Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Target Shields offline The A.I. chimed

"Yes, okay hold off for a second." Sam said as he switched panels and put all but one energy pip into the weapons.

"Now!" He shouted as he hammered the limping Viper with multicannon fire. A few seconds later the lasers pounded onto the hull of the Viper and a few seconds after that the multicannons ceased and the lasers beamed through the Viper as its hull silently, yet violently tore into two separate pieces in the black. The Vipers lights fading and flickering off as the ship itself seemed to take it's last breath.

Frame Shift Charge Detected

"Huh, the other viper must be through and running, good riddance."

The lonely Viper turned tail and began boosting away before jumping into hyperspace leaving a small blueish black wake trail behind. Suddenly a myriad or ships appeared: Vipers, Kraits, Federal ships, Imperial ships, 20 or so independently owned ships bearing a black and red symbol on the left wing.

"LAKON Golf Alpha Mike, This is Commander Rain De'Lumen of the Pilots Federation Black Dragoons Trading company Help has arrived commander. You may have sold the company to the imperials, but I bought it right back. Your father was a great man. I'm always happy to help you out kid. I got your wave and brought as much of the tradesman as I could. What do ya need?"

"Rain, good to hear from you sir, I needed to get away from that life. It wasn't me. you know that. I'm glad the company fell into the right hands. My father wouldn't want it any other way. Well my ship is doing okay, I'll need some repairs when I get to station, but otherwise we're okay. (Sam relaxed in his chair and unbuckled the arms of his safety harness) That transport ship needs evac immediately. Last I knew systems were failing and she was beginning to hit high orbit."

Sam switched channels and tried the type 7 transport...

Nothing, but crackling static....

Sam looked around moving the ship to see where the crippled ship had gone. It was tumbling toward the planet.

"Rain, I don't have space on my ship to carry passengers. That ship has women and children on board. Can you guys go save those people?" Sam said almost frantic with worry.

"Of course, all ships move out. Innocent passengers are tumbling towards that planet. Let's not lose a single soul."

Suddenly all of the ships were moving almost in sync towards the transport ship tumbling out of control towards the planet. Escape pods were exiting the transport in all directions. Each chip moved toward one and a few fired their own small remote pilot ships towards the ship in an attempt to stabilize the ship and board to evacuate the passengers. In a matter of 30 minutes or so the ship was empty and the trade ships were cruising back towards the brave little asp explorer that took on the pirates.

A familiar female voice came over the intercom

"Commander, you've saved us. I can't thank you enough. The women and children have hope in their hearts and a good man to look up to."

"I had help. (Sam glances down, his reflection can be seen in the ships canopy as a smile broadens across his face looking down towards Descartes) But please, don't think of me as some kind of fairy tale hero. I just saw the wrong being done and couldn't fly by and do nothing. Take it easy out there and rest easy."

Rain back on the intercom "You did good kid, And don't worry about the company I'll run it just like you and your Father did. You take care Sam see you out in the black."

The trade ships all turned toward the little planet's space station and began supercruising down to the planet.

Sam corrected his ship back on track to the station.

"Well, I've had enough combat and pirates for one day. How about you? What do you say we go to station get some repairs and maybe have a drink? On me. Sorry to pull you into all that. Like I said, I couldn't fly by and not do anything...My mother was a pilot for a transport ship and was shot down taking leave trying to come home. I'm sorry if my emotions got the better of me. I had to help those people. You fly and shoot well Descartes, I hope this little bit of...excitement didn't hamper your thoughts of hiring me for your exploration flight. I have a feeling we could become good friends. We seem to work well together."

Sam smiled as he relaxed further into his seat guiding the ship in supercruise and watched a purple planet with a small cyan ring pass by the starboard side of the ship.

"Always such a pretty planet that one."

(OOC: continued from The Docks...)

Little conversation passes between Veronica Vayle and Michael Ridge during the nine-jump journey from Inara to Mu Koji. The journey itself is uneventful. On arrival in Mu Koji, Veronica takes the Smelly Egg to Carr Dock, an Ocellus starport one hundred and nineteen light seconds from the star.

"May as well check the boards while we're 'ere," says Veronica. "You never know when somethin' interestin' might turn up. Then we can see about looking for this combat aftermath site of yours. If it's still there, of course."
19 Jun 2021, 10:56pm
Man and woman are bathed in the blue light of the station's mailslot as they pass through, transitioning from vaccum to atmosphere. Michael looks away, his mind drifting, for once letting someone else handle the task of landing.

"It's there," he says. "It was the battle that nearly plunged the Imps and Feds into real, actual war. And I know exactly why I'd have been out there."
20 Jun 2021, 8:42am
The pad's docking clamps engage with the Smelly Egg and guide it to a touchdown with the customary thunk.

"Yeah, you said you were scavvin'," says Veronica as she arranges a refuel from Ground Services. "But it's been two years, Ridge. Anythin' valuable will 'ave been grabbed long ago. I honestly dunno what you could possibly 'ope to find."

Veronica checks the starport's mission board, but sees nothing of any great interest.

Michael closes his eyes.

"The Misadventure has Prismatics," he says. "But I never flew for Little Miss Blue Hair. That means I scavved 'em from here."

Doubt clouds his features.

"I think."

"Mmm, yeah, bit of a leap of logic, innit," replies Veronica, now checking through the local traffic, crime and bounty reports. "If we could access the Misadventure's outfittin' log, it'd tell us when the prismatics were fitted. Unless you fudged the log for some reason, of course. You said the ship became yours, if I remember right?"
20 Jun 2021, 5:37pm
Michael rises, the Smelly Egg now landed. He remains in radio communication with his partner, making his way toward the main corridor.

"Long story. Let's just say that I never exactly went to flight school."
20 Jun 2021, 6:31pm
Veronica chuckles softly. "I remember you tellin' me that, an' all."

Powering down the ship, Veronica rises and joins Ridge in the corridor.

"Listen," she says, "I dunno 'bout you, but I couldn't 'alf do with a bite to eat. It seems ages since I 'ad anythin', an' my stomach's beginnin' to think my throat's been cut. Why don't we go an' find a cafe, an' you can tell me more about this masterplan of yours. I'll just pick up my jacket an' dataslate first, an' then we can be off."
20 Jun 2021, 6:52pm
Michaek looks downward at his Maverick suit.

"Guess I'll change, too."
20 Jun 2021, 7:27pm
A short time later, Veronica and Ridge, now similarly dressed in pilot jackets, cargo pants and boots, are ambling through the Entertainment district of Carr Dock. There is the usual mix of bars, restaurants, theatres, clubs, tattoo parlours and other establishments. Some of the trading names on the facades are familiar, others less so. There is also the usual mix of people going about their business or seeking pleasure. Or both.

It's not long before Veronica and Ridge are seated at a table for two in Miriam's Joint, a rustic-looking steakhouse just off the central mall. Miriam's Joint is unpretentious, reasonably priced and evidently quite popular.

"So," says Veronica after the food orders have been placed, "exactly what is the plan, then?"
20 Jun 2021, 10:00pm
Their drinks are served by a tunic-clad Imperial, a middle-aged man's head low as he sets the glasses down before the pair. He has all the mannerisms of an Imperial slave, dignified even in a state of servitude, yet clearly isn't.

Michael picks up his drink, taking a sip of iced green tea. He is silent for a long moment.

"We check with port authority," he says. "Anything they have on me. On my ship. This place is where my memories go hazy. Maybe they'll have something that I don't."

Veronica raises an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? An' just 'ow is that gunna work, then? You gunna walk in an' say 'Hello, my name is Michael Ridge. Tell me everything you know about me'? They'll think yer round the twist, mate."

She sucks on her lemonade through a straw. Their food arrives, deferentially served by the same middle-aged waiter who brought the drinks.

"Blimey! That was quick," says Veronica as she begins tucking in to her rib eye steak.

21 Jun 2021, 8:59pm
Michael waits until the food is served, and raises his tea to the woman in mock toast. Sarcasm drips from every word.

"Yes. That's the plan. And I expect full cooperation, because I'm Michael Paxton Ridge, Captain of the Misadventure!."

He cuts off of a piece of his prime rib, taking a bite, his mouth full as he chews.

"Or else."

"Yeah..."

Veronica screws up her face and sighs through her nose. Staring at Ridge, she pops a piece of potato in her mouth and chews it, then washes it down with a big suck of lemonade.

"Nah," she says, shaking her head. "If that's yer plan, then it ain't gunna work. You ain't in Pegasi, Ridge! This is the bleedin' Empire! You can't just barge in an' make demands 'ere. Imperials expect things to be done proper, with a bit more decorum an' class. No, I reckon we'll stand a much better chance of gettin' what we want if we use a more dignified approach. Somethin' refined an' sophisticated, like. Know what I mean?"

Veronica drains the last of her lemonade, sucking it up through the straw with a loud gurgling noise.

Michael considers. He reaches inside his jacket pocket, producing an Imperial identicard.

"That's the thing. I'm an Imperial citizen. Mu Koji is an Imperial system. I have the right to at least request an inquiry. Only..."

He looks down, rubbing his eyes.

"... only I don't know how I attained Imperial citizenship."
