Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Khelan nods

"Ah'd be lyin if Ah said Ah wisnae shittin masell a wee bit. It's like Creepy Auld Uncle Albert used tae say "Everythin happens fur a reason." still Ah hidnae expectid tae get drawn back intae ma auld life. Ah honesty thought we'd go there, get ye checked oot an be oan oor merry way. An noo well Ah dunno, things ain't gonna be easy that's fur shure somethin tells me that there's gonna be a few folks that arnae gonna be too happy wi Shin's choices."

Khelan slides down in the pilots chair and puts his feet up on the command console.

"Tae be honust wi ye Ah'd rather face doon that Majestic Class Interdictor wi oanly a pulse laser than dae it but Ah cannae deny the request frae a dyin man."
25 May 2019, 6:08am
Maul chuckles.

"Damn, I don't know about that one. Staring down that Majestic Class Interdictor was probably the craziest and scariest thing I've ever experienced. It was a fucking rush though."

Maul stretches his arms and locks his fingers behind his head.

"I imagine Theodore isn't going to be too happy about Shin's choice. I'm guessing there are more folk in the Black Dragon Society who share his same beliefs towards you as well. A "gaijin" right? Fuck that. Shin said you've saved them on multiple occasions and they still disrespect you? Sounds like jealousy to me."

He smiles at Khelan.

"If they start that "gaijin" shit when you go back, we will just have to show them who is boss."
25 May 2019, 5:10pm
Khelan nods in agreement.

"It's no gonnae be easy an that's an unner statement. But hopefully Shin's blessin and wee Omi will be enough tae keep the rest of the guys in check. Plus ye know wit happened wi Theodore will get roon an the aulder wans will be tellin the younger wans stories aboot wit Ah used tae do do that shud keep them in check."

The Prid arrives out of witchspace into the lhs 20 system and Khelan sets course for Ohm City at 75% throttle.

"Dinnea want tae be daein the loop of shame" chortles Khelan as the ship hurtles through the blackness towards the station.
26 May 2019, 4:04am
Maul nods and laughs.

"Yeah, I'm all too familiar with that loop of shame. I always seem to get distracted and fly right by my destination."

He sits back up in his seat.

"I'm thinking about ditching that GPS device once we land. Maybe I can sneak into the docks and throw it into a shipping container or something. That should throw off the corporation or whoever is behind this tracker business."
26 May 2019, 12:08pm
Khelan laughs.

"You gettin distractid by somethin? That disnae sound like ye at all."

"As fur that tracker it's probably a gud idea tae get rid of it ASAP, we're gettin close tae Ray Gateway an if they are keeping an eye on ye then they'll prolly twig yer making a run fur them an go oan the warpath."

The Prid drops out of supercruise at Ohm City and Khelan flicks on the comms

" Anaconda Whisky Tango Foxtrot to Ohm City Flight control, requesting landing permission. "

" Flight Control to Anaconda Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Permission granted proceed to landing pad 25, you are clear to use Auto Landing."

"Roger that flight control, switching to auto landing."

The Prid slides through the mailslot and gently approaches the pad.

The voice of Leo fills the cockpit.

"Incoming message"

Khelan quickly checks it.

"It's frae Omi" he tells Maul. "We've tae head doon tae pad 4 aifter we land and meet wi Shin's bhoys."

"We'll head doon aifter we take care of yer tracker issue."

He gets up and heads towards the elevator at the back of the cockpit, pausing only to put his cowboy hat on.

"Lead oan Partnur!" he says
26 May 2019, 6:02pm
Maul shakes his head and laughs.

"I was starting to wonder when you were going to put that thing back on again."

He stands up and walks towards the elevator.

"The tracker is with my gear, so I'll go get it from my cabin and meet you outside."

He takes the elevator down to the habitation area to retrieve his gear. Making sure the tracker is still safe and that he has his gun this time. He then heads outside to meet Khelan at the bottom of the access elevator.

"Okay, so I was thinking about this whole "sneaking in and throwing the tracker into a shipping unit" thing and that plan is way too complicated and dangerous. I figure the easiest way to do it is to buy some cargo and let them bring it here and load it while we meet with Shin's agent. Once we get back we can dump the tracker in the cargo and sell it back to the station at a loss. Someone will inevitably purchase that same cargo unit and ship that tracker around the galaxy."

"The guys loading the cargo will undoubtedly be pissed but I figure it's the safest way to go about this without drawing attention. I know I generally have a tendency to get into some sort of trouble at every station we dock at but I'm going try not to this time. We can't afford to have the heat on us right now."

Maul looks slightly unsure of his plan.

"What do you think? After the whole "tape on the door" thing, I'm kind of second guessing myself here."
26 May 2019, 7:22pm
Khelan thinks about Maul's plan for a moment.

"Aye that cud dae the job nicely. As soon as we get back here we can dae it."

"As fur ma hat, it's perfect fur keeping ye anonymous, folk will see it but Ah guarantee ye that's all they'll remember aboot me. All they'll see is a tall bloke wi a cooboy hat an nuthin else."

He heads off the Prid towards the hanger transport system. Khelan calls the transport shuttle and punches in number 4. The doors close with an almost imperceptible whoosh and the shuttle heads towards its destination.

They arrive at their destination after a brief journey and Khelan walks up to the door. Hanger access door.

Khelan turns to Maul.

"Ah dunno aboot ye but Ah'm startin tae get a bit fed up wi all this cloak an dagger shite. Ah mean ah get that Shin likes his secrets an all but...........FUCK ME!!!"

He stops mid sentence as he steps through the door and into the hanger. His jaw agape in surprise.

Inside surrounded by a bunch of Techs in light blue coveralls sits a long, low slung ship dominated by two huge engine pods at the rear. The entire ship is painted black, so matt that it actually becomes difficult to make out the rest of the ships lines. The only splashes of colour is the mirrored red cockpit glass between the two long sponsons at the front of the ship and the name of the ship in blood red letters....

"Shinigami!" says Khelan in disbelief "Shini-fuckin-gami!"
26 May 2019, 8:48pm
Mauls eyes sparkle as he stares at the ship.

"Holy fucking fuck. It's beautiful."

He steps towards the ship and turns back to Khelan.

"I was expecting us to meet someone and get details for a new job but this...."

Maul unsheathes his new blade and points it towards Khelan and smiles.

"Wanna trade?" He says jokingly before sheathing it again and admiring the ship more.
26 May 2019, 10:05pm
Khelan stands there dumbstruck for a few moments before finally speaking.

"How the fuck has she managed this?" he asks to no-one in particular.

Khelan looks at Maul.

"Yer in the presence of a God mate, if ye were ever very naughty an Shin foond oot aboot it if ye were lucky, ye'd end up like Theodore. If ye were very very naughty then ye might notice a flickerin oan yer scanner afore Shinigami here took ye tae the next life."

A small man finally notices the two men stood just inside the door and hurries over to them.

"Gentlemen, you can't be in here, this hanger is private property!" he shouts excitedly.

"Shan't!" replies Khelan "It's gud tae see ye too Hideo."

The small man stops dead.

"Khelan???" He bursts out laughing "I never thought I'd see you again!"

He pulls Khelan into a hug before composing himself.

Khelan looks at Maul.

"Maul Montresor, meet Hideoshi Yamika oar Hideo fur short, chief engineer frae Buda Weapons an chief engineer fur Shinigami."

"Hideoshi Yamika, meet Maul Montresor. Ex barman turnt patsy, turnt kidnapper, turnt fugitive, turnt eedjit who Ah flung oot an airlock at a capital ship."

Hideo offers his hand to Maul.

"A pleasure to meet you Mr Montresor."
26 May 2019, 11:44pm
Maul smiles and shakes Hideos hand.

"Nice to meet you sir."

Maul turns back to look at the ship.

"So this is your handy work, huh? You must be one hell of an engineer. I've never seen a ship as well kept as this."

He turns back to Khelan.

"You said this ship was used to carry out swift assassinations, right? Who was her pilot?"
27 May 2019, 8:37am
Khelan and Hideo both put on expressions of practiced innocence.

"Dunno" replies Khelan "Fur obvious reasons the pilot's identity wis kept secret. We always just referred tae them as Pilot."

Khelan starts walking around the Mamba sitting on the pad, lightly trailing his fingers over part of the hull.

"New engines" he says as he gets around to the rear of the vessel

Hideo nods. "More powerful than the previous ones and engineered to give higher top speed and better manoeuvrability."

He keeps walking round looking over ship noticing the chaff launchers on the underside along with a heatsink launcher, an FSD Interdictor and the point defence turrets. He nods appreciatively.

Khelan climbs up a nearby ladder to the top of the ship and Hideo taps a couple of controls on his pad. The ships hard points deploy showing off the massive multicannon on the top of the ship with two smaller ones at the very front and two beam lasers in the middle.

"The guns have been upgraded too, we've added autoloaders to the multicannons, they'll keep firing for as long as the pilot holds the trigger down, or until they either overheat or run out of ammunition." Hideo says

"Has he been re-paintid?" Asks Khelan

Hideo smiles "I wasn't sure if you'd notice that, it's been what, two years since you last saw Shinigami? But to answer your question, yes it's a new coating I've been tinkering with. It absorbs approximately 25% more radar emissions than before meaning that Shinigami is even harder to spot on scanners."

Khelan slides down the ladder and grins

"Ah assume the jump range is still shite? How the fuck did ye get it here afore Ah goat here?"

Hideo nods "The jump range is very poor, a major drawback of the Mamba class vessel. While you were away I had the idea of stripping everything non essential out of an Anaconda modified for maximum jump range and using it as a transporter. Similar to what racing teams do with competition vessels. We arrived in system earlier today and I released Shinigami from the Anaconda and flew here myself. The rest of my team then brought the transporter to the station and joined me here. "

Khelan looks to Maul.

"Wit ye think mate? He's a belter ain't he?"

Last edit: 27 May 2019, 11:36am
28 May 2019, 6:47pm
Maul nods.

"It's quite a ship. I've never seen anything like it. I thought my engineered Krait was nice but damn."

He looks at Khelan.

"I reckon you'll make easy work of just about anyone in your path with this one."
28 May 2019, 11:01pm
Khelan smiles

"Well ye know wit a Shinigami is don't ye? It's the Japanese God of the Dead, wan who invites folk towards death. Some folk believe they're helpers, some folk call them creatures of darkness an others call them fallen angels. Make of that wit ye will. All Ah know is Ah dinnae wanna be oan the wrang side of they guns."

Khelan looks at Maul while tapping on his pad.

"Dae ye wanna head back tae the Prid an take care of yer wee issue? Ah've goat tae gie Hideo here some advice aboot his love life, starting wi takin care of that fucking thing."

He points to the thin mustache on Hideo's top lip.

"Seriously mate wit the actual fuck is that all aboot? Ye look like ye've traint a wee hairy caterpillar tae sit oan yer face!"

Before Hideo can reply Khelan turns back to Maul.

"Ah've sent the access code fur the Prid tae yer pad. Jus dae me a wee favour an dinnae get yersel intae trouble while yer daein it, Ah'll meet ye back here when yer done. Oh and Maul? Stay oota ma room a hivnae done a washin in a couple of weeks an Ah'm pretty sure that at least wan oar two pairs of socks hiv gained sentience an are probably lookin fur somethin tae eat."

Khelan turns back to Hideo.

"An wit the fuck is that aifter shave? Ah hivnae smelt anythin that bad since Creepy Auld Uncle Albert hid a dodgy curry an goat explosive diarrhea!"
29 May 2019, 12:05am
Maul laughs at Khelan ribbing Hideo.

"Yep, I'll just go do this. Shouldn't take too long."

Maul leaves the hanger and goes back to the Prid.

He stops at the access elevator and reads the access code.

"Seriously?..."

He clears his throat.

"Um...little pig, little pig, let me in."

"Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!" Leo responds.

"Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down."

The doors open.

"Welcome back Maul."

"Well that was fucking weird, at least it works." He says with a shrug as he steps inside the elevator.

Once up top he enters the cockpit and sits down in the pilots seat. Holo screens pop up around him and he begins looking through the commodities.

"Hmm, a unit of robotics would probably do just fine." He says to himself.

"Hey Leo, could you have a unit of robotics sent to the ship and take the credits out of my account."

"At once, sir."

Maul smiles as his pad chirps letting him know of the purchase.

"Sweet, how long till it gets here?"

"The cargo you ordered will be arriving in 15 minutes."

Maul leans back and props his feet up on the console.

"I could get used to this."

"Hey Leo, I have an A.I. back home in my apartment. She's a sweetheart, maybe I could hook you two up." He says jokingly.

Leo remains silent.

Maul laughs and decides to rest his eyes while waiting on the cargo to be delivered.

15 minutes pass.

"Cargo has been secured in the cargo hold." Leo says, as Maul jolts awake.

"Ughh....thanks, Leo." He says as he stretches before quickly going to the cargo hold.

The doors slide open revealing a single unit sitting alone. Maul runs over and opens it to reveal its contents. It's full of random robotic parts, the perfect place to hide a tracker. He tosses it inside and closes it back.

"Hey Leo, let's sell this back. I "accidentally" ordered the wrong thing." Maul says with a smirk.

"Acknowledged, sir."

After a few moments the cargo door opens again revealing a group of very grumpy dock workers.

"Sorry fellas, I got a little tipsy and ordered the wrong thing. Hey Leo, transfer 50,000 credits to each of these guys for the inconvenience." Maul says with a smile as the dock workers remove the cargo from the ship.

The cargo doors close and Maul heads back to the access elevator.

"Thanks for the help Leo." He says as he steps out of the elevator and checks the tracker signal to make sure it was still working.

He smiles proudly as he walks back to meet Khelan and Hideo at pad 4.
29 May 2019, 8:39am
Hanger 4 is deserted apart from the matt black Mamba and a single figure dressed in a black flight suit adorned with a snarling winged wolfs head on the shoulder. The figure is wearing a customised remlock helmet with the visor blacked out totally obscuring their identity.

As Maul approaches the figure speaks. Their voice highly distorted by circuitry built into the helmet.

"Mr Montresor, I was told to expect you. Are you ready to go?"

The figure taps a button on their wrist mounted pad.

"Please enter access authorisation" comes a female voice from the pad.

"My name is ruin, my name is vengeance, My name is no one, no one is calling." responds the figure and the access hatch for the ship pops open.
