Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Electra System, Deep Space, The Pleiades

Claude begin broadcasting on all frequencies. I don't know if anyone will receive this transmission, I don't know if anyone back in the bubble will even care, but they're here, lots of them and we've been hit hard, space out here is littered with burnt out wrecks of human warships and our weapons? Our weapons won't even scratch them, but that's not the worst of it. The worst of it is they're collecting ejected pilots in their escape pods, I don't know why, nobody knows why but they're taking humans off with them, so if anyone is listening we need you out here, in the Pleiades. We can't fight these things, not yet anyway, but we can save our fellows from God only knows what.

"A fish tank?! Seriously?!" Bryan said looking at the first thing that caught his attention upon entering the living quarters, he was amazed the fish had survived the rough and tumble journey all the way out here. Bryan left his toolbox which he had taken a short detour on the way there to retrieve it from in front of the FSD on the bed.

He went to check to see if he could turn off the light in the fish tank. The blue glow being cast from the tank was just a little too bright and would probably keep him awake. Upon closer inspection what Bryan had initially thought was a ressed fish tank was in fact just a high definition screen that was linked to the atmospheric systems for the room. The was probably a crackling fireplace mode but bryan didnt care to look for it. He'd had enough heat for one day. He left the temperature alone because he found the coolnes of the room had already began soothing his burns from the hot interior of the vent. Some of the worse burns like the ones on his elbows which he'd been using to raise the rest of his body off of the vent surfaces started to sting from the contrast. In environments.

Bryan just turned off the screen instead of experimenting with its different modes. He crossed back over to the bed and flopped down onto it, narrowly missing banging his ankle off the toolbox he left at the bottom of the bed. Bryan immediatly began to feel the events of the day take an effect as his eyes began to close. Who knew you'd find such excitement on a luxury cruise ship. He began to wonder if he would become too accustomed to the luxury, would the Wayfarer feel like a dump once he returned, which objectivly it was but he'd found a charm to the 'rusted rustic' environment.

And with that thought, He was off.

The door to the cockpit swiftly moved aside as Leif approached it. He noticed the slight change of temperature even in his flight suit.

What a day. Few hours ago I was in the bubble, now I'm here in nowhere. Just ... while wandering through the large room, he took a look at the molten conduit. What did this guy do ... and furthermore, how did he know how to do it?

He settled the conduit in an upright position on the dashboard, let himself plummet into the seat and gave his face an intense rub which ended in a heartful yawn.

"I hope I got everything right here," he mumbled to himself as he tapped on the nav panel, plotting a jump to the next star, "and I hope the FSD doesn't let us down."

Carefully he turned the Beluga around to align with the target sun and began to slowly accelerate, keeping an eye out on the heat level. But it didn't exaggerate, instead it stayed within nominal values. He took a deep breath and pressed the button to initiate the jump.

Frameshift drive charging...
His breath quickened.

Engage.

The blue warp tunnel engulfed the vessel, lights like from a different world shined through the large canopy. On the other end it spat the ship out next to a K-class star, flooding the cockpit now with a warm orange light. Leif immediately diverted the course to a high orbit, engaging the fuel scoop.

"This will take a while," he mumbled to himself again, "I hope the FSD holds out long enough to get atleast some fuel."

The display read values around 50kg/s, despite the fuel scoop being capable of 878kg/s. He wouldn't want to risk an FSD failure too close to the sun which would fry the Moto Meli internally again.

That name is just so fitting, Leif thought to himself while waiting, Fire ship. Because it is so hot it burns. He smirked.

At about an eighth of the fuel tank refilled, he pulled the ship just outside scooping range, disengaged the supercruise and gently brought it to a stop. As he got up his gaze fell upon the conduit again. Frozen in place, Leif thought about how much heat must have passed through that object to actually melt it. Finally he snapped out of the freeze and headed for his cabin to get some rest.

An APB is broadcast on Galnet services across the Pegasi sector:

Black Omega has sued for peace with the Galactic Railroad. The following is a transcription of our agreement.

The Galactic Railroad shall take Nuen, HIP 106296, Unkto, Wongo, and Supera. They also want us to not take HIP 105192 or col 285. We will be free to expand again once they leave our space. They want us to guarantee to sell slaves after 5 years to their freedom in one of the liberated systems. They wish us to ensure no physical mistreatment shall come to them under our care, and that they shall have decent clothing and food while under ownership. We can allow this if they can concede that their "freedom fighting" cost untold lives and they basically engaged in terrorist action by making pre-emptive strikes against us without first coming to us with any amount of negotiations. They must also realise that any treatment of Archonian slaves without Black Omega space falls outside of our jurisdiction. Beyond this, it has been arranged that once they leave, they shall not return. We have also asked that they do not cause us to lose any further systems through aggressively installing their preferred factions into power in the aforementioned 5 systems they wish us to lose. We shall focus on repairing the damage done in Tjakiri whilst they focus on installing other factions in their five systems before leaving.

The article ends with a dark ambient piece of music playing as the the Black Omega motto scrolls over the screen: Freedom Sells Itself

For the sake of posterity, here is an image of our influence at the moment.
10 Oct 2017, 8:17pm
Brian woke up and his mind became alert. He didn't know what had woke him or how long he had slept, but if it had been anything like his usual sleep pattern it had only been two or three hours since he'd fallen asleep. It wasn't nearly enough sleep but if he was awake now he wasn't going to get back to sleep any time soon because of his insomnia. He closed his eyes again and lay there for a few minutes. His mind wandered and buzzed with activity. It was no use. Although he willed his mind to be quiet enough for him to fall asleep, his mind refused to quiet. Bryan opened his eyes again.

He sighed. "Whelp. Guess I'm up now."

Bryan had barely begun to sit up when flashes of pain shot through his body. "Oohf" all his bangs and bumps from earlier had stiffened up while he slept. It took a few minutes of pushing against the stiffness and pain before he managed to fully sit up on the edge of the bed. Bryan wanted to go for a hot bath to sooth the sore muscles, the only problem was he lacking a certain commodity out here in space that prevented him from having one.

While thinking of the lack of gravity bryan had noticed from the feel of the ship that they weren't moving. Maybe Leif took a break for the night?

Bryan stood amd stretched a few times to try to shake off the worst of the stiffness.
"Well guess i better find something to occupy myself for a while then. Least till im tired again."

Bryan headed off in search of something to do. He made a note to try get some data from the FSD terminal. Analytics from a jump like that might fetch a pretty penny from some RnD folks back in the bubble.
16 Oct 2017, 6:15pm
A beeping woke Leif from his sleep. Lights flashed in his room, disturbing his sleeping eyes.

"Ugh. What is it?" he moaned as he slowly sat up. After rubbing his eyes he identified the letters on the displays as intruder alert. Someone has been walking around without permission.

"Have they found us out here?" he mumbled, his gaze fixed on one screen ahead of his bed for a few more seconds.

Oh, right.

He stood up, walked over to the desk and tapped on the notepad to call up Bryan.

"Bryan? Where are you?" he asked as the call got picked up.
01 Nov 2017, 7:17pm
The beeping on Bryan's arm caught his attention. He answered and Leif's voice crackled across the comms. Bryan put two and two together and guessed what was after happening. "Sorry did I trip an alarm or something? I'm a bit of a restless sleeper so I thought I would do some work for an hour or two, just enough to tire myself out again before I try to sleep again. I thought I'd get a capture of the jump data for the trip. an FSD specialist back in the bubble might pay a handsome sum for it."

Bryan had already plugged his wrist computer into the FSD terminal and had started the data download. there was so much data from the massive jump they made earlier that it was going to take an hour to download at least. Most of the data from the big jump probably wasn't going to make sense but a specialist might be able to glean something that could project FSD technology a couple of years into the future.
01 Nov 2017, 9:48pm
"Yeah," Leif said and rubbed his face, "yeah you did. I thought that Conda followed us in record time for a second."

He picked up the notepad and headed out of his room towards the cockpit.

"While you're awake, how's the FSD looking? I made one jump and about ten minutes of cruise without malfunctions, but I'm worried we'll have some on the way towards Colonia. And my experience with that tech is rather brief."
05 Nov 2017, 6:51pm
"Hmph, wouldn't that be a terrifying conda" Bryan turned to face the soot-covered FSD which faintly glowed blue beneath the dirt.

"Yeah, I was just worrying about it myself. I only repaired the basics to get us to the next star but considering what it's just been through I'd wager that the fuel injection pins are teetering on the edge of going kaput. I'd have to take the FSD completely offline to replace them. Have you had them replaced before? I can't see where they've stocked the replacement parts. They're probably staring me in the face though and I'm not seeing them. I'll have another look before I officially declare them missing." Bryan stuck his head in the little alcove and did another scan of the cupboard for any compartments that may have been hidden by the dirt.

"To be honest, I know my way around an FSD but I've never done repairs this extensive before so unless it's an emergency I'd rather leave it to professional hands. Oh, that reminds me, I was going to send a message ahead to call in that favour I mentioned are we within range to get a message to Colonia or are we still too far out?"

Bryan found a small panel that was flush with the right wall of the cupboard almost completely hidden beneath soot. he gave it a light press and it popped out revealing a magnetic tray full of small machine and electrical pieces including the Fuel injection pins.

"Ah-ha, Found them."
05 Nov 2017, 10:48pm
"Replaced before?"

Leif stopped his walk and thought for a second.

"Not that I know of. I just ordered full check-ups after every longer journey, means about every one to two thousand lightyears," he continued as he started walking again, "so a few of them might have been replaced in the procedure. Jump count might be a bit into the first thousand. So, about shutting off the FSD..."

The cockpit doors swished open in front of Leif, and he proceeded straight to the pilot's seat, where he put the notepad down next to the molten conduit.

"That is entirely possible and if you say it's necessary for the repairs, it's necessary," he said as he manouvered through the menus, "but about that message..."

Interrupting his talk, he found the FSD and switched it off.

"I don't think ... I don't know ... erm ... how much headstart would your favour need? I'm worried our Senator has more shit at stake than what he's telling us and I just don't wanna get caught by anyone while he's still aboard. The less time they have to prepare the less ... you know?"
12 Nov 2017, 3:53pm
"Eh. I don't think she needs that much warning. It's just to give her enough time to clear her schedule so she can see us as soon as we arrive. I ferried her and her family when they were migrating to Colonia. We got on very well during the journey, her mum will probably insist we stay with them, they're that friendly" Bryan took one of the fuel injection pins from the magnetic tray and turned it over a couple of times in his hand while reminiscing about the time spent with the Khatri family, their friendly nature made quite a pleasant long haul journey, Bryan had agreed to help them migrate to Colonia back when it was first established, before pilots began to discover the neutron highway to and from the bubble, so the journey took a significantly longer time back then.

“As for the senator, I doubt Kay will even think to verify him with the authorities ‘cause she knows I do ferry people to Colonia occasionally. So it’s unlikely we’ll run into a system security inspection,... Barring any monumental fuck-ups, on our, or his part, that would draw such attention” he said.
13 Nov 2017, 9:23pm
Leif chuckled as he heard Bryan's story. "That's some lovely friends you made there. You know, I've thought about leaving the bubble and setting my home out in Colonia before. But I always found some reasons not to." He gazed out into space, put his hands behind his head and breathed slow. "I haven't got any family or real friends that are holding me back. I still feel bonded to Nirvana, even if I wasn't even born there. Ah, I don't know."

He sighed. "And even if they tried, I know how to handle this ship. How far do you think you can fix it? Do you need a hand?" he asked as he pulled himself together and got into an upright position.
14 Nov 2017, 12:15am
"Yeah, theyre definitly some of the nicest people I've ever met. I tend to find nice people anywhere i spend enough time in but ive never found myself tied down. I find that in such a big universe it can get pretty lonely so I try to make enough friends that theres always someone nearby to visit wherever I go." Bryan stopped twirling the pin momentarilly while the faces of the friends he'dhad the pleasure of meeting over the years flickered through his mind, smiling, laughing and crying through shared memories. His mind settled again on the Khatri family and a melancholic feeling washed over him as he thought about how he hadnt seen them in years. Cant exactly pop over to Colonia for a quick chat now can you.

Bryan turned back to look at the FSD. "Uh. Well I reckon I can handle it myself if you wanna work on something else, or if you wanna help out we might get it working faster. Two pairs of hands and all that."
14 Nov 2017, 9:10pm
"Well, I currently can't do what I'm usually doing, obviously," Leif said jokingly and exited the cockpit, "I'm coming over, see you in a minute."
