Elite: Game talk

PhelboreI'll freely admit I haven't done much PVP in Elite, but there is a saying that's helped me handle defeats in other games... "The only fair fight is the one you won". Basically, people will tend to think it's fair when they won, and unfair when they lost. Those 3 ships thought it was fair, I'm sure. Humans are very good at rationalization. Now in this case? Yes, it wasn't exactly a fair fight. How would your brother have felt if they told him he wasn't worth their time and let him go? I'd take it as an insult, personally.

People who need to define themselves by subduing others are those who are not worth dealing with in the first place. This goes for PvP as well as any other aspect of this game.

Do these people pay your salary? Are they your landlords, able to kick you out if they feel like it? Do they have any impact on your life at all?

Only if you grant them that importance by your attention. Also, Open, Private Groups and Solo are only different instances of the same game. Anyone who wants to tell you that you don't belong in one and should move to another has yet again no power over you and only want to stroke their own little Egos.

And boy are there a lot of those out there!

Of course, there are other schools of thought as to how one should handle adversity other than challenging oneself to improve. Thank you for reminding us of this, Ryan.

@Cartlidge1000 was this in community goal or powers capital system? Word 'fair' can have very different variations as it's personal view only. I better suggest use different way of thinking and it's ask yourself: Why I died? This question is not based on attackers (in fact they are quite irrelevant in ED), is based on cmdr own acting. Did your brother knew where he was when that attack occurred? (related to my first sentence above), knew he about the need use H-wake?, he panicked?, how he used pips when was under fire?

This is what really counts when you play in open. Be ready and try keep head cold and think what you do when ship shakes under fire ... fingers too are shaking, what was before automated process is now going so slow and need twice as much time ... I play 2 years, you can read it again and again but without real own experience you still will panicking. Solo play or private groups play ofc are available choices, but there you really can not learn how to be better pilot and improve your reactions when unexpected things happens (and this is what Open is, game mode where really can happen unexpected things ).

Point your brother here to ask questions what he can do better, included ship specific engineering for dangerous areas, and he may in the end enjoying playing even more (this all without the need to be so called "pvp" pilot or switch out of "Open").

The perception of whether it was fair or not is completely beside the point - the fact of the matter is that in Open, these things can and will happen.

Now, here is something that is well under his control to change:

Cartlidge1000but didn't know to high wake in order to beat the mass lock.

If he has learned from this one thing, then he can credit himself with something positive coming from the encounter

Also, if you have the time, ambition, and rope, tie him to a chair and make him watch this video on a loop until his eyes bleed:

That video is ... lol .. I like it (Rinzler have more such nice videos). And now imagine how it will look with some easy "defensive" engineering, such T7 would be few more times tougher.

Cartlidge1000So, I have an genuine question that I hope can stay within the realm of civil discussion. My brother just had his first PVP experience and was rather upset by it. We figured it would be better for me to ask this since his emotions are still running high, and we didn't want it to devolve into the usual arguments.

With that being said, I wanted to ask why an individual enjoys what I'll (hesitantly) call griefing.

Again, not looking to argue, just an honest question.

Some people really just want to watch the virtual world burn.

Indeed. And that just tells you everything about their moral standards. Or lack thereof.

Not much more to add but it is a big galaxy out there and all sorts of commanders who get their kicks in different ways.
The last time it happened to me was while making a video of an interesting site. Not paying attention I was jumped by a griefer, I had no cargo, no faction, no bounty so what they got out of it I can't say. I hardly had time to close the external view before it all went black.
You can fly solo but I feel this loses some of the anticipation when running into other players. You just have to be ready to engage your fight or flight (or chat) response depending upon the encounter. Solo can feel a bit sterile.

Do you really believe this? Do you really believe that people's actions in a video game are the last word on their moral standards?

You're a joke, Murdoc.

I believe some people on internet often behave like pricks just because "they can". There is no reason or bad will behind it. The anonymity allows them to do stuff they wouldn't think of doing to someone they could actually see. And I speak from life experience here, since I was young and stupid too.
As I see it, what happens in the game stays in the game, we shouldn't take it personally.
Then again, I myself wrote a (politely sarcastic) PM to a guy who shot me for no reason (no bounty, no faction, unarmed) and caused me 20Mil credit loss, because I'm a bit hot headed :-P and because that happened like 10minutes after I finally decided to give OPEN play a try ...
Oh well ...

Guys, I specifically asked to avoid this kind of accusative finger pointing. It would be an understatement to say that I am not a fan of this particular play-style, but I came here for a civil discussion and I'd prefer it remained that way.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! I'll have him read through it all (and watch that video) as soon as he's not busy with school work.
