Elite roleplay: Q&A and OOC

SonofMacPhistoHave I been calling Borggy's character the wrong name this entire time? My apologies, I must be drunk I mean my character must be drunk.

On quick review it appears 'Borggy' has only ever referred to himself as Mathius in the RP. So my answer is yes I'm afraid, you have been calling him the wrong thing

Luke3107Here's a nice middle ground.

It is in fact, just a run of the mill wristpad. But in the same way Luke has a taste for 20th & 21st Century Rock, Maschil has played Fallout via emulator or whatever and that's why he refers to the wristpad as a Pip-Boy.

Here's the problem with that though. Fallout is roughly 1000 years old by this point. When was the last time you read a 1000 year old book that wasn't a historically significant piece, like the bible or Beowulf?

Furthermore, it can't be excused as coincidence either, not because it's impossible, but because of where the name has been already used. Say I name a character Harry Potter. That is a perfectly valid name, and I'm sure there are actual people with that name in the world? So can I use it? No. Why? Because EVERYONE will think of the series Harry Potter. Because of that, no professional author will be able to use that name for the rest of the century at least. Is that unfair? Probably, but it is still true.

Dang it! I blame my years as a forum rat. This is the first place in my experience where a poster isn't regularly referring to themselves. Again, my apologies. I shall do better going forward.

Fair point. Was worth a shot

Don't be too disheartened. It happens. On the plus, it doesn't change anything that happened in the RP and everyone knows who you were talking to. Even Borggy himself either didn't notice or didn't care. There's been times where I have to double check who I'm responding to in the cases where multiple characters are controlled by one user. For example, Ten or Jacob, and/or Isaiah or Cait. It's very easy to just use the forum name and run with it, so don't beat yourself up about it.

Stryker AuneSo, yes, there is Leonard Nimoy station, orbiting a planet in game called Vulcan. How is that any different then us naming the moons of Jupiter and Saturn after mythological figures?

I'll just point out that Vulcan was a Roman deity before it was a Star Trek species (in fact, our word 'volcano' comes from him). When Leonard Nemoy died last year, the FDev team decided to pay respects by naming the most obvious station choice - the one around a planet already called Vulcan (after the god of fire, not the Star Trek species). This should be considered an OOC tip-of-the-hat and not hard canon in the Elite universe.

I still think the argument stands, despite the details of the origin of the planet naming.

Its really moot if the planet is named after a Roman god, or some fictional Star Trek planet, named after a Roman god. The point, is that its one thing to name a station or planet after inspiration drawn from history (either fictional and non-fictional), vs, actually saying the Roman God of Fire is tromping around in a cobra mk. III.

(I understand that renaming the station was a farewell to the beloved actor. Who's to say that station names don't or cannot change over time anyway, based on various reasons?)

Just once, I'd like to see when someone makes a RP request of someone else, that the other person says "Oh! My mistake, my apologies," and adjusts their RP accordingly as to not ruin anyone else's experience, instead of doubling down like a dickface and getting all butthurt about it.

Just once.

M. Lehman
"Whoa!" Maschil declared with genuine astonishment while looking down at his Pip-Boy 200k. "These are some nice captures. You really do get around." Maschil looked up from his data-pad to see Mathias eyeing it with aversion. "Hey, don't judge me. I know, I know, this things ancient, but like my dad always said 'why fix what isn't broken?' Right?" said Maschil defensively. 'Maybe it is time for an upgrade. They are giving out the newest data-pads for free now... No, no, no. What am I thinking? I must be getting a little tipsy. I love my Pip-Boy it's always done me solid.'

Is there any way that we can avoid shoehorning items from other sci-fi contexts? It severely weakens the RP that is assumed to take place in the Elite universe.

Perhaps any the following?

-Wrist computer (I've used that one several times myself!)

- Arm/wrist slate

- Projector

- Mini-holo

- Assistant

- InfoDisplay

- Net Link

- ArmNet

@M. Lehman in a universe of over 400 billion systems how can you be sure that there are not any of the items or creatures I mentioned that you claim to not be of the Elite universe. As a man of science I am convinced it would be naive to believe that a "Pip-Boy" would only be in one single fragment of existance, but for your satisfaction we can assume that my character has attained the capability to travel between different dimensions and therefore may make reference or mention of objects and beings that are simply unfathomable to yourself and like minded individuals.

I can be sure that a PipBoy isn't part of the Elite universe. Do you know how? Because it's already a central, trademarked part of the Fallout universe.

And I'm afraid that your generous offer to have your character be some Q-esque dimension-hopper doesn't fly, either.

Look: no one here is opposed to your character having a wrist computer of some kind. What we're opposed to the disrespect shown to the Elite RP setting by the blithe injection of a Fallout-specific item. Even the site's own rules clearly say to respect the canon. Walking in with a PipBoy isn't respecting the canon.

It's disrespectful. It's unimaginative. It's bad RP. And your "solution" is dead on arrival, for reasons I hope I don't have to explain.

Now let's work together to come up with a mutually acceptable alternative. Did anything from my list of suggestions appeal to you?

Stryker AuneMaschil_Crane,

As a fellow man of science, there are a few things that have me concerned about your posts that I would like clarification on.

The argument here,
1) The universe is big...
2) And because it is big, anything is possible...
3)So therefore in our big universe anything is possible,
is based on faulty logic. I would very much like to see scientific evidence that supports your claim.

In the meantime, I will present scientific evidence that states otherwise.
Two scientist by the names of Enrico Fermi and Michael Hart postulated the question "Where is everybody?" Using the Drake Equation they set out to answer that question.

The results, were not what anyone expected. The Fermi Paradox was born. In summery is states that the likelihood of extraterrestrial life in a galaxy of 400 billion stars, is astronomically remote (pun intended). That size actually works against the argument that more means a higher probability, but in fact that larger sizes means less likelihood of meeting other extraterrestrial races. Now I know this is based on the likelihood of meeting other races, and not scientific advancement. But here is the deal. Time travel is not possible. Stephen Hawkings has thoroughly explored this idea, and there are physical limits to what is possible, and not in this universe. The idea of a multiverse, is just that, a theory with no real scientific justification for its existence. If you can provide me some for review, I would be most gracious.

If I missing something, please correct me.

Maschil_Crane

Then George Lucas station is bs too. Sorry bout it. Hostile aliens are busy jumping in and out of the universe through a manufactured wormhole and mfs worried about the name of my wrist computer...

*shakes head solemnly*

Since Elite dangerous takes place in 3300-ish, it would be quite conceivable that there was once a 1964. And in that year, a man by the name of Gene Roddenberry produced a fictional television show called Star Trek.

It would also stand to be reasonable that in the Elite Dangerous time line there was also a 1954, where the British Author J. R. R. Tolkein published the first of his multipart book entitled Lord of the Rings.

Since Elite History includes our history, would it also be conceivable that engineers and politicians would draw inspiration from historical figures, both fictional and non-fictional in naming their stations?

As a scientist, I would have thought you would know the difference from drawing inspiration for naming things, verses injecting said named things into existing lore. That is, there is a difference between naming a space station "Enterprise" verses, a constitution class ship roaming the Elite Dangerous Universe fighting Klingons. So, yes, there is Leonard Nimoy station, orbiting a planet in game called Vulcan. How is that any different then us naming the moons of Jupiter and Saturn after mythological figures?

Am I missing something here as well?

Maschil_CraneOffer to give CMDR Crane a new wrist computer. Maybe he'll take it and then you wont ever have to hear about his Pip-Boy again. Unless he recalls it in a distant and narrated memory for some reason or another.

Creativity is part of what RPs about. If it bothers you then RP around it.

This one has me baffled. Help me understand how Plagiarism is considered creative?

An ending note. Yes Wikipedia is not considered a peer reviewed source, but I couldn't be arsed with finding all of figures and theories in text books, scanning them in and linking them.

I await you rebuttal,

Stryker Aune

(Not taking sides here) you presented that quite well. Why the hell are you using your skills as an Elite: Dangerous fan fiction writer rather than as some speaker-of-the-house (government) type figurine? : o

Steve SakeThe thing is that our real timeline up until now is shared with the Elite universe, so people like George Lucas, Tolkien and everything else you mentioned are known in the year 3303. The fact that stations and characters share their name is just a homage, much like we name streets and monuments after historical people. Shoehorning a device that is clearly part of another universe makes zero sense and trying to justify it saying that the universe is vast and it's totally possible that someone somewhere has invented The Pip Boy makes even less sense.

Im not going to waste my time quoting everybody or researching for links and dates to make my argument more valid because in all reality or realities, its not that serious.

So, it is established that our timeline coincides with the elite to some extent yes? On Earth a game called "Fallout" was created. Fallouts timeline also coincidently falls into that of our own you that is evident based on Fallouts lore & history. So, you are telling me that it is ok for a permanent space station or system to pay homage to an event or thing that is, according to most of yall, not of this world, yet simeultaneously, on the same timeline, but I cant call my wrist computer a Pip-Boy?

And to whoever made the long scientific statement earlier, you answered youre own question. Everything you said does not take into consideration technological advancement.

Btw time travel is possible. I am travelling through time as I type this. So are you. I am also soaring through the galaxy from the direct center of the universe, from my own perception at least and it has been proven that percetion creates reality... Schrodingers Cat. So, tell me again how everything is not possible. Possibly not very probable, but nearly indefinitely possible.

Thats life. People have differing persepectives and ideals. Do you just submit and give up your ways to anybody that is inconvenienced or has a problem with the way you do things? If so I feel sorry for you. If anything I am the last person here that is butthurt. Most of yall are the ones with a stick up your arse about the supposed authenticity of an, sorry to burst your bubble, an entirely fictional world. I am having fun with it & I enjoy subtly suggesting that all worlds are connected in some way. Its not copyright infringement or plagiarism unless I am selling the works or claiming they are my own. I see them as Easter eggs.
