RyaustalI have a question about Engineers. I have been looking but cannot find the right response.

Is it better to build the next roll off of the previous roll? Meaning apply all the good ones and reroll or just reroll and discard.

Also, does it make any difference on the outcome if I build a grade 1, then use that for grade 2, and then grade 3, etc. Or just take a A rated item and go right to G5 if I can?

Gonna just point out that G5 is not always best. Overcharged power plants can run way too hot for example. Another one is mass increases or armor piercing increases being redundant. Long range is a good example of a materials problem. Grade Five long range is Cracked Industrial Firmware, Biotech Conductors, and Thermic Alloys. All hard to find stuff plus Cracked is way more useful other places (G5 PDs, drives, etc.). G4 Long Range will get you what you need and the materials are way easier to find.

Think it through, ask questions, and most importantly build the ship to you and the job.

Thanks for this I didn't know this. So far a G1 PP gives me what I need but then again I haven't unlocked alot or started engineering weapons.

I still am confused though but it seems like the answer is it doesn't matter where you start. So just to clarify, if I take a FSD and engineer a perfect roll on a G1, then take the same drive and get a perfect roll on a G2, and then repeat to a G3. Will the results be nearly the same if I were to just take an FSD and start at G3 with a rather than build up to it?

Yes, I think you are correct. To make sure we understand each other I'll say it like this:

You can just burn G1 and G2 rolls to unlock G3 and then get that perfect G3 roll. No need to apply the earlier grades.

From experience, engineering only counts against the base module. God-rolled 1,2,3 in order has the same result as a god-rolled 3.

Simon DaturaCombat logging because credits-per-hour... I just... I don't even know what to say, but that is sad.

You're more than welcome to disagree (and that's fine).

But until the reward / punishment system is balanced (i.e. Ganky McGankfuck's bounty is equal - or greater than or equal to my rebuy and they can't nuke a Sidewinder to sidestep it), you're not going to see me feel to bad when someone does it (TOS be damned). You can't possibly argue that a $7-8 mil rebuy for not being as good as someone else (vs their, what, $200k bounty?) makes any sense.

"Don't fly without a rebuy" is, and always will be, a terrible justification for being a dick. Show me another game where the cost for not being as good - or playing as long - as someone else is so poorly weighted against the less-experienced player. It would be akin to an FPS stripping you of gear every time you died in a match.

But again, I'll be humping it in Mobius until I can compete / properly defend myself.

Everyone wins.

Learn to fight. If you can't learn to fight, learn how to run. Learn what to look for and what to avoid.

It's a cutthroat galaxy out there. Treat it as such, and you'll go further than you would if you don't.

Except you. See Isaiah's comment. Elite ain't like other games, and the sooner you realize it ain't here to hold your hand and make you feel special the more joy you just might get out of it.

So... pretty much every arena shooter?

Oh, goddamnit. I knew I was missing something.

Touche.

Gonna start playing in Open now, or what?

I will admit it was a bit of a snarky example. It takes a whole lot longer to get a Conda rebuy in Elite than it does to wait for that railgun respawn.

When I get to where I want to be and my skills improve, absolutely.

Still. A good point is a good point.

Good to hear! If you have questions this is a great place for answers (snarkiness aside ).

Now, that's a good way to think about it. When the risk is outweighed by the reward, you should do it, no sooner, no later. I almost exclusively play in open. The most recent time I went to solo was embarrassing. I messed up, I lost my last Beluga rebuy. I wasn't willing to wait for it to be shipped to my destination, and I wasn't willing to chance a PC pulling me down. I was willing to risk an NPC doing it, that risk was worth the reward. As soon as I got a couple rebuys back, I was back in open, the risk wasn't too much for the reward.

Yeah. My intention isn't to sit in Mobius until I die. I'm 10-12 hours shy of my ship $$$ goal (assuming I don't part out current ship - which I don't want to) -> Then Engineers -> Then Open and help w/ CG's, etc.

My risk tolerance is low right now (in ED). Popping on Spotify, burning one down, and being THE WORST bus driver ("Oh, look at the pretty lights") is just, well, swell. And if I get to frantically waive at A REAL PERSON every once in a while, hell, it's been a good night.
