Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Amata nodded. "You're right, but we won't be of much help to him if we arrive there starving and deprived of some much needed sleep. After all that has happened back on the station we really need to recharge our batteries."

Amata smirked as she saw Nerys blushing, then began to put some stew and potatoes onto her plate. "Let me guess: That was your favourite patient? What did he say?"

"I saw that the shooting has started", he said as he looked at her over the top of his glass.

"Same story as always I suspect, some overpaid admiral making a decision with no thought for the consequences. They say one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, so it makes me wonder who the antagonists really are, and whether the Imps want resolution or just to impose their own ideology. If it's the latter it makes them worse than the Marlinists. Either way the Feds look like they're caught in a fight that was never theirs to begin with."

He set his glass back down and stretched out his legs.

"Frankly I'm glad I'm an independent and that we're a long way from the warzone. Wouldn't want to have to pick a side on this one"

"Well yes, the Galaxy  is big enough to avoid the fighting." Descartes replied. "But the Empire, any empire that tries to justify slavery is surly not worth considering as on the side of justice - buying and selling people is just wrong, however it's dressed up."

"I think we should be more concerned with the Thargdoids in the Coalsack nebula. They're a threat to all of us."

She put her hand on his arm. "But let's eat. I'm having stir-fried vegetables in hoisin sauce, with rice noodles. Supposedly fresh!"

She asked for, and they were shown to the reserved table. It was narrow, they had to sit side-by-side with their backs against the wall.  It gave them a good view of everyone else - coming or going, talking, arguing, drinking to remember or forget. It also forced them to sit very close together, they would knock elbows trying to eat!. She could feel his warmth. He smelt fresh, good, comfortable.

"This is very cosy." she said, turning to face him "I hope I don't slurp when I eat." She nudged him with her shoulder, laughing

He glanced at the menu and ordered the same, it sounded good.

"Makes you think, doesn't it?" he said, turning to face her once more.

"All these people have a story, and only they know what it is. Everyone else can only guess"

He grinned at her once more.

"I wonder what they're guessing our story is."

He reached up and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

Descartes was beginning to come to the conclusion that she wasn't very good at being relaxed on holiday, maybe not very good company. She wondered if Raglan was enjoying himself or just being polite. 'He's a really nice guy but probably restless, wanting to fight or F.... make love.' She was hopeless at the first, out of practice at the second and desperately wanting Raglan to be a long term friend.

"Do you think all these people are on holiday?" she asked. "I don't know about you - I'm doing 'holiday stuff' most of the time. Relaxing for weeks on end out there between short bursts of activity. Listening to music, reading, seeing the sights. "What do you think? Have you done any long trips. I did a round trip to Colonia."

'I could have used your company out there' she thought, blushing at some of her fantasies.
15 Nov 2020, 3:33am
"Some are on holiday, others probably just passing through"

He considered his answers carefully.

"It's a big galaxy and everyone has to stop somewhere on their travels through it. I can relax on board my ship, don't need to be docked to read or listen to music. Right now my life is one long trip, and I've earned a few days off."

It was true. He had travelled almost non-stop for months running data missions and honking systems with very few days off.

Sure, he had seen some interesting sights and met a few interesting people along the way, but had never stayed long enough to really be able to call any of them friends. He missed true friendship, the kind he'd had at the academy.

Sensing some uncertainty on her part, he looked into her eyes.

"Just remember, I could have gone back to my ship after that episode in the bar, or even after a good night's rest. I enjoy your company, I like you, and I want to be here. Nothing is going to happen between us unless we both want it to."

he gently tapped the tip of her nose.

"Now, let's eat this wonderful looking meal!"

Amata Lirein
Amata smirked as she saw Nerys blushing, then began to put some stew and potatoes onto her plate. "Let me guess: That was your favourite patient? What did he say?"

Nerys lowered her eyes. "He will not come to the rendezvous" she answered. "But this does not matter now. As you said, I need to recover my energies a bit, otherwise I'll hit the floor with my face. But I suppose you'll need your bed, so, could you please tell me where I can find a couch or even simply a chair? I am used to sleep more or less everywhere."
17 Nov 2020, 12:22am
Amata tilted her head, thinking to herself. Odd. That guys seemed to be quite eager to see her again earlier. What changed?

She nodded at Nerys. "I will indeed need my bed, but..." she began before turning her attention towards Jason. "I guess you'd like to return to the cockpit after having eaten yourself to make a few calls in private? If so the good doctor could use the crew quarters' bunk until I've taken a nap and can relieve you. Once we reach the carrier she definetly needs to be the most rested of us after all."

She then took a bite out of her food while waiting for a response.

Lambast Mercy
Cat was busy checking the date and trying to remember Kaislas’ birthday. Kai had talked about an Imp friend with hair as white as her own many times while they were together.

“Nar, not that one Rodders. Let everyone know she's off-limits, I’ll deal wiv ‘er mi-self”

Having been set on his task of finding Kai and returning her in time for the party, on Lamb's orders, Echo messaged Silas, only to find that they were already keeping an eye on her.

Being as she was in good hands, he figured he should go back and find Lamb to see if he could help her with any other preparations. However, when he arrived at The Hand, the hangar was empty. Lamb must not have been back yet.

"Naomi? You there? I'm at The Hand, but its locked up."
"Oh, hi Echo!" she replied, "Yeah, I'm still on the Arbiter with Leith."

Right... he had forgotten. He thanked her and stood there for a minute trying to decide what the most useful thing he could do would be. Ultimately, he settled on 'lunch', and wandered down to the commerce district to try and find a food court. After some chat with the locals and blending in, (he was still on the job, after all), he visited what was, supposedly, the best sandwich shop on the station, although he suspected they'd all say that if you were to ask them. He sat down with his food at a table outside the shop, which was across the street from some kind of clothing bazaar and a seedy bar with a large bouncer guarding the door. As good a place as any for people watching, he thought to himself.

"Them tats of yours... pretty recognizable here in the criminal underworld, yeah?"

"I mean... yeah I guess." Raven said, "but we wiped out all of them but me."

"Uh huh," Silas replied, "but they don't know that. Say, you up for a little ruse? Some subversion? Espionage? Probably a barfight?"

Raven said nothing, but began rolling up his sleeves with a sigh.

"You OK, Raven?" Silas asked

Raven simply nodded, with a serious look on his face. He was psyching himself up, getting in character. He didn't like having to step back into that persona, but sometimes it was necessary, and this was one of those times. If not for Kaisla's sake, then for the sake of avoiding Lamb's nuclear rage if her party plans were not adhered to. Frankly, Raven feared upsetting Lamb more than he disliked playing a hardened criminal on TV.

The pair walked with purpose up to the unassuming building, purposely ignoring the guard and reaching for the door handle.

"Hey!" The burly blonde reached out his hand. He was built like a surfer, with the hair to match, in spite of the fact that the man had probably never seen an ocean. In fact, he smelled like he'd never even been wet.
"What the hell do you think you're doing!? Disappear, or I'll make you disappear."

"Funny you should ask. I'm here for your job, shit-stain." Raven said, with the stone-cold face of a man on the edge.

The guard allowed a slight raised eyebrow.

"...I imagine when I walk through those doors and hand your head to your boss, he won't argue that I'm the best person to fill his newfound vacancy."

The raised eyebrow turned into a scowl, and the guard cracked his knuckles.
He and Raven sized each other up, staring. A stand-off of sorts, while Silas stood, cross-armed and cool as a cucumber waiting for things to get spicy.

The tension was cut by the intercom crackling to life.

"Kyle... let him through." came the voice on the intercom. Kyle's face changed, slightly, but enough to tell Silas that the voice on the intercom was the one in charge.

He pulled the door open, but his scowl remained, and his eye contact with Raven remained unbroken. That is, until Raven winked at him, smirked under his cold browline and quipped "call me". Silas saw Kyle's hand twitch, as if he almost instinctively drew a weapon before catching himself.

Inside, a man in a crushed velvet suit that probably cost more than the Arbiter sat behind the bar, and beckoned them to sit, already pouring three glasses. Raven locked gaze on him and made a b-line, with Silas entering more slowly and checking corners. Two guards by the entrance and another by the side of the bar.

The guards moved to pat Raven down, but was ignored. He went to grab Raven but was stopped with a sound and a look from the man in the suit. Silas noted that the man must know they were armed, and was unconcerned. He would now be on the lookout for evidence of what this man's ace-up-the-sleeve might be.

Raven sat down, not saying a word, and brought the glass he was offered to his lips without breaking his eye contact with the man. Silas moved the stool out of the way to lean on the bar, back to the bar so he could face the entrances but still turn his head to be a part of the discussion.

"Do you know why you're alive?" Said the man.
"It's because I recognize those tattoos of yours."

"I don't believe you." Said Raven,

"Oh, and why is that?" replied the man.

"Because if you recognized these tattoos, you'd know it is the reason you are still alive."

The man simply chuckled, and took a sip from his drink.
"Well then... let's talk business, shall we?"

Some people just look like trouble.

Descartes looked up as two men made their way to the bar. Two bruisers appeared from nowhere as if to check them down, but  stopped short. The whole scene made her feel uncomfortable.

Returning to the food. "You're right, looks good and tastes delicious." She said to Raglan,  laughing as she sucked a stray noodle into her mouth and licking her lips. " I just need practice eating!"

She dabbed at her chin."  was thinking of hauling goods to the Coalsack, helping the cause, but looks like they don't need much now,  just so-called bounty-hunters, and that's not me. I never was tempted to kill. Let's face it, hunting means killing. No-one sets out to capture and return the 'bounties' to face trial." She turned to him. "What do you think, ever done it?"

Jason chased a bit of food around his plate with a fork for a moment before he looked up at Amata to respond. There was a liquid shine in his eyes, and he blinked to clear them.

"I think that arrangement would work, yeah. Thank you."

He turned to Nerys. "You of all people should know of the importance of rest, Doctor." He said it without acid and smiled a little. Even if he was struggling, he could still support others.
18 Nov 2020, 7:29pm
Raglan savoured the taste of the food as he considered her question.

Was she asking him if he was capable of killing?

"I've done a little 'assisting the authorities' a few times. Never delivered the final shot but anyone I fired at was a wanted person"

He remembered the combat training at the academy, and could hear his instructor's voice in his head.
<sometimes you need to defend yourself, and sometimes you need to defend others>

"The way I see it, if I help take down a known cdon't dieriminal I'm doing every innocent pilot a service"

He took a sip of his drink and carried on

"What you have to remember is that most of those guys just go straight into an escape pod as soon as their ship looks doomed anyway, so they just go and get another ship. For them it's an occupational hazard and a slight inconvenience."
19 Nov 2020, 7:23pm
"I guess you have a point." Descartes replied "I suppose you have to trust the people who decide that the quarry is a criminal. The real problem is that there is no punishment for being a criminal."

She pressed closer to him. "What if you get killed, for example, you just get the same treatment as the criminal - lose your ship, escape in a pod, and like the criminal, get yourself a replacement ship."

"I think I'll break a habit and have a drink, I'm not flying for a few days - what would you recommend?"

She didn't mention that she could consume prodigious amount of alcohol with no effect on her.
20 Nov 2020, 2:26pm
Rex ordered two shots of his favourite Lavian Brandy for them.

"There is a slight difference if I lose my ship", he responded, wondering if she was actually talking about him personally or bounty hunters generally.

"I get a replacement just like they do, sure, but I only lose a ship. They lose reputation in the circles they move in. Imagine being the guy that was taken out by a kid in a sidewinder.", he smiled at the thought.

"Not sure what is the worst thing to lose there, your ship and any cargo you stole, or respect from other criminals"

The drinks arrived.

"Try this Descartes, I think you'll like it"
