Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vodan zipped his fur trimmed coat all the way up staying face to face with the man on the pad. Damn it was cold out here. A little sympathy snuck its way in between Vodans’ distaste for unwanted visitors. He couldn’t count the times a seemingly pointless order had come down from on high with the ever present pre-set of ‘get it done, no excuses’ while the man giving the orders sits in the very lap of luxury creaming the rewards of everyone else’s work.

“Alright, change ya mix for two point five standard pressures and don’t undo ya suit once your inside or you’ll have to decompress for a few hours. That and patching this place up was a rush job so we’re not one hundred percent that it’s not gonna blowout”

Vodan turned and gestured for the pair to follow. Tapping out orders on his wrist computer, docking clamps engaged on the skip-like-ship and the stations only pair of turrets turned to face the pad as well. He was sympathetic to the guys’ position; it didn’t mean he trusted him. Playing tour guide, Vodan walked his visitors the long way around to the barracks. If he had to be out here shrinking his dick, the other two could bloody well freeze their balls off too.

“Took us the best part of the week to get this place usable and set up to support a staff. Can’t really tell what it was before we sorted it out, but it’s not that old so getting the systems back online was at least easy enough. We’ll start with the barracks as the lads are up and about now thanks to you”

That reminded him, the day shift could stand down and get back to sleep. He changed from open coms to his command channel to have Thade sort that out before switching back to open.

“So your partner?” asked Vodan looking over his shoulder “Isn’t on open coms or just being the silent body guard type?”

Ina was trying to keep in mind as much detail as she can, looking at these shabby-looking buildings.

"What it was before?.. No idea. But definitely they have only the main building systems up and running. And... this one is a strange thing... It's not a building..."

Some strange construction attracted her attention. It wasn't visible from the landing pad area, you had to walk your way around the main building to see it. It was relatively small and looked new, in contrast with the rest of old outpost buildings, connected with main building with L-shaped corridor, and there was literally a cargo container attached to its side, and it was done in the airtight way. And for some reason this metal box had even a small life support unit placed at the top of it, and, judging by the indication lights, it was on. So, it could contain people inside.

"This one looks odd... They have a big building at their disposal to place everyone inside, why do they need this... Box? There's no explanation other than 'to keep people there against their will'. Doubt these people are up to building separated smoking areas. Have to check that one, once we're inside."

"...Hmmm?", Ina heard Vodan's words over the open comm channel, "Yeah. I don't talk much in general."

“You’re a woman!” Blurted out Vodan before he could stop himself “Spank a rat, they grow um big where you come from”

Placing his hand on the airlock control for the living quarters, Vodan stopped to reiterate the pressure change his visitors were going to experience.

“Watch ya mix from your tanks, it should auto compensate and your pressure suit will protect you coz two point five ain’t that much difference. But if you equalise and open your suit at all, you’re looking at a few hours to get back to galactic standard pressure. You won’t suffer much pressure sickness if you brute force it, but it won’t be fun and in some cases, it could kill. Ready?”

Vodan opened the air lock and waited.
11 May 2021, 11:48am
"Strange you hadn't noticed it before. There's some... known differences", Ina answered in her usual tone. Helmet indication was showing right numbers in the 'Pressure' line, but yes, it's better to move inside. Thermal system was holding off good so far, but there's really nothing more to look at outside, no reason to waste suit charge on strolling around. "Yeah, I'm okay, I know this drill".

"At least that fellow isn't yelling anymore. But how to shake him off... I guess there's enough people inside to see me hitting back of his head with a rifle stock. And they no doubt have cameras all over the place too. Have to pay attention to their coverage..."

JB strolled alongside the big guy who let them in. He had a bit more about him than the kind of guy most places stick on the door. Probably a lieutenant by the way he took the lead. But, not only wasn't he the guy in charge, he was obviously scared of the guy who was in charge. This was good as it meant JB knew what buttons to push to get him to work.

JB, with the permission of the lieutenant, casually took pics on his Comms device... empty corners and disused crates. These particular shots were to make the big guy think JB was helping him out by playing down their operation to The Corsairs, the main reason was so JB could covertly check the tracker on his device.

It didn't take long for JB to realise the client wasn't in this part of the compound.

"Looks good enough to keep the big wigs off my back," JB stated. "A few more rooms and I can get out of your hair. Just a few pics in there, mate..." JB gestured towards the doors to the atrium, the direction that the tracker was leading them.
11 May 2021, 4:34pm
Ina was wandering around, keeping close to JB, noticing any visible details of this place and what was happening here. This building was looking... Odd.

"Yeah, all as I expected. A big hangar-like area... Empty crates and containers all over the place, a pair of half-disassembled SRVs, perhaps beyond repair, old dimmed lighting, rusty cargo lifting machinery above... Some doors to other areas... Yeah. That control room in the top corner... About fifteen, maybe twenty meters above the floor, one can't just jump there, even at this low gravity, have to use the ladder... And there's one person there, looking at the screens... And all this stuff look like it was here for some time, unused, untouched. I see that containers with food rations and water, and they're certainly newer... Hm. This place don't look like it's being used for storage too extensively. Those grunts, around fifteen of them, they're just wandering around all over the place and looking into empty boxes without any visible purpose, they just move them around randomly. That's odd. It's an activity imitation? A facade picture of some sort? Need to share my observations with JB, maybe we can think something out of this..."

Hearing last JB's words and looking at his gesture, she came closer.

"Yeah. This one. Interesting room. Judging by it's position, we may reach the corridor to that strange building outside."
11 May 2021, 6:53pm
They would want to go there, wouldn’t they? Vodan could tell them to swivel or make them hang around till morning in case Vengerfield gets wind of visitors in the middle of the night by his clock. Either way, if he delayed the admittedly friendly invasion into the Ananis Clusters’ business, it would only come along later and maybe with far more people.

“Grh.. let me take you to the hub first. The guys need to get back to their posts and chill out before we go shakin up the routine again”

When they got to the Hub, Vodan explained how they integrated the existing systems with more modern systems to get the place up and running. He let the visitors poke into every hole they wanted to. Describing the work his teams had undertaken to get this place up to standard, and JBs continued picturing helped the time tick by in case Vengerfield had woken up to see what was going on. The last thing he wanted in the middle of the night was a face full of the boss.

They approached from the opposite side of Creamys’ cell so the attached corridor wasn’t obvious. Before he opened the airlock, Vodan paused.

“Keep the noise down in here, this is a work area and not everyone gets to sleep in the dorms”

Once inside, Vodan was pleased to see the blood had been cleaned up. The holo-screens were off and the big room was almost completely dark. There was one pool of light coming from Vengerfields’ seat. Dyson was sat in it making the thing look even bigger with a normal-sized guy sitting in it.

Looking at his tech guy, Vodan could tell Dyson was tired but determined to crack the covas he was working on.
11 May 2021, 11:31pm
JB wasn't expecting the room they'd walked into to look the way it did. The rest of the place seemed pretty empty so he expected at least this room to give a few clues as to what this gang did. There was, for some reason, a huge chair facing into a large area. A throne room for a seemingly hollow kingdom.

In JB's line of work he was more than aware that looks could be deceiving but the guy in the big seat was unlikely to be the head of this outfit. The big guy that was guiding them barely reacted to him, which wasn't the reaction he would expect him to have had this been his boss.

The sat-down guy was messing around with a COVAS which seemed weird, or at least notable. JB tinkered with them himself in the past... but there's no money to be made in COVAS repairs... not enough to keep a place like this going.

As JB took a few more pics, making sure to not point the lens at anything obvious that his guide would feel uncomfortable about, he noticed they were getting closer to the beacon.

JB's organisation had a few combat pilots back home but he was glad he'd subcontracted Muir, even if it was for the wrong initial reason. JB could see her checking the place out, hoping that she was taking it all in. It wouldn't be strange in the eyes of the guide, they were there to inspect the place after all, JB just hoped she was spotting things he might be missing.
12 May 2021, 12:40am
"Hmm. That's definitely some strange room... Wall full of holo-screens... That throne-looking big chair... And why they keep it so dark? There's a man sitting on this throne, but certainly not a king. Kings don't bother tinkering with old COVAS cores, using a cheap headlamp, slouching on their thrones in darkness... that's odd... What's he doing here? Tickling his ego by sitting on that chair? Isn't this job easier with lights on and table in front of you? Khm... Perhaps they want us to see this room so dark. And its position is curious, we're closer to that corridor than whenever before. No other explanation. Okay... Time for some old teen tricks about dark rooms."

"Dammit...", Ina whispered, getting her comm device out of the pocket and turning on its screen, to make it look like unexpected message, "...wht...go to hell", then she quickly put it back again. She wasn't unfamiliar to darkness, spending so much of her time in space, it was dark, but not completely pitch black dark. And that split second flash of faint light allowed her to see the simplest geometry of the room.

"Yup. Some human-sized... Hatch? Door? Airlock? It's just across the room, and it's closed. Have to say this to JB."
12 May 2021, 11:55am
“Who are they Vodan?” asked Dyson remembering to turn off his dim head lamp after flashing it in Vodans’ eyes.

Now the glow from his screens was up-lighting him, making the work-worn tech look like a cheap horror holo zombie.

“Damn inspection from the local nob. Like being in Im-fuckin-perial space” complained Vodan glancing back at the two inspectors momentarily. “Wot you doin there man, you look hammered”

“Hard line to the coms array” he answered picking up a bundle of cables connected to the covas and his various slates and computers. “This thing is a dead end for now so I’m hunting data signatures that.. .. “

He could sense Vodan getting board of the explanation already.

“Hacking stuff Dan, hacking stuff”
12 May 2021, 12:22pm
Watching as those two talked, Ina quickly switched off her helmet communications, leaving only in-ear device active.

"JB, door. Across the room", she whispered quietly to make sure she won't be heard by anyone except JB. Those two were talking loud enough to make it possible. Then she waited for their another exchange of phrases and repeated, "Repeat, door across the room", concealing her whisper.
12 May 2021, 4:36pm
"Good work, Muir," JB whispered in response, "The tracker is pointing in that direction so I'm guessing we've got to head through there."

JB looked around the large room. Apart from the two men in front of him he hadn't seen anyone else on this side of the compound. They were keeping their voices down... JB assumed their boss must be nearby, he hoped it wasn't through the little door at the back that they needed to go through. But a big throne in a big throne room? You gotta figure the boss won't want some pokey room downstairs and will want something larger to fit his ego.

"Can we have a look through there?" JB asked his guide, gesturing to the door the Ina pointed out. The man on the throne looked up very briefly, "...but, you know, if we could get some lights on in here we could get a few pics upstairs instead? Just a few more of them and we can let you boys get back to it?"
12 May 2021, 5:09pm
“No lights”
“No lights”

Said Vodan and Dyson together in a hushed tone that had a lot in common with a command.

“And that place is way out of bounds. That’s the reason we’re here on a dead rock surrounded by people like you”

The side of his head and his jaw felt like they were aching where Creamy had kicked him on previous meetings.

“No, that little toss-pot is .. . For the master only”
12 May 2021, 7:11pm
Ina was correct, that was the right door. Whatever they wanted the poor kid for, their boss was hiding him down there. The dimmed lights, the hushed tones and being by the throne room, JB knew their boss must be sleeping nearby. The worrying thing was how scared these two were of their boss. It was their weakness when negotiating where JB and Muir could or could not go... but JB was hoping that they wouldn't call his bluff if he applied the pressure...

"If I go back telling my gaffer that there was a room that you stopped us looking into then I'll be sent straight back... with more than that bucket of shit sat out on the pad," JB stated in a calm tone. Then, with slightly rising volume to add a little threat of disturbing their boss, JB continued; "We don't give a shit if you're keeping people here. Show us that you're not keeping something else back there and we'll have no need for things to start getting NOISY."

JB didn't say it too loudly but, hopefully, enough to make his guide's bum twitch. This was a last ditch attempt. If the guide didn't go for it then things were going to have to get punchy and shooty... and he hoped that Ina was ready if the shit hit the fan.

JB stood his ground, hoping that the guide would keep the shit and the fan separated for as long as possible.

"Okay, things are getting serious."

Two faint clicks of rifle safety switch going from 'Safety' to 'Full Auto' announced that Ina was pretty aware of possible negotiation problems.
