Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I picked up my bag and slung it over my shoulder.

"900ly? Sounds like a good distance between us and 'Koshitsu'. I've never been out that way. It'll all be new for me. Sounds like a good place to start exploring. I'll take my things to the gym and try not to make it too cluttered so you can still work out when you'd like too. And there's a few workouts we can do together in zero G, jiu jitsu and aikido based, to keep us both on our toes."

I gave a winking smile and tossed another bag of instant coffee her way.

"I'll be back in a bit. Want to take us out of station?"

I took my things to the gym and found an empty corner to place my things and hang my hammock. It was stocked with plenty of weights and machines for a full body workout. I placed my yoga mat next to Des' mat in the opposite corner. I gave a smile at the thought of an actual gym. I hadn't seen one in years. I shut out the light and headed back towards the flight deck.

Everything about an Anaconda is huge, but launching one is the same as launching anything else, it just feels slower. Almost lumbering. Usually I took off manually and left docking to the computer - enjoyed guiding the ship out of the airlock that always looked too small. The sheer mass of the vessel absorbed much of the vibration, gradually increasing acceleration. The FSD was also less of a jolt - still massively powerful but more of an overwhelming continuous push than a kick.

You don't have to travel far away from 'the bubble' to discover unexplored star systems. Maybe not Earth-like worlds or new life forms, but there are still things to be found. After the first jump of 50ly I found three systems with asteroid belts, ice planets and metal-rich rocky bodies. OK, not particularly rewarding for cartographic data, but certainly worth a FSS sweep and mining - and always the chance of debris fields.

Sam joined me on the fight-deck eventually. After scanning the surface of a planetary body with pristine reserves I practiced landing.

"How about trying out the SRV before we get too far from civilisation Sam? You drive, maybe I can claim get a first footfall."

The truth was, I'm hopeless at controlling SRV's.
09 Oct 2021, 4:01am
Personally I love flying in larger ships. A broad smile appeared on my face as Des took us out into the black. The enormity of the Anaconda dwarfed a cobra coming into station as we were leaving. The first jump yielded exactly what we were after, new explorable planets and plenty of asteroid belts. It was beautiful.

Finally, a new start. And I'm happy to be out here with someone. I can see how it could get lonely out here.

Touching down very gracefully in Des' Anaconda, she looked over and said,

" How about trying out the SRV before we get too far from civilisation Sam? You drive, maybe I can claim get a first footfall."

"Sure thing, I'll head down and get it prepped, wanna do some scanning down there? Or just drive around a bit?"

I unbuckled the harness on my pilot's chair and headed for the SRV hanger bay. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and my stomach turned. It was as if my body was trying to tell me something wasn't right.

What could go wrong? We aren't that far out... Sure Kohatu could be not far, but would he really follow us out here just to kill me and Des? Maybe... I'll grab my rifle just in case something stupid happens

Grabbing my rifle, my duster and one of my jackets for Des from the gym I made it to the SRV and prepped it for launch. The planet seemed cold, I kicked on the heater so we wouldn't freeze. Looking at the jackets I brought with me I thought.

Let's hope it's not THAT cold out there.

I called over the intercom, "All set here," and waited for Des to join me. There isn't a ton of room in the SRV, and if it's not too cold we might walk around a bit. At any rate with me being so tall it would be cramped. Des would basically be straddling my back wedged into the passenger seat behind the driver seat, or she would have to sit on my lap. I'll let her make that decision. The second option would be the more comfortable option, SRV's weren't built for tall people that's for sure. Trying to get comfortable in the smaller than normal seat, I left the five point unbuckled and stowed my rifle next to me for ease of access.

I know it's been a while since I've driven one of these, but damn it all I'm getting taller or these things are being built smaller.
10 Oct 2021, 6:21pm
"Might be a good idea for one of us to stay on the ship this close to home for security. And in case you manage to wreck the SRV trying to make it fly."

No way I'm squeezing two of us in there!

."Come to that, probably a good idea all the time. Safer."

I rarely used an SRV when flying alone.

"I scanned the surface already Sam, nothing stands out."

Leaving the comms open, and leaving him to play, I unbuckled. It was near-earth gravity here, no atmosphere no cliffs to drive off. He should be fine. I changed into shorts and vest, my usual travelling clothes. Went to the gym for some gentle exercise with resistance bands. I groaned, Sam had slung a hammock across one corner. Too untidy. Taking it down and stowing away I cleared the bunk of exercise equipment, mostly unused, and re-commisioned it as a place to sleep as intended.

"How's it going out there?"
11 Oct 2021, 2:04am
"Yeah, makes sense. And fitting both of us in here would be laughable."

I started the launch sequence. With a muffled thud I was on the planet floor. The planet was cold, but I didn't need my jacket.

"I'll just take a few laps around the ship about a click or two out and come back. Everything looks good down here."

I started driving the SRV around. It was a dusty planet, but otherwise non-remarkable. Or so I thought.

Right when I reached out to 2 kilometers and began to turn around, something caught my eye. I stopped and looked around. Something shining in the distance.

A shipwreck? a limpet? A drone for a surface scanner? I wonder what's over there....

"Hey Des there is something out here about 4 clicks from the ship, I'm gonna go check it out. Looks like maybe a crashed limpet or drone."

Just as I began rolling the SRV towards the object in the distance the dust had settled and revealed it was a shipwreck. It must have happened within a day or two because dust was still floating around it, and there was still heat coming from the engines. An imperial clipper. It was mangled, torn and looked like it had seen battle. There were no trades marking on the ship, hell it looked as if it was bought at station and promptly crashed here.

"Hey Des, there's a shipwreck over here. It looks pretty recent. Engines are still hot. Wanna fly over here some and I'll look for survivors?"

Keeping within range of the ships signal I waited for her response in the light static of the open radio...
11 Oct 2021, 6:02pm
Not the sort of thing I was expecting to find. Heading for my cabin I began squeezing into a Remlock suit. Half hopping to the flightdeck I shouted over the open comms. link.

"On my way, don't get too close and stay in the SRV 'till I get there."

It wasn't just a hop and skip to move the ship a short way, and not my favourite pastime - it took a while. The SRV had its own I.D. on the short-range scanner, but crashed ships could easily be overlooked unless you were looking for them. This one didn't have a beacon, 'nor was it broadcasting on any of the emergency wavebands. Must have been catastrophic.

As I landed the dust thrown up engulfed everything like a raging sandstorm. It would take forever to settle completely.

"OK Sam, how about you go and take a closer look. Be careful!"

Using the time to get into work-clothes and heavy boots, 'just in case', and feeling like a bloated clumsy hulk - I could only stand on the flight deck and wait 'till at least the SRV was visible.

How long has that dust lain there undisturbed before two foreign objects turn up and disturb the peace.

I would prefer to stay on the ship rather than venture out. Hope there are no bodies on there.

I waited for the ship to land and the dust to clear, then I donned my duster and grabbed my rifle. Stepping out onto the planet floor dust kicked up at every step, but it settled back on the ground as quick as it kicked up. And the planet was VERY cold. As I looked around the star it orbits was slowing setting on the horizon.

I'll have to be quick... it's going to start freezing soon.

The ship was mangled, one of the engines was falling off of the main hull of the ship. The front of the ship was buried into the ground, a trench dug from where the ship had made impact to where it lay in it's now mound of earth it created around itself.

"I'll keep the comm link open, want to send off a message to local authorities? They most likely don't know this is here."

After a battle with the cargo hatch it fell hard onto the ground, a large plume of dust filled the air. Turning on my suit lights and weapon light I aimed a beam of light into the ship.

Nothing.

"Hello? Anyone in there?" I shouted into the ship.

Nothing.

Boarding the ship, it felt warm. As if the powerplant was still active. It was. Looking around I searched for the clipper's intercom. At last I found a speaker with a call button.

"Hello? Is anyone here on the ship?"

static...a click...then static again

"Hello? I heard the intercom click, are you badly injured? Can you make your way to the cargo hatch?"

static.... then another click... static

"I'm going to make my way to the flight deck. Click the intercom twice if you need emergency services."

static....click....click.....

I un-muted my link to the ship.

"Des, someone is on the ship and they need emergency services. Call anyone close by, and make sure there's a medical team with them. I'll let you know how bad it is when I get to them."

I kept myself unmuted so I could respond as needed. I made my way through the ship. Clearing, making sure it was empty, and searching every compartment there was for the person that clicked the intercom.

Nothing....

At last I was at the flight deck.

Someone was sitting at the pilot's chair.

"Are you okay? Was that you clicking the intercom?"

The person barely moved, but managed a nod. Walking over after clearing the flight deck I realized why they barely moved. It appeared that during the crash the canopy was compromised by a long piece of something, I couldn't tell what it was. I was more concerned about the end of it pinning this commander to the pilot's chair. Their suit was compromised, but the object sticking into them had managed to make an air tight seal. Making a more careful investigation, the object was a part of another ship. It looked old and rusted in sections. It must have been some floating debris in space, and this commander would have never seen it coming unless they were specifically looking for it.

"Des... I found them.... They are pinned to their chair by a large piece of debris that compromised the canopy. They are very weak and the ship isn't secure. I can't do anything for them..."

As I spoke to Des the commander weakly pulled out a rolled parchment out of their pocket and tapped me very weakly and slowly. Startled at first, I spun around. Realizing they were trying to hand me the roll of parchment, I took it and stowed it in my duster. Then I kneeled and held their hands that were reaching out for me.

"Hey, you're gonna be okay. We called for emergency services they'll be here soo-"

The commander pulled me in close as if to whisper in my ear.

The commander then fell limp. I felt them die and start getting cold, as if their soul left their body.

Taking a long sigh into the comm link with Des I said, "Never mind Des, they're gone. I'm heading back..."

The SRV docked just as easily as it launched. I welcomed the warmth of the ship, even though the powerplant of the clipper was still running the cold of the planet was encroaching into the open hull.

I called over the intercom, "I'm on, let's go."

The chance of anyone being remotely close was vanishingly small. Before I had time to broadcast a message, Sam called again, "They're gone."

I heard the SRV dock and the bay-doors hiss shut.

With the planet logged and scanned no-one would ever land on it again. No valuable reserves to mine, little to salvage from the wreck. Sam might have been able to remove the ship's data-log. No-one would decode it. No-one would come looking for the dead. The wreck would remain: forever collecting space dust. The thought reminded me how insignificant people are.

I couldn't stop myself flinching when I saw the amount of dirt and dust Sam brought onto the flight deck. Not for the first time I resolved to deal with what is an obviously unreasonable psychological condition that plagues me.

He filled in the details about what he'd found. It sounded harrowing. What are the chances of hitting one piece of space junk in the vastness of space.

"You get cleaned up and take a rest. I'll take off after I've checked that the SRV is secure." It was. On the way back from the hanger I stowed my work-clothes in the kit room. My Remlock suit in my cabin. Checked the ship's systems and took off.

As I reached the flight deck Des physically flinched at the sight of me. I was covered in dust from the planet below. I opened my mouth to utter an apology, but she shot out her order for me to get cleaned up and rest.

Well...okay...

I went straight to the shower. Cleaned my suit and hung it in the SRV hanger to dry. Then I cleaned the shower and her cabin from when I tracked in dust. After a quick shower for myself, I stowed my work clothes next to my bunk grabbed a pair shorts and a tank top then I headed to the kitchenette and made some coffee. Walking with two cups of coffee for Des and I, I had to perform a balancing act with two coffees in my hand while I used the key pad to open the door to the flight deck.

"Hey, sorry for the mess of the dust. I wasn't expecting to have found someone, let alone have them die in my arms...

Anyway, I brought us some coffee. Here."

Handing her the coffee and finding my seat I took a long sip from my coffee, instant, but still better then 3d printed.

Oh, god what I'd do to have a real cup of coffee. Real roasted beans, real coffee....

Recoiling from my coffee fix I sat up and looked over to Des.

"So? Where to next?"
20 Oct 2021, 3:29pm
I made a point of increasing the airflow through the scrubbers.

"'NGC2632'. I've changed my mind about rescue missions for now."

I'd set a destination roughly for the of the sector, planning to travel about half way, then get the route planner to find unexplored systems the rest. We could cherry-pick the most promising for water-worlds and Earth-like planets. Maybe even choose to do something completely different.

I softened a little.

"Thank's for the coffee. I really will give the 'chef a service, it does a pretty good job when it's working properly."

'Must do better. I thought. You really are unpleasant sometimes. Be Nicer!'

"You seem to be leaving a trail of dead people behind you."

Turning in his direction I had a flashback - the sight of him laying almost naked and unconscious on his bunk.

"It sounded as if someone was alive when you boarded the ship," I paused. "No last words from the pilot? Messages?"

You could give his shoulders a massage later. I zipped up my 'suit and buckled in. Plenty of time for that later.
24 Oct 2021, 4:05am
Descartes "You seem to be leaving a trail of dead people behind you."

I stared into my coffee at the statement.

I am leaving a pile of bodies behind...I wonder what she must think of me...I mean, the last bodies I left behind would have killed us, so it was kill or be killed, but still...

"I'm not trying to. It's feels like the cliche, wrong place wrong time, or however it goes. As far as the shipwreck, yeah the commander was alive when I found them, but died soon after. They tried to tell me something, but couldn't. They handed me this"

I retrieved the rolled parchment from my pocket.

"It looks to be the triple elite logo from the pilots federation and then a couple of star maps. I can't make out where any of them are though. there's no key, or label. Just the star map. My guess is that commander was looking for Raxxla. Poor fool..."

I sent the parchment to Des in zero G. As it lazily flew to Des I buckled in and sipped my coffee.

"Want me to take us out? How does the route look?"

Maybe when we get farther out of the bubble we can relax a bit. Des has had her fair share of the last few weeks excitement. She seems rigid, maybe I should offer her a massage... Maybe..

Finding myself staring in Des' direction I blushed a little, cleared my throat and sipped more coffee.
25 Oct 2021, 3:46pm
Catching the paper before it drifted past me before targeting the next waypoint I looked at the parchment. Certainly resembled a star-map. Wouldn't be difficult to check it against existing charts. Would make sense to try Sol as the initial viewpoint. Humans first looked a the stars from planet Earth, (Small Blue Dot, Goldilocks planet) from there.

'Wonder if I'll ever visit , walk bare-foot on a beach, see a polar-bear in the snow - are there still beaches and snow on Earth'.

I wondered how I knew that, how certain I could be about anything.

"I've got it all under control."

I sailed the paper back.

"Makes no sense to me. How about you create a schematic and let 'Celeste' check it against known charts. Use Sol as the viewpoint. Then tell me all about 'Raxxla'. Never heard of it. Worth following up?"

Sam shifted in his seat, looking odd. Guilty? embarrassed? Had he read my mind?

I stroked the controls. Engaged the Hyper-drive. Knowing every twitch, creak and groan of my beautiful ship, I instinctively reacted to compensate when the drive kicked in, almost as if nothing had happened. Few more explosive exits and I would be doing the same at the other end. No need for a harness or Remlock suit.

Sam, on the other hand...

I wasn't ready for the first large jump we made. Des looked so natural in her pilot's chair, leaning and shifting with each jump. The controls in her hand seemed to anticipate her every move and almost wait for her delicate, calculated perfect touch.

I on the other hand, because I unbuckled myself to catch the flying star map, was being tossed around the flight deck at every jump we made. It wasn't hard hitting, but every time I could move again, I only got a little closer to the co-pilot's chair before being thrown around the flight deck with anywhere between 3-10G's of force. I finally decided the just stay at the back wall until we came to NGC2632, our exploration heading. I gave out a loud boisterous laugh.

"HAHA, Thanks for the warning Des! But hey, I enjoyed seeing the flight deck from every angle!"

I couldn't control myself I was laughing so hard I began to cry. The thought of me bouncing around the flight deck was so hilarious. And I'm sure Des thought the same.

This is going to be a fun trip. Des sure knows how to show a guy around the flight deck!

Finally controlling my laughter I made my way back to the co-pilot's chair and buckled in for the fear of another sudden leap into hyper space. I started working with 'Celeste' and tried to find out where this star map lead. Starting from Sol.

"Oh and Raxxla, I wouldn't go down that rabbit hole. It's a myth, legend. Who really knows. Many say its a space station, others a planet side landing. Hell a few even say it's some kind of portal to another galaxy. There's a group out there, they call themselves the children of Raxxla. But every one of them I've talked to has a different theory and view point on what Raxxla actually is. Who knows, maybe we'll happen upon it."

I shrugged my shoulders. And right then 'Celeste' found something. The star map was incomplete. It needs more information, more maps. However, nothing in this map provided any kind of heading.

"Hey, 'Celeste' found something. This star map does start from Sol, good call. However, there's missing information. We need more maps. Or maybe it was just another clue, to find another clue to find Raxxla. I don't know. I'll study this a bit and let you know if I make any discoveries with it."

Could this be the beginning of a map to Raxxla? Could it actually exist?

Settling in my chair I looked ahead at the star shining a redish-orange hue on us and just as we began to fly in a curved pattern around the star something caught my eye. Off in the distance, something big, something seeming to fly around the star just ahead of our FOV.

"Hey, did you see that? I swear I just saw something fly around the star ahead of us."

Continued from 'The Sentinel Fulcrum, 3: Decisions Precede Actions'.

Disembarked. Looking almost like a casual visitor, I went to the camp, trying to get a few more glances on that Rumbling Pelican freighter, analysing the activities... No, no way to make a direct frontal attack, or just snipe the crap out of him from a distance. Can't see the guy, he must be somewhere around the main cargo hatch, working with the containers and machinery..Hah. Good disguise for someone from Imperial elites. Getting your hands dirty... But, hah, crew access hatch in the fore part was open as well. So...

Being covered by the massive hull of T-7, hidden from the eyes, I've made my way to the hatch, with the pistol in my hand. Can't use the rifle in those corridors... But they were empty anyway. Crew was, kind of...Careless? Yeah, who would be interested in that rusting flying box? Looks like my target was trying to look most casual too, without doing anything suspicious... And, that second guy? They both were careless enough. So, they may act as a team, or... He doesn't know about the secrets of his companion. Time will tell anyway.

Soon I've reached the cockpit. It was empty as well... So, I leaned on the pilot seat, to be covered by it and invisible from the outside, put the pistol back in the holster and took my rifle. 'Armed/Rds:80' on the ammo counter. Right hand on the grip, left on the handguard. Ready to rock.

Gravity was soft enough to hold the heavy rifle steady for a long time, but I let it hang on the belt. Firing from the hip at that short distance won't be a problem. Pointing the rifle at the closed cockpit door, I went completely motionless and soundless. The ambush was set...

The cockpit door opened, and Creamy electric slid through the doorway, dancing to the track playing on his ear-studs. He sashayed over to the co-pilots station on the left. After a spin, he landed in his seat, put down the bottle of cleaner and roll of blue-wipes he borrowed from the truck refuelling station by the landing pads. They had some fine dance tracks here, and Creamy hoped they would be staying so he could take a VTOL to a city and find out if the nightclubs were as good as the music.

Activating the coms, Creamy left a message for Commander Marmot.

“Commander, the cargo is unloaded, but our pickup is delayed. The roads are covered by mud slides, and VTOLS have been sent to lift the truck over the problem area. Let me know what you want to do, I’ll be ready”

“Studs play”

Picking up the cleaner, Creamy got back to signing while he worked. Now the Commander was away, Creamy could clean up his workstation without offending the owner. His sensitive nose picked up a new smell in the cockpit, something like seasoning. There were food rappers from all over the bubble; maybe the myriad of aromas had somehow managed to mingle into something nice.
