No rush at all.

Personally, I'm putting off posting until everyone has had time to cool off. Maybe a day or two at least. Some people may come back having just announced their departure as a spur of the moment thing, although there's no way to tell for certain.

Here's hoping for the best.

As they say on Googles, +1.

Damn dude, I just read the whole thing and now I'm afraid as well.
..
I think I'll go read one more of those collected stories before I try my hand at entering the "fun zone."

As for background purposes, what's the school most or least pilots go to to learn how fly?

I don't know if the lore makes it clear as to where pilots recieve their training, but several of us have written about a "Pilot's Fed Academy". It would also make sense for men and women with previous experience (as with a shipping company or military) to be granted an expedited Pilot's Fed membership.

Pilots Fed - does that have anything to do with the Federation? See I was thinking of starting off with the Empire, but making my way, wherever. The military makes sense. Is there an Empire (Imperial??), as in, would it be appropriate to use something along the lines of "Pilot's Empire (impeiralclaiclaler?!) Academy?" Thanks for the previous answer by the way~

In my mind, I'd suspect the Pilot's Federation doesn't have any school; defacto or otherwise. You earn your Elite status through experience, which gets you access to their home system.  It's also a big galaxy with thousands of human inhabited worlds so the Pilot's Federation would get everyone from self-taught (idiot savant or otherwise) to long time military and commercial types.

I'd suggest investigating how that sort of thing works in real life right now, then just scale it up with a pinch of imagination.  As for my character, Phisto, I'm trying to develop some kind of pseudo-religious marital group that trains all it's members from birth for some future pilot role.

I get around it by cleverly avoiding mentioning it. John went from the Imperial Navy into Freelancing, and I never really mention the Pilot's Fed.

According to the information available on Inara, the Pilot's Federation is Independent. So, the name suggest Federation of PIlots, not the Federation's Pilots.

The Pilots Federation is an independent, apolitical group - so they say - that is based in the Shinrarta Dezhra system. They tend to steer clear of galactic politics.

As far as schools go, I never really thought much of it. I personally don't think it's quite as simple as enrolling in a school - otherwise there'd be a lot of NPCs that are also members of the PF, which is simply not the case. Some fighter pilot bios imply that gaining entry to the PF is no small feat, but the exact details aren't clear. Unless FDEV steps in and spells it out, there's probably plenty of wiggle room to work with though.

The official lore is mum about how exactly pilots are trained, but makes clear that the Pilot's Federation with its cartography and Gal-Net subsidiaries are an immensely powerful independent organization.

Spoilers! I was looking forward to being granted to this mysterious system!

Indeed. Lots of mental fuel. Not that it's original or anything, but I just ran through how extraordinary it really is to join the Pilots Federation. Trillions of humans, thousands of worlds, and the entire play population of Elite is only a drop in the galactic bucket. Then consider community goals, and how the efforts of that tiny group can be harnessed for projects we 21th century bums can only play video games about.

Sci-Fi, yo.
