Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

JB understood the paranoia that Ina felt, even if it was for different reasons. JB had RICO teams investigating him and breathing down his organisation's neck. Ina was a gun for hire so you never know who's feathers you're ruffling.

"I don't buy into blood being thicker than water thing," JB began, "Family is just a contract you're entered into but never signed."

JB truly believed that. Being his mom's son had been nothing but a stone in his shoe. He was young when he was recruited by his old gang and never went home. Never checked on her. He didn't know if she was still alive, nor did he care.

"Well, Commander," said JB as he gave Ina the once over, "They look a bit more piratical than us but it should get us through the door."

JB smiled then turned and left, heading through to the cockpit. Once he'd walked through he sat in his chair. JB brought up the Nav panel as he brought The Cuckoo closer to the moon the beacon was on.

JB started to sync the tracker to his Comms Unit when he noticed a discrepancy with the beacon.

"We should probably hurry," JB called back to Ina, "Sovereign Shield said they've only just had this beacon light up, according to the device it's been activated for over a week. The poor kid must be freaking out."
09 May 2021, 7:22pm
"Yeah, we should be moving then", Ina agreed, following JB back to the cockpit. With that slightly positive thoughts about wearing a leather jacket again, "Yeah, I'm certainly now look like I'm back in my rebel late teens, phah."

"And I don't get that 'family ties' stuff. We're adults and can choose with whom to spend our time. Or... Try to spend. Aim to. Whatever. We can't choose where and when to be born, but must have a choice which path to follow... A bit off topic, but perhaps, that's the one of reasons for me to hate slavery so much", she said, taking a place in co-pilot seat and fastening the belts. "The only good thing I see in having troubled past... It makes you stronger. Not a 'greenhouse plant' kind. That's a fair price."

"Talking is nice, but when it's... more free. In every matter", she said then, looking at the barren surface of a small planet in front them, "And something tells me that even if you have things to speak out, it's not the time and not the... right person, maybe."

"And I highly doubt that he really would be willing to do it at all. That's the common issue about closeted personalities... They just don't allow themselves to speak things. It's like world would collapse if they do. So they carry everything within them, seeking consolation in something else. Trying to cope, maybe. Even if they know the risks of having a total breakdown eventually, and sometimes they don't know. Or being too confident stops them from realising it. Or they're afraid of being misunderstood or blamed. This one? Maybe, he's too vigilant in holding to his pride, his image, he was building it over years and afraid to lose eventually. And all that reflections and 'speaking yourself outs' are really out of this image. Truth is, the more he tries to hide inside, the more the stress, and it's constant. It's... deforming. And the business he usually do? It's not only raising its magnitude, but keeps telling him that it's the only way to go. But... Well, let him live his life. I don't want to be too annoying..."

Having this line of thoughts concluded, Ina took her comm device out of the pocket and started reading something from the screen, smiling.

09 May 2021, 8:02pm
JB started to bring The Cuckoo around to the far side of the moon, taking the time to check the traffic around the unmarked outpost. No squadron or faction tags but he didn't want to announce their arrival by starting his KWS up.

"If you don't like slavers then you might be in luck," JB called back to Ina, "They've had this kid for two weeks and haven't contacted anyone for a ransom. Chances are they don't know he's bugged, could be their planning on selling the poor little fucker on. My organisation has a pretty strict rule on slaves... my boss, Red Rose... she's really into "Railroading" the poor buggers to safety. I take that you not liking the Empire is slave related?"
09 May 2021, 8:42pm
"Well... Ummm... Almost...", JB's words returned Ina into this world, she put her communicator back and answered, "I don't like all of them. Feds, Imps, Alliance. Their top is living a live of luxury, built by billions of 'simple people'. Imps at least have the gut to call it the right name. In Fed or Alli space... If your job can buy you a flea-ridden bunk bed and cheap synthetic chow... What is it, other than a slavery?"

Ina watched as the lifeless little frozen rock of Lozin ABC 8B rotated under the ship, that was travelling through orbit.

"And they tend to grab what was built by other people, to use it. But there's billions of uninhabited planets around. So I'm helping Independent worlds to hold them off. It might look like a mercenary work, but I choose the sides, analyse the backgrounds. Maybe they will build their own society, maybe not, but I can't help with everything. I'm as small as a star dust in this Universe. But I like what I do now. Maybe I'll change my opinion about 'what to do' in the future, well, because nobody can predict future, but... My views on superpowers aren't changing for years and I see no reason for them to change."
09 May 2021, 9:06pm
"I don't blame you," JB responded. "When Red Rose came to me and the others, to help start Jamaica Inn Movement, we thought we'd just be a big gang running our racket from a little outpost on the edge of the bubble... but once Rose saw the difference we could make to the people in the system she moved us into politics..."

JB kept his eye on the traffic. There were three Vultures circling the site and a handful of ships parked up.

"...none of us wanted to be under the boot of the big guys so we registered as an Independent Democracy. We've grown but we make sure we only take systems those buggers aren't interested in. If I've learned anything from Rose it's that even one person can make a difference in this Galaxy."
09 May 2021, 9:25pm
"I know", Ina answered, "Everyone can make a difference. I was that difference dozens of times. We are making a difference for someone by simply living and being ourselves. Sum up all the efforts done by every single human being and you'll get the position at which humankind is now."

"But if you do too much by your own hands, you leave people whom you are helping without experience, which could be helpful for them in the future."
10 May 2021, 9:43am
JB nodded in agreement as he pulled up the comms screen.

[All ships stand down. This is Saverio de Carreras of The Imperial Corsairs. Prepare for routine inspection of your outpost.]

"We're going in, Muir, hold onto that rifle and follow my lead."
10 May 2021, 10:22am
“Stand fucking down!” Exclaimed Thade. “Who dose this cock-goblin think they are?”

Thade started activating the turrets to track in incoming vessel so as not to bother his pilots. Vodan deactivate the turrets and read the message again.

“It’s late, Vengerfield is in his quarters and I don’t want to wake him up by blowing a nosey local out of the sky. Besides, we’re guests here using the Corsairs for cover. If we start something, we better be able to finish it and we only have two carriers ready to jump in right now”

Vodan tapped the table top and mused over a diplomatic reply.

[Anansi Cluster to Saverio de Carreras. Why do the Corsairs feel the need for an inspection? That was not part of our arrangement]

“Make sure that woman is in her room and stays quiet, if she’s found then she’s the masters’ servant, not slave. They got a huge bug up there ass about them. Get everyone up too; I want them milling about looking busy. We don’t know how many are on that ship and I want to outnumber them”

Without waiting for a response from the Corsair ship, Vodan ordered two of the patrol ships to escort the visitor while the last wing-mate turned his sensors spaceward to look for more visitors.
10 May 2021, 12:42pm
Landing zone was near, and Ina was looking at the unpretentious views of small outpost, that lied in front of the ship. A pair of local Vultures, sent for escort, wasn't visible from the cockpit, but sensor showed them following close, at both sides and a bit behind.

"JB, I see them too", Ina said, looking at the sensor.

Keelback slowly descended to a landing pad. While she was looking calm from the outside, time had slowed down within her and these last seconds turned into a minute, with sounds dampened, thoughts stopping, feeling of awakening energy appearing. Long known mechanism of concentration was in effect. These last seconds were the most precious, but she knew that she needed to act to get the work done, making return into this state later possible.

Metal sound of landing gear touching the pad announced that next and the most intense part of this operation just began. Ina quickly got out of the seat, holding its armrest with both hands to deal with local low gravity, and then planted her magboots on the floor. She released her main ammo belt from the holding clamps and put it on: leather jacket, that JB gave to her, was a bit longer than her own, so the belt had to be placed under it. No serious obstructions however. Then the rifle. Release the clamps, sling the belt over neck and shoulder, check on the ammo counter and safety switch. 80. 'Safety'. Ready to go. Dozen of seconds passed after the touchdown, and Ina was standing near co-pilot seat and looking at JB.

"Ready when you are".
10 May 2021, 3:43pm
JB closed his eyes and took a deep breath. After a second or two he opened them and looked out at the small outpost. JB got up out of his seat and gave the bobblehead on his main console a little rub for luck. It was a small representation of Saint Malverde, the Saint Of Smugglers. Free Traders are nothing if they're not superstitious.

"Ok, take this in case we get split up," JB said as he passed Ina an in-ear communicator, "We've got to go in there with confidence, if they think for one second that we're not who we say we are then they'll lock that place up tighter than a duck's arse. They'll probably vaporise us on the platform too. I've linked my Comms Unit to The Cuckoo so we can trace the beacon whilst we're in there."

JB put his helmet on, tapping the side to tint the glass black. He passed Ina and led the way to the exit ramp at the back of the ship, stopping only to open a concealed weapons locker hidden in the wall of the corridor. He took out a large pistol and tucked it into the inside of the black duster he was wearing then continued his way out.

As the two of them made their way down the ramp they could see a small group of armed men congregating at the door to the outpost. After another deep breath, JB addressed them in a stern voice;

"Who's in charge here? His Lord, Prince Tharik Otoli, Viceroy of Daibais, believes you are harbouring insurgents and demands that we're free to search these premises to determine this isn't a foothold of a possible coup against The Imperial Corsairs!"
10 May 2021, 4:04pm
"Okay, let it be some confidence. Anyway, it's my only role for now."

Ina nodded and followed JB, also tinting out the helmet glass. Her role was simple while JB did all the talking. So she just walked at his side with both hands holding her heavy rifle, slowly turning her head left and right, looking at the outpost and the armed people. Trying to memorize any details.

"Classic private army of ragtags... They just gave them whatever can shoot, short-range repeaters, flak shotguns, pistols of all sorts... To put those grunts on every role, be it boarding, robberies, slavery or outpost defence. Yeah, they know what side of their sticks do pew-pew, perhaps even some shooting range training, but it's at best. Armed rowdy bunch... Numbers can be a problem though, and narrow corridors... Have to look out for good positions."

10 May 2021, 8:42pm
The ship took all of Vodans’ attention. It looked like a garbage pod with a cockpit and its own propulsion. He walked right up to the two people that had disembarked and were standing on the landing pad after barking orders at him. Still looking at the ship, Vodan didn’t stop till he was helmet to helmet with the guy.

“You come down here laying down the law in that flying rubbish skip and expect me to believe you represent the self-proclaimed prince fancy pants? We hashed out a damned agreement to be here so we didn’t have to put up with officials hassling us. That was the whole point of being in this system”

The heavy gun holstered at the small of his back was a welcome feeling after glancing at the size of the rifle the other one was holding.

“Now, if I have to wake up my self-proclaimed super-turbo-noble, he’ll tuck your heads up each other’s arses and use me like a bat to beat the pair of you to death of making him aware of you. Now, do you really want to hassle me, my boss, and all my insurgents, that by the way are still not enough to even bother your authority in this system, or are you Corsairs gonna tell me what you really want here?”
10 May 2021, 8:59pm
"Well, this one is interesting. Some kind of their sergeant, perhaps. Maybe. Still too afraid of his boss, but isn't afraid to talk bold. Yeah, JB's ship may be good inside, but making impressions is not the best part of it, really. At least our disguise is working. If these guys at the door and this one start shooting now, it's a matter of one short and one long burst to mix their guts and limbs together. But the hostage... And I'll be in the open here... Yeah, JB, come on, talk something smart."

Ina was standing still and breathing evenly.
10 May 2021, 10:32pm
JB kept his nerve. Being shouted at was better than been shot at. Sometimes you've got to puff your chest out, some times you've got to drip a little honey.

"That piece of shit?" started JB, dismissively gesturing towards The Cuckoo, "That's this one's punishment for losing a drinking game." JB nodded towards Ina. "Whoever loses has to pilot this nail for a week. Prince Otoli likes his drinking games."

It was looking more and more likely that things would start getting hairy on the landing pads... and they couldn't afford for the place to go into lockdown before they could get through the door.

"Look, mate," JB restarted, this time with less intensity in his voice. "My gaffer's busting my bollocks about checking this place out and I couldn't give a shit. If I have to go back then he's going to wake up your gaffer and, by the sounds of it, he will actually bust your bollocks. Let us in, have a look around, send a couple of holos back to show that you're sticking to your agreement and we can all go back to the lash... what say you?"
10 May 2021, 11:00pm
"Should I add something about this 'drinking game'?.. Nah. Every time I tried these slicky talks of their type, things went crap. I love to talk about some sincere things, but this... Definitely not my field."

Ina turned her face to JB for a few seconds and then resumed with her observations.

"All these constructions look cheap and... Old. Like they were abandoned and quickly repaired after some time. Can't say exactly... One big main building with artificial atmosphere, airlock doors can't lead to anything other, and heat dissipators are unfolded... Some storages, unconnected, perhaps no atmosphere inside, containers and machinery only... A pair of remote-controlled turrets, anti-ship type... Abandoned buildings, they were connected once, but I clearly see the damage and deterioration of corridors... May still contain something inside, but definitely not an atmosphere... So our guy could be only in the main building, unless they keep him in a suit and provide with breathing air, and I highly doubt it..."
