Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Michael follows, sitting next to his partner, slumped over and shaking his head.

"What the hell is going on?"
13 Jul 2021, 8:05pm
Veronica places a hand on Ridge's shoulder.

"I dunno," she says quietly, "but I'm gunna find out. Let's recap; when you an' I first met at Citi Gateway, your ship was there an' all. When we woke up on Citi Gateway the next day, it wasn't. We 'ave reason to believe we went out in it on this mission of yours, a mission which we 'ave further reason to believe was for the Chapter'ouse of Inquis... look, I'm just gunna call 'em the CoI from now on, all right?

"Now, at some point between when we met an' when we woke up, the Misadventure went missin'. The Galactic Logistics rep insists they 'ad nothin' to do with it. If that's true, it means that someone, most likely the CoI, cooked up a document to convince you otherwise, not anticipatin' that we would bump into each other an' start puttin' two an' two together."

Veronica scratches her head.

"Thing is, we don't know for sure that the Misadventure really is in Colonia anyway. Come to that, we don't even know if it's still in one piece."

There is a moment's pause as Veronica gives Ridge an apologetic grimace.

"That GL rep's right, though," she continues. "We need to go back to Citi Gateway."
13 Jul 2021, 8:32pm
Michael forces a smile, looking his partner in the eyes.

"Alright," he says. "Let's get out of here."
13 Jul 2021, 8:51pm
"Ooh! There you go again!" says Veronica, rising to her feet. "So macho. Gives me goosebumps."

She smirks and walks away in the direction of the hangar lifts.
13 Jul 2021, 8:59pm
Michael chuckles to himself. His gaze drifts for the briefest of moments to Veronica's backside, her hips shifting from side to side in short, feminine strides. He rises to follow, his step a little lighter.

Goosebumps. Right.

Few words pass between Veronica and Ridge during the five jump trip from Mildeptu to Inara. Now, as the Smelly Egg begins to cross the gulf of almost 28,000 light seconds to Citi Gateway, Veronica lets out a soft sigh.

"I 'ave to be honest, Ridge," she says. "I'm beginnin' to run out of ideas. Comin' back to Inara seems like the right thing to do. It's where this 'ole mystery started, after all. But it feels a bit like clutchin' at straws. I mean, I'll give it my best shot, but I'm seein' slim chances of makin' a breakthrough. All I'm sayin' is, brace yerself for a dead end, all right?"

Michael shakes his head.

"And then we go our whole lives wondering what the hell we did to get mixed up in the Inquisition."

He chuckles, a low and bitter sound.

"Guess we could always fly to Kamadhenu and ask to speak to a manager."

Sell the ASP and buy a Viper?

Something was making me uncomfortable. It was all a little to relaxed and casual. Sam didn't really know me that well.

Maybe I'm suspicious by nature. I waited for my own Viper to arrive. It would be quicker.

The Old Man's send-off should have been a quiet affair, somewhere 'around the back of the sun'.

It was a long haul to Sol and I arrived too late. Making use of my permit for the first time I landed to refuel, get the latest news. A small fleet had turned up for the funeral. Several system authority ships had stayed as far away as possible from the usual compliment who, in turn, stayed well away from the more disreputable smugglers, pirates and worse. Each faction pretending to ignore the others as if they were not there. Each watching, making notes and logging ship signatures. I left as soon as I could.

I dropped into empty space to collect my thoughts. I couldn't take it all in. Couldn't believe it. The Old Man dead. The massacre on Sam's ship. Sam's survival. Four (now dead) men looking for me. Was it purely chance the made Sam choose that particular station?

A wide-awake dream. Inter-connected nightmare? Angry and confused the tears came, then cold, dark nothing.

Nothing - 'the absence of something'. It makes no sense. 'The Universe spontaneously occurred'. Makes no sense. The even earlier belief, 'In the beginning, God created heaven and Earth', it makes no sense. If God was already there, then it was not the beginning. What was there first?

For the first time in my life, I really understood my name-sake's often mis-interpreted 'First Principles'. Cogit Ergo Sum. I think, therefore I am . . .something that thinks. A good place to start getting my thoughts into order. Time to make a fresh start. First: confront Sam and get my questions answered.

There was no chance of getting there unnoticed. Whatever ship I arrived on there would always be someone who knew exactly where I was. In my Viper, I could at least make a fast exit.
14 Jul 2021, 7:12pm
"Yeah," says Veronica. "Yeah, we could do that, I s'pose. Mind you, it's odds-on that we was tracked on security cams all the way from Tanaka's office to the ship, so he probably knows I ain't a real Inquisitor. If he blabs to the CoI, an' we turn up at Kamadhenu askin' questions, I reckon we'll not only spend our 'ole lives wondering what we did, but we'll be doin' the wonderin' in the comfort of an Imperial nick. An' I 'ate prison food."

Making the necessary adjustments to heading and velocity, Veronica brings the Smelly Egg onto its final approach vector for docking at Citi Gateway.

(To be continued in the Docks)

Sam waited in the hospital room, wires tubes and an I.V. stuck to him.

God, I hate waiting around like this. If my wounds are patched up why am I still here?

As if they heard his thoughts a doctor and a nurse walked in. The Nurse began to check Sam's vitals and push buttons.

The Doctor chimed in, "Good news Sam, test are coming back great however I don't think you are well enough to leave just yet. Is there anyone that can take care of you when I discharge you? You will need some post care and I need to know someone will take care of you."

"Yeah."

I Hope...

The doctor then shifted and said, "Great, well I can't see it being more than a few days so... Oh and some men are here to see you."

And as he said it, three imperial detectives walked in. As they filled the room the doctor and the nurse left.

Oh Great, here we go....

"Good morning, I'm detective Lee, and this is Anderson and Kohatu. We'd like to ask about the men that attacked you," Lee said, very professionally and robotically.

Lee looked brand new, freshly ironed suit, brass shining and his boots were casting a glare off of the rooms fluorescent lights. Anderson and Kohatu appeared to be the seniors showing the new guy around. Anderson had a more relaxed look, still a suit, but jacket open and tie loose. Kohatu on the other hand seemed like he was undercover or something. Jeans, a T-Shirt with a leather jacket. His badge hanging around his neck like he didn't care who saw that he was a detecting for the imperials.

"Alright, what do you want to know?"

Lee continued in the monotone robotic voice," Did you know them personally? Do you know who they work for? Do you know of anyone who might put a hit on you? Or rather, your passenger? Additionally, who was your passenger, what did you know about her? where has she gone?"

The questions droned on.

"Alright, hold on, how many questions do you have? Am I supposed to answer or let you finish your grocery list? God, you sound like a robot listing hyperspace coordinates."

Anderson stepped in, "Alright that's enough Lee. Sam who were those guys who attacked you on your ship?"

"Honestly I don't know. As soon as the hatch opened they were on. It's like they were waiting for me to land."

"Okay, were they after you, your cargo, your passenger?"

"Don't know, they just started attacking so I defended myself."

Lee chimed in, "Uhm sir the docking footage show-"

Anderson cut him off, "Did they say anything before attacking, or they just started attacking?"

"They just started attacking. Hey am I being detained?"

Lee excited he knew the answer to something, "No."

Anderson punched Lee's arm.

"Great, listen guys this has been fun and all, but honestly I feel like shit. I mean, I was shot AND impaled so I'd like lay down catch some rest. Like junior over there said, why don't you just watch what CCTV camera in the docking bay caught and leave it there. You obviously already know more than me so..."

Kohatu waved the others out and simply put out his hand holding a stick of gum.

"Want a piece? I quit smoking and I found a new addiction... at least gum tastes good. Anyway, look kid we're hunting down a specific person who has a specific objective. If you know anything about these guys or what they were after I'd appreciate it."

Kohatu held out his hand which had a small comm link and a holo card.

"Here, take my card. And here's a comm link. If you find anything out about them guys let me know. And hey," He now whispered under his breath, "Let me know what you find out about that girl you were with. I know she's coming back. Something's not right. Why would someone hunt her if not you?"

"huh? What are you talking about? What do YOU know?"

Kohatu simply put a finger to his mouth and then said, "Just give me a call if guys like that attack you again okay? stay safe out there bud!"

Kohatu walked out and rallied his colleagues. Sam laid down on the hospital bed.

What do they know about Descartes that I don't?

When she gets back it's time for answers.

I don't need people hunting us down every where we go, especially if we go exploring outside the bubble.

A message came in, Attention your PYTHON has arrived to docking bay 17.

No other messages.

I hope she gets back soon. The last thing we need is imperials sniffing around.
20 Jul 2021, 6:40pm
I'd forgotten how much fun it could be flying a small fast ship. No deadlines to make, no particular place to be. Exploding out of hyperspace near an asteroid belt, dodging large rocks at high speed just because I could. I had fun. Eventually, plotting my course to 'the scene of the crime' I went to get my answers.

Arriving and docking without incident I made my way to the hospital. If Sam had left they might know where I could find him.

He hadn't left - told me about his visit from three Imperials asking first about the men who attacked him, (apparently the attackers were waiting for him to land and were on board as soon as the hatch opened). Then about me - what did he know about me, where I was now, was I cargo or a passenger. He held out a small comm link and holo card bearing the name 'Kohau'. It meant nothing to me.

"Let me get this right Sam. You just happened to put your ship down here, and four shit-heads just happened to be here waiting for me."

He shrugged his shoulders.

"Heck of a coincidence don't you think?"

"Why were they looking for you? What have you done to piss-off someone?"

If he was somehow involved, he already knew the answer. If not, then I had nothing to lose by telling him.

"I told you about a box of LTD's." Holding up a hand I went on. "Don't interupt. If it was more than one box, sometimes a big box or cargo container, maybe more than one, often, over several years, then someone might be pissed-off."

Silence.

"It's what I did. Salvage. Not always diamonds. Sometimes Void Opals." That was enough for him. For now.

"Can you walk? Lets get out of here."

"Yeah, I think I can walk. They haven't discharged me yet, so we might run into some nurse or something on the way out. here help me."

Sam began pulling off the cables and tubes attached to him. He pulled out the I.V. and wrapped it with a piece of blanket and then got dressed with a bit of help from Descartes.

The first few attempts to stand and walk were failures Sam ended up hanging onto Descartes for support.

"C'mon, I had my python shipped over here. It's got better guns and shields. And I've got some weapons on board in case we have more 'friends' show up. Which by the way I've got some questions about all that when we get clear of here missy. You're not telling me everything, which I understand to an extent, but when I put my life on the line for you I expect a bit more clarity. Look I'm with you okay? exploration trip or whatever I'm your pilot. I'd like to say we're beginning a friendship, maybe that's over stepping, I don't know. I'm still pretty high from the painkillers Ah--"

Sam doubled over in pain.

Hanging onto Descartes for support Sam said, "Let's go."

Heading down the hallways a nurse stopped them, "Sir you aren't discharged yet. you need to go back to your room."

"No that's okay, I'll sign whatever waiver. I'm well enough to leave."

Sam visibly limping down the hallway holding onto Descartes more desperately than he put on. The nurse said to herself, "Yeah sure..."

A little ways down the hallway the same nurse matched the pair's gate and had Sam sign a waiver of care.

Soon after the nurse called out to them, "Good luck."

Sam only responded with a raised hand.

"So, where to Descartes? The python is outfitted with a cabin for you again, and I've got some cargo and an SRV hanger."

Sam forced a smile through wincing pain and his now heavy limp while he hung onto Descartes' shoulders to stay upright.
26 Jul 2021, 12:52pm
"Unless you can walk without leaning on me, don't call me 'missy' !"

I found a seat, made him and wait, and went to find the nurse. Lying that I was fully trained, wasn't too difficult persuading her to let me have an IV line and saline. (I'd seen how it was done before).

We weren't far from the docks but it was going to be a struggle getting him there. I was almost carrying his weight. We rested before pushing and pulling him up the ladder and getting him to the bunk in his cabin.

I got out of my Remlock suit, took a reasonably good shower, (always better connected to a decent water supply), and looked for something to wear. Nothing. Wrapping a towel around myself I made my way to his cabin, found one of his t-shirts and a pair of shorts and put them on. Far too big.

He seemed to be asleep. I found a vein, inserted the needle, waited for a little blood to flow, then plugged him it to the fluids and watched him for a while. He was short of breath, his pulse racing.

I sat crossed-legged in the corner allowing myself thirty minutes to meditate.

It was hopeless. The memory of the ASP kept returning I was being jerked back to consciousness by Sam bleeding all over me. I still wasn't convinced that he'd put his life on the line for me. Sure, he'd lost a lot of blood, sure it was only the prompt arrival of medics on his ship pumping him full of plasma that saved his life. Even so, it was only his word that the attackers were looking for me - they could just as easily been looking for him. That would have to wait.

"Wingrove ATC this is Lakon Sierra Echo Alpha requesting permission to dock, over." McLaughlin eyed up his sensor panel as he approached the station and awaited a response. The vicinity of the mailslot was filled the usual FSS and traffic coming in and out of the station. Good, if I can't see them nobody can. At this point the Commodre simply needed to trust Tada and Tanaka would judge when the time was right.

The comms crackled to life, "Lakon Sierra Echo Alpha this is Wingrove ATC, you are cleared for landing pad one zero, how copy over?" McLaughlin responded casually as he maneuvered for an approach on the mailshot, making sure to go extra slow and straight today. "Solid copy Wingrove ATC, lining up for approach on pad one zero now, over." Now comes the tricky part. As McLaughlin approached the mailslot he deployed his landing gear and smoothly sailed through and made his way to his landing pad, gently touching down and engaging the mag locks on the landing gear.

"Welcome to our starport Commander we hope you find what you're looking for, Wingrove ATC over and out." With that being said the comms went silent as the port's authorities directed their attention to the rest of the traffic coming in and out of the station. McLaughlin checked the sensor panel and local comms traffic before getting out of his seat and making his way to the exit hatch of the ship, at the hatch he raised a hand to the comms device embedded in his ear and broadcasted three short taps before waiting and listening for a response. Two taps means they're still on the ship, Three taps means they're on foot.

10 minutes passed as McLaughlin waited anxiously for a signal from Tada and Tanaka, as the minutes passed by and the silence persisted he considered scrubbing the mission right then and there and making a break for the mailslot while he still had the chance. These thoughts were interrupted by his commlink crackling to life and three quick taps coming through before the channel went dead again.

The commodre breathed a sigh of relief as he wiped his forehead with the back of his arm. Thank Christ, thought I splattered them against the cage for a bit there. McLaughlin took a moment to collect himself before he went about his next order of business. Quickly ripping the Alliance insignias and patches off his flight suit, he replaced them with logos for an obscure shipping company that operated south of nowhere and specialised in who knew what.

McLaughlin hesitated for a moment before he undid the straps on his holster and left his sidearm sitting in a locker near the hatch. The feds on this station may be dirty but I'm an outsider, an unknown quantity. They probably won't let me take any contraband through customs without Barboni's say-so.

With these thoughts in mind a plan began to formulate in McLaughlin's mind as he exited the ship and started making his way towards the pilot's lounge.

Raglan sat back in his chair and let out a sigh.

He set a course for Citi Gateway and prepared for the first of the 14 jumps it would take.

His mind wandered to the last time he'd visited the station. It was only a few months but with all that had happened it felt like a lifetime ago.
He remembered the bar, of course. That was where he'd first met her. He smiled as he remembered covering her fast-exiting butt when the shooting started, how they'd visited the old man before heading to a few days of relaxation.
Since then he'd traded the Sidewinder for a Cobra, started trading, taken care of some unfinished family business and built up his bank account with a few well-chosen bounties.

Now he had decided it was time for another short rest, and he had good memories from his last trip to CG.
Of course, the chance of seeing Descartes again was slim.
Before they parted he had given her his comms code, but she'd never used it.
