Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Brace for jump!"

Already the frameshift drive is spooling. Another salvo lands home, breaking the shields and leaving long, cruel scorch marks down its hull. Man and woman are jolted in their seats, internal damage registering on the instrument panel. Michael glances to his side, watching the icon close in as the countdown announces itself...

"Five... four... Three...two..."

The Krait Mk II blinks into hyperspace. A salvo of plasma speeds by where it had been only seconds prior.

His face expressionless, The Hunter selects his wake scanner. The device scans the Misadventure's residual wake.

"... one... engage."

The Misadventure plunges into witchspace.

"That was ruddy close," says Veronica. "But we ain't out of the woods yet. When we arrive, don't faff about scoopin' fuel. Just get us as far away from the star as possible while yer FSD's coolin' down. High wake as soon as you can. I'll 'ave a new system ready on the navcom. We're gunna rinse an' repeat a couple of times. Don't worry, you've got enough fuel, but we can do a quick scoop at the third star. Ferdies are renowned for 'avin' short jump ranges, an' I'm 'opin' this one's no exception. With a bit of luck we'll be able to shake off whoever's chasing us."

As Veronica finishes speaking, the Misadventure drops out of hyperspace.
19 May 2021, 6:36pm
Worry transitions into irritation across Michael's features. He turns to his crewwoman, looking over his shoulder as the Misadventure drops out of witchspace. For the first time since they met he raises his voice in anger.

"You really think I don't know all that?"

JB Threepwood"Muir," JB panted into his comms, "Any time you want to blackout the main hall it'd be appreciated."

They continued to circle...

"...Tell them that something noisy is in the dark hall, you was scared and ran and lost, everything else as pla...", Ina tried to give new instructions to Jacqueline, but she overcame her fear and pressed the communication button fast.

"Who is it?", male voice answered through the comms interface, and it sounded a bit annoyed.

"It's me... Jacqueline... I'm... I'm lost. Something... Started in the hall, noises, yelling... I was returning there and... I'm scared! I ran... And got lost, and this woman, she... Escorted me here...", Jacqueline was already scared and confused, so her disguise looked pretty plausible and natural, "...I want to know... Where my master is... To return, avoiding... See the camera feed..."

"No", he refused abruptly, and then added, "His personal areas are off the camera coverage."

"Please!.. Just... Just me, she will wait here! You know... You know what master does when he's angry!.. Just... I just look where he is..."

"Hmmm...", male voice answered with a pause. Perhaps, he knew it, maybe even well. That pause was short, just a few seconds, but... It felt almost endless. Ina knew that she could just pull the trigger, turning a door, the person behind that door, control terminals and opposite wall into shreds, but they still needed that quiet disguise and that terminals to do the job in a proper way. But then man changed his mind and replied, "Okay. You go in, she will wait. One glance at the cameras and you go out. No staring. Let me open this". Jacqueline let out a sigh of relief, and Ina was close to it too: she put the rifle belt off her shoulder, preparing for a melee takedown. Then door opened...

"Goddammit! Why it's always going that way? Just couldn't predict that this guy would have a cyber leg prosthesis!"

Ina had to change her plans again, because no way this guy's half-pants would fit Jacqueline. Later. It's time to act here and now. As soon as door had opened, she jumped in, pushing the man back into the control room with her shoulder, using all her mass, and his shocked gasp was really a pleasant thing to hear now. This surprise attack was continued with a rifle stock strike right into the chest, leaving him dazed, beating the air out of his lungs. Man tried to block the next strike, trying to stay on foot and cover the chest with both of his arms, but he made a mistake, as next blow was aimed right at his temple. It was enough: magboots lost their contact with the floor and opponent flew right into the wall, being knocked out.

"Phew. I prefer to shoot them. Jacqueline? Come here. Grab his helmet and jacket, we'll find your pants later. And tell me please what's on his biomonitor".

Jacqueline was standing in the doorway with a surprised expression, but now it was more like a pleasant kind of it. She still didn't knew why Ina was helping her and what was on her mind, but seeing one of local bandits being so instantly and brutally beaten revived her hope for justice and, maybe, even escape from here.

"Jacqueline? Please. Come in."

"Ah... Okay. Yeah. Sure. Sorry", Jacqueline replied and walked towards defeated opponent.

"This was that awesome?", Ina inquired with a bit of curious tone, untinting her helmet glass.

"Mmmmhmmm...", she still sounded a bit confused and scared, but definitely less than before, "He's in deep knockout... Concussion, three broken ribs, but he won't die from it. Helmet is slightly deformed, but still airtight... And, Ina... Should I... Well... You know... Finish..."

"Nah. Let him live", Ina wasn't losing any time too, she stood near the control terminals, activating them, "Just take his jacket and helmet, then throw him through the door and close us here. We aren't waiting any visitors from now on".

"So... What we have here... Landing pads... Security settings... Yeah, turrets. Off... Landing logs... Bunch of their ships... Hey, they moved in just a pair of weeks ago! So... Down, down, down... Yep. The Cuckoo. Delete entry. Disengage locks. Done. Awesome... Now let's distract them somehow... Station maintenance menu... Ventilation... Pressure control... Sewage pumps... Hey! I always wanted to do this! Drown, baby, drown! Reverse. Next... Lighting... Dammit! Separate controls for each light source, too many... Yeah, this will work, a maintenance reboot and check-up, few minutes of darkness will do fine..."

"Hey, JB", Ina activated the comms, "I'm in. Done with the turrets, landing clamps and logs. Giving you a few minutes of darkness... Now", Ina pressed the button and every single light in the complex had turned off, covering everything in the absolute darkness, with only airlock and air conditioning indicators left.

"Crap, they'll see me now!"

Ina crouched, hiding herself from any sight, as she was too visible now, being lit by several screens around. Jacqueline was too deep inside the room to be visible through windows, but control panel was right before them.

"Ah, here you are", Ina whispered, locating the main control panel power switch, covered by a mess of various cables under the table top, "Jacqueline, let me know when you're done", but metal sound of closing airlock, followed by a thud of body, hitting the floor in a low gravity, said everything as well. "Okay, now hide... Please. Things are going to get very hot very soon." Click! Complete darkness. Only sounds now.

Click-click! 'Full Auto'. Click! Holo-projector on. Click! Bipod unfolded. Click! Bipod magnets activated. Clang! Clang! Bipod fixed on the table.

"Yeah. I see you. I see all of you."

Ina aimed at the left side of the crowd, planning to start her fight with a long burst, crossing their ranks from left to right. Her right hand was tightly holding the grip, left one was placed on the top of the rifle stock, magboots were firmly set on the floor with their power set almost to maximum.

In-station announcement mic, placed on a side of the table was too tempting. "Hey, Jacqueline! Let's make them wet their pants even more. Could you turn that thing on for a while? My hands are full. Just keep your head down, push the button, let me say something and then hide again. Okay?", Ina was still trying to describe what she wants in the most verbose way, to let Jacqueline in her shocked and traumatized state know Ina's intentions well and do everything right.

"Sure", she answered, crawled towards the table and reached the mic button. "Wow.... Your... Your eyes."

Ina nodded. She knew that she could be looking pretty vicious now.

"Bring it on, you little suckers!"

And then she pulled the trigger, breaking the darkness and silence with sound of shattered glass and frightening roar of automatic fire.

"Oi! Don't get tetchy with me, mate! You're the one who almost got us blown to bits just tryin' to scoop a bleedin' key!

Veronica rolls her eyes, then checks her dashboard sensor array to see that the Misadventure is speeding away from the star. She taps a set of commands into the navcom.

"Right, a new destination's plotted an' locked in. No other ships on sensors, but that bloke's probably already analysed our wake. So let's not 'ang about waitin' for 'im, eh? If that's all the same to you, of course."
19 May 2021, 9:23pm
Michael wastes no time with scooping, and engages the frameshift drive to the next destination that Katie selected. The Misadventure jumps, ending up over another star. The low rumble of the fuel scoop kicks on, and Michael rises from his seat, striding to the main display. He removes a data disk from his pocket and plugs it in. The galaxy map opens up for both to see, scrolling rapidly until it settles on a specific system. The system in question is remote, far from the Bubble, with a warning about Thargoid presence in bold letters for both to see.

Ridge looks over his shoulder, his features still hard but his tone less than before.

"I didn't want to involve you in this next part," he says. "But we don't have a choice anymore."
19 May 2021, 9:39pm
Veronica's jaw gapes in amazement as she watches Ridge striding across the flight deck. She blinks and shakes her head, gesturing with both hands towards her sensors as if saying 'We're on the run from a hostile, and you choose this moment to go for a walk?'. With a sigh and another shake of her head, she stands up and joins Ridge at the viewscreen.

"We really don't 'ave time for this," she says, folding her arms, "so let's be quick. What 'next part' are you on about? Who's the bloke in the Fer de Lance? Why is he so interested in you? What 'ave you been up to, Ridge?"

"Bring it on, you little suckers!"

And then she pulled the trigger, breaking the darkness and silence with sound of shattered glass and frightening roar of automatic fire.

Grunting with the effort, Creamy opened his eyes. He was getting truly fed up with getting beaten in an unarmed fight. He couldn’t say ‘I only tend to lose if I’m very drunk or ambushed’ because it wouldn’t be true if this carried on. Just as he was getting his focus back, everything went dark.

Creamy tried to rub his eyes, but he had a helmet on. Fortunately, torchlight coming from deeper in the building told Creamy it was just that the lights had gone out. The sound of many people running and their lights approaching fast spurred Creamy into action although his body was complaining about it.

He could see glimpses of two people fighting in the flashing lights from the people on the catwalk above. It was easy to work out from the size of one of the men, that was clearly the guy that had humiliated Creamy more than once. Real anger was not a feeling Creamy was familiar with, but he was feeling it now. Not just because this person had beaten Creamy and kept him prisoner, but because Creamy had started to doubt he could outlast the man and he may give up a name.

He was surprised to find he was already moving fast towards his target, but Creamy was not in the mood to control his emotions. The big man, and who Creamy assumed was JB were on the fighting ring and JB was doing a good job of staying out of the way. Creamy left the floor and sprinted along the wall brushing his left hand on the floor to keep himself level.

Just as Vengerfield planted his foot to deliver a devastating blow, Creamy swept up the mans’ leg and hugged it into his shoulder, and kept running. Before he hit the corner, Creamy twisted in the air to come upright and slammed his back against the wall. It hurt like hell, but he took hold of Vengerfields’ leg in both hands and used the momentum to swing the man at the airlock the same way Vengerfield had slammed Creamy into the ceiling.

Vengerfields unprotected face hit the airlock control hard enough to smash it and the inner door opened. Vengerfield hit the other side of the airlock with his ribs bending him into an odd angle causing him to grunt as he wheeled off into the darkness by the holo-display bank.

“Com.. come” wheezed Creamy painfully as he tried to get his breath back. “Come on AJ, I think we better get a wiggle on what?”

He lumbered his way into the airlock and took cover. As soon as his erstwhile rescuer got here, they could get Ninette to safety and get away from the man that wanted the name of the woman that took Nerys away from danger. That comforting thought disappeared as cold shock pushed it away.

“Oh bugger! I dropped Ninette”

“Oh bugger! I dropped Ninette”

A roar of gunfire came from the next room as JB sprinted towards the airlock harbouring Creamy, scooping up his pistol as he went. The lights of the two remaining guards searching for a target. JB ducked into the airlock and concealed himself behind the doorway.

"Ninette?" quizzed JB, "We ain't got the time to go searching for more of your girlfriends, mate, we gotta get outta here!"

[warning: disturbing, highly violent content]

Screams of pain and agony, sounds of ripped flesh and falling bodies, metal noise of plasma rounds hitting the floor and opposite wall added to a gunfire. Bandit troops were completely shocked by a sudden attack, some of them tried to run away, stumbling and falling, hitting cargo containers and each other in a complete darkness. Some pretended to be dead, or were actually dead, laying on the floor, somebody turned their flashlights on, trying to find any cover behind the containers. First flashes of returning fire appeared, completely ineffective at more than one hundred meters distance and without any aiming, laser beams were chaotically hitting walls and ceiling, filling the air with sparks, flak pellets helplessly ricocheted off the control room walls. Side window covered with a web of cracks.

Ina saw every one of them. Holo-projector was effectively converting data from infrared sensors and showing the picture of panic and chaos on a little rectangular transparent display, which was also good at dimming out the muzzle flash for her. Simple thing, but deadly effective. First long, five-second burst turned the crowd, surprised by a darkness, into an infernal picture of human mess, with bodies torn apart, ripped off arms and legs, splatters of blood, chunks of flesh and intestines scattered over the floor. Almost a dozen of grunts were killed, somebody tried to crawl away with their legs torn off below the knees, some bandits were crumpled up in agony, laying on the floor and writhing.

A cloud of blood filled the air and was slowly descending at the low gravity, clearly visible on the holo-screen. When the crowd was scattered, Ina began to fire shorter bursts, suppressing any efforts to aim at her or point a flashlight at the control booth. They were useless at this distance anyway, but bandits seem to have forgotten how easy a target they were when using them.

Ina was deliberately ignoring severely wounded and crippled opponents. Heavy plasma rifle was making excruciating, even lethal wounds at good hits, eviscerating and tearing their limbs off, so it was obvious that these wounded had only a few more minutes to live. Their screams were utterly demoralizing, bringing more chaos and fear in enemy ranks, as that little private criminal army was used to rough up lightly armed traders, civilians, other almost untrained gangs, but now it's not only a surprise effect, but skills, cold blood and military-grade weapon against them.

Another short burst turned the edge of metal container into shreds, as someone tried to look around it, aiming a gun. Bandit dropped his weapon, his body unnaturally bent sideways, and little cloud of blood and little flesh chunks covered the air around him. Ammo counter on Ina's rifle turned red, and she quickly swapped a magazine, grabbing next one from a belt on her arm.

Background humming of power generator became a bit louder, which meant that lighting subsystem almost finished its reboot and soon lights would be on again.

"This is your end", Ina used the station announcement mic once again, speaking with mesmerizing calm voice.

With an impatient sigh, Veronica turns toward the control panel. Glancing at the galaxy map she sees, for the first time, the system Ridge selected. She does a double-take at the warning of Thargoid presence, and purses her lips. Without further ado she calls up the ship's manifest.

"Right then, what 'ave we got? Two canisters of polymers, eight of beer, twenty limpets... that's good. Never go anywhere without a few limpets. Twenty-eight radiation baffles, a Guardian relic... oh, you've already got one, then. And what's this? Sixteen canisters of meta-alloys."

Veronica takes a step back from the screen and, folding her arms, turns to face Ridge.

"Oh, I see! I get it now. You're gunna get the Thargoids drunk on beer, an' then slap 'em to death with radiation baffles. Yeah, cunnin' plan, that."
20 May 2021, 10:06am
Michael almost smiles.

"The Thargoids figure into it, yeah. Or at least... one of their structures does."

The Fer de Lance enters the same system as the Misadventure, in low orbit over the main star, replenishing its fuel.

The Hunter maneuvers into position behind it.
