Well, we have aggressive BGS war vs. cat-piss and some new game play loops which we need to explore first.

One is certain, if we do not put effort in containing the green pest the bubble may turn to ash.

I'll just say this was all too soon for me. No exp in tharg combat, hate even pirate interdiction attempts even if I kill them after submitting, not yet really gone to engineering. I'll probably go see a place thargoids have invaded with the couple of combat ready ships I have, get killed, and move other ships out towards Colonia. Of course this might not be enough. But hey, there's legacy mode to concentrate to BGS with minimal interference from pirates.

But I guess I have to try to play normally for a while, see if I won't get killed on a normal trade run with unengineered T-7 towards Hyades.

I agree one hudred percent with that...the first thatgoid mini buble is insde the main bubble we need to encircle it and pevent it from spreading. we need to get proficient at dealing with one because there is 7 more coming

i just dont see how what was adeed to the game adds up to such a heavy update..4.9 gigs total? i mean, where is the ship interiors and the onfoot thargoids.. where is the whole new gigantic grind for onfoot guardian weapons?
30 Nov 2022, 6:48am
I mean, Odyssey/4.0 is a 50GB install Vs 3.8s 20ish. You can waste a lot of space with relatively little content.

Although my theory is that in the centre of that huge cloud there'll be an on foot map to explore, but that content incl new weapon grind will be drip feed released over many months, like for the Guardian ship stuff previously.
30 Nov 2022, 7:39am
Did the install size of client 4.0 increase at all? Or did they just update assets that had already been in the game for months, waiting to be revealed?

Anyway, the impact of update 14 on the game is bigger than the impact of the initial Odyssey release. You could completely ignore the on-foot content and pretend it wasn't there, but this new stuff will affect everyone in the bubble at some point. It takes some balls to turn forum daddy's peaceful space trucking sim into a war zone like this. Soon there will be no-go areas all over the bubble. T-9 pilots will have to plot their routes carefully or pack tons of armor and cross fingers.

Interesting times. The game finally feels alive.

It does feel more alive. I was half prepared to step away from the game in case it'd be another update in the vein of U13, which to me was a damp squib, and I'm still not happy about them ignoring many long standing bugs, but U14 gives me a new set of goals ... (Al Pacino voice) "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!".

It's telling though that none of this requires Odyssey content - sensible choice from a marketing perspective given the games rep has suffered a lot recently, but also reinforces my view that Odyssey is bringing very little to the game compared to Horizons.

I have a fully upgraded set of on foot gear, and all I can use it for is roflstomp ground CZs. Nothing like what the options are on the ship side of things.

Oh, yeah. NPCs jump in to assist you with thargoids. AX CZ near starports for extra light shows and easy access to repair/refill. The ground one are very spectacular - Farragut cruiser above, all surface defense turrets skimmers and goliaths firing at the green pest.

Even if you do not plan to do combat you will need to build your ship properly to survive. And if you choose not to support AX or even oppose it you should remember one thing - Thargoid War is now controlled by BGS and eventually we can loose the entire Bubble.

It might be interesting if some of other Maelstroms arrive in system controlled by Xeno Supporters' MF.

I still don't feel like joining AX combat though. I'm not roleplaying a xeno sympathizer any more, I quit that pro-xeno squadron months ago. I'm just sort of lazy to learn all the new mechanics. But this shouldn't be misunderstood as a complaint about the new content. I appreciate that the bubble will become a more dangerous place now and that I have to watch my six even more than before. I don't know why, but playing an underdog pilot earning a few credits while flying fragile ships through danger zones really appeals to me. So I'm not going to mothball the Adder just yet. I just have to be extra careful when passing through systems that melt its shields.

I never participated in anti-xeno battles, because I had enough other things to do (raise a minor faction out of shit alone (what am I doing with my life?)) and in general, it all reminded me more of the "external enemy" rhetoric that has been used for thousands of years as a measure of intimidation, but now I cannot stand aside and will try to join in at least as a lifeguard. After all, if the Thargoids exterminate and capture the Bubble, then it will be pointless to fight for the working people (because there will be no one to fight for, lol), right?

There are some decent alternatives to combat - in fact, my Krait Phantom Hauler build (yes) will come in handy now - able to dock at damaged outposts, can be fitted for cargo and passengers, has decent jump range and most importantly is very fast so can easily outrun any Goids. It was catching dust so far as I didn't really have a use case for it, but that's changing now.

Though by the looks of things I'll spend the next few days unlocking some tech broker gear, namely the cargo rack, HRPs (Guardian and Human) and maybe the size 2 modified Plasma launcher and Shard cannon.

I'm not going to grind AX combat though unlike some others seem to already do - we'll hit the usual glass ceiling and progress will only be made when Frontier decide to unlock the next batch of content.

Meanwhile, I hope the anoraks from AXI et al don't spoil the party and let at least some of the bubble change a fair bit.

Well, Thargoid BGS have a lot of activities which contribute to the war but are not combat. Example, rescue, supply missions.

The only Thargoid state than is affected only by combat is Thargoid Controlled (and probably maelstroms).

All BGS guys near maelstrom should be aware of the new thargoid BGS states else their beloved systems can be wiped out to the extend that there is no human population and all assets including stations are dead metal mass covered with a green cloud.

EpisparhThargoid War is now controlled by BGS and eventually we can loose the entire Bubble.

This is great btw. I was worried that they would just add the Thargoids to the bubble in a procedural way, sometimes here, sometimes there, but never really advancing or retreating. Integration with the BGS adds a sense of purpose to AX combat that wasn't really there before. You basically had to roleplay it back then, but now it's real.

Cool stuff, and a pleasant surprise after such a long period of stagnation. Plus the fact that the familiar and calm Horizons 3.8 is still around for those who prefer it, with a separate commander profile even, so you can do completely different stuff in that parallel universe. What's not to like?

Didn't expect myself praising FDev tbh. But this time they really pulled it off.

It doesn't look like this. Thargoid War is part of BGS.

@Sakashiro, you can do rescue missions
