Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Stryker's blue eyes were upon Jem's. He stood there quietly as she set the glass down, then with the index claw of his cybernetic, he tilted her chin up gently.

"But you didn't go through with it?" He asked kindly. "Why?"
17 Jan 2017, 9:49pm
Jemine stiffens, ever so slightly unnerved by the touch of Stryker's cybernetic finger on her chin.

"I didn't go through with it for one very simple reason," she explains. "Caz died. While I was sunbathing on the deck, he decided to go for a swim. He didn't come back. The police said he'd most likely been taken by a shark. His body was discovered months later, by a subaquatic engineering survey team off the coast of Massachusetts."
17 Jan 2017, 10:21pm
Stryker was taken back by that. He was expecting a run-a-way bride, or something similar. Jem lost her daughter, and a potential husband. Life was so unfair. And he use to think he was the only one in the galaxy that drew the short stick.

He removed the claw and shook his head.

"I've very sorry to hear that as well. So much loss, living the hard life to make ends meet."

He sat back down, rubbing the interface between the machine and flesh.

"So now your out among the stars. Can I ask what it is you do?"
18 Jan 2017, 1:48pm
"Trading, mainly," Jemine answers. "Though I'm not particularly good at it! I never did have a good head for business, you see. My very first trade run resulted in a loss, in fact. I've learned one or two things since then."

She gives an involuntary shudder as she watches Stryker rubbing his arm, and glances at the cybernetic hand.

"Is that painful?" she asks.
18 Jan 2017, 5:16pm
Stryker face broke into a smile.

"Never very good with buying and selling and all that margin stuff.....I mean, I can balance my accounts and whatnot..." He added.

Looking down at his claw, the smile faltered.

"You know when your planet-side on a cold day, your bones, or joints ache? It's like that. It's not terribly bad. But it does gets worse the colder it gets." He chuckled.

"So what did you not so successfully trade in?"
18 Jan 2017, 6:39pm
Jemine laughs.

"Cobalt. I picked it more or less at random, and then couldn't find a market for it at any of the nearby systems. I was so disgusted, I sold it at a loss. Sometime later I was given some sound advice by an experienced trader. He told me to buy low and sell high. Quite obvious, really, but it was a detail that had escaped me until that point."

The smile on Jemine's face is replaced by a frown. "I draw the line at trading in slaves," she says. "I've bought and sold all sorts of things, but not slaves. Never slaves."
18 Jan 2017, 8:04pm
Stryker listened to Jem. He hadn't done conventional trading. His involved the movement of "live stock." As despicable as it is, he assuaged his conscience by assigning it that title.

"Everyone has their limits. No doubt about that. Though, there can be good money involved if your willing to sell yourself out."

He gave a shrug.

"As we were talking about earlier, things aren't so cut and dry out here. I wish it were."
19 Jan 2017, 12:27pm
"Oh, I've learned one or two things about the 'verse in the last couple of years," says Jemine, with a wry smile. "And my recent experiences in Pegasi taught me quite a bit about myself, too."

Sighing, Jemine takes a look at her surroundings before turning to face Stryker again.

"So," she says. "What is it you get up to in this pretty ship of yours?"
19 Jan 2017, 5:47pm
Stryker sat back down, draping an arm around Jem once again. He enjoyed the close physical contact. Upon her question he looked fondly at his ships surrounding.

"Oh, the Broken Bow? I found here derelict in a ship graveyard in Kou Zu. She was little more then twisted wreckage. I donno..." He shrugged his massive shoulders. "At first, I thought it looked, ugly. Bulky...Non-functional..." He then looked down at his claw, and flexed it, lost in a memory.

Much like this thing....

"And... I don't know. I adopted it. I mean, there were ships in better condition but, I thought I would make a project out of her...Fix her up. Give her another crack at whole space faring thing." He looked up at the ceiling. "I've put a lot of hours into her." He said with proud affection looking back into Jem's eyes. "A lot of modifications..." The bodybuilder sighed. "Working on her and..." He pointed the the half finished needlepoint print on the coffee table, "...that, has been quite therapeutic. Helped me learn to control this." He flexed the cyber-claw again.

"I believe in second chances..."
20 Jan 2017, 5:49am
Amar sat on his bed aboard the FSS Eagle's Flame. His cabin, was spacious,  but in desperate need of an interior decorator.  He had just fished the bottle of scotch out from under his bed when his PDA sounded. Here it comes, he thought.

The message simply read, "Notice of Dis-employment. This is to notify that Ensign Amar Epsilon, is no longer serving under Citi-Gateway Security forces. We regret to inform you that you must return to the Security Office and clear out your office before 2100 today else your belongings will be seized and auctioned off with the Repossessed Items.

-Sincerely, HM Gavenworth"

Another message followed, this one more along the lines of what he expected. "COMMANDER! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WERE YOU THINKING! You are a senior security officer recently promoted. You just caused a scene at the docks with some crack head! The dock division is now all up my ass to get you discharged! Hell that is it! You're FIRED! I don't care how good of a pilot you think you are or how many of my men you saved that one time, or how many convicts you have put away. This is the last fiasco you ever pull in this office! i already have people pulling your crap out of your office! DONT EVER COME BACK!

-Go earnestly fuck off, CO Yelsma

PS: Thanks for listening to that tirade, not that you'll ever have to listen or read one again.
PPS: Your stuff is en-route to your docking pad. Along with your last pay."

Well, that was exciting... On the plus side, he had alcohol and knew exactly what to do with it. For some reason, this made him smile. Time to find the bottom of this bottle!
20 Jan 2017, 1:40pm
Jemine gives an appreciative nod.

"You must have put an awful lot of time, effort and money into restoring her," she says, "if she was as badly damaged as you say. And I can see that you're proud of her."

Leaning forward, she picks up the piece of needlework that lay on the table and examines it.

"This is very good," she comments, before glancing back down to Stryker's cybernetic hand. "How did it happen?" she asks, adding, "If it's not an impolite question."
20 Jan 2017, 6:07pm
Stryker smiled.
"You know, a lot of components can be requisitioned used, and are in perfectly good condition. Sure some things might need a bit of fixing, but it sure saves on the 'ol credit chit."

He lifted his claw up, the bicep bulged and flexed. "It was a choice. Loose my arm, or loose my life." Stryker examined it, lost in a memory. His brows furrowed. "It was caught under a bulkhead as a power plant was going critical. I had to....I had to remove it." He said bitterly. Then in an undertone. "But she got hers in the end..."

He looked back into Jem's pretty face. "So, I lost my arm, and it created a political debacle and as punishment, I was fitted with this thing." He shrugged. "I hated it at first. But, It's been growing on me. Maybe I'm getting use to it, or maybe....Maybe Deggie knew something I didn't. It doesn't matter..."

He couldn't help but marvel at her fine facial features. For a moment he gazed into her eyes. Stryker leaned in and gave her a kiss.
21 Jan 2017, 10:51am
Closing her eyes, Jemine returns the kiss, at the same time releasing her hold on the needlework and letting it fall to the deck. With both hands now free, she entwines her fingers behind Stryker's neck and lies back onto the couch, pulling him down on top of her.

As their lips softly part, Jemine opens her eyes and looks up at Stryker.

"Who was she?" asks Jemine after a few moments. "You said, 'she got hers in the end...' What did you mean by that?"
22 Jan 2017, 3:24am
The 320 pound hulk propped himself over the lovely woman. She asked Stryker a question as their lips parted. He thought for a moment.

"It's a bit of a story." He started with. "When I was an engineer for the Imperial Navy, there was an accident that resulted in the death of one of my men. I was placed on suspended pay. Then an old friend showed up. She's an eccentric old bat, that, pulled some strings to, string me along on some cock and bull treasure hunt her late husband had set up for her."

Stryker deliberately left Evy out. He didn't want to bring her up, and he didn't want to compare the two women, or Jem to compare herself to his now dead lover.

"Anyway, out ship was commandeered by a pirate. Her name was Black Rose." The bodybuilder shifted his weight a bit, continuing to gaze into Jem's eyes.

"Well, she wasn't successful, and as we were escaping her custody I liberally applied the working end of a wrench to her. I though she was dead..." Stryker looked away for a moment, lost in a memory. "I was wrong."

"Some time later," he continued, "I was returning from a job, when I was interdicted. It happened so fast. I remember seeing a ship, a bright light and then nothing. I awoke to a haze..." He was hesitant to tell the next part.

How detailed should I get? He decided to leave things vague.

"Well anyway. She had found me, and was going to extract her revenge, but I managed to give her the slip. As I went about sabotaging her ship and sending out a distress call, she found me in the engine room..." Stryker paused.

"It's never a good idea to engage in a firefight around the power plant. Needless to say, things happened quickly. I remember seeing Black Rose go up in an inferno. I can still hear the scream...." He took another pause. "The emergency bulk head came down and my arm was trapped under it. The power plant was going critical. I had to make a choice. Her sword was right there, and I used to....to remove my forearm...." He gulped remembering the hacking pain, followed by the searing burn of him placing the bloody stump against the super heated heat sink in order to cauterize the gaping wound. "It's amazing what a person will do to stay alive. Anyway, I don't remember much after that except I made it to an escape pod, and was found alive."

His blue eyes met with Jem's again.

"I owe Jubei my life."

It took some time, but eventually Markus found himself at the Anaconda's landing pad.

Took a few people to convince.. Bloody shit this is so stupid. Markus thought as a wave of pain cascaded through his stomach. I could've  been out of here two days ago. If this continues I may have to resort to stealing credits..

He looked around a moment for a button and punched it.

"Amar Epsilon." Markus' voice boomed throughout the bay. "This is Markus Omni, you spoke to me previously in the bar. You said that you would provide me a ride to Nanomam. As I am still here..." Markus took a breath to re-evaluate himself. "I would like to recouplate a plan with you. Please come down."

If he's not down here in five minutes...
