow I guess" she said quietly from behind her burger thinking it'd be best if she kept her mouth shut for a while. Well, other then for eating that was.
20 Jul 2024, 11:23pm
As far as Vasil was concerned, the Network was nothing more than the usual lines of communication and information flow, so he did not pursue asking for clarification and instead looked to Maul. “I’m afraid it is nothing as dramatic as desperation on the part of Count and Countess Goodness. The simple fact is that after I pissed off the Lady Mercy and she decided finding Charles was not worth the time, effort, or money, I found myself in possession of the COVAS. My sister got involved, talked with the Countess, and we took on the responsibility of finding the lost Goodness.”

Vasil took a bite of the cheesy mac. “In truth, I doubt the Countess knows or cares who is involved with finding her son. Mercy gave your name to the Goodnesses, who gave it to my sister. You already know some of the background around the COVAS and have the skill to get into it.”

“Willow,” he said nodding towards her and her fortress of food, “has a mind for finding hidden things, and if something unfortunate happens I am confident that she will see whatever is left of me gets to where it needs to go.”
21 Jul 2024, 2:18am
He nodded in agreement with Vasil and looked over to Willow. "Yeah, she's good like that. In fact, we've already worked out a deal that gives her dibs on my new optics once I'm gone." He said gesturing towards his cybernetic eyes with two fingers and a grin, bits of crusty dried blood still remained in his mustache from his recently busted nose.

"So, what's the cred flow looking like for a job of this magnitude? I know the pockets run deep in the Goodness family, surely they're paying well. After all, it's a big galaxy out there and the heir to their fortune is a small individual in comparison. That's a whole lot of ground to cover for a potential cadaver. ya know?"

Posturing, leaning into his role, that's all it really was. The pay was just a bonus, the real goal was popping the top off of this mysterious disappearance and finding out more about this "Vengerfield" person. If he could save an innocent person in the process or put some peoples minds at ease to allow the mourning process to start, well, considering his own recent revelation, that alone was worth it to him. Besides, there would likely be ample opportunity to leverage any info he'd find in the process as blackmail for a larger payout down the line if he cared that much about the credits. Powerful people do love to keep their secrets secret.
21 Jul 2024, 3:19am
"Honestly, the payout is moderate at best for the time and effort. Ten mil each just for locating him, with two of that up front. Twenty each for a corpse recovery, and fifty each for delivering him alive and well." He had told Willow more than that and gambled that Willow would not give up that fact. Maul was still something of an unkown and he did not fully trust that he would not give Mercy the info or Creamy.

"Any information you happen to come across not related to finding the subject, him, or his family, will of course be yours." Vasil figured Maul would keep any interesting info to himself anyway, even if it was directly related to Creamy. He saw no reason to try limiting what Maul kept for himself or what he did with the info. Neither did Vasil have any way to enforce such restrictions other than relying on the man's word, so he thought it best to let Maul know up front he'd not bother trying to do so.
21 Jul 2024, 9:30am
After running her mouth about the Network, Willow decided the best thing she could bring to the table right now was silence. Anyway, there was a burger that needed her full concentration.

As well as the food, Willow was making a mental list of everything she'd need to know to start building a profile on Charles. With Vasil knowing the family and Maul able to get info Willow couldn't through legitimate channel, she should be able to point the guys in the right direction pretty quick.
21 Jul 2024, 12:57pm
He exhaled a long heavy breath through his nostrils and leaned back into the seat, tapping a rhythm on the table top as he thought about the offer.

"Kinda shit pay, not gonna lie." he said sucking on his teeth. "But fuck it, I'm in. I'm a bit of a sucker for a good mystery anyhow."

It was about 10 mil more than the last job he'd agreed to and that one stole months from his life and nearly killed him. This job involved partners at least and a less likely chance of strange mind warping scenarios that were almost embarrassing to talk about.

After a moment, he turned to Willow, who he felt was being oddly quiet. "What do you think Willow? Fair pay?"
21 Jul 2024, 1:33pm
The only way that'd be fair pay was if they got it done with in 3 days with no complications, and they found him alive and well on the next station over.

"Come on dude, that's not fair pay for finding like, a ships cat. I'm doing it for Vee really. But I am worried about the trade I'll lose on in the shop. That, and over heads has got to costing me like, 4, or maybe as high as like, 8000c a week"

She took a big bite of her burger and chewed.

"It's like, extortion or some thing, you know?" she said from behind her burger, with half a mouthful.
21 Jul 2024, 2:33pm
Vasil’s immediate trader instinct was to begin justifying the low payout. The man was probably dead and unrecoverable, so a guaranteed ten mil just to do research on what happened do him was more than fair. However, he knew the recovery and return payout was low and that he could not justify the pay being based on risk vs reward given that he’d pissed off raiders that may come looking for a little payback.

“You have a good point, Willow.” He looked between Maul and Willow. “Would another 50K a week to cover any expenses be agreeable? It could be paid in advance for ten weeks, then every ten weeks after that for as long as the job takes.”
21 Jul 2024, 7:32pm
"Dude, dude, I was like, joking you know? What's a few grand, when I can do like, any cargo run and make a few hundred grand. Chill Vee, I got you"

She nodded to Maul.

"But like, it may get him onboard, you know?"
21 Jul 2024, 8:46pm
"Aight, how about this? Since I haven't even took a crack at this COVAS yet, I'll agree to the previous offer for now. If I manage to get us ahead at all, then I'll take the 50k a week, with no pay in advance. I'll earn it."

He gave a slight shrug of his shoulders.

"I ain't looking to take the creds and run, or screw anyone over here. I've got a reputation to uphold when it comes to gigs like this." Turning to Willow, he proceeded. "And, before you say it, no, that reputation isn't to run with my tail between my legs at the first sight of danger."

He crossed his arms and looked down at the table, avoiding eye contact with anyone except the half eaten burger on Willow's plate.

"I'm not that guy anymore."
21 Jul 2024, 9:49pm
“Okay, if the money is straightened out for now, let’s talk about the COVAS and its owner.” Vasil took a bite of the mystery meatloaf and said to Maul, “If you want something, just order it. My treat.”

“This is all somewhat convoluted, but I’ll try to make it as concise as possible. There are some people pissed off because they do not have the COVAS. Maul already knows this, but Lady Lambast Mercy was originally looking for Goodness. He was last seen in the company of some raiders and she made a deal with them to help capture someone in exchange for his COVAS.”

Vasil jabbed a fork into the string beans, paused a bit and looked to Willow and maul. “I don’t know if either of you has ever seen a close quarters carrier battle, but five of them slugging it out within range of their shipboard weapons is brutal.”

“Anyway,” he said swallowing the greenbeans, “after the fighting was done, I ended up with an escape pod containing the person the pirate wanted, so I traded the pod for the COVAS. Only... the pod I gave him had a corpse in it instead of the person he wanted.”

“Then I screwed up trading the COVAS with the lady to the point she essentially decided to just let Creamy--Charles, I mean--remain lost.” He side nodded his head to Maul. "I am sure Maul is familiar with how... difficult the lady can be.”

“Essentially I’ve pissed off some violent people and some influential people. All because I did not trade a girl for the COVAS, or give the girl to the lady to trade for the COVAS.”

Vasil took a bite of the mystery meatloaf. “And that is where we currently stand.”
21 Jul 2024, 10:05pm
Maul squinted his eyes and tried to bite his tongue but couldn’t resist. Lambast never really said anything to him directly but he could tell by her demeanor that she wasn’t just sour because of a deal gone wrong.

“I don’t know man. Lamb can certainly be difficult, no doubt about that, but she really seemed to be upset with you turning out to be more of an opportunist than a friend. She ain’t got a lot of those, ya know?” he stammered a bit. “Umm…but yeah, that’s just how business is, I guess.”
