HappyComrieIs anyone here coincidentally familiar with the name Marko Ramius, and / or Bart Mancuso?

HappyComrieDon't worry about it!

I was asking about it because I thought Ramius and Borodin would make great higher officers for the storyline, and since I'm quite bad at figuring out names by myself I was hoping to just use theirs if nobody's ever heard of them.

But scince people do I won't be able to get away with that...

To be fair, naming your character after one in another book shouldn't be an issue. Just don't make your character actually be the namesake. Or alternatively, just switch their first and last names. So you end up with Marko Mancuso and Bart Ramius. Those are still decent names and you keep your little 'Easter Egg'

Also, I like the Tom Clancy Games. There, I contributed....

Ehhhhh.... I'd probably steer clear of names that are that obviously lifted from famous works. "Marko Mancuso" isn't too bad, though. As tempting as it is to have an homage to favorite works, it breaks the immersion for the reader for them to be reading about "Marko Ramius" in an Elite setting, because that name slot is already mentally filled. In essence, you sabotage your own character's legitimacy.

I agree with M. Lehman on this.

Mark Mancuso? That seems to slip the bonds of "Hey isn't that a reference to...?"

Ye, after a bit of rethinking, it occurred to me that if I had named my characters something like Thomas Anderson, or Turanga Leela it would indeed be a bit daft. So disregard that plan Comrie, apologies

I see no issue with referencing the name, but outright copying it gets into some strange territory.

I was honestly expecting noone to have ever heard of that name, but it turns out you're all a lot bigger Tom Clancy fans than I am at the moment!

And yeah, Like I said. If everybody has heard of those names I wont be able to get away with that. Soo I'll just try to come up with some on my own this afternoon.

Say what you will about Clancy's game legacy, but Wildlands is a lot of fun.

I did read the HAWX novelization, which is only tangentially related to the plot of the game. Same deal about PMCs taking over and all. Obviously not written by the man himself, but it was an OK book. Food for thought when you think about Erik Prince and his latest pet project.

@Bryan Iscariot.

Correct me if I am wrong, but your character, too, was wearing Imperial regalia?

Yeah, he was, don't worry.

There are so many of you running around, I'm having a hard time keeping track of everyone's attire, behaviors, backstories, and whatnot. It's a good problem to be sure! But, I'm probably going to be pestering you all to make sure I'm painting your characters correctly in my posts.

Yes but I've no medals and stuff on it. I'm just wearing the plain uniform. Except maybe a pin that shows his naval rank. I don't know if that's a thing.

I really had to smirk as I saw the sidewinder coming into the dock hitting a T7. Ah, these newjacks, so refreshing! @Jacyn
