Early sketch of hybrid handheld guns, upper is carbine, lower is sniper rifle (as said sooner, barrel of sniper rifle should be 20-30% longer but paper was small)

So I stopped being lazy and went back to my initial drawing to add more perspectives.

With annotations :

Without :

(I can add a space to the picture with the annotations below the drawings... if it looks too messy. I think it might...)

Ignore the bits scribbled into the front view. The square(which is the latter half, or I suppose, third, of the weapon) was initially empty, and I thought they might help in showing that it's a basic perspective drawing.

And yes, I don't have great hand writing. I generally don't keep that a secret.

Ah, that weird feeling of being a trend setter of sorts

It could be a TikTok trend. I wouldn’t feel bad about it.

And it's more fun than trying to work around the Odyssey weapons in RP, if you ask me.

In my designs is visible Guardian origin of some components? (mostly barrels)

They’re mostly distinguished by their visual appearance, so it’s hard to tell on a sketch with no colors.

My own design is purely based off of human components.

If I may provide just two essential tips when designing new weapons - make sure it works mechanically and also make sure such weapon is possible to use.

For example on the images above - the buttstock should be long enough that there is possible to shoulder the weapon and use the scope and trigger easily. Both shouldn't be too close (or too far) to the buttstock end as you need to use the trigger without twisting your hand too much and there must be a space to put your head/face there (which also assumes some kind of ergonomics of the buttstock, so the shooter will be able to take the aim). Another thing is with the magazines, assuming it's using more or less conventional ammo (which may be especially tricky with the bullpup design) - you want to have the top of the mag right below the chamber, so it can feed the ammo right into it plus the chamber needs to be in line with the barrel, obviously. Taking an inspiration from real-life weapons in these regards is never a bad thing.

Artie. Taking an inspiration from real-life weapons in these regards is never a bad thing.

I was looking at pictures of irl weapons as I was making the basic design up in my head. I might not have drawn it perfectly to scale in part due to size limitations of the paper… and somewhat simplistic at that.

The top drawing on my end is supposed to be something of a cutout viewed from the side. Not that I can tell if it is much use to determine whether that would be a practical design(it’s what I was aiming for, though). Most of it is the barrel in regards to size, anyway.

And, I guess, part of the purpose of the pictures is to serve as more of a rough visual reference to general looks.

Totally. I won't rant about how hard they suck, I promise.

I guess those fictional 34th century guns may have more fancier design due to... Whatever might be happening in that magic box that projectiles fly from. They may not have the bolt and bolt carrier running back and forth, gas system with tubes and pistons, etc. And some bells and whistles that look too complex and unreliable today, such as displays, configuration panels and so on, may already be a good, robust technology in 34th, sturdy enough to be used on a personal weapon, in the environments of various inhospitality. But not too far away from engineering common sense. Like, on a timeline, they're farther away from our 20th/21st century firearms than our firearms from the first muzzle-loaded cast iron tubes on a stick. Though, they still have to comply to common ergonomics guidelines as well, since the human anatomy haven't changed. Like, designing my thing back then, I was thinking about its possible features and the role it was meant to play on a fictional battlefield: infantry fire support weapon, similar to modern day MGs. That's why it has a bipod, that stock shape and a massive cooling system. So, another question for those designs: "will using your gun for its primary role be convenient enough?".

Yeah, there certainly may be some liberties, but still should follow some common sense like that it needs to work and it should be simple enough (the gun is still a tool, not a showcase of fancy engineering). For example (in general sci-fi terms), there can be a small teleporter at the end of the mag that will move the cartridge to the chamber in a very different part of the weapon. Although it may be technically doable in the given sci-fi setting, why would anybody want to do that.

Who in the world came up with that? (Looks almost like a slow mo camera turned into a weapon.)

And looking at the bullpup design, I’m thinking the odd tube-looking thing is where the ammo is fed into the barrel/chamber, or at least where it comes from.

Minor thing I forgot to clarify… my own weapon has a solid stock(or whatever you’d like to call it), rather than having a completely hollow center. I guess I’d have drawn it in such a way if it was meant to be, but doesn’t hurt to clarify.

It also has some cushioning at the end. Because it’s a railgun. And I don’t think you’d want that metal pushing into your shoulder at full force after firing a shot. (I haven’t seen anything saying they don’t have any recoil, so I assume they do unless told otherwise.)

If weapon weight is a concern, I allowed myself to handwave it away that in places where it would matter, suit mechanisms(or the ‘servos’, as I commonly see them called, with not much of a clue whether that is technobabble or an actual irl term) allow my character to carry it around without issue.

I dont know right name, but it was used in movie Beverly hills cop 3. And in IRL I have some experience with sport shooting so I know something about it. Today (probably) I will do sketch V 2.0 with colors and bit better designs
