Elite roleplay: Q&A and OOC

No matter how hard you try, you will NOT justify being a furry in Elite Dangerous

Hate to break it to you, and you will find very little support for such things. People who play ED, and especially the ones here, prefer their hard scifi. Nobody wants anthropomorphic animal land.

You might find No Man's Sky is more for you, you can catch animals like Pokemon and so much more! It's also on Game Pass just like ED. It's just more cartoony and furry friendly by far

Knightwolf 1785Kind of slow in here, huh?

I'm working on a crazy idea and want to hear what some of you think. Here it is: If someone can make a sound background story for non-human commanders in lore for Elite. Would you play as a non-human commander? Still humanoid in build of course to keep is easy for FDev.

There are no "non-human commanders" in Elite.

Well, there's one non-human option that you could get away with: A product of Achilles Corporation (meaning an Android or Gynoid)

No one ever mentions Xihe Biomorphic Companions. They are far more insidious than the Achilles Android.

We make the most realistic and exclusive animal companions using the latest technology and robotics, better than nature and guaranteed to last. Rigorous testing ensures that all our animals conform to the appropriate legislation on artificial intelligence.
— In-Game Description

This is the part that makes for lots of non-human intelligence.

The Federation faction Revolutionary Noti Values Party opened an appeal for Xihe Companions in the Noti system, in order to turn intensively-trained slaves into Master Chefs.
They planned to combine the Companions with "the latest holographic technology" in order to make brain implants for the slaves.

"By embedding this knowledge directly in a slave's brain, we can ensure total data integration and retention, which when combined with the slave's inherent culinary ability will result in unmatched gastronomic efficacy. These guys will be able to make a bacon sandwich fit for a king"
— Professor D Luffy, Lead Scientist

Gotta love the Federation's total hypocrisy when dealing with slaves.
You can bet with the ability to engineer creature companions for public consumption coupled with technology that can rewrite a mind's knowledge, they ain't just making the perfect kitten.

Androids are not pilots in Elite lore, though. Nor are they sentient.

So no, that wouldn't be a lore-friendly choice, either.

Well I do like the more friendly point out most of you have made. Those that are coming off as straight out rude can stuff it.

Now, I have lore ideas that explain these aliens. First thing! Has anyone got information on the number of Generation Ships that are not accounted for? I plan on using some of them to explain why these aliens would want to find Earth. Also why some are much more human in looks then others.

I would not dismiss this idea outright tbh. Could an android/gynoid be a pilot? Yes, I don't see why they should not be capable of flying a starship.
Can they be a member of the Pilot's Federation though? Propably not.

There is also the Relic AI that is in lore. An enemy we could run into that is part of the lore. Something FDev just never put in. In the EDRPG they have even taken over some ships to out right attack humans. Missing ships that turn up are nine times out of ten not them hiding in plain sight before attacking.

In my view, the lore-friendliness of android pilots is more of an issue of probability than it is "right or wrong" binary. While I've not run across anything in the EDRPG guides that explicitly state that androids cannot or are not pilots, pointing to such still doesn't establish a very good case for them (e.g., they also fail to explicitly state that roleplaying as Captain Kirk equipped with a PipBoy on a quest to infiltrate the Thargoid hive to rescue Princess Leah is forbidden, but any serious storyteller or roleplayer would know that it's a bad idea regardless!).

When androids are mentioned in the novels, they are presented as simple laborers who respond to basic commands. Androids are meant to automate simple tasks, not to replace humans performing more complex operations like piloting a ship. Furthermore, there isn't a single mention (that I'm aware of) of an android piloting a ship.

They are also problematic from a storytelling and roleplay point of view for those reasons. If one is going to assume the character of an android, then they will be extremely limited in the responses that they can give. There would also be the issue of: why is an android flying a ship? Is such truly a good choice for a character, or is it indulging in lore-stretching novelty for novelty's sake?

Weighing all those factors, it seems far more probable that androids do not pilot spaceships in the Elite universe.

The Docking Computer and Supercruise assist suggest some automation would be possible for an Android pilot but its very clear that any artificial sentience is universally feared and avoided.

Ai relics are described as mostly fake or fragments.

A thinking machine walking into a bar would likely be shot, burned and launched into the nearest star by system authority. Other sentient non humans don't fare well in this universe. The Thargoids are just target practice these days and a long time ago there was a species on Alioth called The Mudlarks that might have been sentient but was wiped out.

It just doesn't work. And the vast majority who normally involves themselves in ED lore won't entertain it even to amuse you. I genuinely am trying to be helpful. Because you seem very set on taking your furry persona with you here even though the community and lore do not welcome it, hoping i can guide you to either finding a new way to engage ED lore (with a new accurate character) or suggesting games where your character would actually fit

If you insist on your furry persona further I'm going to assume you're just doing it for attention. You've been told no enough now

Well I have some information here about relic AI from the EDRPG. From what I'm reading there was a rebellion before the third millennium AI was increasingly common to use self-aware and learning machines to a wide range of humanity's problems. The AI turned on humanity but a few brave souls wiped them from the computers. However before the programs were fully gone a large number of unmanned ships launched into the galaxy. So the threat is still out there. A lot of explores have run into them and were lucky to get away. Not all but enough to tell of the threat.
