Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

That earned Creamy a four tailed thumping as rain rolled her eyes. "I'd like to stay, but I'm still worried if they have a ship out there waiting." She said happy to have so many people like her for what she is. Rain smirked liking the dark-haired guy that was tripping over himself too. "Well, it's not like they'd really be that set on grabbing you for whatever reason." She hugged Creamy. "You stay safe you goof ball." The Kitsune said before walking off the young man and striking up some small talk to help him out.

"She's a one to watch Cream" said Benny, "and I'll keep my eye on her for you. Any of those fools show up here, I'll deal. Ya dig"

"I have indeed managed to excavated the implication form that less then vailed threat Benny. Thank you"

"Haha, excavated the implication! Dude you slay me. Stay safe my friend" Hands clasped between their chests, Creamy and Benny executed an incredibly masculine bro-hug.

A few paparazzi were hanging around trying to see who was leaving with who. Creamy made sure to mention that Rain was just an acquaintance and he was not put-out that she wasn't leaving the party with him; in fact, he wished her well. Anyone that had been following Creamy for at least a week would know he was a brief encounter specialist. Hopefully, they would think Rain was just another 'something for the arm' and not worth interrogation.

It was a relief to get back to his ship, Creamy opened the footlocker by the boarding ramp and dropped his clothes from the hotel in there to sort out later. Stretching he called out to his digital PA.

"Ninette darling, I'm home"

The modified COVAS didn't answer. Creamy shrugged and decided to sort it out once he was sat at the stick. All he wanted to do was get to the nearest 'off the beaten track' system, put the Knickerdropperglory into a loop for a bit of false gravity, and sleep in his amazingly comfortable bed.

Before Creamy sat down, he saw a gun sitting next to the throttle. On it was a gray plastic card embossed with a few lines of metallic cyan writing. Smiling, Creamy picked up the card and read it.

Keep yourself safe my darling. Love foxy

Tucking the card away, Creamy picked up the gun. As soon as the lanyard that was tied around the throttle tightened, the charge-pack electrically emptied the weapons energy cell into Creamy. Belladonna stepped out from her hiding place and whacked Creamy in the head with a lead-filled leather cosh. Creamy still convulsing, tried to tell the woman to stop that, but his jaw was tightly clenched. Bell hit him again and Creamy toppled like a tree lading face down on the deck.

Bell cuffed Creamys' hands behind his back and rolled him over stroking his prominent cheekbone and his strong square jaw.

"It's a good thing you're pretty because you sure ain't smart" said Bell to her recumbent hostage before filling his mouth with a gag.

She propped Creamy up under the command console and cuffed his hands around that. She wasn't taking any chances whit this one, she wanted to keep an eye on him while they flew in case he tried something. After satisfying herself that Creamys' dangerous legs couldn't reach her should he try kicking from there, Bell took off and left Irrational Exsubrance behind. Once she had engaged supercruise, Bell contacted the Anansi.

"Belive your eyes Bosun, this is Bell onboard Creamys' ship. I got the target sleeping soundly bound at my feet. Tell Vengerfield I live to serve and I request this ship as my own" She turned off the com not wishing to spoil her moment. Looking at Creamy again Belladonna sighed.

"Its a shame Vengerfield is going to ruin you, I'd like to have used you up first pretty boy"

Made it to my first Guardian beacon. The stories are TRUE! When I got close to the structure it seamed to open and pushed out these beacons. Thankfully CMDR BOB Wallace knew you had to shoot them and what happened next blew me away! The whole structure light up and opened to this glowing orb. I had seen something like this before at a Guardian Site, so I switched to my Sanner and took a reading. My God I felt small in the remnants of a powerfully advanced space faring civilization. On to this site that just popped up in my message log. Wish me luck commanders and stay safe in the black!

Just blinks hearing the message. "Wow. Somebody had been hitting the coffee hard."

Footsteps stirred Creamy from his meditation, it was feeding time again. It was also time to have what he called his ‘movements tub’ changed. He was grateful that there was enough gravity to stop the contents from floating, but he still wished his tub had a lid.

Creamy stood up, the metal floor cold on his bare feet as he walked the few steps towards the door. He carefully lifted the dreaded tub towards the draw in the bottom of the metal door. Standing back from the tub, he drank the last sip of water from the bottle he had been given yesterday and put that on the floor too, and waited.

“Slide, click grind clunk” he said to himself in time with the noises from the other side of the door. “Good day to you. What flavour have you blessed me with? I do hope its meat number six”

As usual, there was no answer while his captor put the new tub into the draw and pushed it into Creamys’ long narrow windowless cell. Quickly, Creamy took the tub out and carefully put the used one in the draw with the empty bottle beside it. He hadn’t been quick enough on the first two days, and he had to put up with the smell; he didn’t get a replacement bottle of water either.

The draw was pulled back, locks were slid back into place and the footsteps started to retreat.

“Thank you, have a good day. . . Tosser

Inside the tub were the same items he’d received each day as long as he put the used tub back in the draw. It held a two-liter bottle of water, a large paste ration pack in tough foil, and a strip of five sheets of toilet paper.

Leaving the tub by the door, Creamy took his food and drink to the other end of the room that he strongly suspected was a container and sat down on the folded blanket atop the padded mat he slept on and read the foil pack.

“Nutri-Paste, chicken. Well yum yum. Two thousand calories though, not bad. I can afford to stretch and do some exercises today. Lucky lucky me”

After opening the corner of the pack and squeezing a generous blob of paste into his mouth, Creamy reflected this wasn’t the worst kidnapping he’d endured. He was, if the time between visits he received from the tub person represented a standard day, entering his second week as a prisoner. As far as he knew, he had paid his ransom insurance in full, so the implant should be working. He couldn’t remember where he had it injected, and hadn’t felt a lump anywhere. Creamy also hadn’t found a cut of any kind to make him think it had been removed. Stroking his short soft beard, Creamy sucked on the paste in his mouth making it last.

Time was running out fast; soon the Python would be landing and Dyson would have to explain to Vengerfield why he hadn’t cracked the covas from Creamys' ship. The Ninette program and covas were locked away behind a defence program called D'If; a custom defence that was more like a fortress than a firewall.

Orders had come from the Bosun that no one was to talk to Creamy but Dyson was desperate, he had to get past the covas security before they landed. The only way in was the password and Creamy could give it to him. Between jumps, Dyson floated down to the cargo bay with his laptop and the covas core in hand.

The container Creamy was locked in sat alone, away from the supplies and trade goods. Once Dyson had grabbed hold of Creamys’ mobile cell, he activated his mag-boots then let the covas and computer maglock to the cell. Rapping on the wall, Dyson shouted through the vent in the door.

“Oi, how do I get past diff?”
03 May 2021, 11:57am
A voice! All the bumping and motion this morning had told Creamy enough for him to know his room had been loaded onto a ship, and that ship had done a lot of jumping, but no one had talked to Creamy in about a week. Creamy was grateful he’d been given a lid with his movements tub today and now someone was talking to him.

“Um, I don’t know. Are you asking for help with a crossword? Look it’s not my thing, but if you pop the quiz into the draw I’ll have a crack at it. It’s nice to have a little natter isn’t it, I take it you know who I am, but who do I have the pleasure of addressing?” said Creamy barely slowing enough to slip a little punctuation into his stream of consciousness.
03 May 2021, 2:02pm
“I’m not looking to make friends dick head. Diff. Diff, it’s all that’s left of your damned ship computer. Now give me access”

Punching the door resulted in a satisfying clang as the door rattled. Dyson was just glad the prisoner couldn’t see him float off because the force of the blow was enough to disconnect his mag-boots from the floor.
03 May 2021, 5:44pm
"I don't think so old bean, my covas is called Ninette. Diff sounds like a computer a person that is at home with saying 'Yo' would own don'ch ya think?"

Creamy wasn't entirely sure this man knew how ransoming a prisoner should go. Menacing his cell while demanding access to someone else's computer wasn't going to get things moving at all, and after a week of no human contact, Creamy was getting desperate for release. This guy could very well be why Creamy was still locked in a box instead of being left somewhere gagged and tied up for the authorities to find. There would be no harm in helping things along a little; after all, Creamy had a maiden voyage show to host in about a week.

"Anyway, my accounts are practically empty. Been spending credits left and right setting up this bloody show. Listen, I'm insured for ransom demands Don'ch know? I believe the company is called Sovereign Shield"

Silence rained on the other side of the cell door.

"Just show the closest authorities proof of my capture and make your demands. Stick to ya guns and don't take any of their rot; they are an insurance company and will do everything they can to weasel out of paying. If we work together, I'll see to it you get your credits old boy"

Thade was right; dumbfounded was the perfect description of how Dyson was feeling after just a short conversation with Creamy. For a moment, Dyson forgot why he’d come down to talk with the prisoner.

He’d come to demand the password for the covas, and somehow it had turned into Creamy offering to teach Dyson how to pirate. What was worse, Dyson was tempted to find out how this ‘ransom insurance’ thing worked. He was once again reminded of why Vodan tended to leave him out of direct conflicts, Dyson just wasn’t good a dealing with ‘victims’ beyond firing at them from his ship.

“How many times have you been kidna.. No no, it IS your covas Ninette. It has a defence program called Diff and requires a password. If you give it to me, I’ll see about getting you something to read and maybe some better food”

“It does?” Asked Creamy still high on having someone to talk to “Didn’t know about that lil feature; I’m just the chap that makes requests and Ninette for fills them for me. She really is a godsend”

Creamy wrapped the blanket around himself and pushed the tub back to the floor. The lid was a nice addition but he didn’t trust it to stay on the tub if it bumped off the walls and ceiling too many times, and floating around a metal container in just his undershirt and briefs was chilly.

“I’m no good with passwords, that’s another one of the things Ninette takes care of for me. When I need one, she sorts it out or sends it to my slate. Everyone should have a PA program. In-Value-Able don’ch know”
04 May 2021, 10:45am
Un-fucking-believable more like thought Dyson.
“So you let your covas keep your passwords, and you need your covas to tell you the password if it goes into security mode. You know how amazingly dumb sounds right?” asked Dyson finely returning to the deck after bouncing off the cargo bay ceiling.

“Well, it never came up. Didn’t even know Ninette had a security mode what?” came the muffled reply from inside the container.

Memories of the few interactions he’d had with Creamy came to mind. The man was definitely not the brightest star in the sky and he always displayed the interminable happy-go-lucky good nature of the blissfully ignorant.

Dyson picked up his computer and the covas core, disengaged his mag boots, and floated away. He had one more jump to figure out the password before they would be arriving in the Lozin system where Vengerfield was waiting for a report on Dysons findings.
04 May 2021, 12:44pm
The shuddering crack of dropping out of Witchspace subsided and Dyson, now in the bunk room, opened his laptop and got back to attacking the stubborn covas. He’d managed to work out that the system sent large packs of data to the Pilots Federation every time it entered or left a station as any unaltered covas should, but it also sent large data bursts when it was close enough to nav-beacon.

If Dyson could check the log files of a nav-beacon Creamy had flown by in his ship recently, there was a chance of backtracking Creamys’ movements. Unfortunately, that would require Dyson got into the Pilot Federation database. That would be just as impossible as hacking the banks’ systems.

Counting the pixels in the one word on the screen was not helping at all and the command prompt blinking felt like the covas personally taunting him. Looking for D’if had turned up nothing helpful no matter what area of the interstellar network Dyson had searched.

Rubbing the sides of his head, Dyson leaned back and resigned himself to not being able to crack the covas. He had to come up with something to offer Vengerfield, a detailed explanation of how hacking works and the impossibility of guessing a password wouldn’t go down very well at all. The least he could do was see if he could get some credits out of this Sovereign Shield insurance company.

The ship slowed, and the Atmospheric Flight warning sounded while Dyson researched Sovereign Shield ransom coverage. It seemed this company made its money insuring the children of important or high social ranking Imperials. Reading a little Imperial history showed that applying political pressure via stealing each other’s children was very common in Imperial politics. As the Python descended towards the landing pad, Dyson was looking at the packages available and learning about what protection and recovery services Sovereign Shield offered.

“Oh crap!”

Quickly, Dyson unbuckled himself, grabbed his signal detector, and ran out bunk room. On his way to the cargo hold, Dyson called the pilot.

“Kill the coms NOW. The prisoner has a tracker sending a blip through our own fucking communications”

Proceeding from Docks

Her "hmmm!", said with a slightly pleased tone, was barely hearable in the engine roar. Ina was sitting in the co-pilot seat, looking how station interior view was blurred by a decent acceleration. She was completely sure by now that this ship is full of surprises, seeing how fast this Keelback is making its way through the station, leaving the airlock and finally getting into the open. Her eyes quickly adapted to the familiar environment of space darkness and blinking indicators, and she saw the panorama of Milky Way with stars scattered all over the dark void. Only those who fly can state surely that stars are closer to you when you see them through the cockpit glass, not a station window.

She even was smiling softly looking at this.

Then, when the hyperjump tunnel finished forming around the ship, she heard that JB started speaking to her.

Ina's smile faded out and then she said, still looking forward through the glass, "Well, assuming that you know my name. Was able to know somehow. That droid perhaps. Okay. Breaking stuff. Making smoking holes in stuff. Making stuff explode. I can do it on foot as well".

Then she paused for a second and proceeded more slowly. "So... I'm curious now... You know, haste is a synonym for a bad planning... And also you like to turn your back to armed people... And you wanted to see me here, not anybody else...", she turned her head, looking at JB, "Why?!"

“Kill the coms NOW. The prisoner has a tracker sending a blip through our own fucking communications”

It had been an interesting day; well, compared to recent days getting a lid on his movements tub was interesting. Creamy adjusted his chain of thought back to his time on Irrational Exuberance to remind himself being kept in a box was not normal.

Recently, he had been moved to a ship and that ship was now landing on a planet. After about a week of nothing, all this action had to mean something. The unmistakable feeling of entering an atmosphere followed by the soft ripping sound as whatever craft he was on was gliding down to the surface gave Creamy hope. Once they got to where ever they were going, something had to happen.

At the very least, Creamy would be questioned and he was under no illusion that the questions would not be about the Doctor. He hadn’t even had a note in his inbox from any of the people that had helped Nerys escape to let him know that Nerys was safe, or even alive.

The sound of someone running towards Creamys’ cell brought him back to the moment. Right now Creamy was keeping the movements tub still fearing the landing would send his by-product all over his cell and he really wasn’t in the mood to fight anyone while covered in double processed meat paste.

While the ship landed, there was plenty of noise outside the cell but no one was unbolting the door so an ambush and dash for the cockpit wasn’t going to be an option anyway. All of a sudden, the busyness outside the cell stopped. Creamy pressed his ear to the vent in the door to listen.
