Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Seeing a man just..dancing into the cockpit, completely unaware of my presence... Hah, really. He was totally captivated by the moves of his own feet, listening to the music. So, I was..not just a bit confused, but also thought like, hey, guy, you're lucky. Any other merc would've pressed the trigger, making some see-through holes in your torso. However...

"Hands in the a... Aaah, dammit", he was not just unaware, but completely in his own world, moving to the co-pilot seat near the door. So, still standing tall and pointing the rifle at him, I've tried to sound louder. "You! Maximillian-something! Stop right there!"

Safety switch was on 'automatic' and finger was on the trigger, but, hm... That was definitely strange.

After spraying everything he had to touch, Creamy ripped off a long length of blue-cloth ready to wipe down his station. Between the roll and the strip of cloth Creamy had ripped apart, he saw a figure standing upfront of the cockpit. It was a tall person with a long rifle pointed at him.

As his hands were already spread, he dropped the roll and strip of cloth, then raised his hands. He thought it would probably be a good idea to stop moving with the music too.

“Studs off” He said quietly to kill the music while smiling at the gunman “Um, hello there. If you're security, it’s alright; I work for Commander Marmot”

Looking again, Creamy could tell this wasn’t and gunman. His almost perfect recall for attractive women he knew started piecing together the evidence. That figure holding that particular weapon was very familiar. Leaning over to the right, quite a lot, Creamy tried to get a look at the woman’s face while her name was coming up from recall.

“Do I know you?”

Sudden..spark of a thought hit me. Like.. Like I'd seen that face before. That..Well groomed, smooth face, more suitable for a movie actor, of that...carefree never-bothered bon vivant type. And... Isn't he too young for being a powerful Imperial figure? A target for half-billion assassination contract? Maybe..Some inheritance-related mess? No, something just doesn't add up here. And, that face, anyway... Like, I'm quite bad at remembering faces, voices, names, all that stuff, but..Was it not too long ago? Where? Under what circumstances?

Still. I have to be concentrated. Shaking off those thoughts with a slight "hmmm", I replied. With my answers. As I was...More in the position to ask.

"And do I know you? You look familiar", I said, still pointing the rifle at the poor guy. But..Kind of..Removing my finger from the trigger. Really, really have to know what's happening... From all points of view. Brainless shooting is what I don't want to do. Ah, makes me a crappy assassin, I guess. But I'm not trying to be one. So..then I decided to reveal some details, ask about important stuff. Those Imperials... Most of their nobles are wicked spoiled power-hungry scumbags, but..Not everyone. "Anyway, I'm here to..you may guess. What do you know about Herthans Labour? Why you're their target? What's your position in the Empire?"
31 Oct 2021, 1:47pm
After the first ‘hmm’ Creamy know who he was talking to, but that didn’t make him feel much better. Last time he saw her, the glowing barrel of her weapon and stand off-ish attitude had helped the woman stick in his memory.

Meowers "Anyway, I'm here to..you may guess. What do you know about Herthans Labour? Why you're their target? What's your position in the Empire?"

Creamy decided to answer those questions in order.

“Noting. Haven’t got the faintest idea, and missing, presumed scandalous” he finished with a self-satisfied smile.

Last time Mrs Muir had seen him, Creamy was not at his best, but he still didn’t like being forgettable. Perhaps Mrs Muir needed a reminder, and Creamy genuinely wanted to know how his fellow captive had got on.

“How is Jacqueline getting on by the by?”
31 Oct 2021, 2:18pm
"Ow. The heck. Is that you?"

Now that puzzle just had resolved itself, in an instant. That guy... He was the second hostage on Lozin. That damned place where I met Jacqueline. So..so much unexpected things. I lowered the rifle and leaned on the back of the pilot seat, with my arms folded across the chest. And looked down..a bit. As far as I remember... Well, I've probably made this person upset by speaking wrong words at the wrong time, because..Uh. You know. Sometimes thoughts are faster than words. Sometimes you don't have a chance to say everything right. So.. Trying to speak slower and calm, I replied.

"She's doing well. Receiving in-patient treatment after..what she's been through. She has a new ID now... And will start the PilotFed training as soon as she... Get better. Was helping her with..that. But, you? You know, they placed a target to your arse. Half a billion creds, and... That's odd. What have you done? Why that... Maximillian-something-Cartier disguise? And that job?"
31 Oct 2021, 3:37pm
“I’m endlessly pleased to hear that Jacqueline is recovering. I did my best to put on a brave face for her while we were forcefully detained, but think I knew what was coming and couldn’t see a way out, so my optimistic perseverance was sawley tested”

Creamy took a seat and put his work booted feet up on the dormant console. He gestured for Mrs Muir to sit in the pilots.

“As for the name Maximillian Philippe Joubert-Cartier, it’s simply a name to use, and a bit of a description if you understand French what? The job is a side-effect of that trouble you and BC pulled me out of”

Creamy interlaced his fingers and stapled his indexes with the strain of recollection.

“Ya’see, while I was still in-flight with you, I was sacked by the company I worked for once I made contact to let them know I was alive. Safety concerns for the passengers I would be entertaining don’cha know. Fair enough if you ask me” admitted Creamy knowing that the people after Nerys were as tenacious as they were deadly.

“Also, Sovereign Shield we’re only authorised to take me to the Silver Mountain Clinic, and as that would put me in the care of my family; it was out of the question. Their representatives gave me a medical and left me, much as yourself and AC did, on the dock”

Aware he was rattling on, as he often did, Creamy addressed his companion in turmoil.

“I say, I’ve been told there is a nice little mess-hall-come-caff that serves mostly food grown here. We could take a wonder down there if you are not intent on shooting me today. Umm, that is if you’re not intimidated by the sky. I know some spacers can’t deal with not having some sort of roof above them for very long. What do you say Mrs Muir?”

Lily, reading that last bit:
Ohh, she should've sealed the herbs and popped the canopy before entering atmo... this is gonna be interesting.
31 Oct 2021, 5:14pm
I looked at the pilot seat... Examined it... Counted the stains... And said a quiet, but recognisable "eeew". Hah. No way I'll be sitting on that...ugh. So, I remained standing. And well, perceiving slight tints and expressions in other's voices wasn't my best too, but, from what I've seen and heard... He's not angry at me..enough to throw something, like a used cleaning cloth, in my face, or start a fight, hah. Uh, that was good. However, the contract, the details... I was trying to process all the information while being concentrated on the important things.

"She will be..fine. That clinic is a good place", I said, and then looked into Creamy's eyes for a moment, "Trust me. See, physically she's good..almost. Weight loss, weakened immunity, all that, but nothing too serious. However... Her mind is...you may guess."

But then I 'catched' myself..to prevent talking too much and for too long.

"As for the mess hall... Sure. Maybe I'll have a chance to...apologise and explain stuff. Seems like...your life went crappy enough. And you're not the one of those spoiled power-hungry arseholes...", ah, thoughts were running back and forth in my head and I was trying to stay short and laconic enough without..errrm...Screwing up as I did that before. "Anyway, while we are in this..uh. Cockpit. I mean, no ears around. Let's sort out that contract questions."

Then I've made a few steps towards Creamy and continued my speech, making it a little quieter than usual now. Almost whispering.

"See, that... Herthans Labour gave me a contract. Especially for me. Half-billion creds. Weird, huh? I mean, they're just a labour union, and... That money? And it was marked as a secured transaction, so... They actually have that money. So, they wanted me to eliminate a... powerful Imperial figure, who may have a private army. Hah. It was you", I pointed a finger at him and made a sarcastic grin. Yup... That was already sarcastic enough. And then... Yeah, the interesting part. "And then to retrieve something from an abandoned ship, floating in the middle of nowhere. Anaconda or something, big ship. And.. I have the coordinates. How that might be... Connected to you?"

"Hey, did you see that? I swear I just saw something fly around the star ahead of us." Sam asked.

I was trying not to laugh too much:

"No. Didn't see anything. I was busy flying the ship while you were getting some gentle exercise bouncing around like a baby off the bulkheads. You sure you're not seeing spots?"

It was almost cruel of me to let the laws of physics toss him around like that. But it was unlikely that he would be injured, and it was fun. (In fact, Sam wasn't being 'tossed around', he had a tendency to stay in one place while the ship bucked and jumped around him). I gave him time to sit down and buckle up. A couple more jumps and we could start plotting our exploration route.

"Nothing showing up on the scanners. Shouldn't be much out here. If its in front of us then, unless it's precient, its at least not following us."

We could ignore it - the sensible thing, since it was no simple matter trying to catch up with it. We could be paranoid and behave as if it might be a threat.

"Keep an eye out for it while I scoop up a few tonnes of fuel. Nothing will show up among this background radiation."

Creamy nodded, he had wished he could have done more for Jacqueline than pretend he wasn’t in fear for their lives and pretend he was going to find a way to escape before the men used her to make Creamy give up what he knew about Nerys.

Meowers
"As for the mess hall... Sure. Maybe I'll have a chance to...apologise and explain stuff. Seems like...your life went crappy enough. And you're not the one of those spoiled power-hungry arseholes... .. Anyway, while we are in this..uh. Cockpit. I mean, no ears around. Let's sort out that contract questions."

Creamy remembered the vailed accusation Mrs Muir had made, and the way BJ had treated Creamy, like a person that needed an eye kept on him. A genuine apology was always accepted, and Creamy wasn’t going to make this young lady feel uncomfortable over some snap judgments made at a difficult time.

The erstwhile gunwoman mentioned that labour union again, it meant nothing to Creamy, but he wished he could be of more help to Mrs Muir now she was in a bit of a situation. It sounded like this labour union had made a mistake and sent her after the wrong chap. Then Meowers mentioned a lost Anaconda. Creamys' brow furrowed and his eyebrows pressed in hard as his memory was pushed into service again.

“Have you found my mining ship? Aisling stars, I lost that years ago.. ..Oh Bugger, that means your employers could very well be after me and I can’t have them hurting Marmot or anyone here trying to get to me”

Standing up, Creamy cracked his knuckles and fixed his beast ‘I’m about to ask a big favour of you’ smile on his face.

“Take it ya got a fast well-armed ship here abouts? Think we better get a wiggle on in case things get indiscriminate what?”

While Creamy waited for Mrs Muirs’ answer, he was already formulating his warning and apology to Commander Marmot.
31 Oct 2021, 8:06pm
Seeing how abruptly that 'never-bothered' expression on Creamy's face disappeared, I've instantly thought about, yup, making things happen in a bit... more hurry. Don't like it, actually, but sometimes I just have no choice, if I'm up to doing my best. And...I don't see any reason even to start, if you're not going to do your best. So, let it be another batch of useful situation-related information. I've put the rifle behind my back again, switching it into the safe mode and reached the console of this T-7, looking through the cockpit glass.

"Of course I have. A Fer-de-Lance, Grade 5 engineered...everything. Can't say she's fast with hyperjumps, but, as a combat vessel, she's unbeatable", I said, trying to see Marshmallow from here, however, she was too far away and almost hidden from the eyes by a hill and high grass. "We could leave now and discuss that stuff during the flight."

Then... Yeah, had to say another important thing. About that faction that seemed like... a facade of sorts. No way those simple folks could place such a massive contract. They simply don't have anything to protect for that cost, or take a revenge for. So, I was speaking...Fast. Still with my usual flat voice and completely neutral expression, but fast. Facing Creamy again, I continued.

"Not me. The faction. Or someone behind them. They found that ship and gave me the coordinates. With the contract. Also some photos from far away. Can't figure out why they couldn't get closer. The ship was inactive. So, contract has two parts. About you and about that ship", and then I remembered about that mess hall. "We still could take something from that mess hall, or, I have some basic travel snacks onboard. It's quite spartan, but you won't get hungry. So... should we go?"

Meanwhile, Lily is leaving for Colonia, carrying a gift from the Chilton Co-op.

Creamy pantomimed his disappointment at making a sensible decision while he activated the coms once again to type a message to Marmot.

“As much as it pains me to pass up an opportunity to eat some fresh, honestly grown food, I think we should leave in case someone else is on my trail. Enough people have been harmed thanks to a lose connection to me. Besides, judging by that savoury aroma on you, your ships' menu seems most attractive”

With the message typed and sent, Creamy headed for his cabin to pick up the few bits he wanted to bring with him, gesturing for Mrs Muir to follow.

“Once we’re up and out of turret range, I’ll let local security know they may get uncouth visitors looking for me. Best leave that till we are away, what? Don’t really want to hang about answering questions”
31 Oct 2021, 10:18pm
...Quickly we made our way to Marshmallow. Ship was standing on the landing pad, with engines still warm, and the dense air of Lushertha A1 was swirling in the heat haze around the nozzle casings. Good. We won't lose much time on warming up. I've pressed the button on the remote hatch control on our approach and the boarding ramp lowered to the ground right when we reached it.

"Welcome aboard the Marshmallow", I said on the go, nodding towards the cockpit door. "If we're in a hurry, jump into co-pilot seat, buckle up and get ready. I'll make it quick. Don't want to be a sitting duck."

Opening the cockpit, I quickly put the rifle into the holding clamps on the wall, reached the pilot seat and activated the main power switch. Engines woke up with a low roar...

He didn’t have time to admire the ship as they hurried aboard. Creamy had only seen FDLs when they were shooting at him. It seemed to him that this model was a ship killers’ preferred weapon of choice.

The noise of the engines encouraged a hum of appreciation from Creamy as he buckled up. The co-pilot station was to the left and slightly behind the pilot. Now the panels were active, Creamy inspected the ships specs in case he got a chance to fly it.

“It seems this ship is a reflection of its pilot” said Creamy to what he could see of Mrs Muirs’ cheek.

“An alluring body line, sweet name, but deadly to tangle with”

Turning off the tech panel, Creamy prepared for take-off wondering if Mrs Muir really had the location of his old ship. Creamy had spent an obscene amount of Credits on its interior because he imagined he would be spending a year or two with it making his fortune mining Void Opals and LTDs. It was a little embarrassing that his home from home had shut down the very first time he activated the mining lasers.
