Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"As a matter of fact, Mister Stanningley," says Veronica, her frown returning, "Mikey is the reason for my being here today. I acquired him a little over two years ago, in the April of 3305. Up until then he had been an Imperial citizen in his own right, but a sudden downturn in his circumstances forced him into servitude. You know how it is, I daresay."

"Absolutely," Stanningley replies. "But I don't quite..."

"Mikey tells me that he visited Mu Koji as an independent pilot during April 3305. I merely wish to ascertain whether or not that claim is true. Not that I doubt Mikey's word, you understand. I trust him implicitly, but I have my reason for seeking confirmation from an offical source. Can you help me?"

"That information will be held on file, of course," says Stanningley. He produces a dataslate and turns towards Ridge. "You'll first need to complete a personal data access request form. It's quite short, quite straightforward."

Ridge nods.

"Very well. Let's verify that I was here."

He accepts the dataslate and begins to fill in the correct information.
03 Jul 2021, 2:22pm
"No, wait!" says Veronica, quickly taking the dataslate from Ridge. "Mister Stanningley, I came here in the hope that my enquiry might be dealt with 'off the record', as it were. To that end, I fear some further explanation is necessary.

"To begin with, I am not Mikey's first owner. I acquired him from another party, a man of considerable influence, whom I prefer should remain nameless for the purpose of my enquiry. Let's refer to him as 'X'. An associate of X delivered Mikey to me in Aymifa towards the end of April 3305. At the time everything appeared above board and perfectly legal. However, X recently contacted me with some startling news.

"You see, it so happens that X harbours a long-standing grudge against my family, for an indiscretion that took place many years before I was born. He now appears to be trying to exact some petty revenge by threatening to drag my name through the mud!

"According to X, Mikey was in Mu Koji when the transaction of ownership to me was completed. With the system governed by the exploitation laws of Princess Aisling Duval, I would therefore have been complicit in the illegal ownership of an Imperial Slave, no matter where I was at the time. Were X to go public with his allegations of my supposed impropriety, the scandal alone, would ruin me!"

Veronica's bottom lip trembles as her breath catches, and then she suddenly begins to sob.
03 Jul 2021, 5:05pm
Michael blinks, straightening himself, forcing his eyes to remain fixed upon his partner instead of rolling.

Pretty good at turning on those tears, aren't you Vayle?

He advances toward his former master, his every manner a paragon of concern. He again bows low, his Imperial accent even worse than before.

"You had no way of knowing. How could you? You must be brave, mistress. For us both."

Descartes"Bloody hell Samji ! When did you become Protector of the Galaxy?

Descartes and Gamwise Samji had been to the aid of a passenger ship broadcasting a distress call. They destroyed a Cobra and Viper in a storm of canon fire and sent another jumping away into hyperspace before a whole fleet came to help.

"I couldn't fly by and not do anything...My mother was a pilot for a transport ship and was shot down taking leave trying to come home. I'm sorry if my emotions got the better of me. I had to help those people. You fly and shoot well Descartes, I have a feeling we could become good friends. We seem to work well together."

Sam relaxed into his seat guiding the ship in supercruise and watched a purple planet with a small cyan ring pass by the starboard side of the ship.

"Always such a pretty planet that one."

'Pretty planet?' I shouted.

The fact was that I'd found it exciting and was angry at myself. Killing was against my nature.

"You could have disabled them, targeted their weapons and engines." I went on... "Is that how you make your money?"

I climbed the vertical ladder to the top of the flight deck and unzipped my Remlock suit. I was clammy and sweating.

'If you're gonna keep doing stuff like that we're gonna need a better ship, and I need more space, and I'm not sitting down there unprotected in a goldfish bowl."

I began to peel off my suit.

"Now find some gravity, I need a decent shower!"

Sam's small moment of relaxation died suddenly.

"DISABLED THEM?!? please, Pirates like that won't stop. I've seen how those people act. I've disabled ships in the past. And those pirates go sit in a detention center for a day or two and then they go back out into the black and do it all over again. NO, I will not be disabling wanted pirates. Sure, we both made some credits off of those bounties, But that's not how I make my money. Remember I've already made my fortune. I'm not looking to become a bounty hunter. I will not stand idly by while innocent women and children are trying to land on a planet their husbands and fathers just spent months colonizing. I'm sorry we didn't have a different ship, this was supposed to be an easy fly. I've got better ships for fighting. Believe me we will be traveling back in something more suited for combat."

He realized he was yelling and holding Descartes by the shoulder and wrist. He could see something in her eyes.... Fear? Excitement?

He let go. "Sorry..." Ashamed by his actions he let his true emotion and depression over the situation show. His face visibly shaken, sad. A tear began to streak down his face. He wiped it away as quick as he realized it.

She began to peel off her suit. He caught himself staring for a moment

(She's beautiful, and kind of cute when she's mad).

(Stop it! She said she's not looking for a companion like that).

"Now find some gravity, I need a decent shower!"

"We are set for the station again auto will drop us shortly. There we can turn in these bounties, get a good nights rest, a shower, and I'll have a ship sent over that is more well equipped for fighting in case we run into some more pirates. And you'll be right next to me on the flight deck. Not down in a 'fishbowl' *Chuckling* Ha, Fishbowl.."

Sam sat back down in his chair. He unzipped his vest. He was feeling overheated with all the excitement both outside and inside the ship.

(Now, should I have the Anaconda sent over? or the Cutter? Or simply just the Krait?)

He sat pondering which ship to have sent to the station while they got some well deserved R&R.
04 Jul 2021, 10:50am
Veronica reaches down and picks up her handbag. She plucks out a handkerchief and dabs at her tearstained face.

"Lady Rayshellanne," says Stanningley, "I sympathise with you in your evident distress. But surely, if you trust Mikey's word, then you have nothing to worry about."

"I do trust Mikey," replies Veronica. "Yet - forgive me, Mikey - an element of doubt remains. X insists he has documentary evidence that Mikey was here when I took ownership. He wants me to make regular payments to him in return for his silence."

"Blackmail! You should report the matter to the police at once."

Veronica fixes a cold gaze on Stanningley. "As I said a moment ago, X is a man of considerable influence. He has no reason to fear the police. I am completely in his thrall. I have not slept well for days through worry!"

"Well then," says Stanningley, pointing at the dataslate on Veronica's lap, "an official request would settle the truth of the matter within a couple of weeks--"

"I cannot wait a couple of weeks!" cuts in Veronica, a horrified look on her face. "X demands my first payment be made tomorrow! Once that happens, there is no hope for me. I shall have brought shame and disgrace to my family. And besides, what if your official request reveals the 'truth of the matter' to be that X is correct in his assertion after all? I am given to understand that the People's Princess takes an exceedingly dim view of any impropriety in her territory, especially where slavery is concerned."

Stanningley frowns. "Indeed she does."

"All I ask," says Veronica, leaning forward, "is a discreet peek at the record. No one else need be any the wiser, and I shall deal with the consequences of whatever we learn."

Stanningley rises. "Give me a few moments, Lady Rayshellanne. I shall return directly."

With that, the port authority official leaves the room.
04 Jul 2021, 2:32pm
The door closes behind them. Man and woman are silent for a moment as Stanningly's footsteps recede. Michael turns to Veronica, his voice low. His Imperial accent is gone, replaced by his more authentic indy edge. He raises a warning finger to his partner.

"I hope you know what you're doing."
04 Jul 2021, 5:11pm
Raising her handkerchief to dab her eyes, Veronica shoots a warning glare at Ridge and surreptitiously taps her right ear with the tip of one finger.

"Dear Mikey," she says in her cut-glass Imperial accent, "You know how much is at stake. I simply cannot allow that horrid man to blackmail me and besmirch the good name of the Polpennick family."
04 Jul 2021, 5:59pm
A knowing look flashes in Michael's eyes. He straightens himself, resuming his Imperial accent.

"Of course, Mistress. Though I've regained my freedom, nothing else is more important. Why, this could be the worst scandal to befall your family since your Aunt Victoria wore crimson sea pearls to the Aymifa Patrons' Ball! The negligence of her assistant to not inform her that crimson was the favoured colour of the senator's rival! And after such painstaking coordination, too!"

Michael scoffs with disdain.

"You know what you can do with you're bounty!" I shouted, making myself more angry and trying to wrestle my arms out of my suit, becoming even more frustrated. Eventually it was flapping around my waist.

I turned away and started off the small bridge, waiting for the door to hiss open.

"And don't assume I'm staying.!"

In truth, the quarters he'd provided were surprisingly comfortable for a ship that wasn't originally designed with comfort in mind and it had more weapons than anything in my own little fleet, and performed well in a firefight. After all, I kept my finger on the fire-button too. I began to calm down and got the suit off. Washed as thoroughly as I could in zero-G and began to regain my self control, still angry at myself. Still with a tremor of excitement in my belly.

A familiar voice in my ear. -

'You're no saint. Have you forgotten the Cobra you sideswiped rather than give up a fraction of your cargo? You could have soaked up everything he could throw at you in that 'Conda. You knew he couldn't survive an impact like that.'

I realised that Sam was really no different from me, except he knew what had happened to his parents. Both of us doing whatever it took to make our way in the world, instinctively reacting to every challenge as it presented itself and regretting it later. I certainly did things in the past that I was now ashamed of. Now, comfortably wealthy and able to determine our own course of action as we chose.

I managed to secure myself cross-legged on the floor with the use of a grab-strap and eased my left ankle on top of my right thigh, the right one on the left. Palms together in front of my chest, I slowed my breathing and began to clear my mind, allowing thoughts to come and go like a cloud with every outbreath. I was oblivious to anything that might happen around me.

"Quite," agrees Veronica. "The entire incident was by all accounts a rather sorry faux pas of epic proportions. Aunt Victoria was humiliated beyond endurance. Let us hope that Mister Stanningley can deliver me from surpassing my poor Aunt's misfortune. We would do well to await his return with dignity... and in silence."

Veronica dabs at her face with her handkerchief and heaves a sigh. A few moments later the door opens and Carter Stanningley steps into the room.
04 Jul 2021, 9:05pm
Stanningly again sits at his desk, straightening himself. His features are grave.

"Lady Rayshellanne," he begins. "I'm afraid that I have some terrible, terrible news."

His gaze shifts to Michael, disdain growing in his features. He snaps his fingers. A pair of armed Authority stride into the office, taking position on either side of Michael. He leans forward, contemptuous.

"And it's about your man here."
04 Jul 2021, 9:25pm
Veronica rises quickly, staring at the armed officials.

"What is the meaning of this?" she says. "Mister Stanningley, please explain!"
04 Jul 2021, 9:33pm
Stanningly folds his arms.

"Your man's profile came back perfectly clean. Too clean, given his tainted speech and roguish manner. So I did a little digging. Fingerprints on the slate, trace genomics from where he touched it... and the results told a rather different story!"

He rises from his chair, palms flat on his desk.

"Are you aware that this Michael Ridge was detained for unauthorized salvage? And on the same date range that you've specified?"

A final sneer completes his look.

"And that he wasn't even an Imperial citizen at the time? You've been manipulated, Lady Rayshellanne- but not by any mysterious 'X'. This man is a fraud!"

Veronica darts a glance at Ridge, then turns towards Stanningley.

"No," she says, her voice and manner calm. "I was not aware of any of this. Why should I have been? These events of which you speak occurred before Mikey came to me. If he did indeed commit the minor misdemeanour to which you refer, then that proves he was here as an independent pilot and not as a slave. As for his not being an Imperial Citizen, well... I cannot explain that. I can only presume that my blackmailer arranged for his citizenship immediately prior to placing him into servitude and the subsequent transfer to me. I told you that he was a man of considerable influence."

She moves towards Ridge, squeezing past the armed official. She takes Ridge by the arm, urging him to his feet.

"As for your allegation that Mikey has manipulated me," she continues, "I have never heard anything so preposterous in all my life. I absolutely refute any suggestion that Mikey is a fraud. He has been my loyal and devoted servant for over two years. I can see that we shall make no further progress here. Come along, Mikey, we are leaving!"
