Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Stanningly raises his hand. The Authority guards force Michael back into place, placing themselves between him and Veronica.

Smugness drips from his every word.

"You asked me to get to the bottom of this man's business here, and that's exactly what I intend to do. And since that appears to involve criminality and duplicity, then you as his owner are responsible, too."

He holds up the dataslate.

"His case was handled by Captain Tanaka himself. Come along, Miss Rayshellanne."

A guard took his place beside her. Stanningly smiled the smile of a man who thrived on petty authority.

"I insist."

"Ridiculous," says Veronica, standing her ground. "You appear to have a rather thin grasp of the law, Mister Stanningley. May I point out that Mikey's alleged criminal activities took place prior to his entering into service for me. And may I furthermore remind you that I am no longer Mikey's owner. I therefore have no responsibility whatsoever for his business here."

Veronica steps forward to face Stanningley, drawing herself up to her full height, a haughty expression on her face.

"And it's Lady Rayshellanne!"

Stanningley smiles.

"Due diligence is always an owner's responsibility," he says. "And just a moment ago you seemed quite invested in his business here."

The man snaps his fingers. The two guards produce mag-cuffs, stepping toward Michael and Veronica.
06 Jul 2021, 8:14am
"An owner's due diligence has no bearing here," says Veronica. "Were you not paying attention? I came here to establish whether or not Mikey was a slave when he was in Mu Koji at the time he was contracted over to me. Your own investigation confirmed that he was not, and so I repeat; I am not responsible for Mikey's actions here. You're being a fool, Stanningley. Place me under arrest and you'll be making a big mistake."
06 Jul 2021, 9:14am
"Your concern is touching. Your timing is criminal. Take them away, and contact the captain!"

The guards take MIchael and Veronica's hands, forcing them to their backs and snapping mag-cuffs around their wrists. Michael shoots a death glare Veronica's way.

"My bag..." says Veronica, ignoring Ridge's angry glower.

"I will take care of your bag," Stanningley replies. He unceremoniously scoops up Veronica's handbag from the deck and holds it aloft for her to see.

"Don't even think about opening it without first getting a search warrant," Veronica hisses.

Stanningley merely smiles, then tucks the bag under his arm. Veronica's burly guard seizes her by the left upper arm and propels her towards the door. Ridge is prodded to follow by his guard.

"There's no need to be quite so rough," says Veronica as she is led from the interview room.

"Wouldn't want you to fall over, Miss," the guard replies, quickening the pace.

"Not so fast," complains Veronica. "You've obviously never walked in twelve centimetre stiletto heels. Or then again, maybe you have."

The guard's already vice-like grip on Veronica's arm suddenly tightens as he wrenches her left shoulder upwards. The pace quickens even more, so that Veronica is forced into an awkward tottering trot.
06 Jul 2021, 4:17pm
Michael and Veronica are led down the main corridor on the administration level, the former casting roguish glances to his sides and the latter holding herself in a rigid, righteously indignant posture. The five pass through a security checkpoint and enter the Authority Complex.

Down one long sub-corridor is an office, unremarkable, with the holo-plate "Kenji Tanaka" visible upon the door. Stanningley straightens himself before pressing the guest button.
06 Jul 2021, 4:23pm
The doors slide open, revealing a clean, tasteful office with a minimum of decoration. A man is seated at a white, curved desk, itself nearly devoid of objects except a single holodisplay. The uniformed Authority officer– a captain, by his shoulder boards, looks up. He is of Asiatic descent of indeterminate age, with competent-looking features and intelligent, no-nonsense eyes. For a long moment he gazes upon the mag-cuffed pair before him, especially Michael.

Stanningley steps forward.

"Captain, I've–"

The man nods, interrupting. "Yes, I can see. These mag-cuffs won't be necessary. Thank you, inspector. That will be all."

Stanningley blinks. "But I've–"

"That will be all, inspector."

Swallowing, Stanningley bows as the mag-cuffs are released. Michael shakes them loose, rubbing his wrists, blinking in surprise but saying nothing. Stanningley and the pair of guards depart, the office door sliding shut behind them.

The captain rises from his chair, bowing slightly.

"More Inquisition business, is it?"
06 Jul 2021, 4:24pm
Michael blinks.

"What?"
07 Jul 2021, 10:18am
"Quite correct, Captain," says Veronica quickly. She gives Tanaka a formal bow in the appropriate Imperial manner, then collects her handbag from the desk where Stanningley left it.

"Allow me to introduce myself," she continues, taking a seat. "My name is Ruthine Pynner, and I have the honour to serve Her Majesty as an Inquisitor in the Kamadhenu Chapterhouse of Inquisition. Captain Ridge here is assisting me in an undercover investigation, the nature of which I'm afraid I am not at liberty to divulge. Please forgive the cloak and dagger, but I can assure you that our activities in Mu Koji have been sanctioned at the very highest level."

Veronica crosses her legs and smiles thinly at Tanaka.

"Unfortunately," she adds, "thanks to the zeal of Inspector Stanningley, our cover is now somewhat compromised. Those guards will gossip, I am sure. Especially the brute who dragged me here. A pity, really. We were making such good progress, too."
07 Jul 2021, 5:16pm
Tanaka gazes upon the woman.

"You are unknown to me. But he–"

He shifts his gaze to Michael.

"Is not."

The man settles in his chair, professional curiosity in his eyes.

"You're not still scavving battlefields for exclusive hardware, are you? If I recall, you were gifted a Prismatic array for your service. And those Pack-hound racks. And now here you are, engaged in an act of duplicity with a total stranger, trying to access perfectly mundane information."

He looks at Veronica, then back to Ridge.

"Curious. Most curious."

Descartes"You know what you can do with you're bounty!" I shouted, making myself more angry and trying to wrestle my arms out of my suit, becoming even more frustrated. Eventually it was flapping around my waist.

I turned away and started off the small bridge, waiting for the door to hiss open.

"And don't assume I'm staying.!"

In truth, the quarters he'd provided were surprisingly comfortable for a ship that wasn't originally designed with comfort in mind and it had more weapons than anything in my own little fleet, and performed well in a firefight. After all, I kept my finger on the fire-button too. I began to calm down and got the suit off. Washed as thoroughly as I could in zero-G and began to regain my self control, still angry at myself. Still with a tremor of excitement in my belly.

A familiar voice in my ear. -

'You're no saint. Have you forgotten the Cobra you sideswiped rather than give up a fraction of your cargo? You could have soaked up everything he could throw at you in that 'Conda. You knew he couldn't survive an impact like that.'

I realised that Sam was really no different from me, except he knew what had happened to his parents. Both of us doing whatever it took to make our way in the world, instinctively reacting to every challenge as it presented itself and regretting it later. I certainly did things in the past that I was now ashamed of. Now, comfortably wealthy and able to determine our own course of action as we chose.

I managed to secure myself cross-legged on the floor with the use of a grab-strap and eased my left ankle on top of my right thigh, the right one on the left. Palms together in front of my chest, I slowed my breathing and began to clear my mind, allowing thoughts to come and go like a cloud with every outbreath. I was oblivious to anything that might happen around me.

Sam landed the ship at the station

"Welcome Commander, enjoy your stay," said the Imperial Flight Control.

Flipping off engine switches and powering down different systems Sam took a long sigh.

"Well, that could've gone better. Maybe after she cools off she'll stay."

I think I'll have the gunship outfitted with a few first class cabins. Yeah and a fighter bay just in case He thought to himself.

He unbuckled himself and began gathering his things. Exiting the bridge and heading towards the back of the ship He looked at the cabin Descartes had shut herself in after their heated debate after the excitement of pirates. Sam raised his hand to knock, but hesitated.

Maybe she needs more time

He instead pushed the button to open the hatch and began walking down the stairs to the flight deck when four men rushed up the stairs.

"Can I help you gentlemen?" Sam pushed a button on his wrist bracelet computer sealing all doors of the ship so these sudden intruders could only access the entry of the ship which, unluckily for Sam, only contained his gear he planned to take with him to the station.

They moved into the ship with almost inhuman speed. They were looking for something. Searching almost frantically.

Shit... I've only got my knife on me. Who are these assholes? Feds? Imps?

After they figured out they couldn't access any other part of the ship the four men began to encircle Sam.

"Where is she?" Snarled one of the men as he came walking up to Sam face to face trying to put off an intimidating face and posture.

"Excuse you, where is who? It's just me here. No one else. And as you can see there's no cargo bays, just my personal quarters here and that stuff on the floor. I'm meeting a friend to give him some scan data and that's it. Don't know who you are looking for. Sorry, can't hel-"

Before he could finish the first man punched him in the stomach and he answered back with a blow to the man's face. The the other three recoiled and brandished weapons. Two of them raised pistols and the other a blade. The first man stepped back wiping blood from his lip and said, "She's here. And we'll kill ya and rip this puny ship apart to find her. You've no idea who you're dealing with mate."

"I think it's the same for you there bud. Sam Slid his knife from his boot and sent it into the gut of the first man. He ripped and tore it around the belly of the man and shoved him into one of the two with pistols who began firing. The two colliding into each other from Sam shoving the now dying man He rushed the second and cut a slash into his neck. Before Sam could wheel about to find the fourth man, the fourth man had found Sam already and ran his blade through Sam's lower back and the blade now stuck out of his stomach.

Warmth? Cold? What an odd feeling, being impaled.... it's kind of nice.

STOP, you're going into shock. End this fight, keep her safe so she can save your sorry ass and answer some questions!

Sam spun himself pulling the hilt of the blade out of the man's hand. As Sam came round he threw his knife at the fourth man landing his knife right in the man's chest. The fourth man slowly fell clutching the knife, gasping for air.

Must've hit a lung. That was lucky

-BANG-

The man Sam had shoved the first one into had stood up and shot him with his las pistol. A clean shot right through the left shoulder.

He must've been aiming for my heart... I've got to end this before...

Sam coughed some blood, shook his head and pushed the blade back through his torso and grabbed the blade. Taking a knee while spinning around.

-BANG-

Sam dodge another shot from the las pistol as he drove the blade backward towards the man's head making contact with the hilt stunning the man. With bloody hands from the sharp blade Sam flipped the blade and clumsily caught it by the hilt and pointed the edge at the man who was now pointing his las pistol at Sam's face.

"Give it up man. This chick we're after is not worth it." Said the man, who now had a sizeable lump forming on the side of his head.

Breathing heavily and choking on some blood Sam slowly stood and said," Like I said, I'm the only one here. You attacked me on my ship. You're in the wrong here 'bud' Take a look around. You're the only one left. Do you really think you have got what it takes? Could you kill me? Or did you shoot through my shoulder on purpose?"

The man then placed the pistol on Sam's forehead, and pulled the trigger....

Whizz....Click....

JAM

Sam then ran the blade through the other man's throat then ripped the blade out one side.

Slamming keys on his wrist computer, he sent out an SOS.

Docking Bay 47...

Attacked...

Need Medical...

Sam unsealed the ships inner doors and opened the passenger cabin where Descartes was meditating on the floor.

Sam collapsed in front of her, blood now running quicker than before with his adrenaline dumping out of his system. He looked up at Descartes handing her his wrist computer and said, "Here, this button opens the hatch. I sent a message to station services. We were attacked. 4 Men looking for you. They attacked first.

Had to defend...you...

...need...

to...."

Sam finally succumbed to his wounds and saw nothing but black as he lost consciousness.

Veronica's smile vanishes.

"An Inquisitor's assignment can indeed take a curious turn from time to time," she says, her tone level. "And, as an Inquisitor, I do not need to justify or explain my methods. I may be a stranger to you, Captain Tanaka, but that is of no consequence. The Inquisition is not in the habit of advertising its activities or its personnel, as I'm sure you appreciate."

She pauses for a moment as if considering.

"I will tell you this much, Captain; the 'mundane information' we sought from Inspector Stanningley was actually quite immaterial to my investigation. It was simply a means to an end, nothing more. As a matter of fact, it was Captain Ridge who suggested the idea for that line of questioning. I understand that it was you, Captain Tanaka, who handled Ridge's case two years ago. I believe the reports of the incident were very well received by my superiors. I commend you on your diligence."

Veronica's smile returns as she finishes speaking.
09 Jul 2021, 10:57am
Kenji's smile is all politeness.

"Then– in the spirit of diligence– you won't mind telling me the purpose behind acquiring such perfectly mundane information. Being immaterial to your investigation, I'm sure that even the Chapterhouse can divulge the reason for personally soliciting information that they can surely access from the comfort of an office in Kamadhenu."

His smile persists.
09 Jul 2021, 12:28pm
"Yes," replies Veronica, her gaze hardening, "I do mind, actually. Have a care, Captain Tanaka. You are beginning to try my patience. Your assistance today will be mentioned favourably in my report. It would be a pity to sully that mention with an unfavourable footnote."

Veronica holds eye contact with Tanaka for a moment longer, then resolutely rises to her feet.

"I believe that my business here is concluded. Captain Ridge and I shall take our leave. Thank you for your hospitality, Captain Tanaka.

Veronica gives Tanaka a curt yet still formal bow, then turns and walks briskly towards the door, nodding for Ridge to follow.
