Elite roleplay: Q&A and OOC

To me it's like the Black Box in an airplane. Protected from possible outside influences such as EMPs and large crashes.

That way you can always find out what happened to the pilot of a destroyed ship.

Stryker AuneSo, concerning the thargoid scanning thing. Since they shut down all electronic systems, how could there be any video footage of them doing what it is they do?

I mean in my mind, it sorta plays out like a modern day redneck. "You see, there was the flying flower thing, and it spun around shooting yellow light at me, and then it picked me up with its mind powers and shook me all around...."

"Nah man you were jus hulucimuhtating cuz the governmn's been puttin toxins in the watuh supply."

That's kinda the line of reasoning I went with in my character's logbook regarding what happened to his family. Considering how far into the future this all takes place, it's not a stretch to think they've advanced beyond the current Faraday cage/shield model and adapted it to a setting where solar flares and cosmic radiation are a constant for pilots.

The protection against solar flares and cosmic radiation is a good point. Can't reasonably imagine the Thargoids having anything more powerful than flippin' stars.

I don't think cosmic radiation is the type that tampers with electronics.

as far as I know, the apollo missions basically discovered there was an immensely radioactive field between the Earth and the moon. Radioactive enough for the particles to trigger nerves in the austronaut's eyes causing them to see white spots.

It didn't tamper with the electronics however. But yeah, It does make sense that black boxes carry additional shieldings and back-ups to survive EM tampering, scince ships are quite commonly used for military, or similair applications.

For fuck's sake, now they're all talking in first person.....

I'm confused!

Choice of perspective is up to the writer. Some people like to put themselves right into their characters in 1st person, others prefer to stand back and describe the action happening in 3rd person.

From what I've seen here, many folks use 3rd person and use italics to convey inner monologue and thoughts of their character.

There's no right or wrong to this. As long as the characters and plots are compelling, I'll enjoy it

Marra is correct here. So long as it the author has clearly demonstrated what is going on, it's really a matter preference. I personally like consistency. If an author bounces back and forth between 1st and 3rd it can be a bit off putting.

Hey Isaiah, I get you're going through a breakup but that doesn't give you the right to cut the line!!!

Edit: Ignore that, I thought you'd already found a corner to sit in... Whoops!!!

I personally prefer to run first person for my own stories, and third person for RP. That's just my preference though.

Well, it makes more sense that way, doesn't it?

If you have a bunch of people RP'ing in first person in Inara's format it´ll be like trying to read trough four diffirent stories, switching from story everytime someone else is posting.

Doing it in third person would make the whole RP just óne collaborate story, wich I think is a lot easier to read.

But yeah, it´s the writer´s choice.

Go point by point then.

As you gain experience, you'll start to add more color and flavor to your posts. But don't be shy. Join in. The only way to get better is through practice.

The Man Himself Drew Wagar wrote a really handy guide to fiction writing. Many of the suggestions that he had are readily cross-applied to forum-style roleplay, and I myself read it (among other guides) once or twice a month just to keep myself grounded in solid advice for my own writing.

Just to give a few of the most important bits for the RP forums:

- Respect other people's characters. Don't put words in their mouth or have them perform actions unless you have permission from them to do so.

- Use proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Know the rules of English dialogue writing, and don't write in "text" language.

"Pips to shields," said Anyone Realname. "Who knows what we're in for?" is so much nicer to read than "pipz to shlds!" sayd CMDR AwesomePants69. "Who nos what were in 4.'

Note that Sunday-school proper grammar in dialogue is the exception to this rule. One of the best pieces of writing  advice that I ever read is to master the rules of grammar- so that you can break them! Sometimes it's appropriate for a character to speak formally and correctly. For others, a more haphazard approach to grammar is best.

"Hell, darlin'- I could use a drink." and "I require an alcoholic beverage posthaste!" are both valid ways of expressing the exact same sentiment, but one will be more suited to certain characters and the other to others.

Best of luck to you, and I look forward to seeing your contributions!
