Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Another star, the final one of the jump sequence, loomed before the pair. The Krait was nearly out of fuel, its scoop greedily sucking the dense stellar hydrogen, the Misadventure streaking along in low orbit. From within the cockpit, Michael turned to his side, verifying their destination.

"We're probably going to die, so... I might as well tell you. My... associates... are pretty damn sure that human AI is built on salvaged Guardian AI. And we're not talking circuit boards and transponders. This tech, well... it lives in subatomic space, everywhere and nowhere, time and distance having no meaning. The only thing that was ever any good at killing it was exposure to active Thargoid biomechanics. So that's what we're doing. But to actually do it?"

Sarcasm drips from his every word.

"Well, first we land in the middle of a structure built by insectoid beings that have a history of wanting to kill us. Then, we go inside and hope that nothing kills us. Then, we locate the central chamber and hope that plugging in the relic doesn't kill us. All while shaking the AI minions who are trying to kill us."

He shrugs.

"What could be simpler?"

The Fer de Lance jumps to its final destination. The Hunter scans his instruments, with no sign of his prey. No matter. Their destination is obvious. Their deaths, only a matter of time.

He banks the Fer de Lance away from the star toward a remote moon. Even from across a solar system, an ancient hatred for an ancient foe stirs malevolent thoughts, more and more of the Void Beasts' hateful essence felt like a faded nightmare.

Truly, this would be a day of reckoning.

JB Threepwood

JB tapped the side of his helmet beside his right ear and signaled "Oh...one...three" with one hand, hoping that Creamy would know to tune into that comm channel.

JB seemed to be inquiring as to Creamys’ ability to drive after a few knocks to the head.

“No no, I’m fine” Yelled Creamy as if JB had a chance of hearing him. Just in case, Creamy mimed along, “A bit fuzzy, but I’m still compos mentis” finished Creamy with a double thumb up. That always seemed to reassure people like the visual equivalent of the ancient earth saying ‘no worries mate’

Once JB got himself situated, Creamy reversed out and turned to face the building they escaped from and Creamy didn’t appreciate the view. The big man was there and they locked eyes. A thumbs-up wasn’t going to settle him down, so Creamy pulled a hard turn and engaged the thrust. Two things happened at the same time; the thrusts belched out nothing but black smoke and the front right strut missing its wheel dug into the soft powdery surface of the moon spinning the SRV around.

Again Creamy was facing the way he had started but one vehicle length over sitting in a cloud of barely moving dust and black smoke, but this time Vengerfield was a damn site closer.

“Geeah! No more right turns then” he said reversing.

Left or right.. .. but mostly left, it didn’t really matter; all Creamy knew was that Muir and Jacqueline were in the building somewhere and they needed picking up, and the big guy needed to stay in the rear-view.

JB tried to see through the cloud of lifted dust. He could make out a figure coming out of the building they'd just left, the damaged airlock hadn't held them back long. JB pulled back the trigger of the turret, aiming up the crosshairs at the emerging man. The console sparked and the HUD blinked off. Swearing to himself, JB leant down and reattached a few loose wires.

Suddenly, JB felt Creamy put the SRV into reverse. The reconnected electrics sparked and the HUD flickered back to life. JB looked back through the crosshairs but only to see a much bigger cloud.

"Muir," JB shouted into his Comms, "You may want to hurry with that Remlock, Commander... there's reinforcements coming your way and I don't think the... structural integrity... of this outpost is high in anybody's priorities."

[warning: disturbing, violent content]

"Got it", Ina replied instantly. She was waiting for this signal...

"Ah. At last. He got the 'main' hostage and free to go, but he still don't mind me coming with him. I think I have to say thanks to that Creamy guy for this. Saw an old Python on a far landing pad anyway... And this silence was starting to be irritating."

"Okay, Jacqueline, see that guard's chair? Grab it and break the side window. Then jump down. I'll follow you. We're getting out of here. Got it?", she instructed Jacqueline, trying to sound quiet and don't let the bandits overhear her plans.

"Yeah... Chair, break the window, jump. Yeah."

Sound of broken glass attracted one of the bandits and he peeked out of his cover to look at what's happening up there in the control room, perhaps thinking that Ina was there alone. A costly mistake, as she was still aiming at them, and reaction was instant - a sound of three-round burst was an excellent accompaniment to picture of his head exploding like a watermelon. Screams of fear sounded from behind the container and two remaining bandits quickly ran away, trying to hide behind the neighbouring stack. First one succeeded, but second wasn't so lucky, as Ina already moved her sights sideways and pulled the trigger. He already jumped and was mid-air, when second burst sounded like a death sentence. A slow and painful death sentence, since one plasma round hit his ankle, ripping it away, and second one made a hole in his stomach. No doubt his companion was pretty surprised too.

Ina disengaged the bipod magnets and folded the bipod, moving closer to the side window, then glanced at the ammo counter. "Armed/Rds:18". "Okaaay...", she said, spraying the ammo over the containers, which was a cover for remaining one and a half bandits, to reload and jump down to Jacqueline afterwards.

"Jacqueline, follow me," Ina said, touching the floor, "We're going to find you some new garbs."

Women walked towards the closest body that was visible from their position, and that still had legs intact: Ina was walking forward, aiming the rifle and looking around the edges, and Jacqueline tried to stay as close to her as possible.

"Should she... Or me... Damn. That's already too hard for her."

"Here. Hold it. Just hold it, don't shoot, okay?", Ina passed her rifle to Jacqueline, and then started to remove boots from a dead grunt - Jacqueline's 'indoor' magnetic shoes weren't a good option for outside walk. Trousers were a bigger problem as they were more tight, so Ina had to place her boot on what's left of the bandit's chest and pull them. "Hey! At least now I can say that I have an experience of undressing a man."

"Damn. Hope my comm device was off. But... What's that noise?.. Crap!"

"Crap! Grab the boots and trousers and take cover," Ina said, taking the rifle back, as she heard the footsteps, "That last one is moving somewhere". However, sound of footsteps was becoming too loud for just one remaining bandit, and it was echoing over the storage area. Finally, two airlock doors on the side wall opened and Ina saw enemy reinforcements incoming.

"Dammit! Jacqueline, put them on fast, we have to move!", Ina was trying to shout louder than her rifle, as she dropped to one knee and fired a long burst at one of the opened doors. Walls of a corridor behind that door quickly became red, dense blood cloud filled the air and intense screaming added to the sounds of gunfire. But she hadn't such a clear line of fire to the second door, it was far away and obstructed by multiple stacks of cargo containers, so she was just sending dozens of plasma rounds to the corridor, hoping to kill as much as she can and force others to retreat and go through the second door. Jacqueline was hiding two meters away in the open container, quickly putting the last suit parts on.

"Come on, Jacqueline... Come on... I can't sit here in the open forever and stay alive..."

"I'm ready!", Jacqueline shouted after a few seconds.

"Dammit... There's no less than fifty meters to the exit door, and it's completely open. We can't just run there, showing them our backs, they will shot us instantly... Think... Think... Got it."

"Stay behind my back!", Ina shouted, sending another burst to the opened corridor in front of her, but it was already empty, only a half-dozen of bodies were laying on the floor. "Okay, now go!", she grabbed Jacqueline's hand and made a sprint to the open door, entering the corridor. Bandits, that were spreading all over the storage area, were trying to block the probable path to the exit, and no way they expected this counterattack, so when they realised that women were running in the opposite direction and moved their sights to open fire, it was already too late.

Ina quickly closed the door, reloaded her rifle and said to the comms, "JB, we're going to the exit. Halfway now."

JB span the turret to face the way the reversing SRV was heading. The barren moon stretched out in front of them, in the near distance he could make out the lip of a large crater in the looming darkness. JB shouted to Creamy through his Comms;

"Goodness! Go forwards... GO FORWARDS!!!..." JB turned in his seat to see Creamy seamingly oblivious, trying to peer through the huge cloud of dust. He also noticed that the front right strut was buckled and missing it's wheel.

The SRV was still hurtling towards the crater.

"Goodness! Turn us around! Turn us a...," it dawned on JB that the Lordling must not have linked his Comms. "...for fuck's sake.."

JB quickly opened up the communication panel in the turret's HUD. The HUD was flickering and a lot of the information wasn't lined up the way it should. JB brought up the keyboard and hoped he was sending the message through so at least Creamy would read it.

[Creamy! Turn us around! NOW!] JB looked at the crater, that was no longer so far away anymore, then added, [!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

Veronica swallows hard as she double-checks the Misadventure's current location on the navcom.

"Okay, Ridge," she says, "the fact we've actually arrived in a system with a Thargoid presence does add a tiny bit of credence to yer story. But so far that's all it is. A story. An 'ighly improbable one, an' all. I mean, look at it from my point of view. I'm 'earin' a lot of words, but I ain't seein' any evidence to back it up. You claim there's an AI in the 'old, but manifest records can be falsified. You claim that bloke in the Ferdie's an AI minion, but he could just be a nutter with an obsessive 'atred for Krait twos. An' I still 'aven't ruled out the possibility that you an' him are in league. Maybe you both get your kicks out of pickin' up women an' scarin' 'em to death. Is that yer game? Well, let me tell you, mate, I don't scare easy."

Pausing for breath, Veronica looks straight ahead out of her canopy. A planetary body is beginning to loom large against the blackness of space.

Driving felt like freedom and Creamy was almost enjoying it. The covas interrupted his chance of relaxing for a few seconds. It was German and male, Creamy couldn’t understand what it said, but he checked all the panels until he saw a message.

JB Threepwood

JB quickly opened up the communication panel in the turret's HUD. The HUD was flickering and a lot of the information wasn't lined up the way it should. JB brought up the keyboard and hoped he was sending the message through so at least Creamy would read it.

[Creamy! Turn us around! NOW!] JB looked at the crater, that was no longer so far away anymore, then added, [!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

Just because he didn’t know why, Creamy turned around. He had to go the long way because turning right was off the table. He hugged the building in case the girls were going to make their own exit and tried to ignore the many armed people readying weapons.

As the thrusters didn’t work, Creamy dropped all the power out of engines and gave it to the shields and turret.

"You'll see it all soon enough."

The Misadventure breaks low orbit, cutting through the thin atmosphere toward the structure. A tiny olive dot in the distance, it grows and grows until its ominous pinwheel shape takes form. Jagged edges rise into the black, starry skies, inhuman light glowing from numerous sources. A sickly green mist permeates the area. Michael's features harden.

"And if you aren't afraid..."

The Krait touches down, Michael rising from his seat, taking a step closer to the biomechanical morass before him. The structure dwarves even the Misadventure. Scavenger drones bustle about around them. He turns to Katie.

"You should be."
22 May 2021, 11:32am
Screwing up her nose and bobbing her head from side to side, Veronica repeats Ridge's last remark in a mocking, high-pitched parody of his voice. Rolling her eyes, she rises from her seat and moves towards the flight deck's exit hatch.

"Come on, then," she calls back, adding, "or are yer just gunna stand there lookin' at it? Let's get this so-called AI of yours over there, plug it in, see what it does an' bugger off before anyone's the wiser."

She opens the hatch and steps into the corridor beyond.

"This way," Michael said.

Ridge leads his partner to a locker, various weapons visible behind a steel grate. He selects a carbine and a long pistol, gesturing to the other weapons.

"If you know how to use it, help yourself."

He loads a few spare magazines into his utility pockets.

Creamy Goodness IIIAs the thrusters didn’t work, Creamy dropped all the power out of engines and gave it to the shields and turret.

"There's two passages, to the left and to the right... Perhaps it's some kind of long corridor that goes through all the building... Exit is to the left and it's the shortest way, but all goons are amassed at right, and they'll shot us in the backs as soon as we go left... Stairway in front of us is a chance though, we can reach the roof... These standard outposts are pretty simple in general..."

"Okay", Ina said to Jacqueline, "Jump forward to that stairway on three... two... one... Go!"

Both women jumped at once, crossing the corridor fast enough to hear gunfire from the relative safety of the stairway, but multiple footstep sounds that were following the shots reminded them to hurry. "Move! Move!", Ina helped Jacqueline to get up and they both ran upstairs, crossing one level after another.

"Ah, there it is!"

There was an airlock door instead of 4th level, with a 'Roof Access' sign above it, and the pressure control panel.

"Should you go...", Jacqueline tried to inquire Ina about her plans, but she replied quickly.

"We have to go both. Push that button! The less air inside, the less time to equalize. And don't forget to switch your comms on."

They squeezed into the airlock chamber, closed the door and then the nervous waiting started, as the old air pump wasn't meant to work fast, it was good to see it working at all. Its humming was slowly turning into a tortured groan as pressure indicator was reaching 0.2atm, then it became completely unhealthy loud at 0.15 and pressure stuck at this level.

Few incoming shots made inner airlock door tremble and a hissing sound appeared. 0.16... 0.17... 0.18... "Damn!", Ina grabbed her pistol instantly, almost on a reflex level, and shot the outer door locking clamps. That little pressure was enough to make the door open a bit, and all remaining air spread into space. An emergency light appeared above their heads. Ina pushed the door with her foot and opened it completely, gaining access to the roof. Landing pads were visible from here.

"Phew. That Keelback is still here."

"See that shabby Keelback?", Ina asked, as women were running to the roof's edge, "We're going there. Aaaaand...", she stopped, thinking. "Maybe... Phah! Why not?!", she turned around, aimed her rifle at the airlock door and pulled the trigger.

"Oh... Wow...", Jacqueline looked like she was now almost sure that they're going to actually escape.

"It's about 25-30 meters... 0.05G... Yeah. No problems here."

"Jacqueline... Hold tight", Ina grabbed her by the waist and stepped off the roof, aiming at the metal walkway below them.

Veronica steps up to the locker and stares intently at the small arsenal within. She looks from one weapon to the next and back again, chewing her lower lip and frowning deeply. Finally she takes a deep breath and heaves a strained sigh, then tentatively reaches out towards a carbine rifle. Her fingertips barely make contact with the weapon when she withdraws her hand again. She steps back from the locker and turns to face Ridge.

"Maybe I should've mentioned this earlier," she begins, "but I didn't expect it to come up. Thing is, Ridge... I don't do guns. There ain't any call for it in my line of work, see."
22 May 2021, 4:23pm
Ridge nods.

"Nor mine if I do my job right. But a little insurance never hurts. C'mon. Let's head to the SRV bays."
22 May 2021, 5:13pm
"Wait!"

Veronica glances into the locker, then looks at Ridge.

"I said I don't do guns. I didn't say I dunno 'ow to use 'em."

She steps back to the locker and takes out a kinetic rifle similar to the one Ridge is holding. She activates the weapon's automatic rangefinder and magazine status display, checking the readouts on each in turn with a practiced skill. From the locker she takes a night-vision scope and slots it into position. Then she selects an ammunition magazine and inserts it into the rifle, locking it into place and checking the readout once more. She hefts the weapon to test its balance, then deactivates it and slings it across her right shoulder.

Next she selects a long-barreled plasma pistol, activates it and checks the readouts, then deactivates it. She also finds and puts on a holster, into which she places the pistol. Reaching into the locker once more she takes out a few extra ammunition magazines and a grenade belt, on which are a dozen fragmentation grenades.

"I might be a bit rusty," she says as she drapes the grenade belt around her neck. "I 'aven't used this sort of stuff since I was-"
