Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Ridge rises, doing his best to mimic Veronica's imperious demeanor.

The door slides shut behind them.
09 Jul 2021, 3:01pm
I'd almost managed not to think when a distant buzzing noise like a flying insect forced its way into my sub-consciousness. (Not that had ever seen or heard a real flying insect.). Gradually getting louder and more persistent it forced me back into awareness.

Sam was on the deck by my side, spurting blood from several wounds. He was trying to speak, holding out his communicator.

"Here, . .. the hatch.. . . message to station . . .4 Men . . . attacked first.

Had to defend...you...

...need...

to...."

He lost consciousness.

"SAM..SAM..."

I instinctively grabbed towels, clothes, anything I could to try and staunch the bleeding. It seemed to be coming from his neck, shoulder, stomach I wasn't sure. Blood everywhere in the low gravity. It was hopeless.

I shook him. "SAM!"

The next twelve hours or so was a blur of half remembered snapshots:

Noises coming from outside the ship. Realising we had landed somewhere I pressed the hatch release without thinking, regardless of who or what was out there. More noise, louder now, indistinct voices.

"Four down."

Someone was in the cabin doorway.

"Two more in here. A live one."

A figure in armoured security uniform, face hidden by a helmet. Shouting.

"Where are you hurt?" Again, louder. "Where are you hurt?"

Realising he meant me, I motioned towards Sam. "Him, not me."

Things became even more confusing, more figures, more raised voices. Someone was passing me a clean towel and one of my flightsuits.

"Get dressed!"

Looking down, I was covered with nothing but blood.

Someone had attached a monitor to Sam's arm. "Weak pulse. Low SATS." He was alive.

I was being lead off the ship. Four blanket-covered, man-sized figures. More blood than I thought possible.

I was in a medical facility, sitting next to a bed with Sam in it. Attached to tubes wires and monitors he was conscious. His injuries were deep and bloody flesh-wounds, amazingly missing vital organs and blood vessels.

He'd told me what happened. I'd told him what little I knew. Silence. He was falling asleep.

A small vibration on my wrist. I glanced down. Messages waiting. Wondering how I'd managed to get my Remlock suit off without removing my communicator, I remembered struggling half way out the suit in my anger on the bridge of Sam's ASP half a lifetime ago. Looking down at my colour-coded messages, one in red grabbed my full attention. The Old Man was dead.

What else could go wrong.

I shook Sam by the shoulder.

"Sam, I have a funeral to go to. I have a fast Viper at Jameson, do have anything fast closer? If so, I need to borrow it". I was unnecessarily abrupt and relented - a little.

"After that we can decide weather or not you're coming on my exploration trip."

It was harsh, I know, but it had to be done. Time was scarce.

"What hell are you talking about? " He asked. "No I don't."

"I'll explain when I get back."

He gave a lop-sided grin. "So you're coming back..."

"Keep walking," Veronica tells Ridge under her breath.

Together they march along the corridor, her heels clacking and his shoes softly thumping on the hard metal deck. Following the exit signs, they presently find themselves in the main reception area of the starport security centre. A few moments later they pass through the exit and into the concourse.

"Bloody 'ell," says Veronica, reverting to her normal accent. "I thought we were buggered there. Still, we ain't out of the woods yet. We need to make sure we ain't bein' followed by any of that knob'ead's goons. Come on."

Veronica leads Ridge towards the Entertainment district.
09 Jul 2021, 5:48pm
The entertainment district is a massive, loud, flashy attention grab for the credits of any and all passers by. There is no place to lay low under the holo-lit kaleidoscope of imagery, of smiling, attractive faces and oversized corporate logos. A dozen product jingles blend into a white noise of commercial chaos. Michael and Veronica, somewhat overdressed among the common civilians of the station, attract their share of gazes and leers, though the latter are more directed at Vayle.

Michael ducks inside an enclosed cafe, motioning for his partner to follow. He walks up to an automated unit and places an order for a chilled coffee, waiting as it thrums. He turns to Veronica.

"That... was unexpected. And why the hell did that guy think we were with the damned Inquisition?"
09 Jul 2021, 11:07pm
"Yeah," says Veronica. "Interestin' turn of events, that."

Ridge's chilled coffee is served, and Veronica places an order for a latte. The machine thrums once again, and moments later the beverage drops into the dispensing area. Veronica and Ridge take their drinks to a nearby table.

"So, what 'ave we learned? You came to Mu Koji in April 3305 and, as you'd already surmised, scavved some gear from a combat zone. Captain Tanaka mentioned somethin' about it bein' exclusive 'ardware, so you must've stumbled on some pretty sensitive stuff. Whatever it was, it was enough for you to 'ave been taken into custody as a result, with Tanaka handlin' your case."

She takes a sip of coffee as she glances around the cafe, appraising the patrons.

"Tanaka let slip that you were gifted some ship modules for your services, an' it seems pretty clear from what he said that those services were for the Chapter'ouse of Inquisition. He also seemed to think you're still workin' for 'em. So, if we accept that as true, then maybe you were on some sort of mission for the Chapter'ouse when I bumped into you at Inara. Maybe I saw somethin' I shouldn't 'ave, an' they decided to manage my memory of it - and of you - as a result."

Veronica frowns.

"But then why take your memory of it an' all?"
10 Jul 2021, 3:59am
Ridge looks up, his features dire.

"My memories," he replies. "And yours."

10 Jul 2021, 9:06am
Veronica nods and drinks her coffee.

"We struck lucky with the 'ole Inquisition business," she muses. "The Imperial Inquisition's a pretty secretive bunch, so it was a bit of a gamble claimin' to be one of 'em when Tanaka fed us the cue. Seems to 'ave paid off, though."

Taking another sip of coffee, Veronica glances around the room once more.

"I don't see anyone who might be watchin' us," she says. "We'd best not 'ang around, though. We need to get out of Mu Koji, an' the sooner the better."

She finishes her coffee and stands, slinging her bag over one shoulder.

"Drink up," she says. "Let's get back to the Smelly Egg. Keep yer eyes peeled for any signs of a tail."
10 Jul 2021, 2:50pm
Michael finishes his coffee, rising from the table.

"Let's get the hell out of here."
10 Jul 2021, 5:41pm
The pair spend a short time mingling with the crowds in the Entertainment District before taking a slightly circuitous route back to the Docks. It's not too long until they are back aboard the Smelly Egg.

"I reckon we made it without bein' followed," says Veronica as they reach their staterooms. "Get yerself changed an' up to the flight deck. I'll be along as soon as I can."

She disappears into her stateroom and begins to undress.
10 Jul 2021, 5:47pm
Michael nods, ducking into his own stateroom, stripping away the ostentatious suit. He secures it in his locker, shaking his head at the vibrant colors one last time before retrieving his flightsuit.

He emerges a short time later, looking like a pilot and not an Imperial socialite. He takes a deep breath, feeling like his old self- missing memories notwithstanding.
11 Jul 2021, 9:39am
After carefully packing away her dress, shoes and bag and removing her wig, Veronica dons her flightsuit and hurries to her pilot's station. She performs a quick pre-flight check and gains clearance for take-off from traffic control. Noting from her dashboard that Ridge is already seated in place, she calls to him on the comms.

"Right, we're ready to roll."

The hangar's landing pad hoists the Smelly Egg to the docking bay, and a few moments later the Asp Explorer emerges at speed from the access corridor of Carr Dock. Within a few more moments the ship leaves Mu Koji altogether, entering the swirling vortex of witchspace.
11 Jul 2021, 9:48am
Captain Tanaka watches the Asp leave from a commanding position in the docking tube, flanked by a pair of subordinates. One steps forward, his eyes downcast.

"We've monitored them on holo-cam. The ship they've entered is registered to a Veronica Vayle, not a 'Lady Reyshellanne'. Their facial features are an exact match. Shall we red flag this vessel?"

Tanaka shakes his head.

"No. Giving false information and impersonating an Inquisitor are crimes, but not ones worth going out of our way to pursue. We have our hands full with slavers and Marlinists. Let them go."

11 Jul 2021, 9:51am
The Smelly Egg exits hyperspace. The light of the star before them illuminates Michael's features. The man allows himself to relax. He keys the in-ship comms.

"I don't want to spend any more time in Authority offices than I have to. Let's not mix it up with too many badges anymore, huh?"

He pauses. "And thanks. For talking us out of that mess."
11 Jul 2021, 10:57am
Veronica chuckles.

"I 'ad fun."

Wasting no time, Veronica scoops a little fuel from the star and then engages the FSD to take the ship to the next waypoint.

"We've gained a few snippets of information," she says, "but still not enough to tell us what 'appened to us over the last couple of days. We know that we met at Citi Gateway, as witnessed by Atlas with the blue monkey. We can be reasonably confident that we left together shortly afterwards on some mission that you were doin' for the Chapter'ouse of Inquisition. An' we know we woke up on Citi Gateway the next day, with no memory of either the mission or of each other."

She shakes her head and heaves a sigh.

"We ain't got much more to go on, Ridge. Whatever that mission of yours was, the only people who could tell us anythin' about it would be the Chapter'ouse of bleedin' Inquisition, an' I don't fancy my chances of blaggin' anythin' out of them. I mean, a couple of minor starport officials are one thing, but a shadowy law enforcement agency workin' for Arissa? Nah, that's a badge too far, mate."

The Smelly Egg arrives at the next star. Veronica aligns the ship for the next jump, scooping a little fuel on the way.

"What else do we 'ave? There's the five million credits I was paid, with the word 'compensation' in Iberian on the notification. But the transaction was made from an anonymous account, so that's a dead end. An' then there's your ship, which is currently sittin' somewhere in Colonia, conveniently well out of the way. Maybe there's somethin' to be found there, on the Misadventure. Wotcher reckon?"
11 Jul 2021, 2:05pm
Michael considers.

"It might be our best bet. But there's no need to head all the way to Colonia. We can just hit the nearest GL office and check up on where it is. Given that my missing ship is their mistake, they'd probably be more open to looking into it than normal."

The man settles into his chair.

"Let's set course for the nearest decent starport."

Michael pauses for a moment.

"And no clown suite this time, huh?"
