Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

A notification popped up on Ward's data slate. Quickly scanning over the information, Ward lifted an eyebrow.

"Still waiting on more info, but preliminary stuff says he's not a member of the Pilots Federation," Ward said with some surprise. "So either he's going out of his way to hide his identity, or he's a nobody. And I'm inclined to think the latter."
07 Sep 2021, 6:06pm
"More than likely." Jubei nodded.

The warrior sat and thought for a moment before piping up. "See if he was flying with anyone recently- any records of recent contacts. Looks like he needed a ride at some point."
07 Sep 2021, 6:25pm
Ward skimmed through documented sightings of the Misadventure, giving a low grunt of amusement. "Last port of call for Ridge was Citi Gateway a few months back. His ship never came back... but says here that he checked back into a hotel a few days later. Meaning he caught a ride back. But I don't see any receipts from Apex Interstellar on file, so someone else must have brought him."

He brought up screenshots of Ridge in the corridor outside of his room, accompanied by a blonde female. "I'll see about the lady friend, could be a crewmate - or company."

Ward's slate suddenly went off with repeated notifications for different flagged subjects, ones he'd personally selected in case he was in danger of running into them on a task.

"No shit..."

He leaned in, pulling up a new screen and zooming in on a couple arguing in the same corridor some time earlier.

Ward sat back in his seat and ran a hand over his mouth.

"It's fuckin' Andor and Purpura," he said with an exasperated sigh.

Jubei's head perked up at the mention of old acquaintances. Yola and Tyrran were part of a group he frequented with, a couple of years ago. However, the events around Colonia over a year ago had changed his outlook on the couple. The stories told by Isaiah some months ago showed that the Night Witches may be in the pockets of Gideon. This was both a blessing and a curse.

"So Ridge and this blonde are the worker bees," Jubei mused aloud, "while Yola and Tyrran are the intermediaries. I still find it amusing that the Witches would fight the Club, but still be in league with another oppressor."

Jubei paced the room, brow furrowed and deep in thought. "We need to find out more information now. Are the Witches keeping a watch? If so, how? Can we isolate Ridge and the blond to talk without spooking them? Are the Witches still working for Gideon? Should we make contact with them?"

He stopped and brought his fists together in front of his chest. "Fuck it. We're not gonna get anywhere here. Let's head back to Citi Gateway."
08 Sep 2021, 6:18pm
Ward scratched his cheek, his beard making a soft sound like sandpaper as he stared at the images in front of him.

"They're obstacles to go around. I can only assume that if Gideon got wind of us preparing to move on Ridge and his companion, those two will be sent to deal with us."

Ward straightened his posture in his seat and sat forward, getting a better look at them, wondering what they were arguing about. Was it a lovers' quarrel or something more?

He stood up and stretched, flexing his arms and lifting them high above his head. "I think we're gonna have to take the direct approach, Himura. We don't have time to tiptoe around them because if those two beat us to the punch, we're gonna have to do things the hard way."

Ward crossed his arms across his chest, his mouth twisting into a grimace. "More than that, they can't know who I am. That would require me to take measures to protect my identity. So good, bad, friend or foe - if they learn my identity..."

Ward shook his head before cutting off the holofac. "I agree that we need to get over to Citi Gateway. I'll arrange to meet with Overton for more information, and maybe we can get a leg up on them."
08 Sep 2021, 7:23pm
"You gonna solo that, or you want some eyes?" Jubei asked honestly. The warrior was still very wary of this Overtron person and who she represented.
08 Sep 2021, 7:42pm
Ward shrugged. "I can ask for a dead drop and pick up a slate or something. Perks of employment I guess," he said. "We should check out that hotel and follow up with the usual spots."

His eyes wandered off to a point somewhere beyond Jubei's head, his gaze distant. "I'm going to see what I can dig up on Sobanii while we're there. I don't like that he's lurking."

Continued from The Galactic

Counting down the final few jumps of the evening, the last thing Lamb wanted was yet another bee-boop from the cockpit doors intercom. Lamb pulled her hand down her face and calmed her voice before answering.

“Is there an emergence that needs my attention?” she asked curtly?

“No Captain” came an unknown meek voice in replay. “The High Seeker has invited you to join us for evening celebrations. “Shall I tell him you will be attending?”

Pausing with the word ‘No’ tittering on the edge of being spoken, Lambs mind pictured what she may find if she did go to their little party. Usually, she would keep plenty of distance between nutters and herself, but curiosity was a powerful draw.

The ship leapt into hyperspace. Stars and Nebulas passed by creating a myriad of beautiful colors and patterns. Suddenly we slowed to supercruising speed and I began circumventing a Red Dwarf star to scoop fuel and aim at the next system on our journey.

10 jumps ain't bad. I wonder how our passenger is doing... She looked worse than me when I was in the hospital.

"I know this bounty will follow us, I'm sorry. But remember, I have some friends in high places. I've still got good contacts in the empire. And in my travels trading I made some good friends in the Federation. We're not alone here in the bubble that's true, but that also means we have friends. Have you heard from your friend? Rex, right? Or does he go by Raglan?"

I shifted uneasy in the pilot's chair. My chest was beginning to hurt worse.

"So, do you want to tell me what's bothering you? It sounds like your visit to the station wasn't as pleasant as mine. If it seemed like I was not wanting to meet up like you messaged me, that's not the case. I figured I'd be of better use to both of us being able to walk on my own. I was heading to the bar when you sent the message to meet at the docks. Hell, I packed our bags. And grabbed all my personal weapons so we have better protection against thugs than last time...."

Mentioning the battle seemed to hurt my lungs even more. I leaned forward as to not show how much pain I was in. A second later, a cooling sensation came over me and my body felt relaxed, pain was subsiding and I sat up straight and engaged the FSD.

Ah, good the implants are working.

We jumped to the next system. This time a Giant White star greeted us. Shielding my eyes from the blinding blueish white light for a brief moment I pitched down to begin orbiting the enormous star I looked over at Descartes, who was still looking straight ahead.

"Hey, when we get out into the black and we're finding new planets and new life... We'll laugh about this whole thing with Kohatu. Hell I'm sure if we're out there long enough, everyone will think we are dead. New start remember?"

Continued from: The Docks

In the gravity-freedom of space she tugs at the restraints that kept her locked on the bed. Over coms, she quibs to Sam and Des Cartes, "I'm secured. Ready for the jump." She begins to breathe slowly, trying to not tense up. No matter how many just she makes, the first is always a little rougher than the rest. So hard to not accidentally strain instead of just letting it happen.
27 Sep 2021, 3:04pm
"Yeah, new start Sam. Just tired, I feel worn out. Can't summon up much enthusiasm. Give me a day or two."

The fact was that like it or not, I had two people to be concerned about. Two people for whom I was responsible - up to a point. Up until now it had always been just me. I was hoping that Davenport really did just need a lift. Half-a-dozen jumps or so and we would find out.

"I'm worth more to Kohatu alive than dead. Because of my actions, you're worth more dead than alive. I'll feel easier when we leave Jameson behind."

I gave it one more jump. Checked the scanner. We were alone. So far.

"Take it easy for ten minutes, I'm going to check on our passenger."

I loosened the zip on my suit. I Should have bought a bigger one.

She looked fine. "You ok Davenport? We're going to cruise for a while. Get your breath."

Davenport looks over at Des Cartes in the doorway through the visor in her helmet. In zero G, Davenport moved freely, with the extra grace someone born and accustomed to high grav. couldn't really summon. At the update, she unfastens herself and sits up.

"We're still a couple jumps from Shinarata, right?" She asks. "Everything okay, or is there something not worth worrying about?"

She'd ferried a few passengers along. Felt she learnt the lingo. Realized the importance of not panicking the fare.

Something about not knowing and being powerless tickles the frail woman's anxiety as she notes Des Cartes less than copasetic demeanor.
27 Sep 2021, 5:08pm
Davenport seemed to be moving more easily now we had left the station gravity behind. I smiled.

"Several more easy jumps, yes. Still a medium security threat in the system, that's all. Nothin I can't deal with. Your safe in my hands."

I loosened my suit a little more and perched on the end of the bunk.

"Here's the thing. You were offering a lot of credits for a routine trip to Jameson. I was on my way already, so keep it in your account. But let me ask you again - Is there anything I need to know that might prove to be difficult when we get to Jameson? Is anyone going to come looking for you?"

"Like a bounty?" She asks, then shakes her head. "I'm nobody to everyone, but me mum un dad, really." That mental recollection of heart and home pulls out her Imperial working-class accent a moment.

"Just spent the last year, more than, out in the Elysian Fields, cataloging systems. Solo. I offered the cash because I needed a quick ride, and couldn't be picky." She explains. "See, the choice was to sit in Citi Gateway, undergoing Regen therapy on account of my extended zero-g time, or use my 'Condition,'" she air quotes it, "to my advantage and help get those refugees off the stations in Consar. Zero-g maneuvers and easy jumps in a big o' ship,, like the one I get access too."

She shrugs and looks away, "Seems a no-brainer and, well, I know it was throwing around a lot of credits, but you can't spend any out in the black, and places like Saud Kruger and IGAU, well, they pay big money for deep space data. More than a solo mining operation, and safer than running a trade route in a Type-10."
28 Sep 2021, 3:50pm
"A year with next to nothing gravity? No wonder your not as, um" choosing my words carefully, "as fit as you might be."

I was surprised that she had been declared fit to fly - if, indeed, she had. Weeks of gentle exercise and numerous sessions on a centrifuge had been prescribed for me the last time I spent too long weightless.

"I'm not familiar with that particular group of refugees, seems there will always be such unfortunate souls. Like the poor, 'they will always be with us.' I might look into doing something similar myself. It's about time I did something worthwhile."

I was being serious. I needed a purpose in my life. I could do it.

"OK' Well, you ready for the last few jumps? Is there anything you need help with? just let me know."
