My advice: Start building ships for purpose and use them accordingly. Decide what activity you want to do next and build a ship for it. After you're done or bored just store the ship and use different one for different activity.

That's the plan, I have been mostly running multipurpose but when upgrading I do plan on for example removing several bells and whistles from my Chief to make it more outright combative

My question is mostly what I should go for for a miner/hauler (FWIW I know there's two types of mining and I'm not sure which to go for). I'm eyeing the Krait (either Krait) price range but I don't want to pull the trigger on something that's not what I'm thinking about

Now I see where engineering starts to be a real pain in the arse. :p

NedistaorIs there a way to buy/sell a maximum of some commodity? I have a Type-9 and want to buy 720 tons of gold. I have to push my mouse button on the [+] and hold... and wait...

Not sure about mouse but I just hold down the UI Right binding (right arrow for me). Initially the transfer goes slow but picks up the speed quickly, 720 t ought to be just a few seconds.

Unfortunately this hold-to-speed-up logic does not work when transferring cargo from your FC — the transfer speed stays constant. Transferring 720 t of anything to your ship is a real PITA; it may be actually faster to set the commodity to ‘sell’ then buy it from your own FC. (For transfers to your FC, the ‘Transfer all’ button works, mercifully; alas, in the other direction the button is pretty useless.)

EpisparhIt is particularly annoying if you need to transfer few billion CR from your account to your carrier.

Pro tip: When transferring funds to your FC you can just highlight the amount field and type the amount you want.

Here is my non-answer: It depends on what you want to do or enjoy doing. Try all types of mining and determine what you like best.

Surface mining - fast but common, low payout minerals
Subsurface mining - slow with a mixture of high and low payout minerals. (I find this one the most annoying)
Core mining - can be frustrating finding suitable asteroids, even in a hot zone, but the minerals tend to be more valuable (my preferred method)

As I said, I am weirdo and use a type 9 for mining. I tend to focus on core mining but have equipped the ship for all mining so I can hit targets of opportunity.
2 2B Seismic launchers
1 2B subsurface launcher
1 1D abrasion blaster
1 1D mining laser

The ship is not intended to fight. It either runs away or ejects the requested cargo if it cannot escape.

Yeah you're not the first to recommend the nine to me, but even just the hull is far enough for my price range it's at best a long term plan. (Otherwise I'd have gotten myself a Python already)

I saw the Krait II mentioned often and I can buy it stock in the short term, or (By a friend's recommendation) take a step "back", outfit an aspx for mining, and try to build up cash reserves through that for a Python or what have you

For pure hauler you can use cheap type 6 and 7. You do not need expensive ship like python/type-9 for this.

For mining you can start as low as cobra mk3 to try both types of mining then you can switch to more expensive if you like it.

Sorted from cheap to wxpensive: Asp Explorer, krait mk2, python, type 9, Anaconda or rank locked big boiz.

You cannot comprehend the pain of engineering a Type-10 for hull/ bank tank with rails and PAs.

This must be something new. At least after September 2022 as this is the last time I have transferred funds to my FC and it wasn't like you describe.

Have all the gankers left the game? The hotspots have been awfully quiet lately.

When even idiots leave the game then it's really sad. :p

None even in the CG system? Inara seems to think it’s an “Extreme” threat location in regards to player aggression but could also be piracy.

Well, 1 or 2 may be seen as 'extreme' when the baseline is 0... :p

You may be doing something "wrong", there is quite a lot of PvP activity, in average twice more than the last year (at least in regard of PvP deaths, Inara stats only, of course). Stop playing in Solo!

So, Medusas are pink, red(/black) and angry, and unreasonably tough.

At least if you’re having to deal with one in a CZ after you already took down two Basilisks and a Cyclops prior. Wasn’t quite as bad as that time I took on the Hydra within that space CZ (so no convenient rearm/repair)… but I had a lot of broken stuff on the ship following that fight. (Not broken enough to stop me from showing the single remaining Cyclops that it should probably not have stuck around, though.)

I even traveled to the starter system HIP 97950 because ShinDez is so calm these days. But yeah, the CG system might be a good place to find some trouble.

KensaiVG Got recommended core mining as something I may find fun and it seems similar enough to my basic default of "Run trades while I think of what to do" for that to still work, but wondering what to gun for if I want to go that route, especially as I do want if possible to keep the profile of "as nimble as possible" which I get conflicts with the cargo needed for trade/mining. (I don't need to go full "most efficient to a minute detail" powerplay because that's not my style, but don't want to kneecap myself either)

Maybe a python as a miner. It should be nimble enough, with enough hard points for mining and defense, and enough optionals to carry a refinery along with a modest amount of cargo.

However, this is advice coming from a weirdo that uses a Type9 to mine and who will spend inordinate amounts of time turning large rocks into small ones. With 600 tons of cargo capacity, I don't mind dropping 20tons of high value minerals if I get jumped by pirates. I can easily recoup that 20 tons by cracking open a few decent asteroids. To me, high value minerals are anything I can sell for over 500k per ton, though I'll settle for 350 if I need to.

I agree with this. I have a Python specifically built for mining (laser mining, anyway). It paid for itself fast.

Quite possibly. September 2022 was when I bought myself the FC and I did not notice it back then, either
