Synthya WylderWell, it appears as if the Station Administrator's 'special order' item has finally arrived.

Somehow, I was still surprised that it was a fake account, even though I already knew.

Call it an 'Alt' account, for RP purposes only.

I have a couple of those.

Since Sappho can't be said to possess hew-mon emotions per se, but only responses which make an attempt to mimic them via a complex set of programmed algorithms combined with a 'fuzzy logic learning' process, I think that it (or should that be 'she'?) would now express a cautious & mild pleased expression.

One may only guess at this point. Sappho being only the 3rd unit of her design, after the prototype & 1st production model, but #3 is as much an extended field-test & comprehensive proof-of-concept research effort on the part of Achilles Corp. prior to their widespread release of their Sappho model to the general public.

I suppose, if one were to offer a substantial enough financial expression of interest, #4 might be available. One may suppose that just about everything has its price.

I've always loved the thought of having a robot companion in the game (but maybe for different uses). I've (hopefully) managed to create one for my character that will still fit in within the lore.

Actually, I'm surprised that hasn't happened (more frequently) before.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Sappho fits into storylines.

So far, Synthya's RP story has been written with her own in-story characters with no distinct identity.

After receiving no opprobrium from the Lore-Meisters that be, & after finding nothing contradicting in the Lore that I could see, I considered the option open to writing such a character as Sappho as a separate distinct character.

If you'll accept my comment on 1 of your logs, I'm guessing that there had to be some serious modifications to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws

Ofc, this E:D era is >1K years in the future from Asimov's era, & IMO Asimov's 3LoR seems to be more of an ideal premise than an actual working set of laws.

I do an inordinate amount of research for the sake of plausibility... & from what I've found on the topic, something as simple as, say, understanding speech, which for us seems so natural & integral, is a monumental task for a machine, & a magnitude greater for those that would be considered broad-topic conversational. Not to mention that so far at least, machines are digital & use binary code...

The devil, as they say, is in the details.

Yeah, I see totally where you're coming from. As you say, the lore isn't obvious on whether Asimov's laws are predominant within this universe.

As Panza is a robot cobbled together by a functioning alcoholic with a screwdriver and personality disorder, I think that he's probably cut corners when it comes to what is legal or permitted. This is why I'd like to see where you go, there's not much for me to see how others tackle this.

No doubt, I'll work my usual subtle twists of humor into the story & am planning on quite the adventures as Synthya learns what her new world is like >1K years from all she knew.

The general description of the station administrator's order can be found in the storyline. If needed, I can include a link to the latest chapter.

Since I write as time & opportunity presents itself, I try to include a link to each prior chapter into the next chapter & place that at the top of the page. I personally think that's a good idea as it saves the searching & helps preserve the context & continuity.

How can it be a character without being self-aware?
16 Oct 2020, 10:37pm
Yeah, I find that helps me recap on what you've wrote before... there's so many stories going on I like it as it helps me remember what you've put down before.

I really enjoy the RP on Inara. it's been the first community that's passion and competency has encouraged me to try and participate as a member of it.

Collabrative RP is new to me but I love reading other people's stories.

A good question & I'm happy to explain... the reader is OFC, self-aware, but the writer through the magic craftwork of words tries to place the reader into the subject that may not actually be self-aware itself as the character & yet the reader experiences that character & their place & progression through the story.

You recall that story of the game, "Becoming Human"? You, the player, played a domestic android which at first, was a mere machine. The game & story evolved beyond that, though...

Was I sufficient in my explanation?

A C EnderIn Elite, there's no artificial gravity at all, right? So that unless specific manoeuvres are engaged, you would be completely weightless on a ship? This is something I always struggle to remember, being so used to a constant gravity myself.

Yup, no artificial gravity, most people gloss over it with 'mag boots' or Velcro type materials throughout their ships (myself included).
It's also important to note that any object with mass also has it's own gravitational pull, bigger the object, bigger the pull.
When it comes to situations like the post I just added to Off the Station, where Rose for example had bare feet, I would try to explain this as either A: The ship or carrier is rotating slowly to generate enough gravity to suck the occupants to item's to the floor, but it would still be super light, or B: such as is the case for the carrier right now, they are within a planet's sphere of influence and with a bit of handwavium manoeuvring on the ship/carrier's orbit is close enough to generate close to 1g
17 Oct 2020, 12:19am
Yeah, without the aforementioned "handwavium" the appearance of gravity or gravity-like effects can get a bit sticky.

I would plausibly explain that the carrier would need to be expending some thrust against the gravity of a nearby celestial body, to have some effect of gravity on board the carrier & all stationary objects within it.

But Hey, 'artistic license', Hmm?
