For a Pilot's Federation member to not know who John Jameson was is pretty much like a physicist being ignorant of the name "Albert Einstein".
If I were you, I'd play this one like I'd been joking all along... it's pretty much the only way to save your character's dignity and believability at this point.

I knew about his name in the 1984 game and what not. I just didn't realise it was so ingrained in the lore. The crashed ship came across as a sort of 'easter egg' to me. Rather than a massive story reveal.

I'm about 200 LY from Inara system and heading to the actual Citi Gateway station would not be in character for me. Is it appropriate to drop in without actually landing at the station?

If by "respect the universe" you mean "adhere to what you're doing in-game", I'd say that there's no pressure to do so. Lots of us write stories and engage in roleplay that either only loosely follows our in-game activities or totally diverges from it. By all means stop by!
I would urge, however, to take a look at the roleplay guidelines before posting.

RP Stryker has been to Inara quite a few times. RL Stryker has been to Inara once. Very rarely does RP Stryker's going on reflect what I've been doing in game. For me if I were to write out my in game adventure into RP format it would be something like this:
I went to Inara. Why the fuck is Citi Gateway so far away? I smuggled in like, I don't know, enough drugs to knock out an entire civilization. I told the black market person, "I WANT TO SELL ILLLEGIAL GOODS." I'm amazed how fast the dock workers unloaded the stuff. I saw a viper fly overhead. It was magestic; like a Space duck. What a great bird....
I don't know. I dont translate in game stuff well to RP.
Jem on the other hand....
