Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Yeah," says Veronica, pausing the playback. "That'll 'ave been the side mission Púrpura said you'd decided to go on. She said you'd enlisted me to 'elp."

She resumes the playback, hearing her own voice angrily challenging Ridge about his plan to recover a Guardian Key from the beacon. Then there is the sound of an ominous beep on the playback.

Vayle: "Looks like we've got company, 'eadin' straight for us. An' some'ow I don't think he's gunna knock three times..."

Ridge: "The plan... the plan was for both. But things just got interesting. Buckle in, Katie. Change of plan!"

Vayle: "Ridge, leave the bleedin' key an' get us out of 'ere! That's a Fer de Lance out there--"

With a shudder, Veronica pauses the playback again and wrinkles her nose.
18 Aug 2021, 10:17pm
Michael narrows his eyes, glancing to his side at Veronica. His tone is even.

"Veronica," he says. "Why did I call you 'Katie' back there?"
19 Aug 2021, 8:55am
Veronica noisily sucks in air between her teeth, then clicks her tongue.

"Most likely explanation," she replies, "is that I'd told you it was my name. I do that a lot, when I meet strangers. Force of 'abit, like. Any'ow, it don't matter now. Let's crack on, eh? This Fer de Lance must be the bloke who was after the wotsit you were carryin'."

She resumes the playback. They hear the panic in their voices as the Fer de Lance attacks, and the subsequent relief as the Misadventure escapes into witchspace. Minutes later they hear their relief turn back into panic as the Fer de Lance evidently reappears for a second attack, prompting another narrow escape. Veronica grimaces as she listens to herself vehemently accusing Ridge of trying to con her. Then...

Vayle: "Some straight answers would be nice, Ridge. You can start by tellin' me where the ruddy 'ell you're takin' me."

Ridge: "We're heading to a Thargoid structure. A big one. Active. And what do you know about AI?"

Vayle: "Artificial Intelligence? Comes in two flavours, dunnit. Banned an' Not-banned--"

Veronica stops the playback, and stares up at Ridge.

"Are you thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?"
19 Aug 2021, 11:49pm
Michael exhales, rubbing his eyes.

"We... we were involved with artificial intelligence?"

The man rises, pacing and running his hands back through his hair.

"It's a goddamned wonder that we're alive."
20 Aug 2021, 8:13am
Confirmation of their suspicions comes within the very next segment of the playback, as Ridge describes a previous encounter with an actual AI android. The scorning disbelief in Veronica's voice is very clear, unwilling to accept that 'the bloke in the Ferdie is an AI' on account of their mythical status.

Vayle: "Blimey. Righto then, let's s'pose I buy your story. I ain't saying I do, mind, but let's just suppose. You say it's a lot to explain. So okay, I'm listenin'. Off you go."

Ridge: "Awhile ago I got caught trying to scav a Prismatic generator in Mu Koji. Ended up being given a choice: the mines of Laedla or dirty work for the Inquisition. So I made my choice. Went down the rabbit hole. Leaned some things that I shouldn't have. That thing that's following us isn't the AI. Not exactly, anyway. The real core of the AI... is in the cargo hold."

Vayle: "I'll assume that you ain't referrin' to the beer. Carry on."

Ridge: "The mission was an experiment. See how the AI reacts to being around native Guardian tech. Time was always short, especially if one of its lackeys picks up my trail..."

Veronica pauses the playback.

"And evidently it did. Bloody 'ell, Ridge."
20 Aug 2021, 3:42pm
Michael's expression darkens.

"Guess that explains what happened to the Misadventure."
20 Aug 2021, 4:31pm
Veronica nods.

"Púrpura told us as much. This is bleedin' weird, innit? Listenin' to ourselves 'avin' an 'ole conversation with no recollection of it whatsoever. Fuckin' creepy."

She resumes the playback. They hear Veronica give a terse recap of Ridge's mission, followed by a question...

Vayle: "Tell me about these associates of yours, Ridge. Who are they? What are they doin' messin' around with illegal AI? Exactly 'ow did they get 'old of it in the first place? An' pr'aps even more importantly, why ain't we makin' a beeline for your associates instead of 'eadin' for a ruddy Thargoid 'ive?

Ridge: "You think they just hand me a holodoc of all their deep, dark secrets? Let me look at their identicards? I'm just the field help. Suffice to say that once they've sunk their hooks into you, they stay sunk. They would call themselves freedom fighters. Those in charge would call them criminals. Your everyday Jill would call them wackjobs. But whatever they are, it won't do any good to drag this thing right to their doorstep for them to reason with. That's been tried before. It... failed."

Vayle: "I bet you're wishin' you'd chosen the mines now..."

Veronica pause the playback once more.

"Well," she says softly, "I think we know, with a fair degree of certainty, just 'ow you felt about your little arrangement with the Chapter'ouse."
20 Aug 2021, 4:36pm
Ridge leans against a bulkhead, supporting himself with one arm, his head down.

"That does sound like me. I'm not one for debts, credits or otherwise. Sounds like the Chapterhouse had me by the balls."

"Hmm..."

Veronica resumes the playback, in which Ridge gives Veronica an outline of what lay ahead, beginning with a chilling warning.

Ridge: "We're probably going to die, so... I might as well tell you. My... associates... are pretty damn sure that human AI is built on salvaged Guardian AI. And we're not talking circuit boards and transponders. This tech, well... it lives in subatomic space, everywhere and nowhere, time and distance having no meaning. The only thing that was ever any good at killing it was exposure to active Thargoid biomechanics. So that's what we're doing. But to actually do it?

"Well, first we land in the middle of a structure built by insectoid beings that have a history of wanting to kill us. Then, we go inside and hope that nothing kills us. Then, we locate the central chamber and hope that plugging in the relic doesn't kill us. All while shaking the AI minions who are trying to kill us. What could be simpler?"

"What indeed?" asks Veronica, pausing the playback. "We obviously 'ad no idea that Pùrpura an' Andor were in the neighbour'ood doin' their guardian angel act. If you'll pardon the expression."
20 Aug 2021, 6:46pm
Michael shakes his head.

"Still don't know what to make of those two. They seem... content with all the cloak and dagger. But they helped us out in more ways than one."

"Yeah. Yeah, funny that, innit," says Veronica, frowning thoughtfully. "Remember what Púrpura said earlier, up in the bar, about 'er an' Andor not bein' our enemies? An' that they 'adn't been the ones what gave us the 'exedit? It's like she wasn't on board with that plan, know what I mean? Whoever did manage our memories, I reckon Pùrpura ain't a fan."

She resumes the playback. Veronica's voice is heard to rant, the woman still doubting Ridge's claims. Then comes the sound of the Misadventure landing, and Veronica and Ridge leaving the flightdeck. Then silence.

Until...

The sounds of the ship taking off, and the roar of weaponfire.

Ridge: "Why can't it ever go smooth?"

Vayle: "The crafty bastard! Ridge, never mind the bots. He's just using 'em as decoys to waste our time. Target his ship an' let her 'ave it, before he gets it in the air."

Ridge: "Godsdammit! Get some!"

Vayle: "He's on board! Keep firin', Ridge. He mustn't be allowed to take off! Use yer missiles! Give him everything you've got!"

Pausing the playback, Veronica consults the log's systems readout.

"Multicannon," says Veronica. "Plenty of it. Missiles an' all. We got into a fight on the surface, by the sounds of it. An' what's that about bots as decoys?"

20 Aug 2021, 10:42pm
Michael is silent for a moment.

"The AI had help. Lots of it. And a hell of a ship to withstand a barrage from the Misadventure."

He looks at Veronica.

"Garish, uncaring machines, marching to an AI's orders. Just like the bedtime tales."
21 Aug 2021, 9:34am
Veronica looks again at the systems readout.

"It says 'ere that two SRVs left the Misadventure, but only one came back. Wonder why that was? Destroyed or incapacitated on the surface, presumably. Let's keep listenin'"

She resumes the playback. She and Ridge hear their failed attempt to destroy the grounded Fer de Lance, followed by their hairsbreadth escape and flight to neighbouring systems. Then, in response to a question from Veronica, Ridge gives a description of the Artificial Intelligence; virtually indestructible, capable of surviving in subatomic space, drifting to their next host; 'a threat to all humanity'.

Ridge: "The Guardians and Thargoids, they... they've evolved to annihilate each other. Fought wars that would make an Imperial/Fed slugfest look like a catfight. We're talking genocide, total destruction, apocalypse-level stuff. The Guardians' AI was their finest weapon against them, and succeeded where they couldn't. But the Thargoids still evolved to fight them. If anything can kill an AI–really kill it–it's Thargoid tech. So if we throw this thing into one of those chambers where something Thargoid would normally go, the thinking is that it'll trigger a defensive reaction. That 's why we needed to go to the structure. Now we're back at square one."

"Blimey, Ridge," says Veronica, pausing the playback, "you weren't 'alf in some deep shit 'ere, mate."

21 Aug 2021, 10:24am
Michael looks up.

"Me... and you."

He chuckles, a low and bitter sound.

"You had me going with a fake name. I dragged you into being a pawn in a whole 'nother level of trouble. Guess we're even, huh?"
21 Aug 2021, 12:42pm
Veronica wrinkles her nose. She resumes the playback, picking up from where it left off.

Vayle: "Noted, mate. Noted. It seemed a good idea at the time, y'know. Attackin' Andy the Android's ship while it was sat on the ground, I mean. I knew Ferdies were good, but that... Only I don't do ship combat, see. I generally run away from it in my line of work..."

"Ooh," says Veronica, pausing the audio, "sounds like it was me what bollixed things up. Still, we obviously got back on track some'ow, so..."

She resumes the playback.

Vayle: "All right. We're goin' back to that Thargoid structure. Let's just 'ope that Andy's little 'elpers ain't awake an' waitin' for us to turn up, eh? Unless...

Ridge: "Yeah. Maybe they called it a day, huh?

Vayle: "Yeah. Maybe."

For a while only the sounds of the Misadventure in flight are to be heard. Then...

Vayle: "So far, so good. I wonder 'ow long it takes Andy to get back 'ere."

Ridge: "Is that his name now? 'Andy'?"
