TheWandererHey gang. New user here. Love the system so far. Just wanted to say keep up the good work.

I'm an explorer by trade, and just getting myself hooked into the systems here. Where's the best place to put stupid questions? And is there a how-to introductory kind of tutorial anyplace?

For how-to's, I recommend checking out Chaoswulff's YouTube channel. Out of all the ED vloggers I've seen out there, he's the one who comes across friendliest and most accessible (IMHO anyway). You could try the official Frontier tutorial videos, but personally I find them too dry and kinda stiff.

And for questions, dumb or otherwise, you've come to the right thread

Oh sorry if I was misunderstood. How-to's on Inara.

Oh Cheers then

Maybe don't configure it all at once. Get a paper and pen and write down all the controls that you can remember off the top of your head to be important. Map those and have a go at moving from one dock to another. If there's anything "missing" jot that down and visualise another place for it. Don't get it all at once. Only put in as much as you can visualise. Eventually you'll have it all in your head and at the controls intuitively. If you put it all in at once it will be... Difficult.

SynthorianSo I just got an X-55 Rhino after using a Keyboard and Cheap Joystick setup for a whole year.

I'm sitting here thinking: "What the f**k do I do with all these buttons?"

This thing will take a while to get used to.

Lol, wait til you incorporate Voice attack, then you really have an overabundance of buttons.

RosomondWhat music do you guys listen to while playing? I am sure we all stopped listening to the game soundtrack a long time ago because we just couldn't bare to be disappointed anymore.

While I enjoy all types of music I tend toward classical low-medium volume as it does not interfere with Voice Attack. If I am on long flights I might have the news on in the background on low. What about you?

SynthorianConfiguring this beast will be a nightmare, I'll need to use my Friday off to mess around with the controls to get the best setup, and get used to using it.

But the biggest problem right now is that it doesn't fit properly on my desk, and I have to rest the throttle on my lap for it to be usable. Time for a new desk, me thinks.

Since adding a 40” monitor I lost some real estate. I went to a Logitech K830 small form backlit keyboard with tracker pad (still have mouse for back up but have never needed it) and added sliding shelves by picking up some drawer slides and cutting a shelf in half. This way, I can store HOTAS below desk and slide the shelves in when I am not gaming. I use Voice Attack and don’t really need the KYBD & M that often but nice to have for back up when ASTRA or JAZZ hiccup. With VA even the HOTAS buttons are redundant but I use them for immersive value (there is just something about ‘clicking’ lights on and off, lol). Hope this gives you some ideas for managing limited real estate. The pegs keep the HOTAS cable from jamming/rubbing on the lip of the keyboard tray preventing a short. The space in between the sliding shelves allows you to enter/exit without having to stow everything. I will also put a removable shelf across the two trays when trading heavy and use my tablet for INARA and/trade helper so I don’t have to alt-tab out of ED. Cheers.

I love the in-game soundtrack (and sound effects), and have no desire to listen to anything else.

I've taken to listening to Hutton Orbital Radio or Lave Radio in game. I used to listen to Radio Sidewinder, but there are way too many commercials.

I'm in love, I want your desk *_*

Great setup, Dekerdt, thanks for sharing. Makes my 24" monitor and Xbox 360 controller look pitiful.

Same, but with a 22" monitor...

Thanks, I'm designing a custom desk that will accommodate my multiple monitors and more room but for now it works. the sliding shelves mod was not difficult but as they say, "measure twice, cut once" lol.

Thanks. When I first started playing back 7 months ago and watching the inevitable YouTube vids I saw the guy with the 3 55" BenQ monitors and all the android tablets. I had instant monitor envy. This Christmas we got a new 55" Samsung TV and my GF snuck around and bought me a 40" Samsung TV that is now my monitor. ED on a 40" monitor is insane. I wanted to go VR but a recent eye injury has put that off a while. The whole sliding shelf deal cost <$25 US and has really been a help.

Awesome layout. That covers one issue though, the other is my g27 steering wheel, I'm a simracer also so that's yet another problem to deal with. I'm sure I can figure it out though.

That's pretty much the plan. I have been slowly keying in new functions as I play, if I needed those functions.
