Elite roleplay: Q&A and OOC

All posts were done in strict third person limited perspective... the perspective of the viewer, the other players. Players can't read minds, so emoting thoughts and feelings was frowned upon.
The focus was player interactions, so extended conversations with NPCs in the company of players was seen as odd.

It's pretty much down to individual taste, here.

I use that 3rd person limited perspective for my own RPs, using body language, tone and expression to convey what my characters are thinking and feeling.

I don't mind at all if others choose to give us glimpses of their character's thoughts, that's fine.

And I do prefer the short and concise posts too. Sometimes a longer one is necessary to set the scene, but after that quick back-and-to's are nice and more engaging.

Come to think of it, I think you did use third limited while you were doing your "back of the bar mob boss" shtick
I've encountered what I call "novelists" before, as long as this time I'm not looked down on for short responses, I think my style should fit well.

Anyone who follows the guidelines on each RP board should fit well

I'm not sure I particularly care for this style. All my previous RP experience was done in game or via a forum based MUD where the RP was very much designed to operate as a game.
Posts were short and concise, designed to maintain a steady flow at as close to the rate of natural conversation as possible. Word walling and slow typing were discouraged.

I can understand your reservation. But, this isn't a MUD. The style here is up to the individual making the post. I can say for me, I'm not a fan of 2000 word post. That's what a logbook is for. Here, I like to think of it as an extension of story telling.

Sometimes you need NPCs to move a story along.

Halorym  Inara seems to run their RP system more like a collaborative novel, which I have little problem with, but I now have to decide to either conform, or be the one guy no one can see inside the head of.

Inara RP doesn't have a single person running it (besides Artie the site admin, but he doesn't RP). Many of us have collaborated with each other in our logs, so a natural outgrown of that is RP the consequences of those interactions. It creates drama. Again, I like to think of the RP here as more of story being told from many different perspectives. Ultimately it's up to you to decide if your comfortable with jumping into this style of RP or not. I would encourage you to at least give it shot. You never know if you'll like it or not unless you try.

Would also like to note that, while on occasion, people in the RP forums have been known to collaborate over what is going to happen in RP, it is not standard practice.

For example, my own RP with Mhera had a few messages between myself and her creator over specific events that would happen. However, the RP I have with Jacob right now is very much on the spot, albeit with long times between responses due to real life getting in the way.

Ultimately, the style of writing is up to the writer. Although the choice to read is up to the reader, so keep it consistent or you may find people switching off. Also, don't be disheartened if people don't jump in immediately to engage in RP with you, as you can see, plenty of us already have things going on that can limit the potential for meeting new characters. That said, if you're struggling, I have a sort of "Generic Character" who I've made use of on occasion to help out people who aren't getting much interaction. Just PM me and I'll bring him out if you so wish.

Edit: In terms of length, long posts are fine now and again. Provided there is a reasonable need for one. Book length expositional posts detailing everything that's happening from the dawn of time to the characters death, are for log books. Similarly, short posts containing two or three words, such as simply "John waved" are incredibly redundant. Waved at who? Provided the post accomplishes something meaningful, it doesn't really matter the length. So if your style is short, snappy posts, go right ahead.

Have you seen some of my responses? Hahaha. You'll be fine.

Like Marra said, follow the guidelines and you will have a good time.

Chapter Two of Matt Lehman's "Second Chances" is out Tuesday evening UK time. Here's a sneak preview...

Jemine pursed her lips. The gulf between how things had been and how they were now was eating away at her.

“So- how have you been?”

Matt froze, his hand gripping the throttle. He glanced to his side, his profile against the blackness of space. He didn’t quite look at his passenger.

“Same ol’, same ol’, I reckon.”

The woman looked down. Ask a generic question, get a generic answer.

After a moment of summoning her courage, she looked up again.

“I’m sorry.”

The man’s lips hardened.

“For what?”

Jemine swallowed.

“Me. The way I left. Not being in touch. Everything.”

Matt turned back. Soon they would be out of Blackmount’s range, the first of many, many hyperspace jumps ahead of them. The Fer-de-Lance was a deadly ship, but one with stubby legs.

“Ain’t no need to be. You had a man back at home, and we-”

He hesitated, searching for the right words.

“Well, it was what it was.”

If you need to catch up on the first instalment, here it is...

I asked something similar before, but here goes nothing again:

Most of the time I feel like rushing through systems and stations makes the universe so shallow, where there's so much detail to explore. And I know many people here would agree with me that rushing through this game is not the way.
So, for the sake of my peculiar immersion, I seek some kind of routine contents to enjoy during my stay in a station. Daily chats/news/etc, something to fill the void. Checking the market and local in-game news just doesn't do enough.
(instead of spending a couple of minutes in a station before departing again, I have the choice to simulate a more realistic approach and spend, at least, half an hour in a station I'm just visitng. But there must be content to develop in the meantime.)

I guess this is a tough and unpopular request anyway, but eh. Anyone know of anything that could help me with that? People seeking the same kind of immersion, some specific bot chat that does a good job simulating tavern chit chat, etc.? Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of time to do anything like that.

I usually play for an hour, sometimes two, each day. I've got a group to organise and goals to hit, so I'm quite gratefull for not having to spend any kind of realistic time in stations!

Pretty sure that someone with more time and sense of in-game immersion will join you
