Elite roleplay: Q&A and OOC

Primarily my reason for not starting an RP here yet. I know the basics of the lore here, but nothing too in-depth. I would also hate to be called out on it as well.

HoloMe's explanation is tenuous at best. You may see HoloMe used in communications, as this excerpt from Elite: Wanted illustrates: 

"It didn’t take long for someone from the Darkwater station to avatar onto her bridge either, a full hologram rendering. A commander, by the flash on his shoulder. Not some flunky but one of the station’s senior officers. Could even be the watch officer. The hologram wasn’t him, of course – that wasn’t how Darkwater worked. No faces. Instead it was a complex algorithm that generated the illusion of a generic person. In this way, everyone from Darkwater looked roughly the same."

But as far as controlling the ship, I'm pretty sure it's you. Otherwise there's very little point in having manned vessels at all. No need for living quarters, or canopies, or cockpits. 

There are several trailers used during the Beyond season that clearly illustrates actual pilots and crew being physically present onboard the ship. Commander Chronicles, I believe they were called.

Odyssey's announcement also seems to dispel most explanations for being just a hologram in a seat.

Generally, people will point out an inconsistency and try to help you with it. I mean, if you didn't know or doesn't make in-universe logical sense, no harm no foul. Most people want to help. It's when the content is seen as a complete rejection of the in-universe lore, or logical connections, that people tend to get called out.

When an RPer does their research and finds creative ways to convey the things they like, then it's all good. However, if someone pulls in an obvious device/race/creature from another game/TV show/movie with no in-universe dressing or explanation, that's when the people who are putting in creative effort get a bit upset. Especially if help is offered to make it more Elite-believable, but then is harshly thrown back and spat upon... well it's insulting to say the least. Especially when some of us have been a part of the Elite lore itself.

These days I just shrug if people are going to be unreceptive to any help I offer. There is a very good resource on Inara: the Lore discussion board for people to talk about the gaping holes in the lore and come up with something plausible in-universe. Additionally, there is the Elite:Lore discord, where you can find people talking about the lore and posting neat art things to have fun with.

Trust me Aleksander, if you put in the effort, no one will call you out in a negative way.

I think that someone might be seeing a connection to the HoloMe function, the ability to alter one's character appearance, with what's it called, a Co-Pilot invite to one's ship bridge? The other player isn't actually there, but a full-size hologram is, do I have that right?

This FDev approved and Lore canon. This is the most contested and hated part of the lore. However, Odyssey may have retconed this... only time will tell.

This is why Frontier shouldn't try to justify gameplay mechanics with lore. But I digress. 

The applications are interesting, but I don't think HoloMe necessarily applies to the whole of Elite. It's entirely possible that the HoloMe representation on another person's ship is representative of the actual person on another. That's how I would personally rectify the usage of such devices.

I would be curious to the source too, but I couldn't find any, which is why I asked you lot. Should probably have put it in the lore thread though. I think there's some compelling arguments like I mentioned, but it could very easily be completely false. I never played any elite game before this, note have I read any books however.

We'll all get back together. Nerys knows Jason, and so dose Creamy. Fortunately, Nerys can remember Jason's name and probably how to get hold of him.
I'm not aiming to separate Creamy from everyone, I'm letting the story flow as organically as I can. Creamy is feeling a bit petty and embarrassed right now.

Creamy doesn't mean to be rude, but Jason is not female enough to make an impression on Creamy

Hows that? the character of Alex is supposed to be the embodiment of contradiction, messy but hates dirt, friendly and loving but more than capable of squashing you like a bug XD
